Abstract:This article describes four methodologies for the formation of five - membered carbocycles from zirconacycles. (1) Insertion reaction of CO or RNC to zirconacycles; (2) Reaction of zirconacycles with propynoate-combination of double Michael addition; (3) Reaction of zirconacycles with iodopropenoates or iodocycloenones-combination of coupling reaction and Michael addition; (4) Reaction of zirconacycles with acyl chlorides-combination of nucleophilic substitution and nuleophilic addition. Each of them has shown numeral representatives.
Ring-Opening Polymerization Behavior of<i>ansa</i>- and Spirocyclic<i>ansa</i>-Zirconocene Complexes

Abstract:Attempts to develop a ring-opening polymerization (ROP) approach to polymeric zirconocene complexes are reported. A new silicon-bridged [1][1] zirconocenophane, (SiMe2)(2)(eta (5)-C5H3)(2)Zr(NEt2)(2) (3a), was synthesized by reaction of Zr(NEt2)(4) with (C5H4)(2)(SiMe2)(2) (4) Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a highly tilted structure with an angle of 73.1(4)degrees, a significant increase over the untethered compound (eta (5)-MeC5H4)(2)ZrCl2 (2), which possesses a tilt angle of 54.2 degrees. This and the related compounds (SiMe2)(eta (5)-C5H4)(2)MCl2 (1a, M = Ti; Ib, M = Zr) and (SiMe2)(2)(eta (5)-C5H3)(2)ZrCl2 (3b) were tested for transition-metal catalyzed ROP behavior in the presence of Pt(0) catalysts but were found to be inactive. The novel spirocyclic silacyclobutane-bridged monomer (CH2)(3)Si(eta (5)-C5H4)(2)ZrCl2 (7b) was prepared via a "fly trap" amine elimination reaction between cyclotrimethylenedicyclopentadienylsilane (8) and Zr(NMe2)(4); this initially yielded (CH2)(3)Si(eta (5)-C5H4)(2)Zr(NMe2)(2) (7a), which was converted to 7b by reaction with a slight excess of Me3SiCl. 7a and 7b were characterized by Si-29, C-13, and H-1 NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both showed moderate tilt angles (61.7(2)degrees and 59.69(7)degrees, respectively) as well as highly strained silacyclobutane rings with C-Si-C bond angles of 79.7(2)degrees and 80.64(10)4 respectively. Transition-metal-catalyzed ROP of 7b led to the formation of the polycarbosilane [(CH2)(3)Si(eta (5)-C5H4)(2)ZrCl2](n) (10). Both the soluble and insoluble fractions of 10 were characterized by CP-MAS Si-29 and C-13 NMR, and the soluble, oligomeric fraction was further characterized by solution Si-29, C-13,and H-1 NMR. Complexes 7a, 7b, and polyzirconocene 10 were found to exhibit moderate activity as ethylene polymerization catalysts.

Abstract:Formation of cyclic compounds from zirconacycles has been performed by a combination of Michael addition and coupling with an alkenyl iodide moiety in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl. The reaction of 3-iodopropenoates with various zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl afforded penta- and hexasubstituted cyclopentadienes. The reaction of 3-iodocycloenones with zirconacyclopentadienes, zirconacyclopentenes, or zirconacyclopentanes gave spirocyclic compounds in good yields.

Abstract:Direct transformation of five-membered zirconacycles to carbocyclic compounds is of great synthetic interest. The reaction of zirconacycles with electrophiles containing at least two reactive functional groups or an oxidant affords various carbocycles through cross coupling, addition, and/or oxidative coupling reactions. In this paper, we present our recent results on the zirconacycle-mediated formation of carbocycles, including: (1) 1,1-cycloaddition of oxalyl dichloride with zirconacycles; (2) benzoquinone-promoted coupling of zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of CuCl; (3) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadienes to quinones; (4) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadiene with 2-bromoacrylate, 2-bromoacrylaldehyde and 3-bromofuran-2,5-dione in the presence of CuCl; (5) one-pot coupling of two alkynes and an alkene to form cyclohexene derivatives via zirconacyclopentadienes; and (6) dianionic cycloaddition of decatetraenes with esters or acyl chlorides to form nine-membered carbocycles.

Abstract:This account describes recent development in carbon-carbon bond cleavage reactions and selective transformation of 5-membered zirconacycles, including zirconacyclopentanes, zironacyclopentenes, and zirconacyclopentadienes. These zirconacycles can be prepared by coupling of unsaturated compounds such as alkenes and/or alkynes, but the zirconacycles also undergo beta,beta'-C-C bond cleavage, which has been further applied to organic transformation reactions. Combination of the beta,beta'-C-C bond cleavage and the C-C bond formation on zirconocene provided a highly selective and novel transformation. Vinylzirconation of alkynes, regioselective allylzirconation of alkynes, and coupling of alkynes with nitriles or ketones were achieved by this method. Zirconacyclopentadienes prepared symmetrically or unsymmetrically were converted into naphthalene, diene, and benzene derivatives. Preparation of benzene derivatives from three different alkynes was performed by combination of C-C bond cleavage and C-C bond formation on zirconocene in one-pot in high yield with excellent selectivity.

