Abstract:The development of solvent-free, metal-free, recyclable organic catalysts is required for the current chemical fixation of carbon dioxide converted into cyclic carbonates. With the goal of reducing the cost, time, and energy consumption for the coupling reaction of CO(2)and epoxides, a series of highly active heterogeneous catalysts, based on a thiourea and quaternary ammonium salt system, are synthesized by using a thiol-ene click reaction under ultraviolet light. Benefitting from synergistic interactions of the electrophilic center (thiourea) and the nucleophilic site (ammonium bromide), the catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic selectivity (99 %) for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with a diverse range of epoxides under mild conditions (1.2 MPa, 100 degrees C). Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recycled by facile filtration and reused for 5 times without noticeable loss of activity and selectivity. This work provides a potential heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of carbon dioxide into high value-added chemicals with the combined advantages of low cost, easy recovery, and satisfactory catalytic properties.
Triethyl Borane-Regulated Selective Production of Polycarbonates and Cyclic Carbonates for the Coupling Reaction of CO2 with Epoxides

Abstract:The copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxides via organocatalysis is still a big challenge. This work reports the selective copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides bearing a phenyl group, i.e., phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE) and styrene oxide (StO), catalyzed by a combination of Lewis bases (LBs) and excess triethyl borane (TEB). The resultant CO2/PGE copolymers presented a molar fraction of carbonate units (F-CO2) of more than 99%, with a regioregularity of ca. 92%. The weight percentage of the cyclic carbonate (W-CC) was less than 1 wt%. The turnover frequency (TOF) was as high as 38 h(-1) for producing the CO2/PGE copolymer with a number-average molecular weight (M-n) of 16.6 kg mol(-1) and a dispersity (D) of 1.2. What is of importance is that the dosage of TEB had a strong impact on the selectivity, where the regioregular copolymer or cyclic carbonate could be selectively produced by simply tuning the TEB/LB molar ratios, as revealed by in situ FT-IR spectroscopy. It is proposed that excess TEB could either promote the equilibrium to generate the TEB-coordinated growing anion or activate the epoxide for enhancing the reactivity. Both copolymers are promising optical materials as colorless solids with a high refractive index (n(d)) of 1.55-1.56 (590 nm, 20 degrees C, cast film).

Abstract:The use of carbon dioxide as a carbon source for the synthesis of organic chemicals can contribute to a more sustainable chemical industry. Because CO(2) is such a thermodynamically stable molecule, few effective catalysts are available to facilitate this transformation. Currently, the major industrial processes that convert CO(2) into viable products generate urea and hydroxybenzoic acid. One of the most promising new technologies for the use of this abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic renewable resource is the alternating copolymerization of CO(2) and epoxides to provide biodegradable polycarbonates, which are highly valuable polymeric materials. Because this process often generates byproducts, such as polyether or ether linkages randomly dispersed within the polycarbonate chains and/or the more thermodynamically stable cyclic carbonates, the choice of catalyst is critical for selectively obtaining the expected product. In this Account, we outline our efforts to develop highly active Co(III)-based catalysts for the selective production of polycarbonates from the alternating copolymerization of CO(2) with epoxides. Binary systems consisting of simple (salen)Co(III)X and a nucleophilic cocatalyst exhibited high activity under mild conditions even at 0.1 MPa CO(2) pressure and afforded copolymers with >99% carbonate linkages and a high regiochemical control (∼95% head-to-tail content). Discrete, one-component (salen)Co(III)X complexes bearing an appended quaternary ammonium salt or sterically hindered Lewis base showed excellent activity in the selectively alternating copolymerization of CO(2) with both aliphatic epoxides and cyclohexene oxide at high temperatures with low catalyst loading and/or low pressures of CO(2). Binary or one-component catalysts based on unsymmetric multichiral Co(III) complexes facilitated the efficient enantioselective copolymerization of CO(2) with epoxides, providing aliphatic polycarbonates with >99% head-to-tail content. These systems were also very efficient in catalyzing the terpolymerization of cyclohexene oxide, propylene oxide and CO(2). The resulting terpolymer had a single glass-transition temperature and a single thermolysis peak. This Account also provides a thorough mechanistic understanding of the high activities, excellent selectivities, and unprecedented stereochemical control of these Co(III)-based catalysts in the production of CO(2) copolymers . The catalysis occurs through a cooperative monometallic mechanism, in which the Lewis acidic Co(III) ion serves as electrophile to activate then epoxide and the nucleophilic counterion or cocatalyst serves as a nucleophile to initiate polymer-chain growth. The high activity and excellent regioselectivity observed in the epoxide ring-opening reactions results from epoxide activation through the moderate electrophilicity of the Co(III) ion, the fast insertion of CO(2) into the Co-O bond, and the facile dissociation of the propagating carboxylate species from the central metal ion. The reversible intra- or intermolecular Co-O bond formation and dissociation helps to stabilize the active Co(III) species against reversion to the inactive Co(II) ion. We also describe our laboratory's recent preparation of the first crystalline CO(2)-based polymer via highly stereospecific copolymerization of CO(2) and meso-cyclohexene oxide and the selective synthesis of perfectly alternating polycarbonates from the coupling of CO(2) with epoxides bearing an electron-withdrawing group.

