Abstract:Methods toward the dimerization and homocoupling of terminal alkynes have been established that employ Co complexes along with tBuOK under different atmosphere. A variety of Z-1,3-enynes were furnished with a high Z:E (up to 93:7) ratio in moderate to very good yields under inert atmosphere. Alternatively, the Glaser homocoupling reaction of terminal alkynes was also accomplished with a Co catalyst, successfully affording various 1,3-diynes in excellent yields (up to 93%) under oxygen.

Abstract:Formation of cyclic compounds from zirconacycles has been performed by a combination of Michael addition and coupling with an alkenyl iodide moiety in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl. The reaction of 3-iodopropenoates with various zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl afforded penta- and hexasubstituted cyclopentadienes. The reaction of 3-iodocycloenones with zirconacyclopentadienes, zirconacyclopentenes, or zirconacyclopentanes gave spirocyclic compounds in good yields.

Abstract:Molybdenum complexes with the general formula Mo(NR)(CHR')(OR '')(Cl)(MeCN) (R = t-Bu or 1-adamantyl; OR '' = a 2,6-terphenoxide) recently have been found to be highly active catalysts for cross-metathesis reactions between Z-internal olefins and Z-1,2-dichloroethylene or Z-(CF3)CH=CH(CF3). In this paper we report methods of synthesizing new potential catalysts with the general formula M(NR)(CHR')(OR '')(Cl)(L) in which M = Mo or W, NR = N-2,6-diisopropylphenyl or NC6F5, and L is a phosphine, a pyridine, or a nitrile. We also test and compare all catalysts in the cross-metathesis of Z-1,2-dichloroethylene and cyclooctene. Our investigations indicate that tungsten complexes are inactive in the test reaction either because the donor is bound too strongly or because acetonitrile inserts into a W=C bond. The acetonitrile or pivalonitrile Mo(NR)(CHR')(OR '')(Cl)(L) complexes are found to be especially reactive because the 14e Mo(NR)(CHR')(OR '')Cl core is accessible through dissociation of the nitrile to a significant extent. Pivalonitrile can be removed (>95%) from Mo(NAr)(CHCMe2Ph)(OHMT)(Cl)(t-BuCN) (Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl; OHMT = 2,6-dimesitylphenoxide) to give 14e Mo(NAr)(CHCMe2Ph)(OHMT)Cl in solution as a mixture of syn and anti (60:40 at 0.015 M) nitrile-free isomers, but these 14e complexes have not yet been isolated in pure form. The syn isomer of Mo(NAr)(CHCMe2Ph)(OHMT)Cl binds pivalonitrile most strongly. Other Mo(NR)(CHR')(OR '')(Cl)(L) complexes can be activated through addition of B(C6F5)(3). High stereoselectivities (>98% Z,Z) of CICH=CH(CH2)(6)CH=CHCl are not restricted to tert-butylimido or adamantylimido complexes; 96.2% Z selectivity is observed with boron-activated Mo(NC6F5)(CHR')(OHIPT)(Cl)(PPhMe2). So far no Mo=CHCl complexes, which are required intermediates in the test reaction, have been observed in NMR studies at room temperature.

Abstract:Reactions of diynes RCC-X-CCR with zirconocene ethylene complex Cp(2)Zr(CH2=CH2) were investigated. When X was C6H4 or C4H2S, bridged zirconacyclopentenes were selectively formed. They were easily converted into bridged cyclopentenone derivatives. In the case of (CH2)(n) groups as X, the reaction products were strongly dependent on the R group.

Abstract:Bis(alkynyl)silanes react with low valent zirconocene species to afford zircon cyclobutene intermediates. These in situ generated reactive organometallic intermediates can react with alkynes, ketones, aldehydes, and isocyanates by means of a novel skeletal rearrangement. When a zirconacy-clobutene intermediate was treated with an alkyne, an alpha-alkynylsilyl zirco-nacyclopentadiene was formed. Addition of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and CuCl resulted in one-pot formation of an alkynylsilyl-benzene derivative from three different alkynes. At a higher temperature, the alpha-alkynyl-silylzirconacyclopentadiene was transformed by means of an intramolecular skeletal rearrangement to a zirconacy-clohexadiene-silacyclobutene fused-ring compound, which reacted with DMAD in the presence of CuCl affording the same alkynylsilyl-benzene derivative. When treated with a ketone, an aldehdye, or an isocyanate, the zirconocyclobutene intermediate also underwent the above-mentioned skeletal rearrangement, generating zirconocene-mediated cross-coupling products.

