Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinearity optimization method by altering distribution of passive fibers in a dissipative-soliton mode-locked fiber laser to level up output parameters. In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-nJ pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 kW peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.

Abstract:Soliton explosion and soliton pulsation are among the most intriguing nonlinear dynamics in dissipative systems. In this paper, we construct an ultrafast Yb-doped fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Up to five nonlinear regimes are observed successively in our device by adjusting two intra-cavity polarization controllers, including stable dissipation solitons, noise-like pulses (NLPs), soliton explosion, soliton pulsation and Q-switched mode-locked (QSML) state. Benefiting from the dispersive Fourier transform (DFT) method, we capture the real-time spectra evolution of those nonlinear dynamics, which can help researcher to better understand different soliton dynamics. Our work will enhance a more comprehensive understanding of nonlinear phenomenon in dissipative systems.
Dissipative Soliton Resonance and Noise-Like Pulse Generation of Large Normal Dispersion Yb-doped Fiber Laser

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate two types of dissipative soliton resonant (DSR) and noise-like pulse (NLP) in a mode-locked fiber laser using the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). By appropriately adjusting the polarization states, the switchable generation of DSR and NLP can be achieved from one mode-locked fiber laser. By adjusting the pump power, the pulse width of DSR increases gradually from 2.45 to 13.35 ns with a constant peak intensity, while the NLP just has a little increase, even splitting into two narrower pulses at higher pump power. Two types of DSR and NLP have the same pulse periods of 1.29 μs, corresponding to the cavity length of the fiber laser. The obtained results display the evolution process of DSR pulse and NLP in mode-locked fiber laser and have some application in optical sensing, spectral reflectometry, micromachining, and other relative domains.

Abstract:Various pulse regimes have been discovered in mode-locked fiber lasers with carefully designed cavity setups. However, the transitions between different types of stable pulse solutions are rarely observed in a laser with the same cavity configuration. Here, we report on the experimental observation of the transformation from stretched pulses (SPs) to dissipative solitons (DSs) in an all-polarization-maintaining dispersion-managed mode-locked Yb fiber laser for the first time. By means of the time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique, the temporal and spectral dynamics of transient behaviors from pulse breaking to pulse recovering are identified in real time. It is revealed that the overdriven nonlinear effect induced by pump increase triggers the wave breaking of SPs, and the improved net-cavity dispersion originated from wavelength shift helps the self-recovering of DSs. Numerical simulations validate the experimental observations and bring insights to the understanding of transient nonlinear dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:In this paper, a self-pulsing Er-doped fiber laser operating in the dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) regime is firstly reported. By adjusting the pumping power and intracavity pulse polarization, the generated mode-locking pulse could evolve between soliton pulse, dissipative soliton resonance pulse and noise-like pulse (NLP). In the dissipative soliton resonance mode-locking regime, the generated rectangular-shaped pulses centered at 1570.5 nm with a maximum average output power of 20.6 mW and a pulse duration of 8.9 ns. Meanwhile, in the NLP regime, the maximum average output power is 49.9 mW, corresponding to a pulse energy of 2.5 nJ. The self -pulsing evolving dynamics can be analyzed using weak NPR effect by simultaneously considering the polari-zation dependent loss from the polarization controller and the reabsorption loss of the un-pumped gain fiber.

Abstract:The dispersive Fourier transform technique provides feasibility of exploring non-repetitive events and the buildup process in ultrafast lasers. In this paper, we report a new buildup process of dissipative solitons in a simplified mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser, which includes more complex physics stages such as the Q- switching stage, raised and damped relaxation oscillation stages, noise-like stage, successive soliton explosions stage, and soliton breathing stage. Complete evolution dynamics of noise-like pulse and double pulse are also investigated with dispersive Fourier transform. For the noise-like pulse dynamics process, it will only experience the Q- switching and relaxation oscillation stages. In the case of dissipative soliton and noise-like pulse, the double pulse buildup behavior is manifested as the replication of individual pulses. A weak energy migration occurs between two pulses before reaching steady state. Meanwhile, real-time mutual conversion of the dissipative soliton and noise-like pulse has been experimentally observed, which appears to be instantaneous without extra physical processes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on these physical phenomena observed together in a mode-locked fiber laser. The results further enrich the dynamics of mode-locked fiber lasers and provide potential conditions for obtaining intelligent mode-locked lasers with controllable output.

