Abstract:Herein, we describe the utilization of isomeric pyridyl-substituted ligands featuring different coordination vectors to rationally design and construct a series of discrete organometallic assemblies with specific space conformations. In the case of tetranuclear macrocycles constructed from the ligand 3-bpb, different conformations of these assemblies with C-2v and C-2h point symmetry were revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes were further characterized by X-ray crystallography, H-1 NMR, DOSY NMR, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Different types of multinuclear half-sandwich rhodium macrocycles and cages were designed and synthesized by using two similar multifunctional hydroxamate ligands (pyrazine-2-hydroxamic acid (NaHL1) and 4,4-bipyridine-2-hydroxamic acid (KHL2)) featuring one monodentate site and two pairs of chelating sites. The Rh-III-Pd-II heterometallic macrocycles were constructed by using the semi-open palladium(II) source [Pd(en)Cl-2] with two free acceptor sites. However, only one kind of macrocycle was found when the shorter ligand L-1 was used, while in for the larger ligand, various spectroscopic techniques demonstrated the coexistence of hexanuclear and octanuclear macrocycles in solution and the proportions of both components depended on concentration and temperature. The palladium salt Pd(NO3)(2), as a source of naked Pd2+, was introduced to assemble the cuboid-shaped cage composed of two types of metal ions and three types of organic ligands. In addition, two silver(I)-containing mixed-metal complexes bridged by pyrazine were obtained, in which two forms of decanuclear complex with C-2v and C-2h point symmetry cocrystallizedone is a polymeric structure and the other is a discrete cage. However, the third form, with D-2 point symmetry, was found in the larger cage.
Rational Design of Half-Sandwich Iridium Metallamacrocycles Assembled by C–H Activation

Abstract:Both tetranuclear metallamacrocycles {(Cp*Ir)(2)-[m-(OOC-C6H2-COO)](Pyrazine)}(2) (2a) and {(CP*Ir)(2){m-[OOC-(5-NH2-C6H)-COO)]}(Pyrazine)}(2). (3a) were formed by reactions of {[(Cp*Ir)(2)(pyrazine)Cl-2] (1a) with 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (m-H2BDC) and 5-amino-1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (NH2-m-BDC) in the presence of TEA (triethylamine) under mild conditions, respectively. In order to investigate the effect of N-donor ligands in the construction of metallamacrocycles, the binuclear complexes [(Cp*Ir)(2)(bpy)-Cl-2] and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(bpe)Cl-2] were used as precursors to react with m-H2BDC and NH2-m-BDC under the same conditions to result in tetranuclear metallamacrocycles {(Cp*Ir)(2)[m-(CCC-C6H2-COO)](bpy)}(2) (2b), {(CP*Ir)(2)[m-(OOC-C6H2-COO)] (bpe)}(2) (2c), {(CP*Ir)(2){m-[OOC-(5-NH2-C6H)-COO)]}-(bpy)}(2) (3b), and {(Cp*Ir)(2){m-[OOC-(5-NH2-C6H)-COO)]}(bPe)}(2) (3c). Furthermore, in the development of building similar metallamacrocycles by dicarboxylic acid through C-H activation, 2-amino- 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (NH2-BDC) was employed to react with N-donor bridging binuclear complexes, resulting in complexes {(Cp*Ir)(2)[OOC-(2-NH2-C6H)-COO)]-(pyrazine)}(2) (4a), {(CP*Ir)(2)[OOC-(2-NH2-C6H)-COO)(bPY)}(2) (4b), and {(Cp*Ir)(2)[OOC-(2-NH2-C6H)-COO)] (bPe)}(2) (4c). The molecular structures of 2a and 3a were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. All complexes were well characterized by NMR, IR, and elemental analysis.

Abstract:Half-sandwich rhodium and iridium complexes with carboxylic acid ligands were combined with pyrazine, 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) or trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)-ethylene (bpe) to give a series of tetranuclear macrocycles. The metallamacrocycles [(Cp*Rh)4()2(pyrazine)2][OTf]2 (), [(Cp*Rh)4()2(bpy)2][OTf]2 (), [(Cp*Rh)4()2(bpe)2][OTf]4 () and [(Cp*Ir)4()2 (pyrazine)2] () ( = 3-(2-pyridyl)acrylic acid, = 1,4-di(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene) were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, IR and single-crystal X-ray analyses. Due to the different structures of the carboxylate ligands, the complexes , and were synthesized through double-site C-H activation, and complexes were obtained by one-site C-H activation.

