Abstract:We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental observation of coexistence of scalar dark and bright solitons in a fiber laser operating in the near zero-dispersion regime. We show that because of the incoherent cross coupling, under suitable conditions a bright soliton formed in the net anomalous cavity dispersion regime could bind with a dark soliton formed in the net normal cavity dispersion regime in a fiber laser. The properties of the dark and bright solitons, as well as their bound states, are experimentally investigated. Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of temporal anti-dark solitons in optical fibers. Under suitable condition the average dynamics of light propagation in a unidirectional fiber ring laser is governed by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). Dark solitons were found in the fiber laser in the net normal cavity dispersion region. We further show experimentally that at net normal near zero cavity dispersion, where the third-order dispersion plays a role, either the dark solitons, or anti-dark solitons, or coexistence of both types of solitons could be obtained in the same fiber laser. Abstract:We present detailed studies on dark-bright vector solitons formed in dispersion- and birefringence-managed fiber lasers sustained by either incoherent or coherent cross-polarization coupling. We show that even under strong influence of the gain bandwidth limitation, coupled dark-bright solitons can still be formed in a fiber laser. Unique features of the dissipative dark-bright vector solitons are studied both numerically and experimentally, and compared with those of the vector solitons formed in nonlinear Schrodinger equation systems.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of stable dark solitons in an all normal dispersion fiber laser. We found experimentally that dark soliton formation is a generic feature of the fiber laser under strong continuous wave (CW) emission. However, only under appropriate pump strength and negative cavity feedback, stable single or multiple dark soliton could be achieved. Furthermore, we show that the features of the observed dark solitons could be well understood based on the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE).

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of dark solitons embedded in a stable periodic pulse train emitted by a net normal dispersion cavity fiber laser. Our experimental result shows that in addition of forming in a continuous-wave background, a dark soliton could also be formed in a stable periodic pulse train background. Numerical simulations have well reproduced the experimental result. Moreover, numerical simulations also show that as a result of the periodic pulse train background the formed dark soliton could exhibit a dark pulse envelope that is much broader than its actual pulse width.

Abstract:We report on the first experimental observation of vector dark solitons in an erbium-doped single mode fiber ring laser. We show experimentally that two orthogonal linearly polarized dark solitons could couple together incoherently through the cross polarization phase modulation and form a bound stale of dark solitons. In particular, the formed vector dark solitons are stable even under existence of high frequency periodic background intensity modulation. Numerical simulations have well confirmed the existence of vector dark solitons in single mode fiber lasers and their stability under periodic background intensity modulation. Abstract:We observe a novel type of vector dark soliton in a fiber ring laser. The vector dark soliton consists of stable localized structures separating the two orthogonal linear polarization eigenstates of the laser emission and is visible only when the total laser emission is measured. Numerical simulations based on the coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations have well reproduced the results of the experimental observation.

Abstract:By numerically solving the coupled laser Ginzburg-Landau equations and using the pulse tracing technique to incorporate the cavity effect in the simulation, we have explicitly calculated the soliton polarization ellipses throughout the cavity of a fiber-ring laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, and investigated the soliton polarization dynamics in laser cavities. It was found that in a conventional stable soliton operation state, although the soliton polarization varies as the pulse propagates, at a fixed position inside the laser cavity the soliton polarization is invariant with time. However, in the presence of laser dynamics, at a fixed location within the cavity the soliton could either have multiple alternating fixed polarization states or no fixed polarization state at all, depending on the soliton dynamics.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of coexistence of solitons and polarization domains, as well as features of soliton collision with polarization domain walls (or kink solitons) in a single mode fiber laser. Depending on the sign of cavity dispersion, either bright or dark solitons have been formed in our fiber laser. Under suitable laser operation conditions, they could even coexist with polarization domains and collide with the domain walls. We show experimental evidence of both the elastic and inelastic soliton collisions with the domain wall solitons. Some interesting features of soliton interaction with polarization domains in a fiber laser are also firstly revealed. Abstract:Polarization properties of a soliton generated in a fiber laser of zero dispersion are investigated. Similar to the solitons generated in a fiber laser of all anomalous dispersion, the polarization ellipse of the soliton rotated during pulse evolution inside the cavity. The number of rotations relies on the cavity averaged birefringence with nonlinear bias. The larger the cavity averaged birefringence is, the bigger the bias is. When the period multiplying of solitons appears, the number of rotations depends on both multiplying periods and the cavity averaged birefringence. Multiple polarization states can be observed at a fixed position in the cavity depending on the multiplying period. When the cavity length is equal to n times of the averaged beat length, the polarization ellipse of the soliton rotates n∗m times at a fixed position, where m is equal to the multiplying period.

Abstract:Passively mode locked fiber lasers are excellent platforms for soliton generation. Here, multi-state switchable behaviors in a slightly normal dispersion mode-locked fiber laser are experimentally demonstrated with an identical configuration. A saturable absorber based on single-wall carbon nanotube is served as mode-locking device and an intrinsic birefringence spectral filtering is employed as a tunable inline filter. Consequently, with properly modifying pumping powers and orientations of polarization controller paddles, the operation regimes of the proposed laser could be reversibly switched between dissipative solitons and amplifier similaritons, and the characteristics of intermediate states are recorded. Tunable dissipative solitons with a tuning range of 38 nm and noise-like pulses could also alternatively be generated. This multi-state behavior switching could be attributed to the strong filtering caused by the limited gain bandwidth under strong pump strength. The experimental observations of these multi-state switchable transitions may offer insight into the pulse regime dynamics in the near-zero dispersion region and offer flexibility in multi-functional designs of the laser configuration, which would enable innovations in nonlinear optics and its applications.

