Abstract:The intriguing properties of phosphorene motivate scientists to further explore the structures and properties of phosphorus materials. Here, we report a new allotrope named K4 phosphorus composed of three-coordinated phosphorus atoms in non-layered structure which is not only dynamically and mechanically stable, but also possesses thermal stability comparable to that of the orthorhombic black phosphorus (A17). Due to its unique configuration, K4 phosphorus exhibits exceptional properties: it possesses a band gap of 1.54 eV which is much larger than that of black phosphorus (0.30 eV), and it is stiffer than black phosphorus. The band gap of the newly predicted phase can be effectively tuned by appling hydrostastic pressure. In addition, K4 phosphorus exibits a good light absorption in visible and near ultraviolet region. These findings add additional features to the phosphorus family with new potential applications in nanoelectronics and nanomechanics.

Abstract:Exploring stable two-dimensional (2D) crystalline structures of phosphorus with tunable properties is of considerable importance partly due to the novel anisotropic behavior in phosphorene and potential applications in high-performance devices. Here, 21 new 2D phosphorus allotropes with porous structure are reported based on topological modeling method and first-principles calculations. We establish that stable 2D phosphorus crystals can be obtained by topologically assembling selected phosphorus monomer, dimer, trimer, tetramer, and hexamer. Nine of reported structures are predicted to be more stable than white phosphorus. Their dynamic and thermal stabilities are confirmed by the calculated vibration spectra and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamic simulation at temperatures up to 1500 K. These phosphorus porous polymorphs have isotropic mechanic properties that are significantly softer than phosphorene. The electronic band structures calculated with the HSE06 method indicate that new structures are semiconductors with band gaps ranging widely from 0.15 to 3.42 eV, which are tuned by the basic units assembled in the network. Of particular importance is that the position of both conduction and valence band edges of some allotropes matches well with the chemical reaction potential of H2/H(+) and O2/H2O, which can be used as element photocatalysts for visible-light-driven water splitting.
Three-Dimensional Covalently Linked Allotropic Structures of Phosphorus

Abstract:The discovery of new phosphorus allotropes has attracted continuous attention over recent decades, partly due to the importance of phosphorus in life and their fantastic structural diversity. Generally, phosphorus allotropes consist of covalently linked substructures, stacked together with van der Waals interactions, and a few phosphorus allotropes possess three-dimensional covalently linked structures only at high pressure. On the basis of first-principles calculations, five new phosphorus allotropes with three-dimensional covalently linked structures are predicted by assembling phosphorus units at ambient pressure, which are energetically more favorable than white phosphorus. Particularly, three of them share the same structures as those of previously reported three-dimensional nitrogen allotropes. These new allotropes are semiconductors with band gaps ranging from 0.52 to 2.39 eV, and the Young's modulus varies from 39 to 72 GPa. The structural stability of the new phosphorus allotropes are confirmed with a phonon spectrum and Born Oppenheimer molecular dynamic simulation at temperatures up to 700 K. Our findings enrich the phosphorus allotrope family with three-dimensional covalently linked pressure and versatile electronic properties.
A New Phosphorus Allotrope with Direct Band Gap and High Mobility

Abstract:Based on ab initio evolutionary crystal structure search computation, we report a new phase of phosphorus called green phosphorus ({\lambda}-P), which exhibits the direct band gaps ranging from 0.7 to 2.4 eV and the strong anisotropy in optical and transport properties. Free energy calculations show that a single-layer form, termed green phosphorene, is energetically more stable than blue phosphorene and a phase transition from black to green phosphorene can occur at temperatures above 87 K. Due to its buckled structure, green phosphorene can be synthesized on corrugated metal surfaces rather than clean surfaces.

Abstract:Elemental two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibiting intriguing properties have great potential applications in next-generation electronics. However, controlling single-phase synthesis might be challenging due to the existence of various allotropes with comparable stability. Here, low-dimensional phosphorus (P) is used as a prototype for the understanding of the competition among a series of 0D–2D allotropes upon adsorption. With a combination of theoretical calculations and scanning tunneling microscopy, we find that the formation of P allotropes significantly depends on the bond angle, coordination number, and atomic density. As a result, P atoms tend to form black phosphorene (BP)-like chains and pentamer molecules at low atomic density and 2D buckling blue phosphorene at high density. In particular, a trigonal nanoribbon-like phase is observed with the confinement of the BP-like chains. The comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the elemental allotropes in low dimension could provide fundamental guidance for the construction of polymorphic quantum materials with novel functionalities.

