Abstract:Direct transformation of five-membered zirconacycles to carbocyclic compounds is of great synthetic interest. The reaction of zirconacycles with electrophiles containing at least two reactive functional groups or an oxidant affords various carbocycles through cross coupling, addition, and/or oxidative coupling reactions. In this paper, we present our recent results on the zirconacycle-mediated formation of carbocycles, including: (1) 1,1-cycloaddition of oxalyl dichloride with zirconacycles; (2) benzoquinone-promoted coupling of zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of CuCl; (3) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadienes to quinones; (4) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadiene with 2-bromoacrylate, 2-bromoacrylaldehyde and 3-bromofuran-2,5-dione in the presence of CuCl; (5) one-pot coupling of two alkynes and an alkene to form cyclohexene derivatives via zirconacyclopentadienes; and (6) dianionic cycloaddition of decatetraenes with esters or acyl chlorides to form nine-membered carbocycles.

Abstract:This article describes four methodologies for the formation of five - membered carbocycles from zirconacycles. (1) Insertion reaction of CO or RNC to zirconacycles; (2) Reaction of zirconacycles with propynoate-combination of double Michael addition; (3) Reaction of zirconacycles with iodopropenoates or iodocycloenones-combination of coupling reaction and Michael addition; (4) Reaction of zirconacycles with acyl chlorides-combination of nucleophilic substitution and nuleophilic addition. Each of them has shown numeral representatives.

Abstract:Transition-metal alkylidenes have exhibited wide applications in organometallic chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry, however, cyclic Schrock-carbene-like bis-alkylidenes of group 4 metals with a four-electron donor from an alkylidene have not been reported. Herein, the synthesis and characterization of five-membered cyclic bis-alkylidenes of titanium (4 a,b) and zirconium (5 a,b) are reported, as the first well-defined group 4 metallacyclopentatrienes, by two-electron reduction of their corresponding titana- and zirconacyclopentadienes. DFT analyses of 4 a show a four-electron donor (sigma-donation and pi-donation) from an alkylidene carbon to the metal center. The reaction of 4 a with N,N '-diisopropylcarbodiimide (DIC) leads to the [2+2]-cycloaddition product 6. Compound 4 a reacted with CO, affording the oxycyclopentadienyl titanium complex 7. These reactivities demonstrate the multiple metal-carbon bond character. The reactions of 4 a or 5 a with cyclooctatetraene (COT) or azobenzene afforded sandwich titanium complex 8 or diphenylhydrazine-coordinated zirconacyclopentadiene 9, respectively, which exhibit two-electron reductive ability.

Abstract:This account describes recent development in carbon-carbon bond cleavage reactions and selective transformation of 5-membered zirconacycles, including zirconacyclopentanes, zironacyclopentenes, and zirconacyclopentadienes. These zirconacycles can be prepared by coupling of unsaturated compounds such as alkenes and/or alkynes, but the zirconacycles also undergo beta,beta'-C-C bond cleavage, which has been further applied to organic transformation reactions. Combination of the beta,beta'-C-C bond cleavage and the C-C bond formation on zirconocene provided a highly selective and novel transformation. Vinylzirconation of alkynes, regioselective allylzirconation of alkynes, and coupling of alkynes with nitriles or ketones were achieved by this method. Zirconacyclopentadienes prepared symmetrically or unsymmetrically were converted into naphthalene, diene, and benzene derivatives. Preparation of benzene derivatives from three different alkynes was performed by combination of C-C bond cleavage and C-C bond formation on zirconocene in one-pot in high yield with excellent selectivity.

Abstract:Herein, we describe the utilization of isomeric pyridyl-substituted ligands featuring different coordination vectors to rationally design and construct a series of discrete organometallic assemblies with specific space conformations. In the case of tetranuclear macrocycles constructed from the ligand 3-bpb, different conformations of these assemblies with C-2v and C-2h point symmetry were revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes were further characterized by X-ray crystallography, H-1 NMR, DOSY NMR, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed coupling-cyclization reaction of alkenyldiazoacetates with o-alkenyl arylisocyanides has been developed. In this reaction, the highly reactive alkenylketenimine intermediates generated by coupling reaction of alkenyldiazoacetates with o-alkenyl arylisocyanides undergo intramolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition and provide a novel, highly efficient method for the one-step synthesis of carbazoles by formation of three new bonds and two rings from readily available acyclic starting materials.

