Abstract:Samples of La2-xBixCuO/sub 4/ were prepared by codecomposition of the nitrates in air. Single phase products were obtained for x < or = 0.10. The substitution of bismuth for lanthanum resulted in an increase in delocalization of holes, as indicated by increased conductivity and a decrease in the Neel temperature. Samples were also annealed in argon at 600 C and their properties compared with the samples as prepared in air.

Abstract:The perovskite oxide La(1-x)Sr(x)CoO(3)(0 <= x <= 0.5) series were prepared under different sintering conditions. Crystal structure was determined by powder X-ray diffraction and lattice parameters as a function of Sr-concentration x were obtained by using Rietveld method. The de resistivity investigated in the temperature range of 80 similar to 300 K indicates that the electric properties exhibit a metallic-insulator (semiconducting) (M-I) transition for 0.2 < x < 0.3. The samples with x = 0.2 is close to the M-I transition boundary. The influence of sintering conditions on the lattice parameters, resistivity and the ferromagnetic phase transition temperature T(C) of La(1-x)Sr(x)CoO(3) for the cases x = 0.2 and 0.5 was discussed. The change of the electric properties of semiconductor-like sample (x = 0.2) with sintering temperature and sintering period is just opposite to that of metallic sample (x = 0.5). Annealing in flowing oxygen can decrease the resistivity of semi-conductor-like sample.

Abstract:The electrical conductivity of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT)-based materials has been investigated intensively in the past decade; however, the conduction behaviour with incorporation of variable-valence elements has been limited. Here (NBT)(1-x)(BiCoO3)(x) (NBT-BC, 0 = x = 0.06) solid solutions were prepared by a solid-state reaction and their electrical properties were investigated by impedance spectroscopy. The results show that incorporation of BC changes the bulk conduction mechanism from predominant oxide-ion conduction for NBT to mixed ionic-electronic conduction for NBT-BC solid solutions. The n-type electronic component is induced by loss of oxygen at high temperatures which reduces Co3+ to Co2+, and the ionic conduction is suppressed due to trapping of oxygen vacancies by (or ). Bulk conductivity (s(b)) for single-phase compositions (0 = x = 0.04) shows a volcano-shape variation with increasing x due to a combined effect from the suppressed ionic contribution and the emergent electronic contribution. NBT-BC solid solutions represent a new Type II NBT with mixed conduction behavior but high s(b) and pave the way to understanding the electrical conduction mechanisms of NBT-based materials with the presence of variable-valence dopants, which may facilitate discovery of mixed conductors as electrode materials for solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:(1‐x)Sr0.75Ba0.25Nb2O6‐x[0.94Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3‐0.06BaTiO3] solid solution ceramics were prepared and investigated. The length‐diameter ratio of pillar‐like grain increased with increasing x, reaching maximum value of 10.5 with average length and diameter of 1.36 μm and 0.13 μm at x = 0.20. The maximum dielectric constant, temperature of maximum dielectric constant, saturated polarization decreased from 507, 36°C, 3.2 μC/cm2 at x = 0 to 365, ‐61°C, 2.0 μC/cm2 at x = 0.10, then increased to 1167, 43°C, 5.5 μC/cm2 at x = 0.20. The results were attributed to the competitive effects of B‐site Ti4+ and A‐site Ba2+ on ferroelectricity.

Abstract:Here, we report the crystal growth, physical and transport properties of Bi1-xSbx (x = 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15) topological insulator. Single crystals of Bi1-xSbx (x = 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15) were grown by melting bismuth and antimony together using the facile self flux method. The XRD measurements displayed highly indexed 00l lines and confirmed the crystalline nature as well as the rhombohedral structure of the Bi1-xSbx (x = 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15) crystals. Raman spectroscopy measurements for Bi1-xSbx system revealed four peaks within the spectral range of 10 to 250 cm-1 namely A1g and Eg modes corresponding to Bi-Bi and Sb-Sb vibrations. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Temperature dependent electrical resistivity curves with and without applied magnetic field exhibited a metallic behaviour and linear non-saturating magneto-resistance (MR) respectively for all the antimony (Sb) concentrations of x = 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15. The lowest Sb concentration sample with x = 0.05 (Bi0.95Sb0.05) exhibited the highest MR value of about 1400%, followed by x = 0.1 and 0.15 samples (Bi0.9Sb0.1 and Bi0.85Sb0.05) with MR values reaching up to 500% and 110% respectively at 2K and 6Tesla applied field. The magneto-conductivity (MC) is fitted to the HLN (Hikami Larkin Nagaoka) equation and it is found that the charge conduction mechanism is mainly dominated by WAL (weak anti-localization) along with a small contribution from WL (weak localization) effect. Summarily, the short letter discusses the synthesis, interesting transport and magneto-transport properties of Bi1-xSbx (x = 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15), which could be useful in understanding the fascinating properties of topological insulators and their technological applications.

