Abstract:The development of solvent-free, metal-free, recyclable organic catalysts is required for the current chemical fixation of carbon dioxide converted into cyclic carbonates. With the goal of reducing the cost, time, and energy consumption for the coupling reaction of CO(2)and epoxides, a series of highly active heterogeneous catalysts, based on a thiourea and quaternary ammonium salt system, are synthesized by using a thiol-ene click reaction under ultraviolet light. Benefitting from synergistic interactions of the electrophilic center (thiourea) and the nucleophilic site (ammonium bromide), the catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic selectivity (99 %) for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with a diverse range of epoxides under mild conditions (1.2 MPa, 100 degrees C). Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recycled by facile filtration and reused for 5 times without noticeable loss of activity and selectivity. This work provides a potential heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of carbon dioxide into high value-added chemicals with the combined advantages of low cost, easy recovery, and satisfactory catalytic properties.

Role of the Co-Catalyst in the Asymmetric Coupling of Racemic Epoxides with CO2 Using Multichiral Co(iii) Complexes: Product Selectivity and Enantioselectivity

Abstract:The kinetic resolution of racemic terminal epoxides with CO2 as reagent via enantioselective coupling represents an attractive method for affording enantiopure epoxides and optically active organic carbonates. A multichiral cobalt(III) complex in conjunction with an ammonium salt is an efficient catalyst system for the asymmetric coupling reaction of CO2 and racemic epoxides, and up to 97.1% ee for cyclic carbonate product and the highest k(rel) (kinetic resolution coefficient) to date of 75.8 was obtained. The variation of nucleophilic co-catalyst and its relative loading dramatically changes the product selectivity and enantioselectivity. Both the anion and cation of ammonium salts have significant effects on the catalytic kinetic resolution process. An ammonium salt consisting of an anion with poor leaving ability and a bulky cation benefits for improving the enantioselectivity. The excess co-catalyst loading favors selective production of cyclic carbonate via the intramolecular cyclic elimination of the formed linear carbonate. A higher k(rel) was observed in the excess co-catalyst loading, in comparison with one equivalent co-catalyst loading, predominantly resulting in polymer formation at the same temperature. It was also found that the excess co-catalyst loading led to significant increases in the regioselective ring-opening at the methylene carbon of various terminal epoxides, including styrene oxide with an electron-withdrawing group. The present study also offers a detailed mechanistic explanation of the role of the nucleophilic co-catalyst in the asymmetric coupling of racemic epoxides with CO2 using multichiral Co(III) complexes.

Abstract:Achieving simultaneously high selectivity and high rate in the coupling reaction of CO2 with poorly reacting oxetanes remains a major challenge. Here, the selective and nearly quantitative conversion of the coupling reaction of oxetanes with CO(2)into six-membered cyclic organic carbonates (COCs) is described, when a binary metal-free system composed of commercially available alkyl borane and onium iodide salts is used under 10 bar CO2 pressure between 90 and 110 degrees C. Kinetic investigations provide quantitatively the enthalpy and entropy of activation [Delta H double dagger = 6.7 +/- 1.2 kcal/ mol and Delta S double dagger = -57 +/- 4 cal/(mol.K)] of the back-biting, cyclic formation reaction. In addition to forming borate complexes with the anions responsible for the CO2/oxetane coupling reaction, these alkyl boranes activate the cyclic ethers as unambiguously confirmed by density functional theory studies. Upon selecting onium salts other than iodide-based ones, in particular those with poor leaving ability, the process is driven toward chain growth and the formation of linear polycarbonates. This metal-free system also exhibits both versatility and an activity comparable to that of metal catalysts (turnover frequency values of 14-124 h(-1)) for the synthesis of various five-membered COCs from epoxides and CO2.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constitute an evolving class of permanently porous and ordered materials, and they have recently attracted increased interest due to their intriguing morphological features and numerous applications in gas storage, adsorption, and catalysis. However, their low aqueous stabilities and tedious syntheses generally hamper their use in heterogeneous catalysis. Nonetheless, a capable and water‐stable heterogeneous catalytic system for coupling CO2/epoxides to generate industrially important cyclic carbonates is still of great interest. Herein, exceedingly water‐ and thermally stable 2D‐cobalt‐impregnated hydrazone‐linked fibrous COFs are reported as a catalyst for CO2/epoxide coupling reactions at ambient pressure. The functionalized cobalt (Co)‐doped COFs demonstrated excellent catalytic activities with the high TONs (80925) and TOFs (6466 h‐1), outperforming reported heterogeneous catalysts for CO2/epoxide coupling at ambient pressure. We found that the Co2+ ions within the COF matrix catalyze CO2 cycloaddition through density functional theory calculations. We also confirmed the excellent structural stability and consistent activity of Co‐doped COFs up to ten repeating cycles.

