Abstract:A series of half-sandwich iridium-based complexes bearing 1,4-benzenebis (N,N'-dicyclohexylamidine) (H2L1) or 4,4'-bisphenylbis(N,N'-dicyclohexylamidine) (H2L2) has been synthesized and characterized. Treatment of [Cp*IrCl2](2) (Cp* = eta(5)-pentamethyl-cyclo pentadienyl) with deprotonated H2L1 or H2L2 at low temperature resulted in formation of binuclear complexes [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-1) and [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-2). They were chosen as precursors to construct macrocycles and cages. Tetranuclear metallamacrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-1)(2) (pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) and [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-2)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) were assembled by the reaction of complex [Cp*IrCl](2) (L-1) or [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-2) with pyrazine after the removal of chloride from the iridium centers with silver salt AgOTf (OTf = O2SCF3). When 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tpt) is used instead of pyrazine under the same conditions, hexanuclear metallacages [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-1)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) and [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-2)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) were formed. Single-crystal X-ray analysis indicated that the cation of complex [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-1)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) is a rectangular structure, while the cation of complex [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-2)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) is seriously distorted, nearly to a tetrahedral state. Moreover, complexes [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-1)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) and [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-2)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) are prism-like cages with large cavity size, which can be prepared in very high yield in the absence of templates. Surprisingly, solutions of multinuclear complexes are very sensitive to carbon monoxide, in which the frameworks were destroyed, giving the binuclear complexes [(Cp*Ir)(2)(CO)(2)(L-1)][OTf](2) and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(CO)(2)(L-2)][OTf](2).

Abstract:A synthetic route has been developed for a series of 3d homobimetallic complexes of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu using three different pyridyldiimine and pyridyldialdimine macrocyclic ligands with ring sizes of 18, 20, and 22 atoms. Crystallographic analyses indicate that while the distances between the metals can be modulated by the size of the macrocycle pocket, the flexibility in the alkyl linkers used to construct the macrocycles enables the ligand to adjust the orientation of the PD(A)I fragments in response to the geometry of the [M2(μ-Cl)2]2+ core, particularly with respect to Jahn-Teller distortions. Analyses by UV-vis spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry revealed deviations in the properties [M2(μ-Cl)2]2+-containing complexes bound by standard mononucleating ligands, highlighting the ability of macrocycles to use ring size to control the magnetic interactions of pseudo-octahedral, high-spin metal centers.

Abstract:A series of [4+2] hexanuclear heterometallic macrocycles, {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)(OTf)(2)}center dot(OTf)(6) (1a), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(SbF6)(8) (1a'), {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(OTf)(8) (1b), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)](2)(OTf)(2)}center dot(OTf)6 (2a), {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(OTf)(8) (2b), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Cu(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(PF6)(4)(OTf)(4) (3a), and {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Cu(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(PF6)(4)(OTf)(4) (3b), have been constructed by the self-assembly of half-sandwich organometallic units [(Cp*M-2(2)(mu-DHNA)Cl-2] (M = Ir and Rh; Cp* = eta(5)-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; DHNA = 6,11-dihydroxy-5,12-naphthacenedione) and the metalloligands [M(pyterpy)(2)](2+) (M = Zn, Ni, and Cu; pyterpy = 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine). Confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis, complexes 1a-3b display hexanuclear heterometallic macrocycles with two box-like cavities. Interestingly, on the basis of the different combinations of metals, complexes 1a and 2a have the ability to encapsulate two OTf guest anions in the molecular cavities, but differ from that of the other complexes in which all counteranions exist outside the molecular backbones. In addition, the reaction of [Cp*MCl2](2) (M = Ir and Rh) and [Ni(pyterpy)(2)](NO3)(2) leads to the formation of [2+1] trinuclear heterometallic linear molecules {Cp*2Ir2[Ni(pyterpy)(2)]Cl-4}(NO3)(2) (4a) and {Cp*Rh-2(2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)]Cl-4}(NO3)(2) (4b), which could be used as a kind of precursor.

