Abstract:Three semiconducting ternary sulfides have been synthesized from the mixture of elements with about 20% excess of sulfur (to establish oxidant rich conditions) by solid-state reactions at high temperature. Ba12In4S19 ≡ (Ba2+)12(In3+)4(S2–)17(S2)2–, 1, crystallizes in the trigonal space group R3̅ with a = 9.6182(5) Å, b = 9.6182(5) Å, c = 75.393(7) Å, and Z = 6, with a unique long period-stacking structure of a combination of monometallic InS4 tetrahedra, linear dimeric In2S7 tetrahedra, disulfide S22– anions, and isolated sulfide S2– anions that is further enveloped by Ba2+ cations. Ba4In2S8 ≡ (Ba2+)4(In3+)2(S2–)6(S2)2–, 2, crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1̅ with a = 6.236(2) Å, b = 10.014(4) Å, c = 13.033(5) Å, α = 104.236(6)°, β = 90.412(4)°, γ = 91.052(6)°, and Z = 2. Ba4Ga2S8 ≡ (Ba2+)4(Ga3+)2(S2–)6(S2)2–, 3, crystallizes in the monoclinic P21/c with a = 12.739(5) Å, b = 6.201(2) Å, c = 19.830(8) Å, β = 104.254(6)° and Z = 4. Compounds 2 and 3 represent the first one-dimensional (1D) chain structure in ternary Ba/M/S (M = In, Ga) systems. The optical band gaps of 1 and 3 are measured to be around 2.55 eV, which agrees with their yellow color and the calculation results. The CASTEP calculations also reveal that the disulfide S22– anions in 1–3 contribute mainly to the bottom of the conduction bands and the top of valence bands, and thus determine the band gaps.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of a series of homologous tetranuclear complexes [((i)Pr3PCu)2(MR2)2(SCH2CH2S)2] (MR2 = GaMe2 (2), GaEt2 (3), Ga(i)Pr2 (4), Ga(n)Bu2 (5) and InMe2 (6), InEt2 (7), In(i)Pr2 (8), In(n)Bu2 (9)) and of related compounds [((i)Pr3PCu)3(MR2)(SCH2CH2S)2] (MR2 = GaMe2 (10), GaEt2 (11), Ga(i)Pr2 (12), Ga(n)Bu2 (13) and InMe2 (14), InEt2 (15), In(i)Pr2 (16), In(n)Bu2 (17)) are presented. The molecular structures of these were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Thermolysis processes of all the representatives of 2-9 were investigated by simultaneous thermal analysis and thermal decomposition in a nitrogen atmosphere in a quartz glass tube. According to powder X-ray diffraction studies these thermolysis residues predominantly consist of CuMS2 (M = Ga, In), which mainly occurred in the well known tetragonal chalcopyrite-type structure and partially in the hexagonal wurtzite-type structure. As expected from their composition, representatives of 10-17 form mixtures of CuMS2 and large amounts of Cu(2-x)S upon thermolysis.

