Abstract:Herein, a general strategy for chemo- and regioselective 1,2-reduction of chromium-bound arenes was developed, thus providing rapid access to 1,3-cyclohexadienes. Selective arene activation via π-complexation along with the use of mild hydride Ph3SiH can overcome the inherently low reactivity of arene π-bonds while tolerating various reduction-sensitive functional groups. Its versatility further enables a regiodivergent deuteration. Using different sequences of (non)deuterated hydride and acid reagents, the deuterated positions as well as the degrees of deuterium incorporation can be controlled precisely, which leads to a large and previously inaccessible chemical space for 1,3-cyclohexadiene isotopologues. A reasonable mechanism was proposed based on intermediate capture and control experiments. The synthetic value of this selective 1,2-reduction was demonstrated in the formal total synthesis of (±)-galanthamine and (±)-lycoramine.

Abstract:Reaction of zirconacyclopentadienes with one equiv or two equiv of aryl iodides in the presence of CuCl and DMPU afforded mono-arylated diene derivatives in high yields with high selectivities. Treatment of zirconacyclopentadienes with one equiv of 2-thienyl iodide similarly gave thienyldienes in the presence of CuCl and DMPU, whereas the reaction with two equiv of 2-thienyl iodide produced thienyl iododiene derivatives in high yields. Zirconacyclopentadienes reacted with two equiv of alkynyl iodides to give iododienynes in good yields in the presence of CuCl. This is in sharp contrast to the reaction with two equiv of alkynyl iodides in the presence of CuCl and DMPU which provides dienediynes.

Abstract:Stereodefined multisubstituted 1-cyano- and 1,4-dicyano-1,3-butadiene derivatives were obtained in excellent yields of the isolated product from their corresponding monohalo and dihalobutadienes and CuCN. This reaction proceeded with high stereoselectivity and retention of the stercochemistry of the starting halobutadienes. A study of the utility of the thus-obtained 1-cyano- and 1,4-dicyano-1,3-butadiene derivatives was demonstrated by their reactions with organolithium reagents. 2H-Pyrrole or iminocyclopentadiene derivatives were formed in high yields from 1-cyano-4halo-1,3-butadienes and organolithium reagents. When 1,4-dicyano-1,3-butadienes were treated with organolithium reagents followed by trapping with electrophiles, a tandem process took place to afford 2H-pyrrolyl nitriles in excellent yields. Reduction of 1,4-dicyano-1,3-butadiene derivatives with LiAlH4 showed novel reaction patterns relative to normal nitriles.

Abstract:2,5-Bis(alkynylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadienes 3 were formed highly regio- and chemoselectively in excellent yield by the homocoupling reaction of 2 equiv of bis(alkynyl)silanes 1 mediated by a low-valent zirconocene species (Negishi reagent) generated in situ from Cp2ZrBu2. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis of 2,5-bis(phenylalkynyldimethylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadiene (3a) revealed a sandwich-type conformation. Hydrolysis or halogenation of these zirconacyclopentadienes 3 afforded multisubstituted stereodefined Si-bridged conjugated systems. Skeletal rearrangement of these 2,5-bis(alkynylsilyl)-1-zirconacyclopentadienes with aromatic substituents afforded zirconacyclohexadiene−silacyclobutene fused ring compounds 4. Using these zirconacyclopentadienes 3 as starting reactive organometallic reagents, interesting cyclic compounds such as bis(alkynylsilyl)benzene derivatives and bis(alkynylsilyl)thiophene derivatives could be prepared in high yield. Further applications of these alkynylsilyl-substituted compounds for more complicated products and functional materials can be expected.

Abstract:Stereo-defined 1,1,4,4-tetrahalo- and 1,1,4,4-mixed-tetrahalo-1,3-butadienes were obtained in excellent yields via desilylation–halogenation of their corresponding 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-dihalo-1,3-dienes, which could be readily prepared from the zirconocene-mediated high-yield and high-regioselective cyclo-dimerization of 1-trimethylsilyl-1-alkynes followed by halogenation. These poly-functionalized gem-dihalodienes are potentially useful building blocks.

