Abstract:Resistive and magnetization properties have been measured in BiS$_2$-based samples CeO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ with a systematic substitution of O with F (0 $<$ x $<$ 0.6). In contrast to the band structure calculations, it is found that the parent phase of CeOBiS$_2$ is a bad metal, instead of an band insulator. By doping electrons into the system, it is surprising to find that superconductivity appears together with an insulating normal state. This evolution is clearly different from the cuprate and the iron pnictide systems, and is interpreted as approaching the von Hove singularity. Furthermore, ferromagnetism which may arise from the Ce moments, has been observed in the low temperature region in all samples, suggesting the co-existence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in the superconducting samples.

Abstract:EuBiS2F is a self-doped superconductor due to the mixed valence of Eu. Here we report that, with the Ce substitution for Eu by 50 at.%, the material exhibits ferromagnetic ordering at 8 K for the Ce-4 f moment, superconductivity at 2.2 K in the BiS2 layers and possibly antiferromagnetic ordering at 2.1 K for the Eu-4 f spins. The Eu valence is essentially divalent with the Ce incorporation. We tentatively interpret the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity by considering different Bi-6p orbitals that are responsible for the superconductivity itself and for mediating the ferromagnetic interaction, respectively. We argue that the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Eu-4 f spins is most likely due to a magnetic dipole-dipole interaction.

Abstract:Through the combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and the heat capacity measurements, we studied the effect of Ce doping in the newly discovered SrFBiS${2}$ system. It is found that Sr${0.5}$Ce${0.5}$FBiS${2}$ undergoes a second-order transition below $7.5 K, followed by a superconducting transition with the critical temperature Tc=2.8 K. Our transport, specific heat and DC-magnetization results suggest the presence of bulk ferromagneticcorrelation of Ce ion below 7.5 K that coexist with superconductivity when the temperature is further lowered below 2.8 K.

Abstract:We report the discovery of superconductivity in BiO1-xFxBiS2, an isostructural compound of the REO1-xFxBiS2 (RE: La, Nd, Pr, Ce, and Yb) superconductors. The parent compound, Bi2OS2, is nonsuperconductive. Superconductivity is observed in a wide range of F-doping content (0.06 <= x <= 0.27). The optimal F-doping concentration is about 0.24 in BiO1-xFxBiS2, where the highest transition temperature of 3.5 K is achieved. We suppose that the superconductivity in BiO1-xFxBiS2, as well as that in Bi3O2S3 and Bi4O4S3, is induced by partial substitution or insertion in the Bi2OS2 parent phase.

Abstract:Superconductivity in quasi-two-dimensional crystal Structures has attracted sustained interest among condensed matter community, primarily due to their exotic superconducting properties. Recently, superconductivity of BiS2-based compounds with the desired layered crystal structure has been reported. In this contribution, Ce-doping effect on-the electronic structure and local atomic displacement of Sr1-xCexFBiS2 was investigated by Ce and Bi L-3-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Upon Ce-doping both the Ce-S2 and Bi-S2 bonds shrink, enhancing the coupling between Sr/CeF and super-conducting BiS2 layers. Therefore, Ce substitution provides electron carriers to the superconducting BiS2 layers through the enhanced Ce-S2-Bi channel. On the other hand, Ce-doping effectively modulates the in-plane structure of Bi-S1 plane. In Ce-doped compounds both the shortening of in-plane Bi-S1 bond and the flatter Bi-S1 plane would enhance overlap of Bi(6p(x)/6p(y))-S(3p) orbitals within the superconducting plane. Therefore, Ce-doping not only provides the electron carriers to superconducting BiS2 layers, but also results in the flatter Bi-S1 plane. This may be related to the enhancement of superconductivity in Ce-doped SrFBiS2 compounds.

Abstract:We report on superconducting properties of high-quality single crystals of F-substituted NdOBiS 2 using low-temperature magnetization and transport measurements. Using the mixture of CsCl and KCl as the flux, we have synthesized our single crystals. This compound exhibits bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature of about T c ∼4.6 K. The critical current density J c as a function of temperature has been derived and decreases with the increasing temperature. We construct the phase diagram H c2 ( T ). The zero-temperature value for H_c2^B∥ c for value for T_c^90 % and T_c^0 % is estimated to be approximately 2.17 and 1.72 T respectively by using Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model.

Abstract:LaO(0.5)F(0.5)BiSe(2) is a new layered superconductor discovered recently, which shows the superconducting transition temperature of 3.5 K. With angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the electronic structure of LaO(0.5)F(0.5)BiSe(2) comprehensively. Two electron-like bands are located around the X point of the Brillouin zone, and the outer pockets connect with each other and form large Fermi surface around Γ and M. These bands show negligible k(z) dispersion, indicating their two-dimensional nature. Based on the Luttinger theorem, the carrier concentration is about 0.53 e(-) per unit cell, close to its nominal value. Moreover, the photoemission data and the band structure calculations agree very well, and the renormalization factor is nearly 1.0, indicating the electron correlations in this material are rather weak. Our results suggest that LaO(0.5)F(0.5)BiSe(2) is a conventional BCS superconductor without strong electron correlations.

