Abstract:A transition-metal-free Cs2 CO3 -catalyzed α-hydroxylation of carbonyl compounds with O2 as the oxygen source is described. This reaction provides an efficient approach to tertiary α-hydroxycarbonyl compounds, which are highly valued chemicals and widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The simple conditions and the use of molecular oxygen as both the oxidant and the oxygen source make this protocol very environmentally friendly and practical. This transformation is highly efficient and highly selective for tertiary C(sp(3) )H bond cleavage.

Abstract:An efficient method for the direct preparation of high synthetic valuable α-hydroxycarbonyls is described. The simple and readily available I2 or NBS was used as catalyst. DMSO acts as the oxidant, oxygen source, and solvent. A diverse range of tertiary Csp(3)-H bonds as well as more challenging secondary Csp(3)-H bonds could be hydroxylated in this transformation. The reaction is mild, less toxic and easy to perform.

Abstract:A selective electrochemical oxidation was developed under mild condition. Various mono-carbonyl and multi-carbonyl compounds can be prepared from different aromatic hydrocarbons with moderate to excellent yield and selectivity by virtue of this electrochemical oxidation. The produced carbonyl compounds can be further transformed into α-ketoamides, homoallylic alcohols and oximes in a one-pot reaction. In particular, a series of α-ketoamides were prepared in a one-pot continuous electrolysis. Mechanistic studies showed that 2,2,2-trifluoroethan-1-ol(TFE) can interact with catalyst species and generate the corresponding hydrogen-bonding complex to enhance the electrochemical oxidation performance.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide is an abundant and costefficient Cl building block for the carbonylation industry. Transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative C-H/C(X)-H carbonylation with CO provides one of the most straightforward approaches to construct carbonyl compounds. However, the use of stoichiometric oxidants would bring several drawbacks such as high cost and undesired chemical waste. Especially, the explosion limit is a potential safety hazard in oxidative carbonylation using O-2 as the oxidant. To overcome these issues, an electrochemical strategy for oxidative C-H/N-H carbonylation has been designed by taking advantage of anodic oxidation to recycle a cobalt catalyst, and H-2 is generated at the cathode. The intra- and intermolecular carbonylation products can be achieved with good functional group tolerance in 31%-99% yields. A plausible reaction mechanism involving a Co-II/Com(III)/Co-I catalytic cycle is proposed by the studies of XANES and CV.

Abstract:p -Quinols are ubiquitous structural motifs of various natural products and pharmaceutical compounds, and versatile building blocks in synthetic chemistry. The reported methods for the synthesis of p -quinol require stoichiometric amounts of oxidants. Molecular oxygen is considered as an ideal oxidant due to its natural, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly characteristics. During the ongoing research of C-H bond hydroxylation, we found that multi-alkyl phenols could react with molecular oxygen under mild conditions. Herein, we describe an efficient oxidative de-aromatization of multi-alkyl phenols to p -quinols. 1 atm of molecular oxygen was used as the oxidant. Many multi-alkyl phenols could react smoothly at room temperature. Isotopic labeling experiment was also performed, and the result proved that the oxygen atom in the produced hydroxyl group is from molecular oxygen.