Abstract:A well structure-defined dinuclear silver complex [Ag2(PDP)]OTf, where HPDP—bispyridylpyrrole ligand, OTf−—triflato, was used as catalyst for coupling of CO2 with epoxides to generate exclusive cyclic carbonates. Yield up to 87% was obtained for various substrates at a low loading of 0.1 mol%, at ambient temperature and pressure under solvent-free condition. The catalytic reusability of 1·OTf was also studied.

Abstract:Achieving simultaneously high selectivity and high rate in the coupling reaction of CO2 with poorly reacting oxetanes remains a major challenge. Here, the selective and nearly quantitative conversion of the coupling reaction of oxetanes with CO(2)into six-membered cyclic organic carbonates (COCs) is described, when a binary metal-free system composed of commercially available alkyl borane and onium iodide salts is used under 10 bar CO2 pressure between 90 and 110 degrees C. Kinetic investigations provide quantitatively the enthalpy and entropy of activation [Delta H double dagger = 6.7 +/- 1.2 kcal/ mol and Delta S double dagger = -57 +/- 4 cal/(mol.K)] of the back-biting, cyclic formation reaction. In addition to forming borate complexes with the anions responsible for the CO2/oxetane coupling reaction, these alkyl boranes activate the cyclic ethers as unambiguously confirmed by density functional theory studies. Upon selecting onium salts other than iodide-based ones, in particular those with poor leaving ability, the process is driven toward chain growth and the formation of linear polycarbonates. This metal-free system also exhibits both versatility and an activity comparable to that of metal catalysts (turnover frequency values of 14-124 h(-1)) for the synthesis of various five-membered COCs from epoxides and CO2.

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added organic compounds has received more and more attention over recent years, not only because this gas is one of the major anthropogenic greenhouse gases, but also because it has been regarded as an abundant, inexpensive, nontoxic, nonflammable, and renewable one-carbon (C1) resource. Along these lines, the synthesis of five-membered cyclic carbonates employing CO2 as a safe alternative to toxic reagents such as phosgene or its derivatives is of great interest because of their wide range of applications in organic synthesis. However, most of CO2 incorporation reactions into carbonates are carried out in toxic and non-recyclable organic solvents. Furthermore, these transformations usually proceed at elevated pressures or supercritical CO2 conditions. Recently, several catalytic systems have been developed that allow the synthesis of functionalized carbonates from the reaction of atmospheric CO2 with corresponding epoxides under solvent-free conditions. This review is an attempt to summarize the most important advances and discoveries in this interesting research arena. The review is divided into three major sections. The first section will discuss ionic liquid catalyzed coupling reactions. The second will cover organocatalyzed reactions. The third focuses exclusively on metal-catalyzed fixations. Notably, the third section has been classified based on the metal element that carries out the catalysis (i.e. copper, palladium, zinc).

Abstract:The effective transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable products is promising in green and sustainable chemistry. The coupling reaction of CO2 with epoxides to afford cyclic carbonates is an atom-economic pathway for CO2 fixation. Many catalysts have been developed for this coupling reaction, however, very few of them were reported for the coupling reaction of CO2 with bisepoxides. This work describes an efficient one-pot coupling reaction of CO2, propylene oxide (PO) and bisepoxides without the addition of external organic solvents by using a nanolamellar zinc-cobalt double metal cyanide complex (Zn-Co(III) DMCC) as the catalyst and cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) as the co-catalyst. Propylene carbonate (PC) and bis(cyclic carbonate)s were obtained at the same time with high monomer conversions (PO: 93.6%, bisepoxides: 82.9%). The in situ produced PC acted as a good solvent for the coupling reaction of CO2 with bisepoxides. Two products could be easily separated by distillation or precipitation. The application of the obtained bis(cyclic carbonate) s was also preliminarily investigated. A non-isocyanate route for synthesizing polyurethanes with massive hydroxyl groups was proposed.

