Abstract:Fusion-evaporation reactions of carbon and oxygen isotopes at near-Coulomb-barrier energies are important subjects in nuclear-reaction studies. They are closely related to nucleosynthesis in astrophysics and may provide novel opportunities to study the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-clustering effect in light nuclei. In this work, the $^{16\ensuremath{-}18}\mathrm{O}+^{16}\mathrm{O}$ and $^{16,18}\mathrm{O}+^{12,13}\mathrm{C}$ fusion-evaporation reactions are studied by using the statistical model based on the Hauser-Feshbach formalism. It is found that the statistical model with the original Gilbert-Cameron level-density formula typically underestimates the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-emission cross sections. To overcome this problem, we introduce for the residual nuclei a new level-density formula with the correction term inspired by theoretical considerations on the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-clustering effect. Compared with the original Gilbert-Cameron level-density formula, our statistical-model calculations with the new level-density formula show significant improvements.

Abstract:The energy straggling of 2.0～5.4 MeV carbon ions in aluminum films evaporated onto K4 glass substrates was measured with the Au marked RBS method. The surface roughness with zero was obtained from experiment. It supplied a method for determination of the surface roughness with zero. The present result was compared with the Bohr theory and the results of published experimental work It is shown that the Bohr theory is not appropriate to description of the energy straggling of low energy heavy ion in films, and the surface roughness could seriusly affect the energy straggling. We have to pay more attention to both points mentioned above in the ion beam analyses, ion implantations and some nuclear physics expriments.

Abstract:In this paper, the time evolution of high energy heavy ion collisions is described by Fokker-Planck Equation. The rapidity distribution of the final state particles is analysed with this model for ~(16)O and ~(32)S particles beams of 200 AGeV. The relaxation time for various systems are determined. Results comparable to the usual empirical data are obtained.

Abstract:Measurements of the total reaction cross section for C12-16, N14-17, and O16-18 on carbon target at intermediate energies were performed on the Radioactive Ion Beam Line of the Heavy ion Research Facility in Lanzhou. A larger enhancement of sigma(R) for C-15 was observed than for its neighbors. Evidence for possible anomalous nuclear structure in C-15 was revealed in the analysis of the total reaction cross section in terms of the difference factor d.

Abstract:X-gamma-ray coincidence measurement is a good method to obtain cross-sections when the evaporation residues are decaying by electron capture. In this paper,a X-gamma ray coincidence measurement system was established to obtain the absolute fusion cross-section of O-16+W-186 at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The results indicate that this method can efficiently decline the background and the cross-sections extracted from our job are in accord with ones measured by using recoil mass separator.

Abstract:235U and 238U are very important isotopes in the nuclear energy system. Their neutron-induced fission cross sections have been measured intensively and evaluated as standard up to 200 MeV. However, as a matter of fact, the experimental data in the high-energy region are scarce. This work reports the measurement of 235, 238U(n, f) cross sections relative to n-p scattering performed at the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) back-streaming neutron facility (Back-n). Preliminary results of 235, 238U(n, f) cross sections from 10 to 66 MeV are obtained, which are generally following the shape of the IAEA standard. However, significant discrepancies are observed at some given energies, which will be further studied.

Abstract:Determination of the accurate astrophysical S factor of C-12(alpha,gamma) O-16 reaction has been regarded as the holy grail of nuclear astrophysics for decades. In current stellar models, a knowledge of that value to better than 10% is desirable. Due to the practical issues, tremendous experimental and theoretical efforts over nearly 50 years are not able to reach this goal, and the published values contradicted with each other strongly and their uncertainties are two times larger than the required precision. To this end we have developed a reduced R-matrix theory based on the classical R-matrix theory of Lane and Thomas, which treats primary transitions to the ground state and four bound states as the independent reaction channels in the channel spin representation. With the coordination of covariance statistics and error-propagation theory, a global fitting for almost all available experimental data of O-16 system has been multi-iteratively analyzed by our powerful code. A reliable, accurate, and self-consistent astrophysical S factor of C-12(alpha,gamma) O-16 was obtained with a recommended value S-tot(0.3 MeV) = 162.7 +/- 7.3 keV b (4.5%) which could meet the required precision.

Abstract:In this article, we report the 170° backscattering cross sections of 4He from 16O in the energy range of 2.0-9.0 MeV. Our measurements show that the alpha-oxygen scattering remains Rutherford scattering up to Eα=2.35 MeV, and there exist two energy regions, namely 5.55-5.85 MeV and 8.50-8.80 MeV, where the cross sections are enhanced and show a smooth variation. The measured laboratory cross sections are 9.50-9.97 and 35.0-33.0 times greater than the Rutherford values, respectively. In the 8.50-8.80 MeV region, the cross sections at scattering angles of 160°, 165°, 170° and 175° were measured and found to be strongly angle-dependent. A most strong resonance occurred at 7.60 MeV, where the cross section is 200 times of its Rutherford value. This resonance has been used to measure the 16O concentration on a Cu surface, with a sensitivity of 1×1015 oxygen atoms/cm2. Besides, we have studied the backscattering angle dependence of the threshold energy, i. e., the energy at which the elastic cross section begins to deviate from its Rutherford value. The experimental result seems not in agreement with the prediction made from the analytical formula developed by Bozoian et al.