Abstract:An N-heterocycle (pyrazine) utilized as a precursor was employed to construct multinuclear metallamacrocycle 1 though C-H activation and metal-metal bond formation under mild conditions. This iridamacrocycle was fully characterized by (1)H NMR, IR, and elemental analysis. In order to further confirm its structure, X-ray analysis was carried out, proving the hexanuclear iridium macrocyclic backbone of the complex.

Abstract:A novel class of cyclometalated macrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c), p-ClC(6)H(4) (4d), Me (4e)]; [(Cp*Rh)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a'), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b'), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c')] and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-C=N-C(6)H(4)-N=C-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (5a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (5b)] was stepwise constructed through the double-site C-H activation of aromatic bis-imine substrates. The structures of binuclear complexes and tetranuclear macrocycles were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Isomers were found both in binuclear species and macrocyclic complexes. Flexible substrates led to the existence of isomers for binuclear species, yet gave no isomers after macrocyclic constructions; rigid ones, in contrast, led to isomers only for macrocyclic species. The isomers of tetranuclear macrocycles were thermodynamically stable to reversible transformation on a scale of days. Robust bonding and a certain degree of rigidity were invoked to explain the existence of isomers. This is the first example, to our knowledge, in which coordinated macrocycles containing half-sandwich Cp*M (M = Ir, Rh) fragments have been constructed, without a dynamic reversible process.

Abstract:A series of hexanuclear rectangular macrocycles were designed and synthesized by utilizing multifunctional pyrazine-derived (pyrazine-2,3-diamine (H4L1)) and quinoxaline-derived ligands (2,3-dihydroxy-quinoxaline (H2L2)) featuring two monodentate sites and one pair of chelating sites. X-ray crystallography in combination with 1H NMR spectroscopy elucidated that both half-sandwich iridium diimine and dihydroxy moieties are located on either side of the rectangular macrocycles, making them centrosymmetric. Thereby, the prepared diimine-functionalised complexes were found to have unsaturated metal sites on account of their strongly bound Ir-N-C-C-N arrangement. However, all the iridium atoms in the rectangular macrocycles containing dihydroxy groups were found to adopt an 18-electron coordination configuration, indicating that the O,O'-bonded iridium centers had bound additional ligands, such as Cl-, MeOH, MeCN, etc. Notably, a rare rectangular macrocycle containing a single coordinatively unsaturated metal site was achieved when the ligands H2L12- and L22- were introduced simultaneously.

Abstract:The reactions of half-sandwich rhodium and iridium complexes [Cp'MCl(mu-Cl)](2) with bidentate ligands (L) such as pyrazine, 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), and trans-4,4'-azopyridine gave the corresponding binuclear complexes [{Cp'MCl2}(2)(L)] (M = Ir, Cp' = Cp* = eta(5)-C5Me5, L = pyrazine (3a), bpy (3b); M = Rh, Cp' = Cp' = eta(5)-1,3'Bu2C5H3, L = bpy (3c), 4,4'-azopyridine (3d)), which can be converted into tetranuclear complexes [{Cp'M-2(2)(mu-Cl)(2)}(2)(L)(2)](4+) (M = Ir, Cp' = Cp*, L = bpy (4a and 4b); M = Rh, Cp' = Cp', L = bpy (4c, 4e), L = 4,4'-azopyridine (4d)) on treatment with Ag(OTf) or AgBF4 (OTf = CF3SO3). Treatment of Cl-bridged complexes 4c and 4e with terephthalate (L') resulted in replacing the Cl bridges to produce macrocyclic complexes [(Cp'M)(4){(L)(L')}(2)](4+) (M = Rh, Cp' = Cpl, L = bpy, L' = terephthalate (5)). The molecular structure of the cation in macrocyclic complex 5 contains two different types of ligand "edges", and the dimensions of the cavity are 10.8 x 11.2 angstrom.

In this context, the complexes 1-5 formed via aromatic C H bond activation were fully characterized by IR, EA, H-1 NMR, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Thus, distorted-rectangle-shaped backbones were obviously indicated and directed to assemble nanochannel architectures via H-bonds. hydrophobic interactions, and CH center dot center dot center dot pi stacking in complexes 1-5.