Abstract:Reactions of zirconacyclopentadienes with diethyl ketomalonate gave alpha-pyrans in excellent yields in the presence of BiCl3. In the absence of BiCl3, zirconacyclopentadienes did not react with diethyl ketomalonate. Tetraphenylzirconacyclopentadiene reacted with diethyl ketomalonate in the presence of BiCl3 to give a ring-opening product, dienolic ether, in 53% yield. The structures of the alpha-pyran prepared from diethyldiphenylzirconacyclopentadiene and the ring-opening product were determined by X-ray analysis. When oximinosulfonate was added to tetraethylzirconacyclopentadiene in THF at -78 degrees C, 3,4,5,6-tetraethylpyridine-2-carbonitrile was obtained in 95% yield within 10 min. The structure of the product was confirmed by X-ray analysis. When tetraethylzirconacyclopentadiene was treated with azodicarboxylate in the presence of 2 equiv of CuCl at -78 degrees C, 1,2-dialkoxycarbonyl-3,4,5,6-tetraethyl-1,2-dihydropyridazine derivatives were obtained. The structure of one of dihydropyridazine was also confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Abstract:Reactions of diynes RCC-X-CCR with zirconocene ethylene complex Cp(2)Zr(CH2=CH2) were investigated. When X was C6H4 or C4H2S, bridged zirconacyclopentenes were selectively formed. They were easily converted into bridged cyclopentenone derivatives. In the case of (CH2)(n) groups as X, the reaction products were strongly dependent on the R group.

Abstract:Treatment of zirconacyclopentadienes with CO in the presence of NiCl2(PPh3)(2) afforded cyclopentadienones. Abstract:The reaction of the seven-membered azazirconacycloallene 2 with Ph2CHCN was carried out to yield a zirconocene complex with three fused rings and a keteniminate ligand. Further reactivity toward propargyl bromide or propionyl chloride shows that the keteniminate ligand can be replaced by halogen atoms (Br or Cl). In addition, the reaction of the strained four-membered zirconacycle 1 with Ph2CHCN gives zirconocenes possessing vinyl-imine and keteniminate species.

Abstract:Alkyl-substituted zirconacyclopentadienes reacted with CO directly at room temperature to give cyclopentenone derivatives as a mixture of cis and trans isomers after hydrolysis. Cyclopentadienones were not obtained. In the case of zirconaindene, both of indanones and indenones were obtained after hydrolysis. Treatment of unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadienes prepared from diphenylacetylene and 4-octyne with CO at room temperature afforded cyclopentenones as a mixture of positional isomers of the double bond.

Abstract:Mukaiyama-Aldol and Prins reactions have been identified as highly efficient methods in C-C bond formation since they were discovered several decades ago. Since both reactions gave the same common intermediate, oxocarbonium, we intend to combine the two reactions into a domino process, which means the formation of multiple C-C bonds and stereogenic centers in one pot without isolation of any intermediates. We envisage that the domino reactions involving the Mukaiyama-Aldol reaction of silyl enol ether and acetal treated with Lewis acid (TiBr(4)) will produce an oxonium intermediate which upon trapping by an alkene functionality in an intramolecular Prins cyclization will generate the cyclopentyl ring system.

Abstract:1,2,3-Trisubstituted cyclopentadienes and tetrahydroindene derivatives were prepared by a one-step reaction from zirconacyclopentene complexes, which are easily prepared from alkynes and EtMgBr (or ethylene) and Cp2ZrCl2. Reaction of zirconacyclopentenes with phthaloyl chlorides afforded intramolecular Michael addition reaction products. The structure of one of the products was determined by X-ray study.

Abstract:Zirconocene complexes carrying sterically bulky tri-substituted cyclopentadienyl ligands, (η5-4-R-1,2-Ph2C5H2)2ZrCl2 [R=phenyl (3), cyclohexyl (4)], were synthesized by the reaction of ZrCl4 with lithio salt of 1,2,4-triphenylcyclopentadiene (1) or 4-cyclohexyl-1,2-diphenylcyclopentadiene (2), respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structure analysis reveals that both complexes crystallize in C2-symmetric conformation in solid state. When activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), complexes 3 and 4 polymerize ethylene with moderate activities to produce ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylenes with high melting transition temperatures at low Al/Zr ratios. Under ambient conditions, both systems of 3–MAO and 4–MAO show relatively high activities in propylene oligomerization. The molecular weight of the polypropylene produced from the 3–MAO system is lower than that from the 4–MAO system. In comparison with 4, complex 3 is more active in both ethylene and propylene polymerization.