Abstract:Different types of multinuclear half-sandwich rhodium macrocycles and cages were designed and synthesized by using two similar multifunctional hydroxamate ligands (pyrazine-2-hydroxamic acid (NaHL1) and 4,4-bipyridine-2-hydroxamic acid (KHL2)) featuring one monodentate site and two pairs of chelating sites. The Rh-III-Pd-II heterometallic macrocycles were constructed by using the semi-open palladium(II) source [Pd(en)Cl-2] with two free acceptor sites. However, only one kind of macrocycle was found when the shorter ligand L-1 was used, while in for the larger ligand, various spectroscopic techniques demonstrated the coexistence of hexanuclear and octanuclear macrocycles in solution and the proportions of both components depended on concentration and temperature. The palladium salt Pd(NO3)(2), as a source of naked Pd2+, was introduced to assemble the cuboid-shaped cage composed of two types of metal ions and three types of organic ligands. In addition, two silver(I)-containing mixed-metal complexes bridged by pyrazine were obtained, in which two forms of decanuclear complex with C-2v and C-2h point symmetry cocrystallizedone is a polymeric structure and the other is a discrete cage. However, the third form, with D-2 point symmetry, was found in the larger cage.

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:Herein, we describe the utilization of isomeric pyridyl-substituted ligands featuring different coordination vectors to rationally design and construct a series of discrete organometallic assemblies with specific space conformations. In the case of tetranuclear macrocycles constructed from the ligand 3-bpb, different conformations of these assemblies with C-2v and C-2h point symmetry were revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes were further characterized by X-ray crystallography, H-1 NMR, DOSY NMR, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:A series of organometallic macrocycles have been constructed by two-step reactions of [Cp*M(mu-Cl)Cl](2) (M = Ir, Rh), firstly with AgOTf to abstract chloride ions and then with simple pyridyl-substituted ligands pyridyldipyrromethene (HL1), pyridin-4-yl (1H-pyrrol-2-yl) methanone (HL2) and pyridine-4-carbohydrazide (HL3)-resulting in the formation of the tetranuclear 32-membered metallacycles [(Cp*Ir)(L-1)](4)(OTf)(4) (2a) and [(Cp*Rh)(L-1)](4)(OTf)(4) (2b), and the 28-membered metallacycles [(Cp*Ir)(L-2)](4)(OTf)(4) (3a), [(Cp*Rh) (L-2)](4)(OTf)(4) (3b), [(Cp*Ir)(L-3)](4)(OTf)(4) (4a) and [(Cp*Rh)(L-3)](4)(OTf)(4) (4b). Four target complexes were characterised by single crystal X-ray analyses, revealing that these metallacycles, constructed from half-sandwich metal corners and pyridyl-substituted linkers, form large ring structures. The observed variation in the metallacyclic geometries was explained on the basis of the structural flexibility of the corner fragments, subtle changes in coordination geometries, and changes in the orientation of the coordinate vectors in the given ligands, as well as different dihedral angles between the two binding fragments in the nonplanar ligands.

Abstract:A novel class of cyclometalated macrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c), p-ClC(6)H(4) (4d), Me (4e)]; [(Cp*Rh)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a'), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b'), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c')] and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-C=N-C(6)H(4)-N=C-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (5a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (5b)] was stepwise constructed through the double-site C-H activation of aromatic bis-imine substrates. The structures of binuclear complexes and tetranuclear macrocycles were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Isomers were found both in binuclear species and macrocyclic complexes. Flexible substrates led to the existence of isomers for binuclear species, yet gave no isomers after macrocyclic constructions; rigid ones, in contrast, led to isomers only for macrocyclic species. The isomers of tetranuclear macrocycles were thermodynamically stable to reversible transformation on a scale of days. Robust bonding and a certain degree of rigidity were invoked to explain the existence of isomers. This is the first example, to our knowledge, in which coordinated macrocycles containing half-sandwich Cp*M (M = Ir, Rh) fragments have been constructed, without a dynamic reversible process.
Calix[4]pyrrole Schiff base macrocycles. Novel binucleating ligands for mu-oxo iron complexes

Abstract:New bimetallic mu-oxo diferric complexes of several previously reported calix[4]pyrrole Schiff base macrocycles are described. The synthesis of a new member of this class of macrocycles is also reported; it was prepared via an acid-catalyzed condensation between 1,9-bisformyl-5,5-dipropyldipyrromethane and o-phenylenediamine. Reactions of the free base macrocycles or their bis-HCl salts with Fe(II) mesitylene, followed by air oxidation, gave the binuclear mu-oxo bis-Fe(III) compounds 6-10 in moderate yield. X-ray crystallography data reveal two different coordination environments for the Fe-O-Fe subunit in 6-10 that it is suggested can be controlled by altering the reaction conditions. Structural properties of these metalated pyrrolic macrocycles are also compared to those of mu-oxo diferric porphyrins and mu-oxo diferric texaphyrin. Complexes 6-10 exhibit two distinct types of M-N bonds that are similar in length to the bonds observed in metallotexaphyrin complexes. However, the electronics of the present systems are very different from those of texaphyrins and porphyrins in that no delocalized bonding patterns are observed within the ligands as a whole.