Abstract:A series of half-sandwich rhodium and iridium complexes containing carboxylate ligands were synthesized and characterized. Reactions between [Cp∗MCl2]2 (M = Ir or Rh) and 1,3,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (L1) gave binuclear complexes 1 and 2 under different conditions. The half-sandwich iridium and rhodium metallamacrocycles complexes 3–5 were constructed in a stepwise manner by the addition of carboxylate ligands (sodium acetate or the conjugate bases of pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid or 3-(2-pyridyl)acrylic acid) to the solution of the binuclear precursors prepared from the reactions of [Cp∗MCl2]2 (M = Rh or Ir) with linear N,N′-donor ligands (4,4′-bipyridine or trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene), respectively. The structures of binuclear complexes and tetranuclear macrocycles were confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:A series of organometallic macrocycles have been constructed by two-step reactions of [Cp*M(mu-Cl)Cl](2) (M = Ir, Rh), firstly with AgOTf to abstract chloride ions and then with simple pyridyl-substituted ligands pyridyldipyrromethene (HL1), pyridin-4-yl (1H-pyrrol-2-yl) methanone (HL2) and pyridine-4-carbohydrazide (HL3)-resulting in the formation of the tetranuclear 32-membered metallacycles [(Cp*Ir)(L-1)](4)(OTf)(4) (2a) and [(Cp*Rh)(L-1)](4)(OTf)(4) (2b), and the 28-membered metallacycles [(Cp*Ir)(L-2)](4)(OTf)(4) (3a), [(Cp*Rh) (L-2)](4)(OTf)(4) (3b), [(Cp*Ir)(L-3)](4)(OTf)(4) (4a) and [(Cp*Rh)(L-3)](4)(OTf)(4) (4b). Four target complexes were characterised by single crystal X-ray analyses, revealing that these metallacycles, constructed from half-sandwich metal corners and pyridyl-substituted linkers, form large ring structures. The observed variation in the metallacyclic geometries was explained on the basis of the structural flexibility of the corner fragments, subtle changes in coordination geometries, and changes in the orientation of the coordinate vectors in the given ligands, as well as different dihedral angles between the two binding fragments in the nonplanar ligands.

Abstract:A series of half-sandwich iridium-based complexes bearing 1,4-benzenebis (N,N'-dicyclohexylamidine) (H2L1) or 4,4'-bisphenylbis(N,N'-dicyclohexylamidine) (H2L2) has been synthesized and characterized. Treatment of [Cp*IrCl2](2) (Cp* = eta(5)-pentamethyl-cyclo pentadienyl) with deprotonated H2L1 or H2L2 at low temperature resulted in formation of binuclear complexes [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-1) and [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-2). They were chosen as precursors to construct macrocycles and cages. Tetranuclear metallamacrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-1)(2) (pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) and [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-2)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) were assembled by the reaction of complex [Cp*IrCl](2) (L-1) or [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-2) with pyrazine after the removal of chloride from the iridium centers with silver salt AgOTf (OTf = O2SCF3). When 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tpt) is used instead of pyrazine under the same conditions, hexanuclear metallacages [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-1)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) and [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-2)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) were formed. Single-crystal X-ray analysis indicated that the cation of complex [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-1)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) is a rectangular structure, while the cation of complex [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-2)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) is seriously distorted, nearly to a tetrahedral state. Moreover, complexes [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-1)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) and [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-2)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) are prism-like cages with large cavity size, which can be prepared in very high yield in the absence of templates. Surprisingly, solutions of multinuclear complexes are very sensitive to carbon monoxide, in which the frameworks were destroyed, giving the binuclear complexes [(Cp*Ir)(2)(CO)(2)(L-1)][OTf](2) and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(CO)(2)(L-2)][OTf](2).

Abstract:The controlled synthesis of organometallic supramolecular macrocycles cages remains interesting and challenging work in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Here, two tetranuclear rectangular macrocycles and an octuclear cage were designed and synthesized utilizing a rigid and functionalized pillar linker, 2,6-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-1,7-dihydrobenzo [1,2-d:4,5-d′]diimidazole (BBI4PY) based on three half-sandwich rhodium building blocks bearing different sizes. X-ray crystallography in combination with 1H NMR spectroscopy elucidated that the two building blocks with shorter spacers only result in rectangular macrocycles. However, the building block of bulkier size to avoid the π-π stacking interactions between two ligands BBI4PY led to the formation of an octuclear cage complex. The latter cage contains two types of metal ions, namely Rh3+ and Cu2+, showing significant characteristics of heterogeneous metal-assembling compounds. In addition, the cage accommodates two free isopropyl ether solvent molecules, thus displaying host–guest behavior.

The metallamacrocycles were directly self-assembled by activation of C-H bonds from dicarboxylic acids. Interestingly, after exposure to UV/Vis light, 3c was converted to [2+2] cycloaddition complex 4. The molecular structures of 2b, 1c, 1d, and 4 were characterized by single-crystal x-ray crystallography. Nanosized tubular channels, which may play important roles for their stability, were also observed in 1c, 1d, and 4. All complexes were well characterized by (1)H NMR and IR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analysis.