Abstract:In order to look for a proposed cluster structure, of C-16, simulation work made. The simulation of the reaction dynamics give the resolution of the excitation energy on C-16 which was reconstructed prior to breakup. The excitation energy resolution is typically similar to 200 keV at 2 MeV above the two body decay threshold for C-16 -> Be-12+He-4. Moreover, some performances of detectors tested using (241) Am alpha source are also reported.

Abstract:232Th/233U fuel cycle is an alternate candidate for future nuclear energy. Neutron-induced fission cross section of 232Th is one of the important nuclear data if using thorium as the fuel in the future. 232Th(n, f) cross sections from 1 to 300 MeV were measured at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) Back-streaming neutron facility (Back-n) relative to 235U(n, f) and n-p scattering. A fast ionization chamber for fission cross section measurement (FIXM) and a proton recoil telescope (PRT) were used to perform the measurement. The neutron energy in this measurement reaches up to 300 MeV which is supposed to be the highest among the current Experimental Nuclear Reaction Data (EXFOR) library. It stands as the only experimental data in the region of 200-300 MeV in EXFOR as well. The experimental and evaluated data of 232Th(n, f) cross section above 60 MeV are scarce, the measurement data of this work will be valuable references for future evaluation in high energy. For the data below 60 MeV, most of our data are more consistent with ENDF/B-VIII.0, excepting in the region of 1-2 MeV where our data are more in favor of CENDL-3.2.

Measurement of Absolute Single and Double Electron Capture Cross Sections for O6+ Ion Collisions with CO2, CH4, H2, and N2

Abstract:The absolute electron capture cross sections for single and double charge exchanges (CEs) between the highly charged ion O6+ and CO2, CH4, H-2, and N-2, the dominant collision processes in the solar wind, have been measured in the energies from 7 keV q (2.63 keV u(-1)) to 52 keV q (19.5 keV u(-1)). These measurements were carried out in the new experimental instrument setup at Fudan University, and the errors of the cross sections for single and double CEs at the 1 sigma confidence level were about 11% and 16%, respectively. Limited agreement is achieved with single electron capture results calculated by the classical overbarrier model. These cross section data are useful for the simulation of ion-neutral processes in astrophysical environments and to improve the present theoretical model of fundamental atomic processes.

Abstract:Resonance yields, \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray branching, and low-energy limits have been measured for $^{18}\mathrm{O}$(p,\ensuremath{\gamma}) and $^{18}\mathrm{O}$(\ensuremath{\alpha},\ensuremath{\gamma}), for ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{p}}$0.22 MeV and ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$0.78 MeV, using a 4\ensuremath{\pi} array of NaI detectors. The results confirm previous resonance strengths, and set additional constraints on possible low-energy contributions to stellar reaction rates.
A New Study for 16 at the Energies of Nuclear Astrophysics Interest: the Inverse of Key Nucleosynthesis Reaction 12

Abstract:The key reaction 12C(α,γ)16O in nuclear astrophysics is difficult to be performed experimentally at low energy because of the Coulomb barrier. But it is different if we use its inverse reaction 16O(γ,α)12C because the cross-section of 16O(γ,α)12C is almost 100 times larger than the cross-section of 12C(α,γ)16O at the same center of mass energy (Ec.m.) based on our study. In the present work, we study the angular distributions and total cross-sections of 16O(γ,α)12C which are induced by polarized photon using the resonance theory of low energy reaction. The differential cross-sections as well as E1 and E2 transition cross-sections at low nuclear astrophysics energies are also calculated. The feature of the future Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source (SLEGS) facility, a low energy γ-ray beam line with a high photon flux, is presented. The experiments of 16O(γ,α)12C are simulated with a time projection chamber (TPC) and a realistic SLEGS layout. The lowest (Ec.m.), which can be obtained from the simulation, is 0.8 MeV with the 20–30% uncertainty for the one-month beam time of SLEGS. The extracted S factors of 12C(α,γ)16O and their statistical uncertainties from the simulation are compared with the existing data and some theoretical calculations. It is shown that the promising 16O(γ,α)12C experiment at SLEGS can largely reduce the statistical uncertainties of the 12C(α,γ)16O experiment at low energies.

Abstract:This paper have measured the density-normalized effective ionization coefficients (alpha-eta)/N, (alpha and eta are the ionization and attachment coefficients, respectively) and the electron drift velocity Ve in Carbon tetrafluoride (CF4) using a pulsed Townsend technique. The overall density-normalized electric field strength E/N ranged from 50 to 250 Td (1 Td=10-17 Vcm2). From the above plots for (alpha-eta)/N, we have derived the limiting or critical field strength, (E/N)limap128 Td, which is the value of E/N at which (alpha-eta)/N=0.

