Abstract:A silver-catalyzed Minisci-type acylation reaction is reported here. Acylation of electron-deficient N-heterocycles is achieved in aqueous solution through dehydrogenation cross-coupling of aldehydes and N-heteroarenes in open air without external Brønsted acid. Selectfluor® is used as a mild oxidant. This method has been successfully employed in acylation of a variety of N-heteroarenes with aldehydes. This strategy provides an efficient and mild method for acylation of N-heteroarenes.

Abstract:A silver-catalyzed Minisci-type reaction is reported here. Alkylation of electron-deficient N-heterocycles is achieved in aqueous solution through decarboxylative cross-coupling of aliphatic acids and N-heteroarenes in open air without external Bronsted acid. Selectfluor is used as a mild oxidant. Different substituents on heterocycles and acids are tolerated. Primary and secondary alkyl could be introduced efficiently into the heteroarenes.
Mechanistic Insights into the Ag(I)-Catalyzed Aryl Migration

Abstract:Theoretical investigation has been conducted into the mechanism for the Ag(I)/PhI(OTFA)(2)-catalyzed 1,4-radical aryl migration from carbon center to nitrogen center in sulfonamides by using density functional theory (DFT). The calculations show that 11 elementary reactions compose the whole catalytic reaction, which includes the deprotonation, the oxidation of Ag(I) intermediate to Ag(II) intermediate, the formation of nitrogen radical, the 1,4-radical aryl migration, the oxidation of benzyl radical to benzyl cation, etc. The difference between sulfonamides and other amides in the deprotonation process accounts for the experimental phenomenon that only the sulfonamides perform the deprotonation and subsequent 1,4-radical aryl migrations. Moreover, migrations of this kind proceed via a five-membered spirocyclic radical intermediate and favor the electron-rich phenyl group.

Abstract:Silver-mediated isocyanide-alkyne [3 + 2] cycloaddition has been developed as a new method for the synthesis of pyrroles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations toward this reaction reveal that terminal alkynes participated cycloadditions proceed through two successive 1,5-silver migrations, in which the silver migrates between two carbon atoms and finally returns to original carbon. Natural population analysis (NPA) indicates that silver migration guides the move of charge into a rational way, thereby facilitating the cycloaddition. An analogous silver-migration mechanism is also suitable to explain the reactivity of the cycloaddition between isocyanide and internal alkynes, which shows the generality of the silver-migration process. Moreover, competitive experiments are consistent with the computational results, which provides further support for the mechanism.

Abstract:An iodine-promoted, metal-, base-, and solvent-free cross-coupling reaction was developed for the synthesis of various useful secondary amides via an aryl N-addition reaction of aryl groups to cyano groups. This aryl transfer reaction proceeds with arylhydrazine hydrochlorides serving as the aryl donors. A labelling experiment shows that the N atom in the product comes from the cyano group of the nitriles, which are low in cost. A plausible radical-driven mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:A systematic investigation has been conducted into the mechanism for the silver-catalyzed direct amination of unactivated CH bonds in triflamides by density functional theory (DFT). The present work is in favor of the non-radical mechanism, which consists of four parts: formation of NAg(I) intermediate, oxidation of the NAg(I) to NAg(III) intermediate by PhI(OTFA)2, concerted metallation/deprotonation (CMD) process and reductive elimination. Thereinto, it is the CMD process that determines the reaction rate as well as the selectivity of the reaction.

Abstract:A metal-free cascade arylation/aryl migration/desulfonylation of N-phenyl-N-(phenylsulfonyl)methacrylamide is described. The in situ generated diazonium salts from anilines and t-BuONO are used as aryl precursors. This process provides an efficient strategy for the synthesis of α-all-carbon quaternary stereocenters amides. A radical mechanism was proposed for this transformation.
