Abstract:We have synthesized a novel europium bismuth sulfofluoride, Eu3Bi2S4F4, by solid-state reactions in sealed evacuated quartz ampoules. The compound crystallizes in a tetragonal lattice (space group I4/mmm, a = 4.0771(1) A, c = 32.4330(6) A, and Z = 2), in which CaF2-type Eu3F4 layers and NaCl-like BiS2 bilayers stack alternately along the crystallographic c axis. There are two crystallographically distinct Eu sites, Eu(1) and Eu(2) at the Wyckoff positions 4e and 2a, respectively. Our bond-valence-sum calculation, based on the refined structural data, indicates that Eu(1) is essentially divalent, whilst Eu(2) has an average valence of +2.64(5). This anomalous Eu valence state is further confirmed and supported, respectively, by Mossbauer and magnetization measurements. The Eu3+ components donate electrons into the conduction bands that are mainly composed of Bi- 6px and 6py states. Consequently, the material itself shows metallic conduction, and superconducts at 1.5 K without extrinsic chemical doping.

Combined Study of Structural, Magnetic and Transport Properties of Eu 0.5 Ln 0.5 BiS 2 F Superconductor

Abstract:Superconductivity below 0.3 K and a charge-density-wave-like（CDW-like） anomaly at 280 K were observed in EuBiS 2 F recently.Here we report a systematic study of structural and transport properties in Eu 0.5 Ln 0.5 BiS 2 F（Ln=La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm） by electrical resistivity,magnetization,and specific heat measurements.The lattice constants have a significant change upon rare earth substitution for Eu,suggesting an effective doping.As Ln is changed from Sm to La,the superconducting transition temperature T c increases from 1.55 K to 2.8 K.In contrast to the metallic parent compound,the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity displays semiconductinglike behavior for all the Eu 0.5 Ln 0.5 BiS 2 F samples.Meanwhile,the CDW-like anomaly observed in EuBiS2F is completely suppressed.Unlike the mixed valence state in the undoped compound,Eu ions in these rareearth-doped samples are mainly divalent.A specific anomaly at 1.3 K resembling that in EuBiS2F suggests the coexistence of superconductivity and spin glass state for Eu 0.5 La 0.5 BiS 2 F.Coexistence of ferromagnetic order and superconductivity is found below 2.2 K in Eu 0.5 Ce 0.5 BiS 2 F samples.Our results supplies a rich diagram showing that many interesting properties can be induced in BiS 2 -based compounds.

Abstract:The layered bismuth sulfofluorides EuBiS2F and Eu3Bi2S4F4 show unique properties among all the BiS2-based superconductors. Both compounds exhibit a possible charge-density-wave (CDW) instability around 280 K and undergo superconducting transitions at 0.3 and 1.5 K, respectively, without extrinsic doping. The self-doping effect due to the mixed valence state of Eu ions, which allows charge transfer from Eu to BiS2 layers, accounts for the metallic behavior and superconductivity. Here we present a brief review of the research progress in these Eu-containing bismuth sulfofluorides, including the structure and electronic properties, external pressure effects, chemical pressure effects and doping effects. The results can provide important information towards a deeper understanding of BiS2-based superconductors.
Role of Local Structure Distortion in the Suppression of Superconductivity for Eu3-xSrxBi2S4F4 System

