Abstract:The energy straggling of 2.0～5.4 MeV carbon ions in aluminum films evaporated onto K4 glass substrates was measured with the Au marked RBS method. The surface roughness with zero was obtained from experiment. It supplied a method for determination of the surface roughness with zero. The present result was compared with the Bohr theory and the results of published experimental work It is shown that the Bohr theory is not appropriate to description of the energy straggling of low energy heavy ion in films, and the surface roughness could seriusly affect the energy straggling. We have to pay more attention to both points mentioned above in the ion beam analyses, ion implantations and some nuclear physics expriments.

Abstract:Energy loss of 0.45-5.0 MeV 4He ions in Au and Ag films were measured with the Rutherford backscattering method, and the stopping powers at lower energy range were extracted by comparing with that determined by Anderson et al. at higher energy range. Significant deviation between the experimental data and the semiempirical calculations by TRIM-90 appears around the stopping maximum. The accuracy of our results was expected to be ±1%.

Abstract:In this paper, the time evolution of high energy heavy ion collisions is described by Fokker-Planck Equation. The rapidity distribution of the final state particles is analysed with this model for ~(16)O and ~(32)S particles beams of 200 AGeV. The relaxation time for various systems are determined. Results comparable to the usual empirical data are obtained.

Abstract:In this article, we report the 170° backscattering cross sections of 4He from 16O in the energy range of 2.0-9.0 MeV. Our measurements show that the alpha-oxygen scattering remains Rutherford scattering up to Eα=2.35 MeV, and there exist two energy regions, namely 5.55-5.85 MeV and 8.50-8.80 MeV, where the cross sections are enhanced and show a smooth variation. The measured laboratory cross sections are 9.50-9.97 and 35.0-33.0 times greater than the Rutherford values, respectively. In the 8.50-8.80 MeV region, the cross sections at scattering angles of 160°, 165°, 170° and 175° were measured and found to be strongly angle-dependent. A most strong resonance occurred at 7.60 MeV, where the cross section is 200 times of its Rutherford value. This resonance has been used to measure the 16O concentration on a Cu surface, with a sensitivity of 1×1015 oxygen atoms/cm2. Besides, we have studied the backscattering angle dependence of the threshold energy, i. e., the energy at which the elastic cross section begins to deviate from its Rutherford value. The experimental result seems not in agreement with the prediction made from the analytical formula developed by Bozoian et al.

Abstract:235U and 238U are very important isotopes in the nuclear energy system. Their neutron-induced fission cross sections have been measured intensively and evaluated as standard up to 200 MeV. However, as a matter of fact, the experimental data in the high-energy region are scarce. This work reports the measurement of 235, 238U(n, f) cross sections relative to n-p scattering performed at the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) back-streaming neutron facility (Back-n). Preliminary results of 235, 238U(n, f) cross sections from 10 to 66 MeV are obtained, which are generally following the shape of the IAEA standard. However, significant discrepancies are observed at some given energies, which will be further studied.

Abstract:In order to study the energy loss and its straggling of MeV energy ions in biological samples, onion membrane samples with different thickness were irradiated with 1.0, 1.8, 2.8 MeV H+ and 4.5 MeV He+ , respectively. The energy loss and straggling of these ions after penetrating the biological samples were measured with transmission energy spectrum. The experimental results show that the energy losses of MeV energy ions in the biological samples mentioned above are consistent with TRIM simulation but their energy straggling are different from the simulations. Considering the inhomogeneous mass density and structure of biological materials, we modified Bohr’s energy straggling theory, and then the results are in good agreemen with the experimental energy straggling values.