Abstract:1,2,3-Trisubstituted cyclopentadienes and tetrahydroindene derivatives were prepared by a one-step reaction from zirconacyclopentene complexes, which are easily prepared from alkynes and EtMgBr (or ethylene) and Cp2ZrCl2. Reaction of zirconacyclopentenes with phthaloyl chlorides afforded intramolecular Michael addition reaction products. The structure of one of the products was determined by X-ray study.

Abstract:Stereodefined butadienyl phosphines and related derivatives were readily prepared in high yields with perfect regio-selectivity via the zirconocene-mediated pair-selective coupling of alkynylphosphines with ethylene or alkynylphosphines with normal alkynes. Interesting and synthetically useful iodination reactions were found when the in situ generated alpha-phosphinozirconacyclopentenes or alpha-phosphinozirconacyclopentadienes were treated with I-2. Abstract:Hydroboration of 1-bromo-1-alkynes with dibromoborane followed by addition of 3 or 4 equiv of Me2Zn provides an efficient and selective route to (Z)-2-alkenyldimethylboranes (3) or (Z)-2-alkenylmethylzincs (4), respectively, which have been successfully applied to one-pot Suzuki (B-I) or Negishi (Zn-I) coupling in some less demanding cases. However, in more demanding cross-coupling reactions, only the use of either (Z)-2-alkenyliodides (5) or the alkenylzincs prepared from lithiation and then zincation of 5 proves to be highly satisfactory (Zn-II or Zn-III protocol). On the contrary, the corresponding organoboron coupling under B-II or B-III protocol appears to be less satisfactory. Preliminary studies indicate that certain substituents proximal to trisubstituted alkenes seriously affect the course of the desired alkenylboron crosscoupling.

Abstract:Zirconacyclopentadienes reacted with acetylenecarboxylates in the presence of a stoichiometric amount (2 equiv) of copper chloride to give benzene derivatives in high yields along with the formation of a copper mirror on the wall of the reaction vessel. Reactions of unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadienes prepared from two different alkynes with acetylenecarboxylates gave benzene derivatives from three different alkynes in high yields with high selectivities. Preparation of unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadienes and benzene derivatives formation can be done in one-pot, The structure of the reaction product of the unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadiene having a trimethylsilyl group and a methyl group in the alpha- and beta-position, respectively, with acetylenedicarboxylate was determined by X-ray analysis. It indicated that the regiochemistry of those substituents was maintained during the reaction. When the coupling reaction of zirconacyclopentadienes with acetylenedicarboxylate in the presence of copper chloride was carried out at -78 degrees C, linear trienes were obtained as the intermediates in high yields after hydrolysis. Warming the mixture without hydrolysis gave the desired benzene derivatives in high yields. Use of an unsymmetrical zirconacyclopentadiene afforded a mixture of two isomers of the linear triene as intermediates after hydrolysis. When the mixture of the two isomers was warmed to room temperature without hydrolysis, both isomers gave the same benzene derivative. In the presence of a catalytic amount of copper chloride (10 mol %), this cycloaddition proceeded to give benzene derivatives in good yields without formation of the copper mirror. The reaction under the catalytic conditions at -78 degrees C also gave a linear triene after hydrolysis.

Abstract:Formation of cyclic compounds from zirconacycles has been performed by a combination of Michael addition and coupling with an alkenyl iodide moiety in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl. The reaction of 3-iodopropenoates with various zirconacyclopentadienes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of CuCl afforded penta- and hexasubstituted cyclopentadienes. The reaction of 3-iodocycloenones with zirconacyclopentadienes, zirconacyclopentenes, or zirconacyclopentanes gave spirocyclic compounds in good yields.