Abstract:As new family of superconductors with a layered structure, BiS2-based materials have attracted much interest. Eu3Bi2S4F4 is a newly discovered member which shows superconductivity at 1.5 K without extrinsic doping, however, superconductivity is strongly suppressed by Sr-doping. In this contribution, we present, in terms of local atomic displacement, an insight into the relationship between Sr-doping and the suppression of superconductivity in Eu3-xSrxBi2S4F4 by Bi and Eu L-3-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Upon Sr-doping, the distance between Eu3F4 blocking layers and BiS2 layers is significantly elongated, accompanied by the breaking of Eu-S-Bi channel, which makes it more difficult to transfer electrons into BiS2 layers. Moreover, distortions in the Bi-S-1 plane increase with Sr content, reducing the overlap among Bi(6p(x)/6p(y))-S(3p) orbitals within the superconducting plane. The decoupling between blocking and BiS2 layers, as well as the distortions in the superconducting Bi-S-1 plane, may contribute to the suppression of superconductivity in Sr-doped Eu3Bi2S4F4 compounds. Abstract:EuBiS2F is a self-doped superconductor due to the mixed valence of Eu. Here we report that, with the Ce substitution for Eu by 50 at.%, the material exhibits ferromagnetic ordering at 8 K for the Ce-4 f moment, superconductivity at 2.2 K in the BiS2 layers and possibly antiferromagnetic ordering at 2.1 K for the Eu-4 f spins. The Eu valence is essentially divalent with the Ce incorporation. We tentatively interpret the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity by considering different Bi-6p orbitals that are responsible for the superconductivity itself and for mediating the ferromagnetic interaction, respectively. We argue that the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Eu-4 f spins is most likely due to a magnetic dipole-dipole interaction.

Abstract:Superconductivity within layered crystal structures has attracted sustained interest among condensed matter community, primarily due to their exotic superconducting properties. EuBiS 2 F is a newly discovered member in the BiS 2 -based superconducting family, which shows superconductivity at 0.3 K without extrinsic doping. With 50 at.% Ce substitution for Eu, superconductivity is enhanced with Tc increased up to 2.2 K. However, the mechanisms for the T c enhancement have not yet been elucidated. In this study, the Ce-doping effect on the self-electron-doped superconductor EuBiS 2 F was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We have established a relationship between Ce-doping and the T c enhancement in terms of Eu valence changes and nanoscale atomic displacements. The new finding sheds light on the interplay among superconductivity, charge and local structure in BiS 2 -based superconductors.

Abstract:Superconductivity (SC) and charge-density wave (CDW) are two contrasting yet relevant collective electronic states, which have received sustained interest for decades. Here, we report that, in a layered europium bismuth sulfofluoride, EuBiS2F, a CDW-like transition occurs at 280 K, below which SC emerges at 0.3 K, without any extrinsic doping. The Eu ions were found to exhibit an anomalously temperature-independent mixed valence of about +2.2, associated with the formation of a possible dynamic CDW. The mixed valence of Eu gives rise to self electron doping into the conduction bands mainly consisting of the in-plane Bi6p states, which in turn brings about the CDW and SC. In particular, the electronic specific-heat coefficient is enhanced by similar to 50 times, owing to the significant hybridizations between Eu4f and Bi6p electrons, as verified by band-structure calculations. Thus EuBiS2F manifests itself as an unprecedented material that simultaneously accommodates SC, CDW, and f -electron valence instability.

Abstract:We investigated the negative-chemical-pressure effect of Eu3Bi2S4-xSexF4 (0 <= x <= 2.0) by the partial substitution of S with Se. The crystalline lattice substantially expands as Se is doped, suggesting an effective negative chemical pressure. With Se/S doping, the charge-density-wave-like anomaly is suppressed, and meanwhile the superconducting transition temperature (T-c) is enhanced. For x = 2.0, T-c reaches 3.35K and bulk superconductivity is confirmed by the strong diamagnetic signal, with shielding volume fraction over 90%. Magnetic-susceptibility, specific-heat and Hall-effect measurements reveal that the Se/S doping increases the carrier density, corresponding to the increase of the average Eu valence. Abstract:The investigation of crystallographic, electronic, and magnetic characteristics, especially the mixed valences of Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ under pressure of a novel europium-based bismuth selenide compound, Eu$_4$Bi$_6$Se$_{13}$, presented. This new compound adopts a monoclinic crystal structure classified under the P$2_1$/m space group (#11). It exhibits distinctive structural features, including substantial Eu-Se coordination numbers, Bi-Se ladders, and linear chains of Eu atoms that propagate along the b-axis. Electronic resistivity assessments indicate that Eu$_{4}$Bi$_{6}$Se$_{13}$ exhibits weak metallic behaviors. Magnetic characterization reveals uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, with a notable spin transition at approximately 1.2 T when the magnetic field is oriented along the b-axis. This behavior, coupled with the specific Eu-Eu interatomic distances and the magnetic saturation observed at low fields, supports the identification of metamagnetic properties attributable to the flipping of europium spins. The Curie-Weiss analysis of the magnetic susceptibility measured both perpendicular and parallel to the b-axis and high-pressure partial fluorescence yield (PFY) results detected by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveal the tendency of the material to enter a mixed valent state where the trivalent state becomes more prominent with the pressure increase or temperature decrease.