Abstract:Due to the fascinating features, pulsating solitons attract much attention in the field of nonlinear soliton dynamics and ultrafast lasers. So far, most of the investigations on pulsating soliton are conducted in Er-doped fiber lasers. In this work, we reported the periodic transition between two evolving pulsating soliton states in an Yb-doped fiber laser. By using the real-time measurement techniques, the spectral and temporal characteristics of this transition state were investigated. Two evolving soliton pulsation states have similar evolution process, i.e., from pulsating towards quasi-stable mode-locked states. However, the details of the two processes are different, such as the pulse energy levels, pulsating modulation depths, duration of quasi-stable mode-locked states. The transition between two evolving soliton pulsation states could be attributed to the interaction of the polarizer and the varying polarization states of the pulse inside the laser cavity. The experimental results will contribute to the further understanding of soliton pulsating dynamics in dissipative optical systems.

Abstract:Transition from a gain-guided soliton (GGS) to a fully developed noise-like pulse (NLP) is numerically demonstrated in fiber lasers operated in the normal dispersion regime, which explains well the experimental observation of spectrum evolution that the bottom of the averaged spectrum gradually broadens with pump power increasing. Numerical results suggest that the transition could also happen under the condition of cavity linear phase delay bias change with fixed pump power. It is demonstrated that the peak power clamping effect and the normal dispersion are the key factors leading to the spectrum evolution. In addition, intermittent meta-stable states between GGS and NLP can be obtained when the cavity dispersion is chosen at small normal dispersion.

Abstract:This paper reports on the experimental observation of a stable single dissipative soliton, a noise-like pulse, and a dissipative soliton pair in an actively mode-locked fiber laser within an all-normal dispersion cavity. The laser consists of fully polarization-maintaining fibers and components, providing a linear output polarization state. The full width at half maximum of the pulse is measured to be 25.3 ps and the output pulse energy after the gain fiber can reach 1.07 nJ. By shifting the direct current (DC) bias voltage of the modulator to V-pi, the spectral width increased from 6.3 nm to 7.7 nm. Under the same pumping power of 246 mW, the single dissipative soliton and the pair can exchange with each other by adjusting the DC voltage of the Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator.

Abstract:Experimental observation of mode-locked dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses, including single-mode DSR pulses and multimode DSR pulses, in a Yb-doped fiber laser is reported. DSR pulses in single-mode state and multi-mode state can exist at the same time and can be output stably. The multi-mode DSR pulses exhibit same linearly broadening characteristics and bell-shaped spectral shape as single-mode DSR pulses. The results would be beneficial for expanding the knowledge of nonlinear dynamics to multimode fiber lasers and provide new insights for DSR pulse output with a fully multimode structure to get larger pulse energy.

Abstract:In mode-locked fiber lasers, the formation of ultrashort pulses from noisy or unstable states is a crucial area of research. Investigating these complex nonlinear dynamics can lead to valuable insights and new practical engineering techniques, particularly for the design and optimization of optical systems. Time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform, utilized in our study to investigate dissipative solitons formation in a net-normal dispersion nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locked fiber laser, provides a window into the intricate dynamics of such systems. In our experiments, the identification of five distinct transient stages in the formation process sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of dissipative soliton (DS) formation. The five distinct transient stages involved in the formation process include relaxation oscillation, modulation instability, spectral broadening, soliton explosions (SEs), and stable mode-locking. Notably, we also observed the generation of dissipative rogue waves during the SE stage. Our findings shed light on the intricate dynamics of DS formation and offer valuable insights for the design and optimization of mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:We reported on the dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) phenomenon in a mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser by using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. It was found that the multi-pulse oscillation under high pump power could be circumvented by properly adjusting the polarization controllers, namely, the wave-breaking-free rectangular pulse in DSR region was achieved. As the DSR signature, the pulse duration varied from 8.8 ps to 22.92 ns with the increasing pump power. Correspondingly, the maximum pulse energy was 3.24 nJ. The results demonstrated that the DSR phenomenon could exist in Yb-doped fiber lasers, which could be used to achieve wave-breaking-free, ultrahigh-energy pulse.

Abstract:We report on the operation of a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser made of purely positive dispersion fibers and mode-locked by using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. It was experimentally found that apart from the gain-guided soliton operation the laser can also emit a kind of noise-like pulse. We show numerically that the noise-like pulse emission is caused by the peak power clamping effect of the laser cavity on the gain-guided soliton.

Abstract:We present results of our research on the observation of a bound state of double dissipative-soliton operation of a passive mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation mechanism through the proper adjustment of the wave plates. The generated dissipative solitons with large net positive cavity Group Velocity Dispersion (GVD) are characterized by their spectral profile of sharp peaks near edges, which are distinct from those of the conventional solitons in fiber lasers. By using an artificial saturable absorber, we have obtained stable single and double bound-state dissipative solitons. In all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped single-mode fiber lasers, the bound state of double dissipative solitons with a full-width at half-maximum of 7 ps, and a fixed pulse separation of 8 ps independent of the experimental conditions is achieved for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Our result once again shows that the passively mode-locked fiber laser with large normal dispersion can help to explore dissipative soliton dynamics.