Abstract:Fluorine is a key element for nucleosynthetic studies since it is extremely sensitive to the physical conditions within stars. The astrophysical site to produce fluorine is suggested to be asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. In these stars the 15N(n, g)16N reaction could affect the abundance of fluorine by competing with 15N(a, g)19F. The 15N(n, g)16N reaction rate depends directly on the neutron spectroscopic factors of the low-lying states in 16N. The angular distributions of the 15N(7Li, 6Li)16N reaction populating the ground state and the first three excited states in 16N are measured using a Q3D magnetic spectrograph and are used to derive the spectroscopic factors of these states based on distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis. The spectroscopic factors of these four states are extracted to be 0.96+-0.09, 0.69+-0.09, 0.84+-0.08 and 0.65+-0.08, respectively. Based on the new spectroscopic factors we derive the 15N(n,g)16N reaction rate. The accuracy and precision of the spectroscopic factors are enhanced due to the first application of high-precision magnetic spectrograph for resolving the closely-spaced 16N levels which can not be achieved in most recent measurement. The present result demonstrates that two levels corresponding to neutron transfers to the 2s1/2 orbit in 16N are not so good single-particle levels although 15N is a closed neutron-shell nucleus. This finding is contrary to the shell model expectation. The present work also provides an independent examination to shed some light on the existing discrepancies in the spectroscopic factors and the 15N(n, g)16N rate.

Abstract:Neutron-induced uranium fission reactions play an essential role in advanced nuclear energy research, basic and applied nuclear science. Based on the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) Back-streaming white neutron source (Back-n), the measurement of the U-236,U-238 fission cross sections relative to U-235 from the threshold to 200 MeV was carried out by using time-of-flight (TOF) method with a multi-cell fast fission ionization chamber in double-bunch mode. The TOF spectra in double-bunch mode were unfolded by using Bayesian method. The fission cross section ratios of U-238/U-235 and U-236/U-235 were obtained. The experimental data of the U-236,U-238/U-235 fission cross section ratios measured in single-bunch mode were re-analyzed in high energy region and the upper limit was extended to 200 MeV for comparison. The experimental results in double-bunch mode are in good agreement with those in single-bunch mode and the main evaluation data within experimental uncertainties. The U-236,U-238(n,f) cross sections were obtained from the measured ratios and the standard U-235(n,f) cross sections and they agree well with the theoretical calculation, previous experiments, main evaluations and IAEA NDS. The experimental results can provide technical support for further experimental researches in double-bunch mode and relevant nuclear data evaluations.

Abstract:Based on the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) - Back-streaming white neutron source (Back-n WNS), the measurement of the U-238/U-235 fission cross section ratio in 1-20 MeV neutron energy region has been carried out by a multi-cell fast fission ionization chamber using the time-of-flight method. The measured resonance peaks of the U-235(n, f) reaction are in good agreement with those of the ENDF/B-8.0 database. The measured six groups of the U-238/U-235 fission cross section ratios in 1-20 MeV neutron energy region agree with those of the ENDF/B-8.0 database in trend, and the average discrepancies between experiment and database are from 1.9% to 2.6%. The relative experimental uncertainties are 2.3%-3.6% (1.4-20 MeV), and the measured data agree with those of database within experimental uncertainties at most energy points. The measured U-238/U-235 fission cross section ratio could provide information and data support in relevant nuclear data evaluation. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The C12(α,γ)O16 reaction, an important component of stellar helium burning, has a key role in nuclear astrophysics. It has significant impact on the evolution and final state of heavy to low mass stars, maximum mass of stellar formed black holes and also shapes the elemental abundances resulting from nucleosynthesis in such stars. Providing a reliable estimate for the energy dependence of this reaction at stellar helium burning temperatures has been a longstanding and important goal. In this work, we study the role of potential new E1 and E2 measurements of the O16(e,e′α)C12 reaction in reducing the overall uncertainty in the astrophysical S factor for the C12(α,γ)O16E1 and E2 ground state capture extrapolated to a stellar energy of 300 keV. A multilevel R -matrix analysis is used to make extrapolations of the SE1 (300 keV) and SE2 (300 keV) factors for the C12(α,γ)O16 reaction from existing ground state capture data. Bayesian analysis is used to quantify the uncertainties in the extrapolations for both the existing data alone and also when possible new experimental data are included. In particular, we consider a new experiment that would make use of a high-intensity low-energy electron beam that impinges on a windowless oxygen gas target as a means to determine the total E1 and E2 ground state cross sections for this reaction. We find that the new data could significantly reduce the S(300) uncertainties. Splitting the new data into high and low energy regions shows that both low and high energy data are effective in reducing the uncertainty. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.110.035809 ©2024 American Physical Society
