Abstract:To improve the proton conductive performance of heteropoly acids, sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were introduced into a tungstovanadophosphoric acid (H6PW9V3O40, abbreviated as PW9V3) to prepare a hybrid film material. The results indicate that the Keggin framework of the PW9V3O40 (6-) anion still remains in the hybrid material and confirm the homogeneous dispersion of PW9V3 on the surface of graphene sheets, which results in a better stability of PW9V3. The obtained PW9V3/rGO/SPEEK hybrid material exhibits appreciable proton conductivity of 6.2 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 17 degrees C and 70% relative humidity because the introduction of rGO and SPEEK into PW9V3 can help to form more hydrogen bonds in the HPA-based material. The conductivity of the PW9V3/rGO/SPEEK hybrid material enhances with the increase of temperature, and it shows Arrhenius behavior with the activation energy value of 18.7 kJ mol(-1), indicating that the proton conduction in this film occurs by a mixing mechanism. It is an alternative hybrid film material which may be applied in the field of proton exchange fuel cells.

Abstract:A SPEEK/PW11V/rGO hybrid film was prepared by a simple method through sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK), tungstovanadophosphoric acid (H4PW11VO40, abbreviated as PW11V) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in this work. The results indicate that the Keggin framework of PW11VO404− anion still remain in the hybrid film and confirm the homogeneous dispersion of PW11V on the surface of graphene sheet, which results in a better stability of PW11V. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that this film exhibits high proton conductivity of 2.22×10−2Scm−1 at 17°C and 6.43×10−2Scm−1 at 65°C (65% relative humidity). Its activation energy value for proton conduction is 18.9kJmol−1, suggesting that the conduction mechanism for this film is a mix of Vehicle mechanism and Grotthuss mechanism. It is an alternative film material which may be applied in the field of fuel cells.
Synthesis and Structure of a Proton-Conductive Supramolecular Complex Based on Poly-Keggin-anion Chains

Abstract:A proton-conductive organic/inorganic hybrid complex {[Cu(H2O)8][H(H2O)3](HINO)4(PW12O40)}n, was constructed by a self-assembly of H+(H2O)3 clusters, [Cu(H2O)8]2+ clusters, [PW12O40]3− anions and isonicotinic acid N-oxide (HINO). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at 293K revealed that the title complex presented exactly a three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen-bonded network with large one-dimensional (1D) channels. Interestingly, [PW12O40]3− anions just filled in the 1D channels and self-assembled into poly-Keggin-anion chains. Thermogravimetric analysis shows no weight loss in the temperature range of 20–100°C, indicating that all water molecules in the unit structure are not easily lost below 100°C. The title complex was characterized by a satisfactory ionic conductivity (1–2×10−3Scm−1) in the temperature range 85 to 100°C only. However, it is two orders of magnitude lower than that of Nafion membrane. A possible mechanism of the proton conduction was proposed according to the experimental results.
Hybrid Electrolyte SiW 9 MoV 2 /rgo/speek for Solid Supercapacitors with Enhanced Conductive Performance

Abstract:To improve the proton conductive performance of heteropoly acids, a novel proton-conducting hybrid electrolyte SiW9MoV2/rGO/SPEEK was prepared by a simple and effective method based on sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK), H6SiW9MoV2O40 (SiW9MoV2) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in this work. This hybrid material was characterized by IR, TEM and XRD. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows the obtained SiW9MoV2/rGO/SPEEK electrolyte exhibits an appreciable proton conductivity of 1.07 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 16 degrees C and 70% relative humidity, which increases with higher temperature, and the activation energy for proton conduction of this hybrid film is 17.82 kJ mol(-1). The proton conduction is speculated to be the mixing of Grotthuss mechanism and Vehicle mechanism that accelerate the proton mobility in the hybrid electrolyte. This work lays a foundation in the field of HPAs-based separator films for proton exchange membrane devices and solid supercapacitors.
Highly Proton-conducting Hybrid Materials Containing Keggintype Tungstovanadophosphoric Acids and Organic Polymers