Abstract:Metal chalcogenide supertetrahedral Tn clusters are of current interest for their unique compositions and structures, which rely highly on the structure-directing agents. Herein, we report four novel Tn cluster-based indium and gallium sulfides, namely, [NH(CH3)3]4In4S10H4 (1), (NH3)4Ga4S6 (2), [NH3CH2CH3]5(NH2CH2CH3)2Ga11S19 (3), and [NH3CH2CH2OH]6Ga10S18·2NH2CH2CH2OH (4). All four compounds were solvothermally synthesized in mixed amine–ethanol solutions or deep eutectic solvent (DES), where ammonia/amine molecules play significant structure-directing roles in the speciation and crystal growth. (1) Being protonated, the trimethylamine and ethanolamine molecules surround the T2-[In4S10H4]4– clusters (for 1) and [Ga10S18]n6n– open framework (for 4), respectively, compensating for the negative charge of the inorganic moieties. (2) With the lone pair of electrons, the ammonia molecules in 2 coordinate directly to corner Ga3+ ions of the {Ga4S6} cage to give a neutral T2-(NH3)4Ga4S6 cluster. (3) For compound 3, part of the ethylamine molecules act as terminating ligands for the T1 and T3 units in the [Ga11S19(NH2CH2CH3)2]n5n– layer, while the rest act as interlamellar countercations upon protonation. Abstract:A new ternary chromium disulfide, Ba9Cr4S19, has been grown out of BaCl2 molten salt. Single-crystal structure analysis revealed that it crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group C2/c with lattice parameters: a = 12.795(3) Å, b = 11.3269(2) Å, c = 23.2057(6) Å, β = 104.041(3)°, and Z = 4. Ba9Cr4S19 comprises four face-sharing Cr-centered octahedra with disulfide ions occupying sites on each terminal face. The resulting Cr4S15 tetramer units are isolated by nonmagnetic Ba-centered polyhedra in the ab plane and barium disulfide (=Ba4(S2)2) layers along the c-axis. Following the structure analysis, the title compound should be expressed as [Ba2+]9[Cr3+]4[(S2)2–]4[S2–]11, which is also consistent with Cr2p X-ray photoemission spectra showing trivalent states of the Cr atoms. The unique Cr-based zero-dimensional structure with the formation of these disulfide ions can be achieved for the first time in ternary chromium sulfides, which adopt 1–3 dimensional frameworks of Cr-centered polyhedra.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Two isostructural quaternary chalcogenidoantimonates(III) BaCuSbQ(3) (Q = S, Se): BaCuSbS3 (1) and BaCuSbSe3 (2) have been successfully synthesized through a facile hydrazine-hydrothermal method. Both two compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group and feature a three-dimensional (3D) channeled [Cu(2)Sb(2)Q(6)](4-) framework, which is constructed by the distorted tetrahedral CuQ(4) and pyramid SbQ(3) units via vertex sharing. Both optical properties and theoretical studies show 1 and 2 are semiconductors with narrow band gaps. In addition, their photoelectrochemical properties have been investigated. Abstract:We report the characterization of the compound [K([2.2.2]crypt)](4)[In8Sb13], which proves to contain a 1:1 mixture of [Sb@In8Sb12](3-) and [Sb@In8Sb12](5-). The tri-anion displays perfect T-h symmetry, the first completely inorganic molecule to do so, and contains eight equivalent In3+ centers in a cube. The gas-phase potential energy surface of the penta-anion has eight equivalent minima where the extra pair of electrons is localized on one In+ center, and these minima are linked by low-lying transition states where the electron pair is delocalized over two adjacent centers. The best fit to the electron density is obtained from a model where the structure of the 5- cluster lies close to the gas-phase transition state.

Abstract:This work reports the preparation of new quaternary sulfides Cs2Ln3CuS8 (Ln = La-Nd, Sm-Tb), their original crystal and electronic structures, and their magnetic properties. The sulfides were prepared using a reactive flux method from mixtures of Ln2S3 (EuS), Cs2S6, Cu2S, and S. They crystallize in a new type of structure (C2/m space group) and exhibit a layer-like crystal structure, which is a hybrid of those of the ACe2CuS6 series (A = Cs, K) and that of K2CeCu2S4. The values of the optical band gap calculated by the Kubelka-Munk equation are in the range of 1.2-2.62 eV depending on the nature of the Ln ion. The Cs2Gd3CuS8 compound displays relatively great magnetic refrigerating properties at cryogenic temperature with the mass entropy change (-ΔSM) reaching 19.5 J kg-1 K-1 at 3.5 K for ΔH = 5 T.

Abstract:Two new molecular metal chalcogenides, tris(ethylenediamine-N,N')manganese(II) tetratelluride, [Mn(C2H8N2)(3)]Te-4, (I), and bis[tris(ethylenediamine-N,N')iron(II)] pentaselenodiantimonate(III), [Fe(C2H8N2)(3)](2)(Sb2Se5), (II), containing the isolated molecular building blocks Te-4(2-) and Sb2Se54- , have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions in an ethylenediamine solution at 433 K. The anion Te-4(2-) in (I) is a zigzag oligometric chain with Te-Te bond lengths in the range 2.709-2.751 Angstrom. There is a very short contact [3.329 (1) Angstrom] between a pair of neighboring Te-4(2-) anions. In (II), each Sb atom is surrounded by three Se atoms to give a tripodal coordination. One of the three independent Se atoms is a mu(2)-bridging ligand between two Sb atoms; the other two are terminal.