Abstract:The chemical fixation of CO2 into value-added products has recently received much attention. One of the most well-known methods is the coupling of CO2 with epoxides to form cyclic carbonates. Although this field has progressed considerably, it is still a challenge to perform the reaction with atmospheric CO2 or flue gas. Herein we described the development of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine hydrobromide ([DMAPH]Br) as a highly efficient and recyclable catalyst for the formation of cyclic carbonates from atmospheric CO2 and epoxides. In the presence of 1 mol % of [DMAPH]Br, excellent conversions and selectivities for a broad range of terminal epoxides were achieved under solvent-free conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst could be recycled over five times without appreciable loss of catalytic activity. The excellent catalytic performance of [DMAPH]Br is attributed to the enhanced synergistic interplay of acidic proton and bromide to epoxides and CO2 through positive charge delocalization on its cation.

Abstract:The fixation of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxide to form cyclic carbonates is industrially important because of the high economic value of the products. Quaternized carbon dots have great potential in CO2 cycloaddition under their high activity and facile synthesis without cocatalyst. Herein, novel quaternized carbon dots through a microwave method using citric acid and ethanolamine with different amounts of (2-bromoethyl)trimethylammonium bromide (Br-CDs) or (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride (Cl-CDs) were synthesized. All carbon dots were characterized by TEM, XPS, FT-IR, UV-Vis and Zeta potential analyzers as well as elemental analysis. Br1-CD showed the best catalytic activity (99%) and selectivity (99%) for CO2 cycloaddition with styrene oxide to 4-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one under suitable conditions (120°C, 8 h, and 0.1 MPa). Furthermore, the catalyst can be easily recycled up to five times.

Abstract:A well structure-defined dinuclear silver complex [Ag2(PDP)]OTf, where HPDP—bispyridylpyrrole ligand, OTf−—triflato, was used as catalyst for coupling of CO2 with epoxides to generate exclusive cyclic carbonates. Yield up to 87% was obtained for various substrates at a low loading of 0.1 mol%, at ambient temperature and pressure under solvent-free condition. The catalytic reusability of 1·OTf was also studied.

Abstract:A novel zinc(ii)-based 3D metal organic framework (MOF) [Zn-3(L)(3)(H2L)center dot 2DMF center dot H2O] with dual hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) groups of a free carboxyl and amine, was synthesized solvothermally via 2-aminoterephthalic acid (H2L) and 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid ligands. The carboxyl and amine in the prepared Zn-3(L)(3)(H2L) acting as HBD groups can promote the CO2 cycloaddition reaction with epoxides. Besides this, the contained sufficient amino groups showing Lewis base properties also facilitated Zn-3(L)(3)(H2L) to activate CO2 by forming a carbamate intermediate, while Zn(ii) centers acted as Lewis-acid sites accomplishing the epoxide activation. Therefore, Zn-3(L)(3)(H2L) with Lewis acid-base properties and dual HBD groups exhibited an efficient heterogeneous catalysis for the coupling of epoxides and CO2. The yield of the propylene carbonate (PC) achieved 99% under 80 degrees C, 1.0 MPa CO2 and solvent-free conditions. Corresponding carbonate yields of various epoxides could be over 95% even at room temperature by prolonging the reaction time. Moreover, Zn-3(L)(3)(H2L) showed extraordinary versatility to various epoxides and excellent recycling without any obvious loss in activity. Furthermore, a plausible mechanism was proposed for the CO2 cycloaddition to epoxides based on the structural evidence and catalytic effects.