Novel High-Pressure Phases of Alp from First Principles

Abstract:By utilizing a crystal structure prediction software via particle swarm optimization, this study proposes three new high-pressure phases of aluminum phosphide (AlP) with high density and high hardness, in addition to previously proposed phases (wz-, zb-, rs-, NiAs-, β-Sn-, CsCl-, and Cmcm-AlP). These new phases are as follows: (1) an I4¯3d symmetric structure (cI24-AlP) at 55.2 GPa, (2) an R3¯m symmetric structure (hR18-AlP) at 9.9 GPa, and (3) a C222 symmetric structure (oC12-AlP) at 20.6 GPa. Based on first-principle calculations, these phases have higher energetic advantage than CsCl- and β-Sn-AlP at ambient pressure. The independent elastic constants and phonon dispersion spectra are calculated to check the mechanical and dynamic stabilities of these phases. According to mechanical property studies, these new AlP phases have higher hardness than NiAs-AlP, and oC12-AlP has the highest hardness of 7.9 GPa. Electronic band structure calculations indicate that NiAs- and hR18-AlP have electrical conductivity. Additionally, wz-, zb-, and oC12-AlP possess semiconductive properties with indirect bandgaps, and cI24-AlP has a semiconductive property with a direct bandgap.
Structure and Bonding in Amorphous Red Phosphorus

Abstract:Amorphous red phosphorus (a-P) is one of the remaining puzzling cases in the structural chemistry of the elements. Here, we elucidate the structure, stability, and chemical bonding in a-P from first principles, combining machine-learning and density-functional theory (DFT) methods. We show that a-P structures exist with a range of energies slightly higher than those of phosphorus nanorods, to which they are closely related, and that the stability of a-P is linked to the degree of structural relaxation and medium-range order. We thus complete the stability range of phosphorus allotropes [Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 11629] by now including the previously poorly understood amorphous phase, and we quantify the covalent and van der Waals interactions in all main phases of phosphorus. We also study the electronic densities of states, including those of hydrogenated a-P. Beyond the present study, our structural models are expected to enable wider-ranging first-principles investigations – for example, of a-P-based battery materials.

Abstract:.Summary of main observation and conclusion Studies on the aggregation degrees of negatively charged phosphides derived from the nucleophilic P-4 functionalization could help understand the pathway of phosphorus atoms degradation or aggregation. In this report, we have isolated and characterized four phosphorus cluster anions (P-7(3-), P-14(4-), P-16(2-), and P-26(4-)) from the nucleophilic functionalization of P-4 with 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes. These phosphorus clusters could be rationalized as the P-atom-containing products besides the main phospholyl lithium. Their structural features and P-31 NMR behaviors are discussed based on single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and P-31{H-1} COSY NMR analysis.
New Phosphorene Allotropes Containing Ridges with 2-and 4-Coordination

Abstract:In all of the phosphorus monolayers reported to date, phosphorus is 3-fold coordinated. However, flexible chemistry of phosphorus allows it to have varying coordination number up to 6. Here, we report three new phosphorus monolayers (labeled alpha-P-6, beta-P-6, and 558-P-6) having 2-, 3-, and 4-fold coordination, which can be observed in epitaxial growth where flakes merge forming ridges at the boundaries. On the basis of state-of-the-art theoretical simulations, we show that these three new monolayer allotropes are thermally and dynamically stable, and they have comparable energetic stability with some reported monolayers such as delta-P, gamma-P, and e-P. Because of their special atomic configurations, they exhibit exceptional properties, including extremely high electron mobility, anisotropic Young's moduli, and optical absorbance in visible and ultraviolet regions. These findings can extend the family of phosphorenes with novel properties and potential for applications.

Abstract:Converting elemental white phosphorus directly into organophosphorus or polyphosphorus is meaningful, challenging and attractive. The ate-complexes of aluminacyclopentadienes 1a,b react with P-4 to afford selectively the cyclotetraphosphanes 2a,b featuring four newly formed P-C bonds and a planar square cyclo-P 4 ring. Density functional theory calculations show that the conversion of tetrahedral P-4 to planar cyclo-P-4 moiety undergoes through an unexpected 1,1-P-insertion/Diels-Alder reaction/isomerization cascade process. The reaction of 2a with iodomethane or p-benzoquinone afforded the P-methylation product 3 and the metal-free cyclotetraphosphane 4, respectively. Interestingly, reduction of 4 generated the phospholyl anions 5 and 6 while treatment of 4 with iodomethane afforded the phospholyl cation 7.