Abstract:Superconductivity within layered crystal structures has attracted sustained interest among condensed matter community, primarily due to their exotic superconducting properties. EuBiS 2 F is a newly discovered member in the BiS 2 -based superconducting family, which shows superconductivity at 0.3 K without extrinsic doping. With 50 at.% Ce substitution for Eu, superconductivity is enhanced with Tc increased up to 2.2 K. However, the mechanisms for the T c enhancement have not yet been elucidated. In this study, the Ce-doping effect on the self-electron-doped superconductor EuBiS 2 F was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We have established a relationship between Ce-doping and the T c enhancement in terms of Eu valence changes and nanoscale atomic displacements. The new finding sheds light on the interplay among superconductivity, charge and local structure in BiS 2 -based superconductors.

Abstract:Transport and magnetization measurements of single crystas of BaPb1−x Bi x O3, for Bi compositions spanning the superconducting phase diagram, show signatures of granular and inhomogeneous superconductivity, possibly associated with the nanoscale structural phase separation found for compositions around optimal doping. The material exhibits a field-tuned superconductor-to-insulator transition for Bi compositions 0.24≤x≤0.28. For optimally doped samples (x≈0.25), the magnetoresistance curves show scaling, suggesting some kind of critical behavior.

Abstract:Resistivities of single-crystalline as well as poly-crystalline samples of CeOBiS2 without fluorine doping were measured at temperatures down to 0.13K, and were compared with those of poly-crystalline LaOBiS2 and PrOBiS2. Both poly-crystalline and single-crystalline CeOBiS2 exhibited zero resistivity below 1.2K while poly-crystalline LaOBiS2 and PrOBiS2 did not show zero resistivity down to 0.13K. Superconducting transition temperature of CeOBiS2 was reduced by increasing the applied current density. The superconductivity of CeOBiS2 without chemical doping is likely triggered by the carriers induced by the valence fluctuation between Ce3+ and Ce4+.

Abstract:We have systematically investigated the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of BiS2-based superconductor Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 (x = 0 - 1.0, y = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7) and Nd1-zSmzO1-yFyBiS2 (x = 0 - 0.8, y = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7). In the REOBiS2 system, both crystal structure and physical properties are tunable by mixing the RE (RE = rare earth) site with Ce, Nd and Sm due to the difference of ionic radius of RE. In the Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 system, bulk superconductivity is observed for x = 1.0 with y = 0.3 and x = 0.5 - 1.0 with y = 0.5. The transition temperature (Tc) increases with increasing Nd concentration. The highest Tc is 4.8 K for x = 1.0 with y = 0.5 in the Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 system. By the Nd substitution for Ce, lattice contraction along the a axis is generated while the c axis does not show a remarkable dependence on Nd concentration. The lattice constant of c decreases with increasing F concentration. Furthermore, we found that the Nd site can be replaced by smaller Sm ions up to z = 0.8 in Nd1-zSmzO1-yFyBiS2. Bulk superconductivity is observed within z = 0 - 0.8 for y = 0.3 and z = 0 - 0.6 for y = 0.5. The Tc increases with increasing Sm concentration. The highest Tc is 5.6 K for z = 0.8 with y = 0.3. With increasing Sm concentration, the lattice constant of a decreases while the lattice constants of c does not show a remarkable dependence on Sm concentration. We found that the chemical pressure generated by systematic solution of the RE site in the blocking layer commonly induces lattice contraction along the a axis in Ce1-xNdxO1-yFyBiS2 and Nd1-zSmzO1-yFyBiS2. The obtained results indicate that both optimal F concentration and uniaxial lattice contraction along the a axis generated by chemical pressure are essential for the inducement of bulk superconductivity in the REO1-yFyBiS2 system.

Abstract:The R(H) and Jc(T) of single phase material Bi3PbCa3Sr3Cu4Oy were investigated. As the temperature belows 65K, the sample likely shows the characteristics of homogeneous superconductors. Very high critical current density and no negative magnetoresistance are observed. This distinct property distinguishes the new material from other ceramic superconductors.

