Abstract:A novel approach to aryl or alkenyl nitriles from benzyl and allyl halides has been developed. A tandem TBAB-catalyzed substitution and the subsequent novel oxidative rearrangement are involved in this transformation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first transformation from allyl halides to alkenyl nitriles. The broad reaction scope and the mild conditions may make these methods of use in organic synthesis.

Abstract:An iodine-promoted, metal-, base-, and solvent-free cross-coupling reaction was developed for the synthesis of various useful secondary amides via an aryl N-addition reaction of aryl groups to cyano groups. This aryl transfer reaction proceeds with arylhydrazine hydrochlorides serving as the aryl donors. A labelling experiment shows that the N atom in the product comes from the cyano group of the nitriles, which are low in cost. A plausible radical-driven mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:Tandem aromatic rearrangements represent a potent strategy for modulating the regioselectivity of a rearrangement process. In this article, we disclose two novel tandem aromatic rearrangements triggered by sulfonium [5,5]-rearrangement recently developed in our laboratory. Specifically, the [5,5]-rearrangement of aryl sulfoxides with allyl nitriles, followed by [3,3]-Cope rearrangement, forges a seamless tandem [5,5]-/[3,3]-rearrangement cascade, affording ortho -functionalized aryl sulfides. The other tandem process involves [5,5]-rearrangement of aryl sulfoxides with allyl nitriles, followed by nucleophilic addition/DDQ-oxidation-induced [3,3]-Cope rearrangement, eventually yielding meta -functionalized aryl sulfides. Both consecutive rearrangements enrich the repertoire of tandem aromatic rearrangement methodologies. Abstract:An efficient Cu0-promoted Truce-Smiles rearrangement for the aryl-difluoromethylenation of C═C bonds by the reaction of N-alkyl-N-(arylsulfonyl)methacrylamide and 2-bromodifluoromethyl-1,3-benzodiazole via a reductive radical-polar crossover process under mild reaction conditions is presented. The protocol enables practical access to a variety of single regioisomer α-aryl-β-difluoromethylene amides in good to excellent yields through consecutive difluoromethylenation, radical-polar crossover, 1,4-aryl migration, SO2 extrusion, and N-H bond formation cascade reaction.

Abstract:Tandem Meinwald rearrangement and nucleophilic substitution of oxiranenitriles was realized. Arylacetic acid derivatives were readily synthesized from 3-aryloxirane-2-carbonitriles with amines, alcohols, or water in the presence of boron trifluoride under microwave irradiation, and the designed synthetic strategy includes introducing a cyano leaving group into arylepoxides and capturing the in situ generated toxic cyanide with boron trifluoride, making the reaction efficient, safe, and environmentally benign. The reaction occurs through an acid-promoted Meinwald rearrangement, producing arylacetyl cyanides, followed by an addition-elimination process with nitrogen or oxygen-containing nucleophilic amines, alcohols or water. The current method provides a new application of the tandem Meinwald rearrangement.