Dark Soliton Trains Generation From Self-Mode-Locking Fiber Laser With An Ultra-Long Ring Cavity

Abstract:We demonstrated a multi-dark soliton train generated from self-mode-locking ultra-long ring cavity fiber laser. The fiber laser used 10m double-clad Yb-doped fiber as gain medium, and used a polarization independent isolator to ensure the light propagation in one direction. The ring cavity of the laser was designed without any intra-cavity polarization controlling component. The cavity length is 1300 meters by insetting single mode fiber. When the pump power was increased to 2.75W, the multi-dark soliton trains were obtained. The stable pulse train has a repetition rate of 153.9 kHz corresponding to the cavity length. The number of sub-pulse continues to decrease during the increase of the incident pumping power until 3.39W. Stable three peaks appear in the spectra of our fiber laser due to the absence of the polarization controller in the cavity. The maximum peak wavelength locates around 1083.9nm with the 3dB bandwidth of 1.4nm. There are two sidebands with the central wavelength of 1086.3nm and 1090.1nm with a lower intensity. The occurrence of multi-dark soliton pulses train is relevant to the self-mode-locked operation at the cavity with a large amount of normal dispersion and accumulated nonlinearity.
Bright-dark Solitons for a Set of the General Coupled Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations in a Birefringent Fiber

Abstract:Under investigation in this paper is the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with the four-wave mixing term, which describe the optical solitons in a birefringent fiber. Via the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy reduction, we obtain the N-bright-dark soliton solutions in terms of the Gram determinant. Propagation and interaction of the solitons corresponding to the electric fields in the two orthogonal polarizations are discussed and presented graphically. We find that the one bright-dark soliton possesses the periodic oscillation and exhibits the breather-like profile, which is different from that in the previous literature. Besides, for the one soliton, we observe that the larger velocity leads to the fiercer oscillation. Elastic interactions including the head-on and overtaking interactions between the two bright-dark solitons are demonstrated. Particularly, we find the oblique inelastic interaction between the two bright-dark solitons, which possess the V-shape profile in the zero background component and the Y-shape profile in the nonzero background component. Besides, we present two cases of the bound-state solitons. For the one case, the two solitons interact with each other all the time along a direction and for the other case, the resonance phenomenon is raised.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the transition dynamics between 2nd and 3rd harmonic mode-locking states using the dispersive Fourier transform technology in a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser. Keeping the pump power unchanged and adjusting polarization controller to change intracavity-loss-dependent gain profile and the spectral filtering effect, a set of soliton dynamics induced by soliton interaction are revealed before the soliton splitting. Solitons undergo similar oscillation behaviors during the reverse decay process of the harmonic mode-locking order until one of the solitons disappears. In these transient dynamics, a significant wavelength shift phenomenon could be observed in the transition process of harmonic orders. The numerical results further show that intracavity spectral filtering effects play key role in the harmonic order transition dynamics process, consistent with experimental results. It provides new insights into the evolution and dynamics behavior in harmonic mode-locked soliton order conversion and its potential applications.

Abstract:Because of the complexity and difficulty of realizing a multi-wavelength soliton state, reports on its internal dynamic characteristics are scarce. In this study, the switching and periodic soliton explosion processes of the multi-wavelength soliton state in a negative dispersion passively mode-locked fiber laser are realized. The generation of the multi-wavelength soliton state undergoes the process of noise, oscillation, and stable mode-locking, and the splitting and annihilation of solitons with different group velocities directly impact the generation and disappearance of three wavelengths. Positive and negative dispersion lead to different group velocities of solitons. The presence and displacement of solitons with different group velocities cause soliton collisions, which lead to soliton explosions. A soliton experiences relative phase oscillation, chaos, and oscillation, as well as convergence and separation before and after an explosion. With an increase in parameters related to pump power, single-soliton oscillation, multi-wavelength solitons, and chaos are found in experiments and simulations, proving the relevance and reliability between simulation and experimental results. This work promotes the dynamical study of multi-soliton collisions in nonlinear science and the development of chaos theory in multi-comb lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate spectral-furcated vector solitons in normal-dispersion fiber lasers comprising a section of polarizationmaintaining fiber. The spectrum of each orthogonal-polarized component is confined by the birefringence-related phasematching principle, and the bicorn spectral structure corresponds to the zero-order sidebands of two vector modes. Due to the Hopf bifurcation effect, the vector soliton evolves into a breathing state at the higher pump level, accompanied by an extra set of sub-sidebands that continuously exchange energy with the zero-order sidebands. Simulation results fully reproduce experimental observations of the spectral furcation and soliton breathing, offering comprehensive insights into the pulse-shaping mechanism of the birefringence-managed soliton.
