Abstract:Alkyl-substituted zirconacyclopentadienes reacted with CO directly at room temperature to give cyclopentenone derivatives as a mixture of cis and trans isomers after hydrolysis. Cyclopentadienones were not obtained. In the case of zirconaindene, both of indanones and indenones were obtained after hydrolysis. Treatment of unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadienes prepared from diphenylacetylene and 4-octyne with CO at room temperature afforded cyclopentenones as a mixture of positional isomers of the double bond.

Abstract:Treatment of zirconacyclopentadienes with CO in the presence of NiCl2(PPh3)(2) afforded cyclopentadienones. Isonitriles reacted with zirconacyclopentadienes in the absence or in the presence of NiCl2(PPh3)(2), and successive treatment of the mixture with CuCl in air gave iminocyclopentadienes.

Abstract:Reactions of diynes RCC-X-CCR with zirconocene ethylene complex Cp(2)Zr(CH2=CH2) were investigated. When X was C6H4 or C4H2S, bridged zirconacyclopentenes were selectively formed. They were easily converted into bridged cyclopentenone derivatives. In the case of (CH2)(n) groups as X, the reaction products were strongly dependent on the R group.

Abstract:1,2,3-Trisubstituted cyclopentadienes and tetrahydroindene derivatives were prepared by a one-step reaction from zirconacyclopentene complexes, which are easily prepared from alkynes and EtMgBr (or ethylene) and Cp2ZrCl2. Reaction of zirconacyclopentenes with phthaloyl chlorides afforded intramolecular Michael addition reaction products. The structure of one of the products was determined by X-ray study.

Abstract:Reaction of zirconacyclopentadienes with one equiv or two equiv of aryl iodides in the presence of CuCl and DMPU afforded mono-arylated diene derivatives in high yields with high selectivities. Treatment of zirconacyclopentadienes with one equiv of 2-thienyl iodide similarly gave thienyldienes in the presence of CuCl and DMPU, whereas the reaction with two equiv of 2-thienyl iodide produced thienyl iododiene derivatives in high yields. Zirconacyclopentadienes reacted with two equiv of alkynyl iodides to give iododienynes in good yields in the presence of CuCl. This is in sharp contrast to the reaction with two equiv of alkynyl iodides in the presence of CuCl and DMPU which provides dienediynes.

Abstract:Formation of cyclic compounds from zirconacycles has been performed by a combination of Michael addition and coupling with an alkenyl iodide moiety in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl. The reaction of 3-iodopropenoates with various zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl afforded penta- and hexasubstituted cyclopentadienes. The reaction of 3-iodocycloenones with zirconacyclopentadienes, zirconacyclopentenes, or zirconacyclopentanes gave spirocyclic compounds in good yields.

Abstract:This account describes recent development in carbon-carbon bond cleavage reactions and selective transformation of 5-membered zirconacycles, including zirconacyclopentanes, zironacyclopentenes, and zirconacyclopentadienes. These zirconacycles can be prepared by coupling of unsaturated compounds such as alkenes and/or alkynes, but the zirconacycles also undergo beta,beta'-C-C bond cleavage, which has been further applied to organic transformation reactions. Combination of the beta,beta'-C-C bond cleavage and the C-C bond formation on zirconocene provided a highly selective and novel transformation. Vinylzirconation of alkynes, regioselective allylzirconation of alkynes, and coupling of alkynes with nitriles or ketones were achieved by this method. Zirconacyclopentadienes prepared symmetrically or unsymmetrically were converted into naphthalene, diene, and benzene derivatives. Preparation of benzene derivatives from three different alkynes was performed by combination of C-C bond cleavage and C-C bond formation on zirconocene in one-pot in high yield with excellent selectivity.