Abstract:Four new proton-conducting hybrid materials were prepared by Keggin-type tungstovanadophosphoric heteropoly acids H4PW11VO40 center dot nH(2)O (PW11V) and H6PW9V3O40 center dot nH(2)O (PW9V3), organic polymers (polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP or polyethylene glycol, PEG) and silica gel (SiO2) at weight ratio of 80:10:10. Structural analysis reveals that the Keggin anions maintained in the hybrid materials, and these products exhibit high proton conductivity with 1.36 x10(-3) (PVP/PW11V3/SiO2), 3.44 x10(-3) (PEG/PW11V/SiO2), 8.90x10(-3) (PVP/PW9V3/SiO2) and 1.63X10(-2) S.cm(-1) (PEG/PW9V3/SiO2) at 26 degrees C and 75% relative humidity, increasing with higher temperature. Their activation energy of proton conduction is 17.96, 15.34, 17.54, 14.23 kJ.mol(-1), respectively, which is lower than the corresponding pure acid. The proton conduction mechanisms of these materials are also proposed.
Preparation and Electrochemical Performance of Tungstovanadophosphoric Heteropoly Acid and Its Hybrid Materials

Abstract:Tungstovanadophosphoric heteropoly acid H6PW9V3O40 center dot(13.81 +/- 0.13)H2O (abbreviated as PW9V3) has been synthesized by the stepwise acidification and the stepwise addition of element solutions. The crystal structure was determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the space group R (3) over barm, with a = 16.4374 (9) angstrom, b = 16.4374 (9) angstrom, c = 25.3866 (14) angstrom, alpha = 90, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 120, V = 5940.20 angstrom, and Z = 6. The product possesses Keggin structure, and its conductivity was 1.730 x 10(-2) S.cm(-1) at 26 degrees C and 75% relative humidity by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement. Two conducting systems were prepared with a mixture of as-synthesized PW9V3 and organic polymers [polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or polyethylene glycol (PEG)] at the weight ratio 80:20. The hybrid materials exhibit high proton conductivities with 7.110 x 10(-3) and 1.050 x 10(-2) S.cm(-1) (PW9V3/PEG) at 26 degrees C and 75% relative humidity, respectively. Their activation energies of proton conduction are 15.23 and 13.67 kJ.mol(-1), which are lower than that of pristine heteropoly acid (25.68 kJ.mol(-1)). Their mechanisms of proton conduction are also proposed.
The Preparation of Metal–Organic‐Framework/Boron Phosphate Hybrid Materials for Improved Performances in Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:New types of metal-organic framework based hybrid materials are designed and prepared, which involving the hybridization of various content of boron phosphate (BPO4) with the precursor of HKUST-1. The structure of obtained HKUST-1/BPO4 hybrid materials (HB) is fully investigated, and then applied to construct sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) based proton exchange membranes (SPEEK/HB). Owing to effective interactions between hybrid materials and SPEEK matrix, the achieved composite membranes reflect a considerable improvement in mechanical and thermal stability, oxidative stability, methanol permeation, and proton conductivity. In particular, the tensile strength of SPEEK/HB-20 composite membrane is 41.3 MPa, which is 1.5 times higher than pristine SPEEK, and the methanol permeability reduced to one-third of SPEEK at the same time. The SPEEK/HB-10 displays the highest proton conductivity of 37.4 mS cm(-1) at 80 degrees C, which is obviously higher than pristine SPEEK. These results reveal that the hybridization of HKUST-1 with BPO4 provide a promising candidate in the modification of proton exchange membranes (PEMs), and this strategy also possess great application potential in other types of MOFs-based hybrid materials.
High Performance Proton-Conducting Composite Based on Vanadium-Substituted Dawson-type Heteropoly Acid for Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are the key parts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this work, a proton-conducting composite membrane rGO-P2W16V2@SPEEK was synthesized from vanadium-substituted Dawson-type heteropoly acid (H8P2M16V2O62 center dot 20H(2)O, abbreviated as P2W16V2), sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Characterizations proved the integrity of the Dawson-structure heteropoly acids (HPAs) in composites and the uniform inorganic-organic hybrid distribution. The membrane shows excellent proton conductivity of 7.90 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 50 degrees C and the proton conduction was proved to comply with the Grotthuss mechanism. Up to now, this is the first time that a Dawson-type HPA was reported for the application of PEMs and this work extended the application of polyoxometalate-based materials in the field of fuel cells.
Polyoxometalate‐Modified Sponge‐Like Graphene Oxide Monolith with High Proton‐Conducting Performance