Abstract:The transport, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the cerium oxide bismuth compound Ce2O2Bi are systematically investigated in a wide temperature regime. The compound crystallizes in the antiThCr(2)Si(2)-type structure consisting of a separated Bi2- square net layer between the CeO layers. In the high temperature regime 200-300 K, the compound shows the conventional metallic behavior and localized 4f electrons of Ce3+ ions. In the low temperature regime 15-30 K, the resistivity increases with a logarithmic temperature dependence, accompanied with the negative magnetoresistance and a low carrier density. Further decreasing temperature, the resistivity drops rapidly below 6.2 K, signaling an antiferromagnetic ordering transition within the Kondo phase. Both susceptibility and specific heat display a similar transition around the same temperature, accompanied with a reduced magnetic entropy. A large Sommerfeld coefficient - similar to 336 mJ/mol K-2 is obtained by fitting the specific heat data and no superconductivity is observed down to 0.3 K. All these observations suggest that Ce2O2Bi is a rare low carrier density Kondo lattice compound whose interlayer hybridization between 4f electrons of Ce3+ ions and conduction 6p electrons of Bi2- ions plays a crucial role. Abstract:Superconducting properties of a new series Bi2−xSbxSr2Ca2Cu3Oy (x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) have been reported in this paper. All of these samples have two superconducting transitions. Abstract:Superconductivity below 0.3 K and a charge-density-wave-like（CDW-like） anomaly at 280 K were observed in EuBiS 2 F recently.Here we report a systematic study of structural and transport properties in Eu 0.5 Ln 0.5 BiS 2 F（Ln=La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm） by electrical resistivity,magnetization,and specific heat measurements.The lattice constants have a significant change upon rare earth substitution for Eu,suggesting an effective doping.As Ln is changed from Sm to La,the superconducting transition temperature T c increases from 1.55 K to 2.8 K.In contrast to the metallic parent compound,the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity displays semiconductinglike behavior for all the Eu 0.5 Ln 0.5 BiS 2 F samples.Meanwhile,the CDW-like anomaly observed in EuBiS2F is completely suppressed.Unlike the mixed valence state in the undoped compound,Eu ions in these rareearth-doped samples are mainly divalent.A specific anomaly at 1.3 K resembling that in EuBiS2F suggests the coexistence of superconductivity and spin glass state for Eu 0.5 La 0.5 BiS 2 F.Coexistence of ferromagnetic order and superconductivity is found below 2.2 K in Eu 0.5 Ce 0.5 BiS 2 F samples.Our results supplies a rich diagram showing that many interesting properties can be induced in BiS 2 -based compounds.
Localized and mixed valence state of Ce $4f$ in superconducting and ferromagnetic CeO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ revealed by x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy

Abstract:We have performed Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Ce $4d$-$4f$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES) on single crystals of CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$ for $x=0.0$ and 0.5 in order to investigate the Ce $4f$ electronic states. In the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS, mixed valence of Ce was found in the $x=0.0$ sample and the F-doping suppresses it, which is consistent with the results on polycrystalline samples. As for the resonant PES, we found that the Ce $4f$ electrons in both $x=0.0$ and $0.5$ systems respectively form a flat band at 1.0 eV and 1.4 eV below the Fermi level and there is no contribution to the Fermi surfaces. Interestingly, Ce valence in CeOBiS$_2$ deviates from Ce$^{3+}$ even though Ce $4f$ electrons are localized, indicating the Ce valence is not in a typical valence fluctuation regime. We assume that localized Ce $4f$ in CeOBiS$_2$ is mixed with the unoccupied Bi $6p_z$, which is consistent with the previous local structural study. Based on the analysis of the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectra using Anderson's impurity model calculation, we found that the transfer integral becomes smaller increasing the number of Ce $4f$ electrons upon the F substitution for O.

Abstract:We measure the magnetic penetration depth $\\Delta\\lambda(T)$ for NdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ ($x$ = 0.3 and 0.5) using the tunnel diode oscillator technique. The $\\Delta\\lambda(T)$ shows an upturn in the low-temperature limit which is attributed to the paramagnetism of Nd ions. After subtracting the paramagnetic contributions, the penetration depth $\\Delta\\lambda(T)$ follows exponential-type temperature dependence at $T\\ll T_c$. Both $\\Delta\\lambda(T)$ and the corresponding superfluid density $\\rho_s(T)$ can be described by the BCS model with an energy gap of $\\Delta(0)$ $\\approx$ 2.0 $k_BT_c$ for both $x$ = 0.3 and 0.5, suggesting strong-coupling BCS superconductivity in the presence of localized moments for NdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$.
Electron-Phonon Superconductivity in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiSe$_{2}$

Abstract:We report density functional calculations of the electronic structure, Fermi surface, phonon spectrum and electron--phonon coupling for newly discovered superconductor LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiSe$_{2}$. Significant similarity between LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ and LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiSe$_{2}$ is found, i.e. there is a strong Fermi surface nesting at ($\pi $,$\pi $,0), which results in unstable phonon branches. Combining the frozen phonon total energy calculations and an anharmonic oscillator model, we find that the quantum fluctuation prevents the appearance of static long--range order. The calculation shows that LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiSe$_{2}$ is highly anisotropic, and same as LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$, this compound is also a conventional electron-phonon coupling induced superconductor.