Abstract:The pressure effect on the newly discovered charge-transferred BiS2-based superconductor, Eu3Bi2S4F4, with a T-c of 1.5 K at ambient pressure, is investigated by transport and magnetic measurements. Accompanied with the enhancement of metallicity under pressures, the onset superconducting transition temperature increases abruptly around 1.0 GPa, reaching similar to 10.0 K at 2.26 GPa. Alternating current magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that a new superconducting phase with a higher T-c emerges and dominates at high pressures. In the broad pressure window of 0.68 GPa <= p <= 2.00 GPa, the high-T-c phase coexists with the low-T-c phase. Hall effect measurements reveal a significant difference in electronic structures between the two superconducting phases. Our work devotes the effort to establish the commonality of pressure effect on the BiS2-based superconductors, and also uncovers the importance of electron carrier density in the high-T-c phase.
Magnetism and Transport Properties of EuCdBi<sub>2</sub> with Bi Square Net

Abstract:We report a possible coexistence of nontrivial topology and antiferromagnetism in the newly discovered compounds EuCdBi2, with magnetic Eu layer locating above and below Bi square net. The X-ray diffraction on single crystals and powder indicats that this 112-type material crystalizes in space group of I4/mmm, the same as SrMnBi2 and EuMnBi2. Our combined measurements of magnetization, electrical transport and specific heat consistently reveal antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition of Eu2+ moments at T-N = 20 K. The Eu moments are not saturated under a field of 7 T at 1.8 K. The anisotropic susceptibility suggests the Eu moments lie in the ab plane, and a metamagnetic (MM) transition is observed near 1 T below T-N. Large positive magnetoresistance (MR) present for both H parallel to ab and H parallel to c, which are considered to contain part contributions from Dirac bands. Hall measurements show the electron-hole compensation effect is prominent above 100 K, with a crossover of Hall resistance from negative to positive values at similar to 150 K. The fitted mobility of electrons is as high as 3250 cm(2) V-1 S-1 at 1.8 K. Interestingly, the rapid increase of carrier density and suppression of mobility appear at around T-N, indicating non-negligible interaction between Eu moments and electron/hole bands. EuCdBi2 may provide a new platform to investigate the interplay of topological bands and antiferromagnetic order.

Abstract:Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ is an orthorhombic non-symmorphic small band gap semiconductor with three distinct Eu$^{2+}$ sites and two low-temperature magnetic phase transitions. The material displays one of the greatest (negative) magnetoresistances of known stoichiometric antiferromagnets and belongs to a family of Zintl materials that may host an axion insulator. Using single crystal neutron diffraction, we show that the $T_{\mathrm{N1}}=14\mathrm{~K}$ second-order phase transition is associated with long-range antiferromagnetic order within the chemical unit cell $\left( k_1 = (000) \right)$. Upon cooling below $T_{\mathrm{N1}}$, the relative sublattice magnetizations of this structure vary until a second-order phase transition at $T_{\mathrm{N2}}=7\mathrm{~K}$ that doubles the unit cell along the $\hat{c}$ axis $\left( k_2 = \left(00\frac{1}{2}\right) \right)$. We show the anisotropic susceptibility and our magnetic neutron diffraction data are consistent with magnetic structures described by the $\Gamma_3$ irreducible representation with the staggered magnetization of the $k_1$ and $k_2$ components polarized along the $\hat{b}$ and $\hat{a}$ axis, respectively. As the $k_2$ component develops, the amplitude of the $k_1$ component is reduced, which indicates a 2k non-collinear magnetic structure. Density functional theory is used to calculate the energies of these magnetic structures and to show the $k_1$ phase is a metal so $T_{\mathrm{N1}}$ is a rare example of a unit-cell-preserving second-order phase transition from a paramagnetic semiconductor to an antiferromagnetic metal. DFT indicates the transition at $T_{\mathrm{N2}}$ to a doubled unit cell reduces the carrier density of the metal, which is consistent with resistivity data.