Abstract:A kinetically controllable strategy toward the construction of otherwise challenging nine-membered carbocycles is reported. This Pd-catalyzed decarboxylative procedure utilizes vinyl methylene cyclic carbonates as the C5-dipole and allylidenemalononitriles as C4-building blocks. The protocol features user-friendly operations with controllable regioselectivity and generates CO2 as the sole byproduct. Abstract:A series of binuclear complexes [{Cp*Ir(OOCCH(2)COO)}(2)(pyrazine)] (1b), [{Cp*Ir(OOCCH(2)COO)}(2)(bpy)] (2b; bpy=4,4'-bipyridine), [{Cp*Ir(OOCCH(2)COO)}(2)(bpe)] (3b; bpe=trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene) and tetranuclear metallamacrocycles [{(Cp*Ir)(2)(OOC-C=C-COO)(pyrazine)}(2)] (1c), [{(Cp*Ir)(2)(OOC-C=C-COO)(bpy)}(2)] (2c), [{(Cp*Ir)(2)(OOC-C=C-COO)(bpe)}(2)] (3c), and [{(Cp*Ir)(2)[OOC(H(3)C(6))-N=N-(C(6)H(3))COO](pyrazine)}(2)] (1d), [{(Cp*Ir)(2)[OOC(H(3)C(6))-N=N-(C(6)H(3))COO](bpy)}(2)] (2d), [{(Cp*Ir)(2)[OOC(H(3)C(6))-N=N-(C(6)H(3))COO](bpe)}(2)] (3d) were formed by reactions of 1a-3a {[(Cp*Ir)(2)(pyrazine)Cl(2)] (1a), [(Cp*Ir)(2)(bpy)Cl(2)] (2a), and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(bpe)Cl(2)] (3a)} with malonic acid, fumaric acid, or H(2)ADB (azobenzene-4,4'-chcarboxylic acid), respectively, under mild conditions. The metallamacrocycles were directly self-assembled by activation of C-H bonds from dicarboxylic acids. Interestingly, after exposure to UV/Vis light, 3c was converted to [2+2] cycloaddition complex 4. The molecular structures of 2b, 1c, 1d, and 4 were characterized by single-crystal x-ray crystallography. Nanosized tubular channels, which may play important roles for their stability, were also observed in 1c, 1d, and 4. All complexes were well characterized by (1)H NMR and IR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analysis.

Abstract:A novel class of cyclometalated macrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c), p-ClC(6)H(4) (4d), Me (4e)]; [(Cp*Rh)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a'), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b'), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c')] and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-C=N-C(6)H(4)-N=C-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (5a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (5b)] was stepwise constructed through the double-site C-H activation of aromatic bis-imine substrates. The structures of binuclear complexes and tetranuclear macrocycles were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Isomers were found both in binuclear species and macrocyclic complexes. Flexible substrates led to the existence of isomers for binuclear species, yet gave no isomers after macrocyclic constructions; rigid ones, in contrast, led to isomers only for macrocyclic species. The isomers of tetranuclear macrocycles were thermodynamically stable to reversible transformation on a scale of days. Robust bonding and a certain degree of rigidity were invoked to explain the existence of isomers. This is the first example, to our knowledge, in which coordinated macrocycles containing half-sandwich Cp*M (M = Ir, Rh) fragments have been constructed, without a dynamic reversible process.

Abstract:The structurally intriguing tetracyclic core of complex harziane diterpenoid was constructed in 14 steps from commercially available 3-ethoxycyclohex-2-en-1-one. The key steps were a Mn/Cu-mediated oxidative 1,3-dicarbonyl radical cascade cyclization reaction, which diastereoselectively formed the core of dimethylbicyclo[3.2.1]octane structure, and a Au-catalyzed diastereoselective formal [2 + 2] cycloaddition for construction of the harziane diterpenoid tetracyclic framework. The developed method paves the way for achieving total synthesis of this type of complex natural product.

Abstract:Formation of cyclic compounds from zirconacycles has been performed by a combination of Michael addition and coupling with an alkenyl iodide moiety in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl. The reaction of 3-iodopropenoates with various zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl afforded penta- and hexasubstituted cyclopentadienes. The reaction of 3-iodocycloenones with zirconacyclopentadienes, zirconacyclopentenes, or zirconacyclopentanes gave spirocyclic compounds in good yields.

Abstract:A new series of tetranuclear half-sandwich macrocycles were successfully obtained via cleaving aromatic C-H bonds under mild conditions. In this context, the complexes 1-5 formed via aromatic C H bond activation were fully characterized by IR, EA, H-1 NMR, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Thus, distorted-rectangle-shaped backbones were obviously indicated and directed to assemble nanochannel architectures via H-bonds. hydrophobic interactions, and CH center dot center dot center dot pi stacking in complexes 1-5.