Abstract:Depending on the desilylation reagents used, 1-halo-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3-butadienes afforded either 1-halo-1-trimethylsilyl-1,3-butadienes or 1-halo-4-trimethylsilyl-1,3-butadienes in excellent yields with excellent selectivity, respectively, when treated with CF3COOH or with NaOMe. These monosilylated 1,3-butadiene products could be further desilylated to generate their corresponding halobutadienes via the above reagent-controlled desilylation reaction. When 1,4-dihalo-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3-dienes were treated with MeONa/MeOH at room temperature, desilylation of both of the two trimethylsilyl groups took place to afford their corresponding 1,4-dihalo-1,3-dienes in excellent yields. The commonly used desilylation reagent CF3COOH did not work for these dihalobutadienes.

Abstract:Zirconacyclopentenes reacted with isocyanates to give aza- or oxazirconacycles which were conveniently coverted into the corresponding haloamidation products of alkynes after halogenation. 1,4-Bistrimethylsilyl substituted zirconacyclopentadiene afforded a low yield of iodoamidation product, whereas zirconium–alkyne complexes stabilized with phosphine gave the iodoamidation products in moderate yields. On the other hand, zirconacyclopentanes reacted with isocyanates to give trimerization products of isocyanate, isocyanurates.

Abstract:1,2,3,4-Tetrasubstituted cyclopentadienes and indene derivatives with identical or different substituents were obtained in good to excellent isolated yields through a zirconocene- and CuCl-mediated intermolecular coupling process. This synthetic procedure involved three organic partners, including one CH2 I2 , and two different or identical alkynes. Two alkynes or one diyne undergo Cp2Zr(II)-mediated (Cp = η(5)-C5H5) pair-selective reductive coupling to afford the corresponding zirconacyclopentadiene derivatives, which react, in the presence of CuCl and 1,3-dimethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2(1 H)-pyrimidinone (DMPU), with CH2I2 through intermolecular followed by intramolecular coupling to afford the cyclopentadiene derivatives. An application of the prepared tetrasubstituted cyclopentadiene derivatives was demonstrated by the facile synthesis of the corresponding zirconocene complexes [((4R)Cp)2ZrCl2] and [((4R)Cp)2ZrR'2] (R' = Me, Et, or nBu). The unique 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted cyclopentadiene ligands and the corresponding metallocenes are expected to have further applications in organometallic chemistry and organic synthesis.

Abstract:The textbook alkene halogenation reaction establishes straightforward access to vicinal dihaloalkanes. However, a robust catalytic method for dihalogenizing electron-deficient olefins in an enantioselective manner is still under development, and its mechanism remains controversial. Herein, we disclose efficient regio-, anti-diastereo-, and enantioselective dibromination, bromochlorination, and dichlorination reactions of enones catalyzed by a chiral N,N'-dioxide/Yb(OTf)3 complex. With the combination of electrophilic halogen and halide salts as halogenating agents, an array of homo- and heterodihalogenated derivatives is achieved in moderate to good enantioselectivities. Moreover, DFT calculations reveal that a novel triplet halo-radical pylon intermediate is probable in accounting for the exclusive regio- and anti-diastereoselectivity.

Abstract:Treatment of zirconacyclopentadienes with two equiv of iodine in THF in the presence of 1.0 equiv of CuCl gave diiododienes in good to high yields without formation of monoiododienes. This is in sharp contrast to the case without CuCl which afforded monoiododienes as major products. For zirconacyclopentenes. CuCl was also effective but the use of ICl was more practical. When zirconacyclopentenes were treated with 2 equiv of ICl, only diiodination products were formed. Preparation of silacyclopentadienes or spiro compounds using the diidodienes was demonstrated. Abstract:A catalytic highly regioselective, diastereoselective, and enantioselective cyclopropanation of electron-deficient dienes and bromides via direct sulfide organocatalysis is reported. A variety of vinylcyclopropanes featuring a quaternary chiral center were synthesized in up to 99% yield and up to 98:2 enantiomeric ratio (er). These products could be facilely transformed to various interesting molecules with great structural diversity.

Abstract:Conjugated 1-bromo or 1-iodo-1,3-dienes bearing a sulfide substituent have been synthesized via 1,2-sulfur migration from propargylic thioethers upon activation with NIS or NBS. The reaction generally proceeds with high control over the regio- and diastereoselectivity. Highly substituted thiophenes and selenophenes are easily obtained from the generated dienes.