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) contains abundant oxygen‐containing functional groups acting as hydrogen bond acceptors for proton conduction on its basal plane. However, the dilemma in realizing bulk in‐plane conduction and the metastability at room temperature of GO films both obstruct its application. Polyoxometalate‐modified sponge‐like GO monolith (PEGO) with 3D cross‐linking inner structure, which exhibits unique “shrink‐expand” effect to polar solvent, are synthesized. Owing to the introduction of polyoxometalates and the replacement of unstable epoxy groups by ethylenediamine, PEGO exhibits hitherto the highest proton conductivity under low relative humidity (1.02 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 60% relative humidity) and excellent long‐term stability (more than 1 month). The outstanding conductivity originates from 3D transporting pathways, high‐density hopping sites, and eliminated grain boundary resistance. This study provides a practical way to design GO‐based proton‐conducting material dominated by in‐plane diffusion.
Preparation and Conductivity of Organic-Tungstovanadophosphoric Acid Hybrid Materials

Abstract:Highly conducting hybrid materials were prepared from 90 wt% tungstovanadophosphoric heteropoly acids with Dawson structure (H7P2W17VO62 or H9P2W15V3O62, abbreviated as P2W17V or P2W15V3) and 10 wt% organic polymers (polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP or polyethylene glycol, PEG). The result reveals that the conductivities of PVP/P2W17V, PEG/P2W17V, PVP/P2W15V3, and PEG/P2W15V3 are 4.70 x 10(-3), 1.02 x 10(-2), 7.03 x 10(-3), and 2.00 x 10(-2) S . cm(-1) at 26 degrees C and 75% relative humidity, respectively. Their activation energies of proton conduction are 10.72, 9.51, 14.87 and 13.79 kJ . mol(-1), which are lower than that of the pure heteropoly acids. A Maximization of the Proton Conductivity of Sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone) with Grafted Segments Containing Multiple, Flexible Propanesulfonic Acid Groups

Abstract:To enhance the proton conductivity of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), proton‐conducting groups are required to be covalently connected to SPEEK and form proton‐conducting channels. Herein, SPEEK fully grafted with segments containing multiple, flexible propanesulfonic acid groups (MS‐SPEEK‐102) is successfully prepared. Compared with SPEEK, MS‐SPEEK‐102 exhibits a higher proton conductivity of 8.3 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 80 °C with 98% relative humidity, and consequently a greater power density of 0.530 W cm−2 at 60 °C. These can be ascribed to the increased number of sulfonic acid groups, and ample, uninterrupted proton‐conducting channels constructed by the movement of the maximum content, flexible side‐chain segments. This approach offers an idea for obtaining a proton exchange membrane with good proton conductivity based on SPEEK. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Highly Proton Conductive and Mechanically Robust SPEEK Composite Membranes Incorporated with Hierarchical Metal–organic Framework/carbon Nanotubes Compound

