Abstract:A recent communication [Opt. Disagreement on the formation mechanism proposed in this communication, we would like to indicate a more accurate explanation in order to clarify some potential misunderstanding on dark pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate the dark pulse emission in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-Based fiber ring laser with net abnormal dispersion. By means of the polarization-dependent property of SOA, the laser is mode-locked by using nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. Stable bright pulses and dark pulses are observed through changing the current of the SOA and altering the polarization states. The dependence of both the polarization states and the current of SOA on the formation of dark pulses in the cavity have been carefully investigated, revealing that the output average power of the measured dark pulse is far greater than that of the bright pulse under the same current. Moreover, the evolution process from bright pulse to dark pulse has been studied, showing the role of the extinction ratio of PCs in the transition process. The polarization dependent and bistability properties of SOA and the extinction ratio of PCs are dominant for the dark pulses generation, giving a further evidence of the generation of dark pulses in different laser cavity.

Abstract:A wavelength tunable, dark pulse, and bright pulse-switched dual-wavelength fiber ring laser is reported. Through adding high nonlinear optical fiber as a nonlinear medium in the fiber ring cavity, the double-wavelength dark-bright pulse pair can be formed. The separation of dark-bright pulse pair can be achieved by polarization beam splitter. The dark pulse and bright pulse with orthogonal polarization correspond to different wavelengths, respectively. Then, via tunable optical filter and polarization controller to filter out the wavelength we need and adjust the polarization, we achieved the interconversion of dark pulse and bright pulse in the same wavelength and the tunableness of wavelengths of dark pulse and bright pulse in our laser.

Abstract:We experimentally report the dynamics of multi-soliton patterns noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a passively mode-locked fiber laser, which the pulse duration can be linearly tuned from 8.21 ns to 128.23 ns by 2.936 ns / 10 mW. Benefiting from the drastically strengthened nonlinear effects in the cavity and the high gain amplification in the unidirectional ring (UR), the transformation from rectangular-shaped NLP to Gaussian-shaped NLP is experimentally achieved. Versatile multi-soliton patterns are observed in NLP regime for the first time, namely, single-scale soliton clusters, high-order harmonic mode-locking, and localized chaotic multiple pulses. In particular, the spectrum evolution with pump power and spectrum stability in 2 hours are also monitored. The obtained results demonstrate the rectangular-shaped NLP can fully transform into Gaussian-shaped NLP, and the multi-soliton patterns can exist in the NLP regime, which contributes to further understanding the nature and mechanism of the NLP in a passively mode-locked fiber laser. Abstract:Multiple pulses with broadband spectrum generation are experimentally obtained in passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring lasers based on nonlinear polarization rotation, which is achieved by incorporating a length of highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber in the laser cavity. The temporal and spectral dynamic behaviors of multipulse bunching states are demonstrated. The maximum spectral width and flatness are attained when the continuous-wave component is suppressed under appropriate polarization states and pump powers.

Abstract:The operation of a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring laser in two-color pulse mode has been experimentally observed. The experiments demonstrate that the wavelengths of two-color pulses can be switched among three wavelength bands. Through carefully controlling the polarization states of the laser cavity, various modulation patterns of the two-color pulses are obtained, which are due to the interaction of two different-wavelength pulses. Single-and three-color pulses are also observed. Multiwavelength oscillation is ascribed to the wavelength-dependent transmission induced by birefringence, and can synchronously mode-lock through nonlinear polarization rotation. Abstract:We report dark–bright pulse pair generation from the ytterbium doped fiber laser mode-locked by cascaded nonlinear multimode interference (MMI) effect under an all-normal dispersion configuration. The MMI is implemented in a step index single mode–multimode–single mode fiber structure. The combination of two MMI structures, acting like a saturable absorber, has been used for stable mode-locking operation in the resonator. By adjusting the polarization controller attached to one of the MMI structure, stable dark–bright pulses are observed at fundamental, second and third harmonic repetition rates. The optical spectrum of the dark–bright pulses is doubly peaked at 1036.6 and 1040.6 nm with a spectral width ∼0.7 nm. The width of the dark pulses varied from 72 to 50 ns and that of the bright pulses from 30 to 14 ns when the pump power is increased from 102 to 170 mW at the fundamental repetition rate mode-locking. The darkness of the dark and intensity of bright pulses increase with the pump power. Dark and bright pulses in the pair are resolved by placing a polarizing component confirming their vector nature.