Abstract:π-Conjugated chiral nanorings with intriguing electronic structures and chiroptical properties have attracted considerable interests in synthetic chemistry and materials science. We present the design principles to access new chiral macrocycles (1 and 2) that are essentially built on the key components of main-group electron-donating carbazolyl moieties or the π-expanded aza[7]helicenes. Both macrocycles show the unique molecular conformations with a (quasi) figure-of-eight topology as a result of the conjugation patterns of 2,2',7,7'-spirobifluorenyl in 1 and triarylamine-coupled aza[7]helicene-based building blocks in 2. This electronic nature of redox-active, carbazole-rich backbones enabled these macrocycles to be readily oxidized chemically and electrochemically, leading to the sequential production of a series of positively charged polycationic open-shell cyclophanes. Their redox-dependent electronic states of the resulting multispin polyradicals have been characterized by VT-ESR, UV−vis−NIR absorption and spectroelectrochemical measurements. The singlet (ΔES-T = ‒1.29 kcal mol‒1) and a nearly degenerate singlet-triplet ground state (ΔES-T(calcd) = ‒0.15 kcal mol‒1 and ΔES-T(exp) = 0.01 kcal mol‒1) were proved for diradical dications 12+2• and 22+2•, respectively. Our work provides an experimental proof for the construction of electron-donating new chiral nanorings, and more importantly for highly charged polyradicals with potential applications in chirospintronics and organic conductors.

Abstract:Metallacyclic complexes [(C-Mes-C-meth)Pd(L)](2)(OTf)(4) (C-Mes-C-meth = 1,1'-dimesityl-3,3'-methylenediimidazolin-2,2'-diylidene; L = 4,4'-dithiodipyridine (L-1) (5), 1,2-bis(4-pyridylthio)ethane (L-2) (6), 1,3-bis(4-pyridylthio)propane (L-3) (7)) were obtained by the self-assembly of [(C-Mes-C-meth)-Pd(CH3CN)(2)](OTf)(2) with flexible pyridine-based ligands L-1-L-3 in high yields. The reaction of [(C-Mes-C-meth)Pd(CH3CN)(2)](OTf)(2) with a rigid pyrazine ligand led to the formation of mononuclear [(C-Mes-C-meth)Pd(pyrazine)(2)](OTf)(2) (4), which can be ascribed to the effect of the steric bulk of the substituent. Complexes 4-6 have been well characterized by elemental analyses, H-1 NMR and IR spectra, and single-crystal molecular structure analysis.

Abstract:A series of [4+2] hexanuclear heterometallic macrocycles, {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)(OTf)(2)}center dot(OTf)(6) (1a), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(SbF6)(8) (1a'), {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(OTf)(8) (1b), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)](2)(OTf)(2)}center dot(OTf)6 (2a), {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(OTf)(8) (2b), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Cu(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(PF6)(4)(OTf)(4) (3a), and {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Cu(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(PF6)(4)(OTf)(4) (3b), have been constructed by the self-assembly of half-sandwich organometallic units [(Cp*M-2(2)(mu-DHNA)Cl-2] (M = Ir and Rh; Cp* = eta(5)-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; DHNA = 6,11-dihydroxy-5,12-naphthacenedione) and the metalloligands [M(pyterpy)(2)](2+) (M = Zn, Ni, and Cu; pyterpy = 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine). Confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis, complexes 1a-3b display hexanuclear heterometallic macrocycles with two box-like cavities. Interestingly, on the basis of the different combinations of metals, complexes 1a and 2a have the ability to encapsulate two OTf guest anions in the molecular cavities, but differ from that of the other complexes in which all counteranions exist outside the molecular backbones. In addition, the reaction of [Cp*MCl2](2) (M = Ir and Rh) and [Ni(pyterpy)(2)](NO3)(2) leads to the formation of [2+1] trinuclear heterometallic linear molecules {Cp*2Ir2[Ni(pyterpy)(2)]Cl-4}(NO3)(2) (4a) and {Cp*Rh-2(2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)]Cl-4}(NO3)(2) (4b), which could be used as a kind of precursor.

Abstract:The study of through‐space electronic coupling in π‐conjugated systems remains an underexplored area. In this work, we present the facile synthesis of two isomeric macrocycles (1 and 2) bridged by [2,2]paracyclophane (pCp) and based on thiophene. The structures of these macrocycles have been confirmed through X‐ray crystallographic analysis. Our investigation centers on their electronic properties across various redox states, with a specific focus on potential through‐space electronic coupling and global aromaticity. Experimental measurements, including UV‐vis‐NIR electronic absorption, NMR, ESR spectra, and X‐ray diffraction, combined with theoretical calculations, reveal that both the neutral compounds and their tetracations exhibit a closed‐shell ground state. However, their dications manifest as diradical dications with a subtle magnetic exchange interaction. Consequently, the through‐space electronic coupling facilitated by the pCp unit in their respective ground states appears to be weak.