Abstract:The equilibrium structures and dynamics of a nanoscale system are regulated by a complex potential energy surface (PES). This is a key target of theoretical calculations but experimentally elusive. We report the measurement of a key PES parameter for a model nanosystem: size-selected Au nanoclusters, soft-landed on amorphous silicon nitride supports. We obtain the energy difference between the most abundant structural isomers of magic number Au561 clusters, the decahedron and face-centred-cubic (fcc) structures, from the equilibrium proportions of the isomers. These are measured by atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, with an ultra-stable heating stage, as a function of temperature (125-500 °C). At lower temperatures (20-125 °C) the behaviour is kinetic, exhibiting down conversion of metastable decahedra into fcc structures; the higher state is repopulated at higher temperatures in equilibrium. We find the decahedron is 0.040 ± 0.020 eV higher in energy than the fcc isomer, providing a benchmark for the theoretical treatment of nanoparticles.

Abstract:Gold fluoride is a very unique species. In this work, we reported the resonant photodetachment spectra of cryogenically cooled AuF− via the slow-electron velocity-map imaging method. We determined the electron affinity of AuF to be 17 976(8) cm−1 or 2.2287(10) eV. We observed a dipole-bound state with a binding energy of 24(8) cm−1, a valence excited state with a binding energy of 1222(11) cm−1, and a resonant state with an energy of 814(12) cm−1 above the photodetachment threshold. An unusual vibrational transition with Δn = −3 was observed in the autodetachment from the dipole-bound state. Moreover, two excited states of neutral AuF were recognized for the first time, located at 13 720(78) cm−1 and 16 188(44) cm−1 above the AuF ground state.

Abstract:Measurements of the total reaction cross section for C12-16, N14-17, and O16-18 on carbon target at intermediate energies were performed on the Radioactive Ion Beam Line of the Heavy ion Research Facility in Lanzhou. A larger enhancement of sigma(R) for C-15 was observed than for its neighbors. Evidence for possible anomalous nuclear structure in C-15 was revealed in the analysis of the total reaction cross section in terms of the difference factor d.

Abstract:Fusion-evaporation reactions of carbon and oxygen isotopes at near-Coulomb-barrier energies are important subjects in nuclear-reaction studies. They are closely related to nucleosynthesis in astrophysics and may provide novel opportunities to study the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-clustering effect in light nuclei. In this work, the $^{16\ensuremath{-}18}\mathrm{O}+^{16}\mathrm{O}$ and $^{16,18}\mathrm{O}+^{12,13}\mathrm{C}$ fusion-evaporation reactions are studied by using the statistical model based on the Hauser-Feshbach formalism. It is found that the statistical model with the original Gilbert-Cameron level-density formula typically underestimates the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-emission cross sections. To overcome this problem, we introduce for the residual nuclei a new level-density formula with the correction term inspired by theoretical considerations on the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-clustering effect. Compared with the original Gilbert-Cameron level-density formula, our statistical-model calculations with the new level-density formula show significant improvements.

Abstract:OROCHI (Optical Radioisotope atom Observation in Condensed Helium as Ion-catcher)" is new laser spectroscopy technique to determine nuclear spins and moments of exotic nuclei.In this technique, we utilize the combination of optical pumping and double resonance techniques to measure Zeeman splittings and hyperfine splittings of atoms in superfluid helium (He II).Recently, we have observed the hyperfine splitting transition of stable 197 Au in He II.This success has distinctly shown the applicability of OROCHI to the exotic Au isotopes.In this report, we present the achieved atomic spin polarization (more than 80%) and the following observation of the double resonance spectra of Au atoms in He II.
A New Study for 16 at the Energies of Nuclear Astrophysics Interest: the Inverse of Key Nucleosynthesis Reaction 12