Abstract:Zirconocene complexes carrying sterically bulky tri-substituted cyclopentadienyl ligands, (η5-4-R-1,2-Ph2C5H2)2ZrCl2 [R=phenyl (3), cyclohexyl (4)], were synthesized by the reaction of ZrCl4 with lithio salt of 1,2,4-triphenylcyclopentadiene (1) or 4-cyclohexyl-1,2-diphenylcyclopentadiene (2), respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structure analysis reveals that both complexes crystallize in C2-symmetric conformation in solid state. When activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), complexes 3 and 4 polymerize ethylene with moderate activities to produce ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylenes with high melting transition temperatures at low Al/Zr ratios. Under ambient conditions, both systems of 3–MAO and 4–MAO show relatively high activities in propylene oligomerization. The molecular weight of the polypropylene produced from the 3–MAO system is lower than that from the 4–MAO system. In comparison with 4, complex 3 is more active in both ethylene and propylene polymerization.

Abstract:Treatment of Cp2ZrCl2 with 2 equiv of EtMgBr in THF, followed by addition of an internal alkyne and subsequent treatment with COI2 gave α,β-disubstituted cyclopentenone in good to high yields. When a conjugated enyne was used as an alkyne component, α-alkenyl cyclopentenone was selectively formed in 80–89% yields. In the case of 4,6-decadiyne, α-alkynylcyclopentenone was formed in 88% yield. Bridged alkynes such as 1,4-dihexynylbenzene afforded α,α′-bridged cyclopentenone compounds in good yields.

Abstract:MO(CO)(6) performed good catalytic activity of the cyclotrimerization of terminal-or internal-alkynes as well as the alkynes with either electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups to form trisubstituted or hexasubstituted benzene derivatives. The effect of solvent and amount of catalyst on the yield of benzene derivatives were investigated, indicating that the reaction proceeded smoothly in toluene with 15% MO(CO)(6).

Abstract:1,2,3-Trisubstituted cyclopentadienes and tetrahydroindene derivatives were prepared by a one-step reaction from zirconacyclopentene complexes, which are easily prepared from alkynes and EtMgBr (or ethylene) and Cp2ZrCl2. Reaction of zirconacyclopentenes with phthaloyl chlorides afforded intramolecular Michael addition reaction products. The structure of one of the products was determined by X-ray study.

Abstract:Reaction of [(2-phosphino)ethenyl]zirconocene chloride (1) with CpM(CO)(3)Cl (M = Mo, W) in THF yielded the [(3-phosphino)propenoyl]dicarbonyl(cyclopentadienyl)metals {CpM(CO)(2)[(CO)CR=CRPPh2]} (2). When the reaction between [(2-phosphino)ethenyl]zirconocene chloride (1) and CpMo(CO)(3)Cl was carried out in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pd(CH3CN)(2)Cl-2, [(3-phosphino)propenoyl]dicarbonyl(cyclopentadienyl)molybdenum, {CpMo(CO)(2)[(CO)CR=CRPPh2]}, was exclusively observed. When [(2-phosphino)ethenyl]zirconocene chloride (1) and MeCpW(CO)(3)Cl were reacted in the presence of a catalytic amount of CuCl, [(3-phosphino)propenoyl]dicarbonyl(methylcyclopentadienyl)tungsten, {MeCpW(CO)(2)[(CO)CR=CRPPh2]}, was formed. Their structures are determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:Zirconacyclopentenes, which are easily prepared from alkynes and EtMgBr (or ethylene) and Cp2ZrCl2, reacted with oxalyl chloride in the presence of catalytic amount of CuCl to give cyclopentenones in high yields. The reaction was performed conveniently in one pot from alkynes, EtMgBr, oxalyl chloride, and Cp2ZrCl2.