Abstract:The cycloaddition of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxides to yield highly value-added cyclic carbonates is an effective way to chemically utilize and convert CO2. Here, a heterogeneous catalyst of imidazole ionic liquid-decorated covalent organic framework with polyoxometalates () was constructed by the covalent modification of ionic liquids to COFs and the electrostatic interaction between POMs and ionic liquids. The obtained shows high catalytic activity for CO2 cycloaddition reaction under mild conditions (1 atm and 80 °C) in the presence of a co-catalyst, and the catalytic activity of has no obvious decrease during reusing five times. The excellent catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of ionic liquids, POMs, and COFs. In the cycloaddition process, ionic liquids and the co-catalyst weaken the C–O bond of epoxides and promote the ring opening of epoxides. POMs as the Lewis acids facilitate the insertion of CO2 to form reaction intermediates. Abstract:The cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides is an important strategy to reach the goal of carbon neutral, at the same time high-value-added products can be obtained. The integration of Lewis acidic and alkaline sites makes ZIFs potential catalysts for the CO2 cycloaddition. Herein, through simply adjusting the water proportion in the synthesis solvent, a series of ZIF materials were prepared and applied in the CO2 cycloaddition. The transitional ZIF-(80)-Co combines the advantages of two-dimensional and three-dimensional ZIFs, namely the two-dimensional morphology, well-developed porous structures, higher CO2 adsorption capacity, and rich acidic/alkaline sites. The outstanding microstructures and surface properties of ZIF-(80)-Co contribute to its superior catalytic performance for the CO2 cycloaddition, and an epichlorohydrin (ECH) conversion of 96.9 % and a cyclic carbonate selectivity of 98 % are achieved without solvent and co-catalyst. Importantly, the cycloaddition of CO2 with ECH over ZIF-(80)-Co is faster than most of the reported ZIFs in literature. Furthermore, ZIF-(80)-Co also exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the CO2 cycloaddition with epoxy butane, allyl glycidyl ether, cyclohexene oxide and styrene oxide.

Abstract:Abstract A type of MCM-41 supported dual imidazolium ionic liquids have been synthesized and efficiently used as catalysts in the sustainable chemical conversion of CO2 and epoxides into cyclic carbonates. It was shown that the highest efficiency was achieved in the cycloaddition of a variety of epoxides and CO2 in the presence of the MCM-41@DILSCN solid catalyst under mild conditions. More interestingly, the catalyst was stable, very active, robust, and displayed good recyclability without significant loss of catalytic activity after six consecutive cycles during the process. Overall, the present protocol of synthesizing cyclic carbonates under solvent free conditions using MCM-41@DILSCN is promising for industrial applications.

Abstract:Two Lewis acidbase bifunctional, isostructural metalorganic frameworks (MOFs), [Zn-3(Hbtc)(2)(atz)(2)].CH3CN.2CH(3)OH (MOF-1) and [Co-3(Hbtc)(2)(atz)(2)].H2O.2DMF (MOF-2), containing NH2 groups and four-coordinated metal sites were fabricated successfully, and the structures were thoroughly characterized by X-ray crystallography, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N-2 adsorption/desorption techniques. Satisfactorily, the novel MOFs with a three-dimensional framework were highly efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts for selective fixation of CO2 to cyclic carbonates under mild conditions in the absence of solvent. The influences of various reaction parameters on catalytic performance were systematically investigated. Also the catalysts showed excellent versatility to epoxides with different substituents and could be easily recyclable with high activity. Additionally, the self-catalyzed mechanism as well as synergistic mechanism with tetrabutylammonium bromide (Bu4NBr) for CO2 conversion was proposed.