Abstract:The preparation of composite proton exchange membranes (PEMs) by incorporating metal- organic frameworks (MOFs) into polymeric substrates has become a hot research topic in the field of fuel cells in recent years. In this work, ZSC was prepared by in-suit reacted with the precursor of ZIF-8 (Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework 8) and silica coated carbon nanotubes (SiO2@CNTs). The as-prepared ZSC was introduced into sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) to fabricate a series of composite proton exchange membranes SPEEK/ZSC-x (where x is the mass percentage between ZSC and SPEEK). The coating treatment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by silica not only can avoid the direct contacting among CNTs and enhance the dispersion in SPEEK matrix, but also realize the regulation of nucleation and crystallization process of ZIF-8 particles along the morphology of CNTs. The obtained SPEEK/ZSC composite membranes show improved performance owing to construction of interconnected network architecture and the compositional advantages of the ZSC materials. The proton conductivity of SPEEK/ZSC-0.5 membrane was up to 38.10 mS/cm at 80 °C, which was 1.8 times that of the pure SPEEK membrane (21.12 mS/cm) under the same condition. Moreover, the SPEEK/ZSC-0.5 showed better performance with peak power density of 38.9 mW/cm2 in 2 M methanol solution, which was 1.3 times that of the pure SPEEK membrane of 30.3 mW/cm2, the further stability tests confirmed that the composite film maintained good voltage stability even after 100 h of continuous operation at 80 °C. These results indicate that the strategy of construction MOFs and functional CNTs hybrid materials show promising application prospects in the preparation of high performance PEMs.

Abstract:A novel two-dimensional (2D) zeolitic imidazolate framework-graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposite () is designed as an inorganic filler in sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). ZIF-L with unique leaf-like morphology is grown in-situ on the GO sheet in aqueous media at room temperature. The terminal imidazole linker in and the –SO3H in SPEEK can form acid-base pairs in the membrane interface to produce low energy proton conduction highway. Benefiting from the unique structural advantage, the hybrid membranes displayed promoted physicochemical and electrochemical performances over the pure SPEEK. The achieved a proton conductivity of 0.265 and 0.0364 S cm−1 at 70 ℃-100% RH and 90 ℃-40% RH, 1.76- and 6.24-fold higher than pure SPEEK, respectively. Meanwhile, a single cell based on had an output power up to 652.82 mW cm−2 at 60 ℃, 1.45 times higher than the pure SPEEK. In addition, the durability test was performed by holding open circuit voltage (OCV) for 24 h. The provided better long-term stability than the pure SPEEK. These superior performance suggests a promising application in PEMFC.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of organic-inorganic hybrid high proton conductor materials (PEG/P2W18, PVP/P2W18, COS/P2W18) were prepared by octadecatungstodiphosphoric heteropoly acid with Dawson structure composited with polymer matrix (polyethylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, chitosan). The octadecatungstodiphosphoric heteropoly acid with Dawson structure was characterized by infrared spectrum, and the proton conductivity of octadecatungstodiphosphoric heteropoly acid with Dawson structure and its hybrid high proton conductor materials was measured by electrochemical impedance spectra. The results show that the proton conductivity of P2W18, PEG/P2W18,PVP/P2W18,COS/P2W18 was 4.73×10-3, 3.71×10-4,5.75×10-3 and 2.78×10-4 S·cm-1 at 18 ℃, respectively. They are new solid high proton conductors.

Abstract:A typical high-protonic conductor, a kind of vanadium-substituted heteropoly acid, H5PW10V2O40.15H2O, is synthesized with characterization and its proton conductive behavior also has been investigated. At 18 degrees C with 80% relative humidity, the protonic conductivity of H5PW10V2O40.15H2O is 1.27 x 10-2 S.cm- 1, an excellent protonic conductor. The proton conduction's activation energy is 25.41 kJ.mol- 1, implying it following Vehicle mechanism. Higher temperature can accelerate the conductivity of H5PW10V2O40.15H2O during the measured range.
An ultrahigh conductivity and efficiency of SPEEK-based hybrid proton exchange membrane containing amphoteric GO-VIPS nanofillers for vanadium flow battery