Abstract:The key reaction 12C(α,γ)16O in nuclear astrophysics is difficult to be performed experimentally at low energy because of the Coulomb barrier. But it is different if we use its inverse reaction 16O(γ,α)12C because the cross-section of 16O(γ,α)12C is almost 100 times larger than the cross-section of 12C(α,γ)16O at the same center of mass energy (Ec.m.) based on our study. In the present work, we study the angular distributions and total cross-sections of 16O(γ,α)12C which are induced by polarized photon using the resonance theory of low energy reaction. The differential cross-sections as well as E1 and E2 transition cross-sections at low nuclear astrophysics energies are also calculated. The feature of the future Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source (SLEGS) facility, a low energy γ-ray beam line with a high photon flux, is presented. The experiments of 16O(γ,α)12C are simulated with a time projection chamber (TPC) and a realistic SLEGS layout. The lowest (Ec.m.), which can be obtained from the simulation, is 0.8 MeV with the 20–30% uncertainty for the one-month beam time of SLEGS. The extracted S factors of 12C(α,γ)16O and their statistical uncertainties from the simulation are compared with the existing data and some theoretical calculations. It is shown that the promising 16O(γ,α)12C experiment at SLEGS can largely reduce the statistical uncertainties of the 12C(α,γ)16O experiment at low energies.

Abstract:Energy loss and energy straggling of energetic ions through natural dehydrated biological samples were investigated using transmission technique. Biological samples (onion membrane, egg coat, and tomato coat) with different mass thickness were studied, together with Mylar for comparison. The energy loss and energy straggling of MeV H and He ions after penetrating the biological and Mylar samples were measured. The experimental results show that the average energy losses of MeV ions through the biological samples are consistent with SRIM predictions; however, large deviation in energy straggling is observed between the measured results and the SRIM predictions. Taking into account inhomogeneity in mass density and structure of the biological sample, an energy straggling formula is suggested, and the experimental energy straggling values are well predicted by the proposed formula.

The double-folding Sao Paulo and Akyuz Winther potentials were used as nuclear interactions giving again similar results. The agreement with the data is slightly improved at intermediate angles. The sensibility of the CDCC effects upon the nuclear interaction potential was checked. Finally, the influence of inelastic states of both projectile and target, the one-proton, one-neutron, two-neutron and $$\\alpha $$\n transfer channels on the quasi-elastic scattering angular distribution is analyzed in the frame of the coupled channel and coupled reaction channel methods, respectively. It is observed that the coupling to the first excited state of $$^{17}\\hbox {F}$$\n is the one that affects more the elastic scattering, although the inelastic channels of the target also influence it when compared with the optical model results. The effect of the transfer channels on the quasi-elastic angular distribution is negligible.

Abstract:232Th/233U fuel cycle is an alternate candidate for future nuclear energy. Neutron-induced fission cross section of 232Th is one of the important nuclear data if using thorium as the fuel in the future. 232Th(n, f) cross sections from 1 to 300 MeV were measured at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) Back-streaming neutron facility (Back-n) relative to 235U(n, f) and n-p scattering. A fast ionization chamber for fission cross section measurement (FIXM) and a proton recoil telescope (PRT) were used to perform the measurement. The neutron energy in this measurement reaches up to 300 MeV which is supposed to be the highest among the current Experimental Nuclear Reaction Data (EXFOR) library. It stands as the only experimental data in the region of 200-300 MeV in EXFOR as well. The experimental and evaluated data of 232Th(n, f) cross section above 60 MeV are scarce, the measurement data of this work will be valuable references for future evaluation in high energy. For the data below 60 MeV, most of our data are more consistent with ENDF/B-VIII.0, excepting in the region of 1-2 MeV where our data are more in favor of CENDL-3.2.

Abstract:This paper have measured the density-normalized effective ionization coefficients (alpha-eta)/N, (alpha and eta are the ionization find attachment coefficients, respectively) and the electr-Dn drift velocity V(e) in Carbon tetrafluoride (CF(4)) using a pulsed Townsend technique. The overall density-normalized electric field strength E/N ranged from 50 to 250 Td (1 Td=10(-17) Vcm(2)). From the above plots for (alpha-eta)/N, we have derived the limiting or critical field strength, (E/N)lim approximate to 28 Td, which is the value of E/N at which (alpha-eta)/N=0.