Abstract:Treatment of bis(phenylethynyl)silane (PhC=C)(2)SiR2 (R = Me (2a), Et (2b) or Ph (2c)) with Cp2ZrEt2 (1) (Cp = cyclopentadienyl) and H2O/CuCl in this order afforded (1E,3E)-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene (3) in 56-88% yields after hydrolysis. On the other hand, hydrolysis of the reaction mixture of 2a-h with Cp2ZrEt2 gave silacyclobutene derivatives 4a-h in 61-87% yields. Zirconium-containing intermediate 7 was obtained as crystals suitable for X-ray analysis when t-BuC5H4 was used as the ligands of a zirconocene derivative. Structure of 7 showed that the intermediate contained the zirconacyclobutene-silacyclobutene fused ring system. Reaction of silacyclobutene 4a with CuCl selectively opened the silacyclobutene ring. The further treatment of the reaction mixture with PhI in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pd(PPh3)(4) gave 1,3,4-triphenyl-1-silyl-1,3-butadiene compound 16. Zirconacyclopentadienes with an alkynylsilyl group at the alpha-position afforded zirconacyclohexadiene derivatives 19 in 82-98% yields. When t-BuC5H4 was used as the ligands instead of two Cp, the structure was determined by X-ray analysis. The structure clearly showed that 19 had the zirconacyclohexadiene-silacyclobutene fused ring system.

Abstract:Direct transformation of five-membered zirconacycles to carbocyclic compounds is of great synthetic interest. The reaction of zirconacycles with electrophiles containing at least two reactive functional groups or an oxidant affords various carbocycles through cross coupling, addition, and/or oxidative coupling reactions. In this paper, we present our recent results on the zirconacycle-mediated formation of carbocycles, including: (1) 1,1-cycloaddition of oxalyl dichloride with zirconacycles; (2) benzoquinone-promoted coupling of zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of CuCl; (3) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadienes to quinones; (4) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadiene with 2-bromoacrylate, 2-bromoacrylaldehyde and 3-bromofuran-2,5-dione in the presence of CuCl; (5) one-pot coupling of two alkynes and an alkene to form cyclohexene derivatives via zirconacyclopentadienes; and (6) dianionic cycloaddition of decatetraenes with esters or acyl chlorides to form nine-membered carbocycles.

Abstract:New unbridged zirconocene complexes, bis(1,2-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride (3) and bis(4-methy-1,2-diphenylcyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride (4) have been synthesized in high yield by reaction of ZrCl4 with the lithium salt of 1,2-diphenylcyclopentadiene (1) or 4-methyl-1,2-diphenylcyclopentadiene (2), respectively. X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals both complexes are in racemic-like conformation with near C2 symmetry in solid state. When activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), 3 and 4 exhibit moderate catalytic activities for ethylene polymerization at relatively low Al:Zr ratios, producing high molecular weight (>106) polyethylenes with high melting transition temperatures. Atactic propylene oligomers with average molecular weight of ∼103 g mol−1 were produced by both 3 and 4 at relatively high catalytic activities upon activation with MAO.

Abstract:A new dialkylzirconocene type of complex, (12-ph(2)-4-MeCp)(2)ZrMe2 (2), was synthesized by reaction of (12-Ph-2-4-MeCp)(2)ZrCl2 (1) and with 2 equivalent of methyl lithium at -78 T. Complex 2 was charcterized by elemental analysis, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR. The structure of complex 2 was determined by single crystal X-ray structural analysis. Upon activation with Al(Bu-i)(3)/Ph3C+B(C6F5)(4)(-), complex 2 showed a high catalytic activity for the ethylene polymerization reaction at lower n(Al)/n(Zr) ratios and high molecular weight polyethylene samples with high melting transition temperatures were produced. The polyethylene samples were characterized by molecular weight determination, DSC and XRD analysis.