Abstract:A new caged Cu-rich antimonide, BaCu(7.31(3))Sb(5), was obtained from a direct combination of the elements in a graphite crucible under a high vacuum by a solid state reaction, and the structure was determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method to be hexagonal P6(3)/mmc (No.194), with a = 7.0154(4) A, c = 12.5423(14) A, V = 534.58(7) A(3), and Z = 2. BaCu(7.31(3))Sb(5) is the first antimonide member of the BaNi(9)P(5)-type barium copper pnictides with a Cu2 site occupancy of 43.7(9)%, and the structure building unit is a 30-vertex Cu(18)Sb(12) cage centered by a Ba atom. The Cu(18)Sb(12) cages form chains along the c axis by sharing the opposite hexagonal (Cu2)(3)(Sb2)(3) faces. Such a cage chain shares (Cu1)(2)(Sb1)(2) rhomboidal faces with six neighboring chains along the [100], [010], and [110] directions to generate a 3D condensed metallic network. The electronic structure calculations by CASTEP indicate the metallic nature, which matches well with the metallic electrical conductivity, small Seebeck coefficient, and Pauli paramagnetism. The calculated formation energies indicate that BaCu(7.5)Sb(5)[triple bond]Ba(2)Cu(15)Sb(10) with the Cu2 site half occupied is the energetically favorable stoichiometry compared with Ba(2)Cu(12)Sb(10) (empty Cu2 site) and Ba(2)Cu(18)Sb(10) (fully occupied Cu2 site).

Abstract:Two novel two-dimensional (layered) intermetallic copper selenoantimonates Cu2SbSe3. 0.5en (I) and Cu2SbSe3. en (II), have been prepared by soft solvothermal reactions of CuCl, SbCl3, and Se with A(2)Se (A = Na, K) in the presence of ethylenediamine. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses show that both structures crystallize in the monoclinic crystal system. Compound I belongs to the P2(1)/n (no. 14) space group with a = 6.399(1) Angstrom, b = 18.858(4) Angstrom, c = 6.786(1) Angstrom, beta =113.23(3)degrees, Z = 4, V= 752.5(2) Angstrom(3), and II belongs to the Pn (no. 7) space group with a = 6.321(2) Angstrom, b = 11.841(2) Angstrom, c = 6.932(2) Angstrom, beta = 111.59(2)degrees, Z = 2, V = 482.4(2) Angstrom(3). Both compounds consist of Cu2SbSe3 layers separated by free ethylenediamine molecules. The intermetallic layers are very similar in I and II, but the orientations of the solvent molecules are different. Both compounds contain copper atoms of mixed-valence, Cu(I) and Cu(II), and both are semiconductors with intermediate band gaps (similar to 1.6 eV).

Abstract:Two new trinuclear tin(IV) oxy-sulfide complexes, (Bu4N)[Sn-3(mu(3)-OH)S-3(edt)(3)]center dot DMF (1) and (Bu4N)[Sn-3(mu(3)-OH)S-3(edt)(3)]center dot H2O (2), which are the same salt with different solvates, were unexpectedly obtained by the reaction of (Bu4N)(2)[Sn3S4(edt)(3)] with CuCl2 (Or KCuI2) and Zn(phen)(SCN)(2) (or Cd(phen)(SCN)(2)), respectively. The two complexes have been characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, IR, far-IR, Raman, H-1 NMR, ES-MS and element analysis. X-ray structure determinations reveal that complexes 1 and 2 possess the same incomplete cubane-like anion cluster of [Sn-3(mu(3)-OH)S-3(edt)(3)](-) (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In phase: The title compounds lie in a new region of phase space for such a structure, and have stoichiometries in accord with a classical Zintl phase formulation. The small semiconductor gaps indicated by DFT calculations are also supported by their diamagnetic susceptibilities.