Abstract:Based on the crystal structure prediction, we propose a new allotrope of phosphorene, psi-phosphorene (psi-P), with a porous structure, which is both thermally and dynamically stable in comparison with the previously reported allotropes. Due to its unique atom configuration, psi-P has highly orientation-dependent mechanical properties and excellent flexibility. Calculations using the HSE functional predict that psi-P is semiconducting with an indirect band gap of 1.57 eV and possesses anisotropic transport properties. Particularly, the electron mobility along the x-direction is up to 1.3 x 10(4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), which is comparable with that of black phosphorene. Considering its intrinsic porous structure, the performance of monolayer psi-P as a gas purification membrane was investigated. The calculation demonstrates that psi-P could be used for hydrogen purification from the mixture of CH4, CO2, N-2, CO, and H-2 with high selectivity. Furthermore, combining a suitable band gap with high carrier mobility, a MoSe2/psi-P van der Waals heterojunction is predicted to be a good solar cell material, whose power conversion efficiency is estimated up to 20.26%. Finally, we demonstrated that the Au(110) surface could be a suitable substrate for the synthesis of psi-P.

Abstract:Controlled insertion into a single P‐P bond of white phosphorus (P4) was achieved by employing a diaryl stabilized stannylene, Ar*2Sn (Ar* = 2,6‐bis(benzhydryl)‐4‐iPr‐phenyl). Conversions of the stannylene with P4 gave a non‐pyrophoric, air‐stable storage compound, which releases P4 quantitively upon irradiation with light (354 or 455 nm). Alternatively, the phosphorus cage is detached by reacting the storage compound with PhChChPh (Ch = Se, Te). Despite the recent advances in the directed conversion of P4 using main group element compounds, Ar*2Sn constitutes only the second structurally characterized example of a stannylene capable of performing controlled, reversible addition and release of white phosphorus.

Abstract:The lighter group-V element phosphorus forms the As-type (hR2) structure under pressure, above 5 GPa, and at 10 GPa transforms to the simple cubic structure (cP1), similar to arsenic. Despite of its low packing density, the simple cubic structure is stable in phosphorus over a very wide pressure range up to 103 GPa. On further pressure increase, the simple cubic structure transforms to a simple hexagonal structure (hP1) via a complex phase that was solved recently as incommensurately modulated. Structural transformations of phosphorus are connected with the changes of physical properties. Above 5 GPa phosphorus shows superconductivity with Tc reaching ~9.5K at 32GPa. The crystal structures and properties of high-pressure phases for phosphorus are discussed within the model of the Fermi sphere and Brillouin zone interactions.
Unusually Stable Helical Coil Allotrope of Phosphorus

Abstract:We have identified an unusually stable helical coil allotrope of phosphorus. Our ab initio density functional theory calculations indicate that the uncoiled, isolated straight one-dimensional chain is equally stable as a monolayer of black phosphorus dubbed phosphorene. The coiling tendency and the attraction between adjacent coil segments add an extra stabilization energy of ∼12 meV/atom to the coil allotrope, similar in value to the ∼16 meV/atom interlayer attraction in bulk black phosphorus. Thus, the helical coil structure is essentially as stable as black phosphorus, the most stable phosphorus allotrope known to date. With an optimum radius of 2.4 nm, the helical coil of phosphorus may fit well and even form inside wide carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Elemental phosphorus exhibits fascinating structural varieties and versatile properties. The unique nature of phosphorus bonds can lead to the formation of extremely complex structures, and detailed structural information on some phosphorus polymorphs is yet to be investigated. In this study, we investigated an unidentified crystalline phase of phosphorus, type-II red phosphorus (RP), by combining state-of-the-art structural characterization techniques. Electron diffraction tomography, atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), powder X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were concurrently used to elucidate the hidden structural motifs and their packing in type-II RP. Electron diffraction tomography, performed using individual crystalline nanowires, was used to identify a triclinic unit cell with volume of 5330 Å^3, the largest unit cell for elemental phosphorus crystals up to now, which contains approximately 250 phosphorus atoms. Atomic-resolution STEM imaging, which was performed along different crystal-zone axes, confirmed that the twisted wavy tubular motif is the basic building block of type-II RP. Our study discovered and presented a new variation of building blocks in phosphorus, and it provides insights to clarify the complexities observed in phosphorus as well as other relevant systems.