Abstract:Ceramics with the nominal composition of SrBi4−xLaxTi4O15 have been prepared within the range of 0≤x≤1.8, and the dielectric properties are investigated. Single phase SrBi4−xLaxTi4O15 solid solution exists until the secondary phase of La2/3TiO3 appears at x=1.6. The Curie temperature is 520 °C for pure SrBi4Ti4O15, and it shifts to low temperature with increasing x, which is due to the smaller structural distortion caused by La3+ substitution. In addition, the dielectric constant anomaly is suppressed with the substitution. No dielectric relaxation behavior is observed. When x≥1.2, the paraelectric state is attained in the present ceramics. La3+ substitution effects on the SrBi4Ti4O15 ceramics are also compared with the previous work on Bi4−xLaxTi3O12.

Abstract:The phase transition of SbSI from non-centrosymmetry to centrosymmetry occurs at 292K, which is too low for its practical applications such as ferroelectricity and nonlinear optics. Here, the substitution of Sb by Bi atoms is proposed to improve its phase transition temperature. A new chalcohalide, Bi0.33Sb0.67SI, has been successfully synthesized by self-flux method. It crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric space group Pmc21 (No. 26) with a = 4.1190 (9) Å, b = 10.225 (2) Å, c = 8.5318 (18) Å. Different from the crystal structure of SbSI, Bi0.33Sb0.67SI is composed of two kinds of edge-sharing distorted square pyramid [MS3I2]5- (M = Bi or Sb), which form [ ∞ 1 M 2S4I2]4- chains along a axis. The compound exhibits a moderate powder second harmonic generation signal at 2.09 μm, which was consistent with its non-centrosymmetric structure.

Abstract:The crystal microstructure, superconductivity, and normal state transport properties of Bi1.9+xSr1.7−xLa0.4CuO6+δ(0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) system were investigated by means of electron diffraction (ED), resistivity, and TEP. Analyses of the experimental results indicate that with the increase of Bi content, the incommensurate modulation wavelength decreases and the distortion of CuO6 octahedron enhances. Increasing Bi content decreases the carrier concentration rapidly, and induces an MI transition. The destruction of superconductivity mainly derives from two aspects: the enhancement of structural distortion due to the introduction of more Bi and the variation of the carrier concentration of the system.

Abstract:(Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3)1−x(BiAlO3)x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.08) solid solutions were prepared by a solid state reaction and their electrical properties were established by ac impedance spectroscopy and electromotive force transport number measurements. Incorporation of BiAlO3 (BA) decreases the electrical conductivity of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) and sequentially changes the conduction mechanism with increasing x from predominant oxide-ion conduction to mixed ionic–electronic conduction and finally to predominant electronic conduction. The suppressed oxide-ion conduction by BA incorporation significantly reduces the dielectric loss at elevated temperatures and produces excellent high-temperature dielectric materials for high BA contents. The possible reasons for the suppressed oxide-ion conduction in the NBT–BA solid solutions have been discussed and we propose that the local structure, especially trapping of oxygen vacancies by Al3+ on the B-site, plays a key role in oxide-ion conduction in these apparently ‘stoichiometric’ NBT-based solid-solution perovskite materials.

Abstract:The electrical properties of (Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3)1−x(BiScO3)x (NBT-BS, 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) solid solutions are established by ac impedance spectroscopy and electromotive force transport number measurements. The bulk conductivity decreases with increasing BS incorporation but the oxide-ion transport number remains high (u003e0.85) over a wide compositional range 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.15 and drops to ∼0.7 for x ≥ 0.20. NBT-BS solid solutions can only present either predominant oxide-ion conduction or mixed ionic-electronic conduction behaviour, indicating that oxide-ion conduction cannot be fully eliminated by incorporation of BS. This is in contrast from our previous study where incorporation of ∼7% BiAlO3 (BA) can fully suppress the oxide-ion conduction in NBT. The conductivity–composition relationships of NBT-BS solid solutions are attributed to a competing effect from lattice expansion, which enlarges the channel for oxygen ion migration, with trapping between B-site acceptor ions, , and oxygen vacancies, , which decreases oxygen ion migration. Comparisons between NBT-BS, NBT-BA and NBT-BiGaO3 (BG) solid solutions suggest that small acceptor ions on the B-site are more effective in trapping oxygen vacancies and consequently more effective to suppress the oxide-ion conduction and thus reduce dielectric loss at elevated temperatures.