Abstract:4-Amino-3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole (4-abpt) as bent bridging ligand has been utilized to construct half-sandwich tetranuclear organometallic complexes, namely [Cp*4M4(C2O4)2(4-abpt)2](OTf)4 (M = Rh(1); Ir(2)) and [Cp*4M4(bibzIm)2(4-abpt)2](OTf)4 (M = Rh(3); Ir(4)). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural analysis combined with 1H NMR spectra reveal that complexes 1–4 show rectangular macrocycles, in which half-sandwich binuclear units are interlinked by 4-abpt ligands that have relatively flexible angle changes. For macrocycles 1–3, they all feature an anti-arrangement of 4-abpt ligands; However, 4-abpt ligands adopt a syn-arrangement in macrocycle 4.

Abstract:By employing dipalladium corners [(bpy)(2)Pd-2(NO3)(2)](NO3)(2) or [(phen)(2)Pd-2(NO3)(2)](NO3)(2) (where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) to bridge ferrocene-based dipyrazole ligand (L-1) and m-phenylene-based dipyrazole ligands (L2-3) in aqueous solution, a series of positively-charged [M4L2](4+) metallomacrocycles were obtained. Their structures were characterized by H-1 NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for 1.4NO(3) ({[(bpy)Pd](4)L-2(1)}(NO3)(4)) and 4.4NO(3) ({[(phen)Pd](4)L-2(2)}(NO3)(4)). In their single crystal structures, NO3- anions are located at the dipalladium corners by C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. Importantly, the anion-sensing properties of ferrocene functionalized [Pd4Fe2] hetero-metallomacrocycle 1 were investigated in acetonitrile by SWV, CV and NMR analysis, showing promise for Br- sensing.

Abstract:By employing functional diimine ligands coordinated dipalladium(II,II) or diplatinum(II,II) clips as corners and the coplanar 4,4'-bipyrazolate dianion (L(2-)) ligand as linker, a series of bipyrazolate-bridged metallo-macrocycles, namely, [M8L4](NO3)8 (M = Pd(dmbpy), 1; Pd(bpy), 2; Pt(bpy), 3a; Pd(phen), 4; Pt(phen), 5; Pd(15-crown-5-phen), 6; Pd(18-crown-6-phen), 8; Pd(benzo-24-crown-8-phen), 10a; Pt(15-crown-5-phen), 7a, Pt(18-crown-6-phen), 9a; Pt(benzo-24-crown-8-phen), 11a) and [M6L3](NO3)6 (M = Pt(bpy), 3b; Pt(15-crown-5-phen), 7b; Pt(18-crown-6-phen), 9b; Pd(benzo-24-crown-8-phen), 10b; Pt(benzo-24-crown-8-phen), 11b), have been synthesized through a directed self-assembly approach that involves spontaneous deprotonation of the 1H-bipyrazolyl ligands in aqueous solution. All these compounds have a crown-shaped cavity that can serve as host to solvent molecules and anions. The structures are characterized by elemental analysis, (1)H and (13)C NMR, ESI-MS, and in the cases of 1a (the BF4(-) salt of 1), 2a (the BF4(-) salt of 2), and 3b by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Photophysical properties for complexes 1 and 2 are discussed.