Peculiar Properties of the Ferromagnetic Superconductor Eu(Fe0.91Rh0.09)2As2

Abstract:Large single crystals of optimally doped Eu(Fe0.91Rh0.09)(2)As-2 were grown by the self-flux method. Resistivity and magnetization measurements show that the compound undergoes a superconducting transition at 19.6 K, followed by a ferromagnetic ordering of the Eu2+ moments at 16.8 K. The upper critical fields at zero temperature are estimated to be 12.5 T and 15.1 T for fields along the ab plane and the c-axis, respectively. Moreover, anisotropy reversal of the upper critical field is observed near the magnetic ordering temperature, which may be related to the anisotropic magnetization of Eu ions and the demagnetization effect. Both ferromagnetic and superconducting features are displayed by the magnetic susceptibility and peculiar isothermal magnetization loop. Our combined results unambiguously demonstrate the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the title compound.

Abstract:Ternary iron arsenide EuFe2As2 with ThCr2Si2-type structure has been studied by magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, thermopower, Hall, and specific-heat measurements. The compound undergoes two magnetic phase transitions at about 200 and 20 K, respectively. The former was found to be accompanied with a slight drop in magnetic susceptibility (after subtracting the Curie-Weiss paramagnetic contribution), a rapid decrease in resistivity, a large jump in thermopower, and a sharp peak in specific heat with decreasing temperature, all of which point to a spin-density-wave-like anti ferromagnetic transition. The latter was proposed to be associated with an A-type antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu2+ moments. Comparing with the physical properties of the isostructural compounds BaFe2As2 and SrFe2As2, we expect that superconductivity could be induced in EuFe2As2 through appropriate doping.
Structure and Properties of Antiferromagnetic Dirac Semi-Metal EuZnSb2

Abstract:A EuZnSb 2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) semi metal with a P4/nmm space group (No. 129) is synthesized using the Sb-flux method. The magnetic properties, specific heat, and resistivity of the EuZnSb 2 single crystals are analyzed. The magnetic and specific heat properties indicate an antiferromagnetic order of Eu 2+ with T N ~ 20 K. The magnetic field is observed to suppress the AFM transition of Eu 2+ and the magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature curves exhibit differences when the magnetic field is applied along the ab-plane and c-axis of EuZnSb 2 single crystal, reflecting a weak in-plane anisotropy of Eu 2+ . When the temperature is below 20 K, a spin‒flop transition of the AFM order appears at approximately 1.6 T. The electronic transport measurements indicate that a EuZnSb 2 single crystal exhibits metallic properties and an extremely unsaturated positive MR effect. A twofold period of anisotropic magnetoresistance is observed, indicating that the resistivity characteristics correlate with the magnetic field intensity and the angle between the magnetic field direction and the crystallographic axis direction. These studies contribute to enriching the magnetic, specific thermal, and electrical transport properties of EuZnSb 2 . These results also provide valuable information for further research on other AFM materials.

Superconductivity in Ba_(1-x)Sm_xFFeAs and Eu_(1-x)Sm_xFFeAs Systems

Abstract:We synthesized the samples Ba1-xSmxFFeAs and Eu1-xSmxFFeAs with ZrCuSiAs-type structure. These samples were characterized by resistivity and susceptibility. It is found that the substitution of rare earth metal for alkaline earth metal in the two systems suppresses the anomaly in resistivity and in-duces superconductivity. Superconductivity at 54 K in nominal composition Ba0.5Sm0.5FFeAs and at 51 K for Eu0.5Sm0.5FFeAs is realized, indicating that the superconducting transition temperatures in the iron arsenide fluorides is the same as that in oxypnictides with the same structure.
