Abstract:Cu(I)-mediated reactions of zirconacyclopentadienes with fumaronitrile afforded the corresponding dicyanocyclohexadiene and benzonitrile derivatives in good yields. These products were selectively prepared by controlling the reaction temperature. Furthermore, the reaction was applicable for monocyano-substituted pentacene derivatives.

Abstract:Formation of cyclic compounds from zirconacycles has been performed by a combination of Michael addition and coupling with an alkenyl iodide moiety in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl. The reaction of 3-iodopropenoates with various zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl afforded penta- and hexasubstituted cyclopentadienes. The reaction of 3-iodocycloenones with zirconacyclopentadienes, zirconacyclopentenes, or zirconacyclopentanes gave spirocyclic compounds in good yields.

Abstract:1,2,3-Trisubstituted cyclopentadienes and tetrahydroindene derivatives were prepared by a one-step reaction from zirconacyclopentene complexes, which are easily prepared from alkynes and EtMgBr (or ethylene) and Cp2ZrCl2. Reaction of zirconacyclopentenes with phthaloyl chlorides afforded intramolecular Michael addition reaction products. The structure of one of the products was determined by X-ray study.

Abstract:Reactions of diynes RCC-X-CCR with zirconocene ethylene complex Cp(2)Zr(CH2=CH2) were investigated. When X was C6H4 or C4H2S, bridged zirconacyclopentenes were selectively formed. They were easily converted into bridged cyclopentenone derivatives. In the case of (CH2)(n) groups as X, the reaction products were strongly dependent on the R group.

Abstract:Reaction of zirconacyclopentadienes with one equiv or two equiv of aryl iodides in the presence of CuCl and DMPU afforded mono-arylated diene derivatives in high yields with high selectivities. Treatment of zirconacyclopentadienes with one equiv of 2-thienyl iodide similarly gave thienyldienes in the presence of CuCl and DMPU, whereas the reaction with two equiv of 2-thienyl iodide produced thienyl iododiene derivatives in high yields. Zirconacyclopentadienes reacted with two equiv of alkynyl iodides to give iododienynes in good yields in the presence of CuCl. This is in sharp contrast to the reaction with two equiv of alkynyl iodides in the presence of CuCl and DMPU which provides dienediynes.

Abstract:Reactions of zirconacyclopentadienes with diethyl ketomalonate gave alpha-pyrans in excellent yields in the presence of BiCl3. In the absence of BiCl3, zirconacyclopentadienes did not react with diethyl ketomalonate. Tetraphenylzirconacyclopentadiene reacted with diethyl ketomalonate in the presence of BiCl3 to give a ring-opening product, dienolic ether, in 53% yield. The structures of the alpha-pyran prepared from diethyldiphenylzirconacyclopentadiene and the ring-opening product were determined by X-ray analysis. When oximinosulfonate was added to tetraethylzirconacyclopentadiene in THF at -78 degrees C, 3,4,5,6-tetraethylpyridine-2-carbonitrile was obtained in 95% yield within 10 min. The structure of the product was confirmed by X-ray analysis. When tetraethylzirconacyclopentadiene was treated with azodicarboxylate in the presence of 2 equiv of CuCl at -78 degrees C, 1,2-dialkoxycarbonyl-3,4,5,6-tetraethyl-1,2-dihydropyridazine derivatives were obtained. The structure of one of dihydropyridazine was also confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Abstract:We report a phosphine-catalyzed activation of electron-deficient vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) to generate an ambident C-5 synthon that is poised to undergo consecutive reactions. The utility of the activation is demonstrated in a phosphine-catalyzed rearrangement of vinylcyclopropylketones to cycloheptenones in good yields with a broad substrate scope. Mechanistic investigations support a stepwise process comprising homoconjugate addition, water-assisted proton transfer, and 7-endo-trig S(N)2 ' ring closure.

Abstract:2,5-Bis(alkynylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadienes 3 were formed highly regio- and chemoselectively in excellent yield by the homocoupling reaction of 2 equiv of bis(alkynyl)silanes 1 mediated by a low-valent zirconocene species (Negishi reagent) generated in situ from Cp2ZrBu2. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis of 2,5-bis(phenylalkynyldimethylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadiene (3a) revealed a sandwich-type conformation. Hydrolysis or halogenation of these zirconacyclopentadienes 3 afforded multisubstituted stereodefined Si-bridged conjugated systems. Skeletal rearrangement of these 2,5-bis(alkynylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadienes with aromatic substituents afforded zirconacyclohexadiene−silacyclobutene fused ring compounds 4. Using these zirconacyclopentadienes 3 as starting reactive organometallic reagents, interesting cyclic compounds such as bis(alkynylsilyl)benzene derivatives and bis(alkynylsilyl)thiophene derivatives could be prepared in high yield. Further applications of these alkynylsilyl-substituted compounds for more complicated products and functional materials can be expected.