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)-based hybrid membranes (S/GO-VIPS) have been fabricated by the solution blending method, which amphoteric GO-VIPS nanofillers prepared by grafting 3-(1-vinyl-3-imidazole) propane sulfonate (VIPS) onto graphene oxide (GO) flake. With various GO-VIPS contents changing from 1 to 10 wt% in the S/GO-VIPS membranes, the interfacial interaction between SPEEK and GO-VIPS contributes to enhanced membrane structures and performance. Against pristine SPEEK (3.9 × 10 3 S min cm −3 ) and Nafion 117 (4.0 × 10 3 S min cm −3 ), S/GO-VIPS-5 gives the highest ion selectivity at 24.4 × 10 3 S min cm −3 , demonstrating the amphoteric GO-VIPS nanosheets afford a superior vanadium ion resistance and proton conductivity. At 100–200 mA cm −2 current density, S/GO-VIPS-5 presents excellent coulombic efficiency (97.4–99%), energy efficiency (78.9–66.3%), and self-discharge time (78 h), which is better than that of SPEEK and Nafion 117, respectively. Further cycling at 100 mA cm −2 for 350 times, its energy efficiency maintains at 80%, confirming its excellent structural stability and chemical stability. Combining with the physical barrier and the amphoteric acid-base functional groups of the GO-VIPS nanosheets, the increased proton conductivity and ion selectivity, and the decreased permeability of SPEEK-based membranes are well-regulated, demonstrating a promise in developing high-performance proton exchange membrane for vanadium flow battery applications.

Abstract:In this work, the polyethylene glycol (PEG) hybrid material composited with tungstovanadogermanic heteropoly acid was prepared. Infrared (IR) spectrum revealed that the Keggin structure characteristic of the GeW_11VO^5 - _40 anion was present in PEG hybrid material. At room temperature (20°C), the conductivity of the sample is 4.07×10 −3 S cm −1 . The results indicated that it is a new kind of excellent high-proton conductor. According to the experimental results, we proposed a possible mechanism of the proton conduction of the hybrid materials.

The proton conductivity of the PVP/H5SiW11VO40 hybrid material is 1.39x10(-2) S cm(-1) at 18 degrees C or 1.78x10(-2) S cm(-1) at 59 degrees C and 50% relative humidity, and its activation energy is 11.34+/-0.03 kJ mol(-1).
Polydopamine-coated polyimide nanofiber to anchor HPW and construct the pocket-like composite membrane with excellent proton conductivity and stability

Abstract:Solid heteropolyacids with high intrinsic proton conductivity, like phosphotungstic acid (HPW), were added to further enhance the proton conductivity of sulfonated poly ether ketone (SPEEK). The great solubility of solid acid within water, however, would produce a dramatic decline in stability and durability. In this study, we utilized polydopamine (PDA) coated polyimide (PI) nanofiber to form the acid-base pair between nanofiber and HPW/SPEEK to anchor the HPW. Additionally, a pocket was constructed in the sandwich-structure /SPEEK + HPW membrane to help better anchor the HPW. After 6 weeks of durability treatment during 60 °C and 100% RH, proton conductivity of /SPEEK + HPW-20 was 163.5 mS cm −1 , which was only 23.0% lower than that of the initial state. By sharp contrast, it was 55.2% lower than the initial state for pristine SPEEK. And its swelling ratio is only 54% compared with 128% of pristine SPEEK under the same condition. We first revealed and investigated the acid-base pair created by and HPW/SPEEK, which was beneficial for proton conductivity and durability. This pocket-like /SPEEK + HPW membrane would inspire a wide application in PEM among excellent proton conductivity, better stability, with endurance.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this article, novel proton‐conducting composite membranes SPEEK/PW11V and PVA/SiW11V were synthesized from vanadium substituted heteropoly acids (H4PW11VO40·8H2O and H5SiW11VO40·15H2O, abbreviated as PW11V and SiW11V) and polymers (SPEEK or PVA) at the weight ratio 70 : 30. The membranes were characterized by the infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray powder diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy, which confirmed the maintenance of the Keggin framework and dispersion homogeneously in the polymer matrix without long‐range ordering. Their proton‐conducting properties were investigated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the respective proton conductivities of SPEEK/PW11V and PVA/SiW11V membranes were in the order of 10−2 and 10−4 S cm−1 at ambient temperature. The temperature dependence of the two composite membrane electrolytes exhibit Arrhenius behavior, and the observed activation energies to be 15.82 kJ mol−1 for SPEEK/PW11V and 14.40 kJ mol−1 for PVA/SiW11V, which indicates that the proton conduction complies with the Grotthuss mechanism. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
