Abstract:N-Heterocyclic Olefin (NHO) with high electronegativity at the terminal carbon atom was found to show a strong tendency for CO2 sequestration, affording a CO2 adduct (NHO-CO2). X-ray single crystal analysis revealed the bent geometry of the binding CO2 in the NHO-CO2 adducts with an O-C-O angle of 127.7-129.9 degrees, dependent on the substitute groups of N-heterocyclic ring. The length of the C-carboxylate-C-NHO bond is in the range of 1.55-1.57 angstrom, significantly longer than that of the C-carboxylate-C-NHC bond (1.52-1.53 angstrom) of the previously reported NHC-CO2 adducts. The FTIR study by monitoring the v(CO2) region of transmittance change demonstrated that the decarboxylation of NHO-CO2 adducts is easier than that of the corresponding NHC-CO2 adducts. Notably, the NHO-CO2 adducts were found to be highly active in catalyzing the carboxylative cyclization of CO2 and propargylic alcohols at mild conditions (even at ambient temperature and 0.1 MPa CO2 pressure), selectively giving alpha-alkylidene cyclic carbonates in good yields. The catalytic activity is about 10-200 times that of the corresponding NHC-CO2 adducts at the same conditions. Two reaction paths regarding the hydrogen at the alkenyl position of cyclic carbonates coming from substrate (path A) or both substrate and catalyst (path B) were proposed on the basis of deuterium labeling experiments. The high activity of NHO-CO2 adduct was tentatively ascribed to its low stability for easily releasing the CO2 moiety and/or the desired product, a possible rate-limiting step in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide is a key C1 feedstock for the industrial production of hydrocarbons, where it is used to make millions of tonnes of chemicals, fuels, and solvents per annum. Many transition metal complexes can coordinate CO, but the formation of new C−C bonds in well-defined compounds from the scission and subsequent coupling of two or more CO moieties at a transition metal centre remains a challenge. Herein, we report the use of low-coordinate iron(II) complexes for the selective scission and homologation of CO affording unusual squaraines and iron carboxylates at ambient temperature and pressure. A modification of the ligand framework allows for the isolation and structural characterisation of a proposed metallacyclic Fe(II) carbene intermediate. These results indicate that, with the appropriate choice of supporting ligands, it is possible to cleave and homologate carbon monoxide under mild conditions using an abundant and environmentally benign low-coordinate, first row transition metal.

Abstract:Global warming and climate change are two severe environmental dangers brought on by the steady rise in the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere. Thus, in order to reduce this problem, it is essential to find an efficient material for high CO2 capture that can simultaneously exhibit good catalytic activity for CO2 utilization into useful chemicals. Herein, we report the synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene-based porous organic polymers (NHC-01 and NHC-02) using the Friedel–Crafts reaction with the imidazolium salt and bi-phenyl. Among the two porous polymers, NHC-01 exhibited outstanding stability, high flexibility, and high BET surface area (1298 m2 g–1). NHC-01 material displayed a high CO2 uptake capacity of 2.85 mmol g–1 under 1.0 bar pressure at 273 K. NHC-01/02 has been utilized as a metal-free organocatalyst for the CO2 conversion reaction due to its high surface area, high CO2 absorption capacity, and as it bears the NHC moiety in the organic network. NHC-01 selectively reduced CO2 to methanol via hydrosilylation with complete conversion of silane under atmospheric CO2 pressure. Furthermore, the catalyst also shows good catalytic activity toward N-formylation and reductive cyclization reactions, which showed good yields up to at least four catalytic cycles. The reaction mechanisms are also studied by theoretical simulation using density functional theory (DFT), which shows that intermediates have the appropriate free energy level for the catalyst to promote the reaction with a low energy barrier.

Abstract:The growing emphasis on sustainable chemistry has driven research into utilizing carbon dioxide (CO2) as a nontoxic, abundant, and cost‐effective C1 building block. CO2 offers a promising avenue for direct conversion into valuable chemicals ranging from fuels to pharmaceuticals. This review focuses on the utilization of CO2 for reductive N‐formylation/N‐methylation reactions of various amines, providing advantages over conventional methods involving toxic CO and other methylating reagents. The approach employs readily available reductants such as silane, borane reagents, and hydrogen (H2). The discussion encompasses recent developments in transition metal and organocatalyst systems for these reactions, highlighting mechanistic interpretations and factors influencing product selectivity.

Abstract:The valorization of CO2 presents a crucial challenge in the pursuit of carbon-neutral processes. Herein, we report the successful hydroaminomethylation of diverse alkenes with CO2 and H2, using N -het-erocyclic carbene-Ru coordination assemblies as solid single-site catalysts. Intriguingly, the incorporation of imidazolium carboxylates was discovered to profoundly enhance CO2 activation, leading to excellent yields (up to 98%) and selectivity (up to 98%) toward upgraded amines across a broad substrate scope. Remarkably, a record-breaking turnover number of up to 1.8 3 104 was achieved. The robustness of the solid catalysts facilitated effortless recovery and enabled their reuse for over 10 cycles without any discernible loss in activity and selectivity, making this protocol practical and straightforward for CO2 valorization.
Atomically Dispersed N/O-Coordinated Cobalt Catalyst Enables Aerobic Oxygenation of Olefins under Ambient Conditions