Abstract:Zirconacyclopentadienes reacted with acetylenecarboxylates in the presence of a stoichiometric amount (2 equiv) of copper chloride to give benzene derivatives in high yields along with the formation of a copper mirror on the wall of the reaction vessel. Reactions of unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadienes prepared from two different alkynes with acetylenecarboxylates gave benzene derivatives from three different alkynes in high yields with high selectivities. Preparation of unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadienes and benzene derivatives formation can be done in one-pot, The structure of the reaction product of the unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadiene having a trimethylsilyl group and a methyl group in the alpha- and beta-position, respectively, with acetylenedicarboxylate was determined by X-ray analysis. It indicated that the regiochemistry of those substituents was maintained during the reaction. When the coupling reaction of zirconacyclopentadienes with acetylenedicarboxylate in the presence of copper chloride was carried out at -78 degrees C, linear trienes were obtained as the intermediates in high yields after hydrolysis. Warming the mixture without hydrolysis gave the desired benzene derivatives in high yields. Use of an unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadiene afforded a mixture of two isomers of the linear triene as intermediates after hydrolysis. When the mixture of the two isomers was warmed to room temperature without hydrolysis, both isomers gave the same benzene derivative. In the presence of a catalytic amount of copper chloride (10 mol %), this cycloaddition proceeded to give benzene derivatives in good yields without formation of the copper mirror. The reaction under the catalytic conditions at -78 degrees C also gave a linear triene after hydrolysis.

Abstract:Zirconacyclopentadienes, prepared from two alkynes or a diyne, reacted with the alkyl-, trimethylsilyl-, or alkoxy-substituted third alkyne as well as an alkyne with an electron-withdrawing group in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of NiBr2(PPh3)2 to give benzene derivatives in good yields. Heteroatom-containing diynes such as dipropargylbenzylamine and propargyl-homopropargylbenzylamine gave isoindoline and tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives in good to high yields. This procedure was also used for the selective preparation of benzene derivatives from three different alkynes. The use of trimethylsilyl-substituted alkyne as the first, second or third alkyne afforded desilylated benzene derivatives. The reaction of zirconacyclopentadienes with allenes gave benzene derivatives as a mixture of two isomers.

Abstract:A series of ethylene‐bridged C1‐symmetric ansa‐(3‐R‐indenyl)(fluorenyl) zirconocene complexes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) incorporating a pendant arene substituent on the 3‐position of indenyl ring have been synthesized. The structure of complex 4 was further confirmed by X‐ray diffraction analysis. When activated with methylaluminoxane, four sterically less encumbered complexes 1, 2, 4 and 5 could catalyze the dimerization of propylene in toluene at 100°C to afford 2‐methyl‐1‐pentene with high selectivities up to 95.7–98.4% and moderate activities of 2.00 × 104 to 7.89 × 104 g (mol‐Zr⋅h)−1. Abstract:Treatment of Cp2ZrCl2 with 2 equiv of EtMgBr in THF, followed by addition of an internal alkyne and subsequent treatment with COI2 gave α,β-disubstituted cyclopentenone in good to high yields. When a conjugated enyne was used as an alkyne component, α-alkenyl cyclopentenone was selectively formed in 80–89% yields. In the case of 4,6-decadiyne, α-alkynylcyclopentenone was formed in 88% yield. Bridged alkynes such as 1,4-dihexynylbenzene afforded α,α′-bridged cyclopentenone compounds in good yields.

Abstract:1,2,3,4-Tetrasubstituted cyclopentadienes and indene derivatives with identical or different substituents were obtained in good to excellent isolated yields through a zirconocene- and CuCl-mediated intermolecular coupling process. This synthetic procedure involved three organic partners, including one CH2 I2 , and two different or identical alkynes. Two alkynes or one diyne undergo Cp2Zr(II)-mediated (Cp = η(5)-C5H5) pair-selective reductive coupling to afford the corresponding zirconacyclopentadiene derivatives, which react, in the presence of CuCl and 1,3-dimethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2(1 H)-pyrimidinone (DMPU), with CH2I2 through intermolecular followed by intramolecular coupling to afford the cyclopentadiene derivatives. An application of the prepared tetrasubstituted cyclopentadiene derivatives was demonstrated by the facile synthesis of the corresponding zirconocene complexes [((4R)Cp)2ZrCl2] and [((4R)Cp)2ZrR'2] (R' = Me, Et, or nBu). The unique 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted cyclopentadiene ligands and the corresponding metallocenes are expected to have further applications in organometallic chemistry and organic synthesis.

Abstract:Direct transformation of five-membered zirconacycles to carbocyclic compounds is of great synthetic interest. The reaction of zirconacycles with electrophiles containing at least two reactive functional groups or an oxidant affords various carbocycles through cross coupling, addition, and/or oxidative coupling reactions. In this paper, we present our recent results on the zirconacycle-mediated formation of carbocycles, including: (1) 1,1-cycloaddition of oxalyl dichloride with zirconacycles; (2) benzoquinone-promoted coupling of zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of CuCl; (3) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadienes to quinones; (4) cycloaddition of zirconacyclopentadiene with 2-bromoacrylate, 2-bromoacrylaldehyde and 3-bromofuran-2,5-dione in the presence of CuCl; (5) one-pot coupling of two alkynes and an alkene to form cyclohexene derivatives via zirconacyclopentadienes; and (6) dianionic cycloaddition of decatetraenes with esters or acyl chlorides to form nine-membered carbocycles.