Abstract:A new series of tetranuclear half-sandwich macrocycles were successfully obtained via cleaving aromatic C-H bonds under mild conditions. In this context, the complexes 1-5 formed via aromatic C H bond activation were fully characterized by IR, EA, H-1 NMR, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Abstract:A series of nanosized cavity-containing bipyrazolate-bridged metallomacrocycles with dimetal centers, namely, {[(bpy)M]8L4}(NO3)8 [L=3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-bipyrazolyl, Pd, Pt; 1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene), Pd; and 1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbiphenyl, Pd], {[(phen)M]8L4}(NO3)8 [L=3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-bipyrazolyl, Pd, Pt; 1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene, Pd; and 1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbiphenyl, Pd], {[(bpy)Pd]6L3}(NO3)6 [L=1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene,], {[(phen)Pd]6L3}(NO3)6 [L=1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene,], {[(bpy)Pd]4L2}(NO3)4 [L=1,3-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene, and 1,2-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene,], and {[(phen)Pd]4L2}(NO3)4 [L=1,3-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene, and 1,2-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene,] (where bpy=2,2'-bipyridine and phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized through a directed self-assembly approach that involves spontaneous deprotonation of the 1H-bipyrazolyl ligands in aqueous solution. These complexes, with weak Pd(II)...Pd(II) or Pt(II)...Pt(II) interactions, have been characterized by elemental analysis, 1H and 13C NMR, cold-spray ionization or electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, UV-visible spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy. Complexes and have also been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:The 16-electron half-sandwich iridium complexes [Cp*Ir{E2C2(B10H10)}] [E = S (1a), Se (1b)] (Cp* = eta(5)-C5Me5) [Cp*Ir[E2C2(B10H10)] = eta(5)-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-[1,2-dicarbacloso-dodecaborane(12)-dichalcogenolato]iridium] reacted with Co-2(CO)(8) in toluene solution to afford the trinuclear clusters [Cp*Ir{E2C2(B10H10)}]{Co-2(CO)(5)} [E = S (2a), Se (2b)] and mononuclear complexes [Cp*Ir(CO){E2C2(B10H10)}] [E = S (3a), Se (3b)] as byproducts. Compounds 2a and 2b contain closed IrCo2 triangle geometry with one Co-Co and two Ir-Co bonds. The dinuclear IrFe complexes [Cp*Ir{E2C2(B10H10)}]{Fe(CO)(3)} [E = S (4a), Se (4b)] were obtained from the reactions of 1a and 1b with Fe(CO)5 in the presence of Me3NO. The molecular structures of 2a, 2b, and 4b have been determined by X-ray crystallography.
New cyanido-bridged iron(II) spin crossover coordination polymers with unusual ladder-like topology: an alternative to Hofmann clathrates

Abstract:Two new cyanido-bridged {FeIIMII} double chains were obtained by reacting cyanido anions [M(CN)4]2- with complex cations [FeII(tptz)]2+ (preformed in situ by mixing hydrated tetrafluoroborate salt of iron(II) and tptz ligand, tptz = 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine) having the general formula [FeII(tptz)MII(CN)4]·2H2O·CH3CN, where M = Pd (1) or Pt (2). Additionally, two molecular complexes formulated as [FeII(tptz)2][MII(CN)4]·4.25H2O, where M = Pd (3) or Pt (4), were subsequently obtained from the same reaction, as secondary products. Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the P-1 triclinic space group. Their structure consists of a double-chain with a ladder-like topology, in which cyanido-based [M(CN)4]2- metalloligands coordinate, through three CN- ligands, three [FeII(tptz)]2+ complex cations. Compounds 3 and 4 are also isostructural and crystallize in the P-1 triclinic space group, the X-ray structural data showing the formation of [FeII(tptz)2]2+ and [MII(CN)4]2- ionic units interconnected through H-bonds and ··· stacking supramolecular interactions. The static DC magnetic measurements recorded in the temperatures range 2-300 K showed that 1 and 2 exhibit incomplete spin transition on cooling, which is also confirmed by single crystal XRD analysis and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Compounds 3 and 4 are diamagnetic, most likely, due to the encapsulation of Fe(II) in a tight pocket formed by two tptz ligands that preserve the low-spin state in the temperature range 2-400 K.

Abstract:The controlled synthesis of organometallic supramolecular macrocycles cages remains interesting and challenging work in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Here, two tetranuclear rectangular macrocycles and an octuclear cage were designed and synthesized utilizing a rigid and functionalized pillar linker, 2,6-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-1,7-dihydrobenzo [1,2-d:4,5-d′]diimidazole (BBI4PY) based on three half-sandwich rhodium building blocks bearing different sizes. X-ray crystallography in combination with 1H NMR spectroscopy elucidated that the two building blocks with shorter spacers only result in rectangular macrocycles. However, the building block of bulkier size to avoid the π-π stacking interactions between two ligands BBI4PY led to the formation of an octuclear cage complex. The latter cage contains two types of metal ions, namely Rh3+ and Cu2+, showing significant characteristics of heterogeneous metal-assembling compounds. In addition, the cage accommodates two free isopropyl ether solvent molecules, thus displaying host–guest behavior.