Abstract:The chemical fixation of CO2 into value-added products has recently received much attention. One of the most well-known methods is the coupling of CO2 with epoxides to form cyclic carbonates. Although this field has progressed considerably, it is still a challenge to perform the reaction with atmospheric CO2 or flue gas. Herein we described the development of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine hydrobromide ([DMAPH]Br) as a highly efficient and recyclable catalyst for the formation of cyclic carbonates from atmospheric CO2 and epoxides. In the presence of 1 mol % of [DMAPH]Br, excellent conversions and selectivities for a broad range of terminal epoxides were achieved under solvent-free conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst could be recycled over five times without appreciable loss of catalytic activity. The excellent catalytic performance of [DMAPH]Br is attributed to the enhanced synergistic interplay of acidic proton and bromide to epoxides and CO2 through positive charge delocalization on its cation.

Abstract:A type of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC)-diboron adducts are used as a catalyst for the coupling of CO2 with epoxides. The multifunctional organocatalysts containing both boron as a Lewis acidic site and pyridine nitrogen as a Lewis basic site, offer an efficient alternative to traditional organoboron catalyst for conversion of CO2 and epoxides into cyclic carbonates. The NHC-diboron adducts in combination with use of tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) as a nucleophile, enables catalyzing the coupling of CO2 and epoxides to prepare the cyclic carbonates in high yields under relatively mild conditions (50 °C and 1 MPa of CO2). The cooperative activation of NHC-diboron adducts was elaborated by in-situ infrared spectroscopy and the electrospray ionization-high-resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-HRMS). These results suggested that Lewis acid boron center in NHC-diboron adducts activate epoxide by coordinated with oxygen atom of epoxides to promote the ring-opening of epoxides, and the pyridine nitrogen could act as a Lewis basic site to activate CO2.

Abstract:Fixing CO2 into value-added cyclic carbonates is an effective way to reduce CO2 emissions. A metal-free and solvent-free catalytic system has been developed for the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides into corresponding cyclic carbonates. The catalytic system can in-situ catalyze the conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates from actual flue gas under atmospheric pressure with a carbonate yield of up to 99.4%. Water resistance experiment and catalytic mechanism were investigated in detail. A ten-fold amplification reaction was conducted at 70 °C and atmospheric pressure, and the residual CO2 in the flue gas decreased to 985 ppm, indicating that the CO2 in the flue gas was effectively captured and removed under very mild conditions. This work provides a feasible approach for in-situ capture and conversion of CO2 in flue gas at atmospheric pressure.

Abstract:Photocatalytic cycloaddition of CO 2 with epoxides to produce cyclic carbonate is a hot research topic for achieving carbon neutrality. In this work, a catalyst (CoFe 2 O 4 @TPA) with bimetallic oxides doped with organic ligands was synthesized, which could efficiently fix CO 2 to synthesize cyclic carbonate in solvent-free and atmospheric environment by photothermal catalysis. Various characterization results suggest that the catalyst exhibited efficient photocatalytic performance upon the addition of organic ligands (TPA). This pathway of using photocatalytic catalytic reactions under simple conditions provides a new idea for the synthesis of valuable compounds from fixed CO 2 .

Abstract:A new catalytic route has been developed for the coupling of epoxides and CO2 affording polymerizable six‐membered bicyclic carbonates. Cyclic epoxides equipped with a b‐positioned OH group can be transformed into structurally diverse bicyclic cyclic carbonates in good yields and with high selectivity. Key to the chemo‐selectivity is the difference between the reactivity of syn‐ and anti‐configured epoxy alcohols, with the latter leading to six‐membered ring carbonate formation in the presence of a binary Al(III) aminotriphenolate complex/DIPEA catalyst. X‐ray analyses show that the conversion of the syn‐configured substrate evolves via a standard double inversion pathway providing a five‐membered carbonate product, whereas the anti‐isomer allows for activation of the oxirane unit of the substrate opposite to the pendent alcohol. The potential use of these bicyclic products is shown in ring‐opening polymerization offering access to rigid polycarbonates with improved thermal resistance.