Abstract:The cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides is an important reaction and has got increasing attention. In this work, a series of DBU-based ionic liquids (DILs) were synthesized via facile neutralization of superbase 1,8-Diazabicyclo [5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) with corresponding hydrogen bond donor acids, such as D(-)-tartaric acid (TA), malic acid (MA) and succinic acid (SA). The DILs cooperated with ZnI2 were first evaluated in detail for catalyzing the coupling reaction of CO2 with propylene oxide (PO), and DIL-1 exhibited obviously enhanced catalytic activity under 80 degrees C, 3 MPa and solvent-free conditions. The effects of reaction parameters on the activity for propylene carbonate (PC) synthesis were thoroughly investigated, and a possible synergistic catalytic mechanism was proposed. The catalytic system reported here could be separated by simple centrifugation from the products after reaction and then reused efficiently. Moreover, the catalytic system showed the advantages of simple synthesis, high catalytic activity, low cost, and substrate versatility for CO2 conversion to cyclic carbonates.
Solvent- and Co-Catalyst-Free Cycloaddition of Carbon Dioxide and Epoxides Catalyzed by Recyclable Bifunctional Niobium Complexes

Abstract:CO2, as a cheap and abundant renewable C1 resource, can be used to synthesize high value-added chemicals. In this paper, a series of bifunctional metallic niobium complexes were synthesized and their structures were characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. All of these complexes have been proved to be efficient catalysts for the coupling reaction of CO2 and epoxides to obtain cyclic carbonates under solvent- and co-catalyst-free conditions. By using CO2 and propylene oxide as a model reaction, the optimal reaction conditions were systematically screened as: 100 °C, 1 MPa, 2 h, ratio of catalyst to alkylene oxide 1:100. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the bifunctional niobium catalysts can efficiently catalyze the coupling reaction with high yield and excellent selectivity (maximum yield of >99% at high pressure and 96.8% at atmospheric pressure). Moreover, this series of catalysts can also catalyze the coupling reaction at atmospheric pressure and most of them showed high conversion of epoxide. The catalysts have good substrate suitability and are also applicable to a variety of epoxides including diepoxides and good catalytic performances were achieved for producing the corresponding cyclic carbonates in most cases. Furthermore, the catalysts can be easily recovered by simple filtration and reused for at least five times without obvious loss of catalytic activity and selectivity. Kinetic studies were carried out preliminarily for the bifunctional niobium complexes with different halogen ions (3a(Cl-), 3b(Br-), 3c(I-)) and the formation activation energies (Ea) of cyclic carbonates were obtained. The order of apparent activation energy Ea is 3a (96.2 kJ/mol) > 3b (68.2 kJ/mol) > 3c (37.4 kJ/mol). Finally, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:The effective transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable products is promising in green and sustainable chemistry. The coupling reaction of CO2 with epoxides to afford cyclic carbonates is an atom-economic pathway for CO2 fixation. Many catalysts have been developed for this coupling reaction, however, very few of them were reported for the coupling reaction of CO2 with bisepoxides. This work describes an efficient one-pot coupling reaction of CO2, propylene oxide (PO) and bisepoxides without the addition of external organic solvents by using a nanolamellar zinc-cobalt double metal cyanide complex (Zn-Co(III) DMCC) as the catalyst and cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) as the co-catalyst. Propylene carbonate (PC) and bis(cyclic carbonate)s were obtained at the same time with high monomer conversions (PO: 93.6%, bisepoxides: 82.9%). The in situ produced PC acted as a good solvent for the coupling reaction of CO2 with bisepoxides. Two products could be easily separated by distillation or precipitation. The application of the obtained bis(cyclic carbonate) s was also preliminarily investigated. A non-isocyanate route for synthesizing polyurethanes with massive hydroxyl groups was proposed.