Abstract:Direct transformation of five-membered zirconacycles to carbocyclic compounds is of great synthetic interest. The reaction of zirconacycles with electrophiles containing at least two reactive functional groups or an oxidant affords various carbocycles through cross coupling, addition, and/or oxidative coupling reactions. In this paper, we present our recent results on the zirconacycle-mediated formation of carbocycles, including: (1) 1,1-cycloaddition of oxalyl dichloride with zirconacycles; (2) benzoquinone-promoted coupling of zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of CuCl; (3) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadienes to quinones; (4) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadiene with 2-bromoacrylate, 2-bromoacrylaldehyde and 3-bromofuran-2,5-dione in the presence of CuCl; (5) one-pot coupling of two alkynes and an alkene to form cyclohexene derivatives via zirconacyclopentadienes; and (6) dianionic cycloaddition of decatetraenes with esters or acyl chlorides to form nine-membered carbocycles.

Abstract:Bis(alkynyl)silanes react with low valent zirconocene species to afford zircon cyclobutene intermediates. These in situ generated reactive organometallic intermediates can react with alkynes, ketones, aldehydes, and isocyanates by means of a novel skeletal rearrangement. When a zirconacy-clobutene intermediate was treated with an alkyne, an alpha-alkynylsilyl zirco-nacyclopentadiene was formed. Addition of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and CuCl resulted in one-pot formation of an alkynylsilyl-benzene derivative from three different alkynes. At a higher temperature, the alpha-alkynyl-silylzirconacyclopentadiene was transformed by means of an intramolecular skeletal rearrangement to a zirconacy-clohexadiene-silacyclobutene fused-ring compound, which reacted with DMAD in the presence of CuCl affording the same alkynylsilyl-benzene derivative. When treated with a ketone, an aldehdye, or an isocyanate, the zirconocyclobutene intermediate also underwent the above-mentioned skeletal rearrangement, generating zirconocene-mediated cross-coupling products.

Abstract:The reactivity of lutetacyclopentadiene towards N,N-diphenylcarbodiimide (DPC) was systematically investigated to efficiently construct three types of new N-containing fused cyclic complexes. The outcome of these reactions significantly depended on the the metal center, the concentration of LiCl, the number of equivalents of DPC, and the solvent. Thus, two unexpected reaction modes of amidinate were discovered for the first time, which were ascribed to an unusual (1) coordination mode of amidinate driven by a rigid seven-membered ring. These results are in striking contrast with the previously well-investigated zirconacyclopentadiene, which reacts with DPC to give azazirconacyclopentene and alkyne through , CC bond cleavage. The difference in reactivity between lutetacyclopentadiene and zirconacyclopentadiene can be attributed to the highly ionic character of the LuC(sp(2)) bonds. DFT calculations agreed well with the experimental results.
Ancillary Ligand and Ketone Substituent Effects on the Rate of Ketone Insertion into Zr−C Bonds of Zirconocene−1-Aza-1,3-diene Complexes

Abstract:Zirconocene-1-aza-1,3-diene complexes, [Me2Si(C5H4)(2)]Zr[N(Ar)CH=CHCH(Ph)] (Ar = Ph, 2a; Ar = p-MeOC6H4, 2b) and Cp2Zr[N(Ar)CH=CHCH(Ph)] (Ar = Ph, 3a; Ar = P-MeOC6H4, 3b), have been synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. X-ray crystal structure determinations of compounds 2a and 3a,b reveal folded five-membered-ring moieties for the zirconacycles. DFT calculations and variable-temperature NMR experiments for complex 2a establish a rapid ring-flipping process at room temperature, with the conformation hearing a pseudoequatorial Ph group more stable by 5.6 kcal/mol. Kinetic studies on ketone insertion into these zirconocene complexes show second-order reactions, and the insertion is more favorable in the presence of a [Me,Si] ansa bridge, a less electron-rich substituent on the nitrogen, and a more basic ketone. One of the insertion products, namely CP2Zr[N(Ph)CH=CHCH(Ph)CPh2O] (5a), has also been characterized by X-ray crystallography.