Abstract:In the present study, we demonstrated the synthesis of copper oxychloride anionic benzotriazolium ionic liquid-modified periodic mesoporous organosilica PMO@ILCu2(OH)3Cl2(x) as efficient and green retrievable heterogeneous nanocatalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates via cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides. Compared to other nanocatalysts, a superior catalytic activity was observed with PMO@ILCu2(OH)3Cl2(1.0), giving excellent yields and selectivities under solvent- and cocatalyst-free conditions. We also found that the existence of intensification synergistic effects from the hydroxyl groups sites of periodic mesoporous organosilica and the active sites of the functionalized ionic liquid, resulting in the enhanced catalytic activity. The catalytic process displayed ease of recovery, excellent stability and recyclability for at least five runs without significant loss of its catalytic activity. The developed catalytic system is proven to be a powerful tool for the chemical fixation of CO2 with epoxides to produce the cyclic carbonates.Graphical abstractAn efficient protocol is described for producing cyclic carbonates in excellent yields and selectivities under cocatalyst- and solvent-free conditions by treating epoxides with carbon dioxide, promoted by copper oxychloride anionic benzotriazolium ionic liquid-modified periodic mesoporous organosilica.

Abstract:Bifunctional rare earth complexes have been developed for the cycloaddition reactions of epoxides and CO2, under atmospheric pressure, without co‐catalyst to produce value‐added cyclic carbonates. Comparative and kinetic experiments confirm the existence of intramolecular synergies between the central metal and the nucleophilic reagent within the catalytic molecule. Comprehensive Summary Eight zwitterionic rare earth metal complexes stabilized by amino‐bridged tris(phenolato) ligands bearing quaternary ammonium side‐arms were synthesized and characterized. These complexes were used as single‐component catalysts for the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides, and their catalytic activities are obviously higher than those of their binary analogues. Further studies revealed that the halide anions (Cl–, Br–, I–) and the metal complexes influenced the catalytic activity, and the lanthanum complex bearing iodide anion showed the highest catalytic activity for this addition reaction. A variety of mono‐substituted epoxides were converted to cyclic carbonates in good to excellent yields (55%—99%) with high selectivity (> 99%) at 30 °C and 1 bar CO2, whereas internal epoxides required higher both reaction temperatures (60—120 °C) and catalyst loading (2 mol%) for high yields. The catalyst was recyclable for four times without noticeable loss of catalytic activity. Based on the results of kinetic studies and in situ IR reactions, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed.

Traditionally, halide anions were frequently used as cocatalysts for catalysis CCE reaction due to their excellent nucleophilic and leaving abilities. However, the halides were known for their corrosive effects on process reactors, and their treatment was a burden. Consequently, there was a substantial increase in demand for halide-free catalysis in the CCE reaction. Herein, a series of bifunctional catalysts were designed for CCE reactions. The reactions were assessed under conditions of 120 °C and 1 MPa, employing a catalyst loading of 0.5 mol% over 24 hours. The dual activation mechanism of the catalyst was confirmed through NMR titration and control experiments. As a bifunctional catalyst, the ion pair polarized the oxygen atom of the epoxide via H-bonding with N+–H, while the phenolate anion activated carbon dioxide simultaneously. This study introduced the pyridinium base binary organocatalyst, exemplifying a halide-free hydrogen bond donor (HBD) anion organocatalyst with broad applicability for CO2 utilization.

Direct oxidative carboxylation of olefins into cyclic carbonates at ambient pressure

Abstract:The direct synthesis of cyclic carbonate from carbon dioxide (CO2) and olefins is attracting much interest in recent years. Herein, 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene-functionalized phosphonate salts have been synthesized and characterized fully by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and Fourier Transform-infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) etc. The as-obtained salts have been employed as efficient catalysts for one-pot synthesis of cyclic carbonate from styrene and CO2 through oxidative carboxylation reaction under very mild conditions (0.1 MPa CO2, 80 °C) without any other solvents. The yield of cyclic carbonate can reach up to ca. 70 % in the presence of ZnBr2 under the mild reaction condition. Besides, the catalyst can be recycled at least five times without significantly losing its catalytic activity. This approach can be extended to various styrene derivatives and good yields of cyclic carbonates was achieved under ambient conditions. Based on activity evaluation, reaction kinetics and DFT calculation, the six-membered carboxyphosphate species was proposed as a crucial intermediate species and played a crucial role in CO2 activation. Finally, the reaction mechanism is proposed accordingly.