Abstract:Oxygenation of hydrocarbons with O2 as the oxidant is industrially important; however, current processes typically require high temperature and/or pressure. Herein, we report an atomically dispersed Co catalyst (Co1/NOC) capable of converting olefins to corresponding ketones and alcohols under ambient conditions with high activity and chemoselectivity. Isotopic labeling and intermediate trapping experiments reveal that reactions proceed via a heterogeneous hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism with carbon-centered radicals, followed by activating molecular oxygen. Co1/NOC surpasses homogeneous Co-based HAT catalysts in activity, showing that the properly doped carbon support could provide a suitable coordinating environment. The turnover frequency of Co1/NOC is more than three times higher than that of Co1/NC, which is attributed to the downshift d-band center of the cobalt center due to the extra O-coordination in the Co1/NOC. Furthermore, Co1/NOC is able to catalyze the oxygenation of styrene derivatives with sensitive functional groups, achieving selective oxygenation of the carbon–carbon double bond.

Abstract:Dioxygen is an abundant, selective, and sustainable oxidant that is considered ideal for organic transformations. Oxidative processes using dioxygen as the electron acceptor without oxygen atom incorporation into the substrate are often referred to as oxidase reactions. However, the ground state triplet nature of dioxygen makes such a synthetically valuable pathway incompatible with simple free alkyl radicals, a ubiquitous class of reactive intermediates in the daily synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and complex natural products. Here we report that a combination of strong cage effect and bimetallic radical-polar crossover successfully addresses this problem, and opens up an oxidase pathway in cobalt hydride catalysis. This leads to a general and chemoselective method that tackles several key challenges in catalytic hydroamination, a fundamental transformation for amine synthesis. Under balloon pressure of dioxygen at ambient temperature, we demonstrate single-step intra- and intermolecular formal addition of a variety of nitrogen nucleophiles, including free amines, sulfonamides, amides, and carbamates, to unactivated alkenes in the presence of a silane, under solvent-free conditions. Important medicinal chemistry building blocks such as a-branched tertiary amines can be easily accessed, which are often difficult targets otherwise due to their steric hindrance and reducing nature. Mechanistic studies including stoichiometric experiments with well-defined organocobalt complexes provide support for the key hypothesis, which points the way to the development of sustainable processes involving other nucleophiles based on the same design elements.

Abstract:Described for the first time is that carbon dioxide (CO2 ) can be successfully inserted into aryl C-H bonds of the backbone of a metal-organic framework (MOF) to generate free carboxylate groups, which serve as Brønsted acid sites for efficiently catalyzing the methanolysis of epoxides. The work delineates the very first example of utilizing CO2 for heterogeneous C-H activation and carboxylation reactions on MOFs, and opens a new avenue for CO2 chemical transformations under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:The reported metal-organic framework (MOF) catalyst realizes CO2 to methanol transformation under ambient conditions. The MOF is one rare example containing metal-free N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) moieties, which are installed using an in situ generation strategy involving the incorporation of an imidazolium bromide based linker into the MOF by postsynthetic ligand exchange. Importantly, the resultant NHC-functionalized MOF is the first catalyst capable of performing quantitative hydrogen transfer from silanes to CO2, thus achieving quantitative (>99%) methanol yield. Density-functional theory calculations indicate the high catalytic activity of the NHC sites in MOFs are attributed to the decreased reaction barrier of a reaction route involving the formation of an NHC-silane adduct. In addition, the MOF-immobilized NHC catalyst shows enhanced stability for up to eight cycles without base activation, as well as high selectivity towards the desired silyl methoxide product.

Abstract:The undesirable greenhouse gas CO2 is chemically also a sustainable carbon resource to synthesize value-added products. Herein we report a two-step strategy for the transformation of CO2 into dialkyl carbonates under ambient pressure and temperature. CO2 is initially captured and activated in 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids ([CmC1Im][An], m = 2, 4; An = [HCO3]−, [OAc]−, [Triz]−), forming the adducts of N-heterocyclic carbene (CmC1Im–CO2) and being loaded up to 26.9 wt%; the incorporated CO2 is then mixed with alcohols (ROH, R = CH3, C2H5) and alkyl halides (R*X*n, R* = R′, R″; X* = X′, X″; n = 1, 2, respectively) to synthesize dialkyl carbonates (RO(CO)OR′ in R′X′; RO(CO)OR in R″X″2), where high selectivity up to 99.9% and CO2 conversion of 40.2% are achieved. The reaction mechanism both with and without the intramolecular C–O bond cleavage is identified by 18O isotopic labelling experiments and further explored by combining 13C NMR characterization and DFT calculation considering solvation. The process integrated with regeneration cycles is promising for the energy-efficient conversion of CO2 under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide is an abundant and costefficient Cl building block for the carbonylation industry. Transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative C-H/C(X)-H carbonylation with CO provides one of the most straightforward approaches to construct carbonyl compounds. However, the use of stoichiometric oxidants would bring several drawbacks such as high cost and undesired chemical waste. Especially, the explosion limit is a potential safety hazard in oxidative carbonylation using O-2 as the oxidant. To overcome these issues, an electrochemical strategy for oxidative C-H/N-H carbonylation has been designed by taking advantage of anodic oxidation to recycle a cobalt catalyst, and H-2 is generated at the cathode. The intra- and intermolecular carbonylation products can be achieved with good functional group tolerance in 31%-99% yields. A plausible reaction mechanism involving a Co-II/Com(III)/Co-I catalytic cycle is proposed by the studies of XANES and CV.