Phosphorous dimerization in GaP at high pressure

Abstract:Using combined experimental and computational approaches we show that at 43 GPa and 1300 K gallium phosphide adopts the super-Cmcm structure, here indicated with its Pearson notation oS24. First-principles enthalpy calculations demonstrate that this oS24 structure is more thermodynamically stable above about 20 GPa than other proposed polymorphs, such as cubic ZB and SC16 or the ubiquitous orthorhombic Cmcm phase (oS8). It is found that oS24-structured GaP exhibits short P-P bonds, according to our high-resolution structural analysis. Such phosphorous dimerization in GaP, observed for the first time and confirmed by ab initio calculations, sheds light on the nature of the super-Cmcm structure and provides critical new insights into the high-pressure polymorphism of octet semiconductors. Bond directionality and anisotropy, in addition to 5-fold phosphorous coordination, explain the relatively low symmetry of this high-pressure structure.

Abstract:Violet phosphorus, the most stable phosphorus allotrope, has been successfully produced recently. Phonon properties of layered structures are important characteristic features to provide their structural and chemical information. Raman spectroscopy is an easy, nondestructive, and effective characterization path to obtain phonon properties of elemental layered structures. However, no reliable data are available due to the lack of pure violet phosphorus crystals or rational lattice structures. The successful synthesis of violet phosphorus single crystals and further acquisition of its lattice structure give the possibility for the phonon properties of violet phosphorus. The phonon properties of violet phosphorus single crystals have been demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally in this work. The vibrational modes have been assigned. The evolution of Raman features between 103 and 833 K and 0–25 GPa has been studied. The first-order temperature coefficients for Tg, Ptub, and S[P9]–[P9] of violet phosphorus are much larger than those of the reported layered structures. The violet phosphorus has been demonstrated to transfer into A7 black phosphorus (rhombohedral) (>8.5 GPa) and then to a simple cubic one (>13.6 GPa). Assessing the Structural Diversity of Form II Red Phosphorus via Stepwise Crystal Structure Search

Abstract:Recently, the long less-known Form II red phosphorus (RP) (viz. Type II RP) was ascertained by the state-of-the-art 3-dimensional electron diffraction technique with a triclinic lattice, completely distinct from other known elemental phosphorus and leaving atomic coordinates not determined. The cell composed of ∼250 atoms might exceed the capacity of current readily available crystal structure search packages, which have been widely applied to systems with several tens of atoms. Besides, mistaking Form II RP for violet phosphorus is still surprisingly common in the studies on allotropic phosphorus due to misinterpretations on JCPDS card #00-044-0906. Herein, by reproducing annealing synthesis and cell relaxation of structures obtained in the literature, we verified two former crystal structures for Form II RP to be wrong and explained how the misinterpretations have occurred. Then, on the basis of experimental lattice data, we provided possible Form II RP models containing atomic positions by a nearly exhaustive high-throughput stepwise crystal structure search approach optimized by molecular mechanics, machine-learned force field, and density functional theory in succession. The energetic stability of Form II RP was found to rank between white phosphorus and black phosphorus, similar to the nanorod modifications.

Abstract:An experimental investigation of a new polymorphic 2D single layer of phosphorus on Ag(111) is presented. The atomically‐resolved scanning tunneling microscopy images show a new 2D material composed of freely‐floating phosphorus pentamers organized into a 2D layer, where the pentamers are aligned in close‐packed rows. The scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal a semiconducting character with a band gap of 1.20 eV. This work presents the formation at low temperature of a new polymorphic 2D phosphorus layer composed of a floating 2D pentamer structure. The smooth curved terrace edges and a lack of any clear crystallographic orientation with respect to the Ag(111) substrate at room temperature indicates a smooth potential energy surface that is reminiscent of a liquid‐like growth phase. This is confirmed by density functional theory calculations that find a small energy barrier of only 0.17 eV to surface diffusion of the pentamers (see Supporting Information). The formation of extended, homogeneous domains is a key ingredient to opening a new avenue to integrate this new 2D material into electronic devices.