Abstract:Two mode-lock regimes are observed experimentally and theoretically in the all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers: strong-and weak-modulation regimes. The pulse properties of these two regimes are investigated and summarized. The weak-modulation regime provides stable mode-locked pulses with picosecond pulse duration and broad spectrum linewidth. It well fits the chirped-pulse amplification as a seed source. An all-fiber all-normal-dispersion fiber ring laser is established. Stable mode-locked pulses with a pulse duration of 75 ps and a linewidth of 17.8 nm are obtained. The experimental results have a good agreement with the weak-modulation regime predicted in theory. Abstract:A dual-wavelength bright-dark pulse pair has been experimentally demonstrated in a mode-locked fiber laser based on thulium-doped fiber (TDF). By appropriately adjusting the polarization state, the dual-wavelength bright-dark pulse pairs with fundamental frequency of 20.56 MHz can be successfully obtained under the pump power ranging from 150 to 500 mW. The largest pulse energy is 2.84 nJ, and the conversion efficiency exceeds 10%. The generation mechanism of the bright-dark pulse pair in the cavity is primarily attributed to the cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced by the interaction of the bright soliton and dark soliton locating at different wavebands. Additionally, the dynamics of the bright-dark pulse pair is influenced by the polarization effect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a bright-dark pulse pair laser employing TDF as the saturable absorber (SA). Its superiority for mode-locking has been fully proved, making it enormous potential in the fields of ultrafast lasers and nonlinear optics. Furthermore, this pulsed laser may offer a novel path for the development of high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:We investigate the conversion of mode locking of bright pulses, dark pulses and dark-bright pulses in an Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on a Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films saturable absorber (SA) experimentally. When the pump power is 150 mW, by changing the polarization controller (PC) to change the polarization state in the laser cavity, we observed the bright pulse trains, the dark pulse trains and the dark-bright pulses trains in turn. All pulse interval are about 58 ns, and the repetition frequency of pulse is 1.7 MHz. The study provides a method for the conversion among bright pulses, dark pulses and dark-bright pulses.
Performance optimization of passive mode-locked fiber ring laser

Abstract:In this paper, firstly simulation program is used to simulate the performance of a passive mode-locked fiber ring laser. The result of the simulation shows how the two phenomena dispersion and nonlinearity affect the performance of a passive mode-locked ring laser. Hence, the performance of the passive mode-locked fiber ring laser can be optimized by setting proper dispersion and nonlinearity values. After that, a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) ring laser is constructed to verify the conclusions of the simulation. The conclusion from experiment matches the conclusion from simulations. Hence, the way to optimize the performance of the laser is found out and verified. Last but not least, during experiment part, the best pulse is obtained with pulse width 0.486ps, pulse bandwidth 5×107 GHz, pulse peak power 36.55 W and pulse power 315µW.

Abstract:Triple different operation regimes like passive Q-switched (PQS), Q-switched mode-locking (QSML) and continuous-wave mode-locking (CWML) are experimentally observed as progressive pulse dynamics in a mode-locked fiber laser, which is constructed with several-meters of cascaded small-core erbium/bismuth co-doped fiber (EBCF) to engineer the cavity loss modulation. The pulse fission evolution from PQS to QSML to CWML operation is flexibly achieved through pump power variation as the only control parameter at fixed polarization orientation. Output characteristics in all triple operation regimes are studied in detail and particularly the pulse transitional process between PQS and QSML is reported experimentally for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The laser pulse formation criteria for different operation regimes are also theoretically analyzed. The obtained results and analysis disclose the complete pulses evolution process from PQS to QSML to CWML operation, which contribute to further understanding of the complex laser pulses evolution dynamics and formation mechanism in a passively mode-locked fiber laser.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ a symmetrical graded index multimode fiber-step index multimode fiber-graded index multimode fiber (GIMF-SIMF-GIMF) structure as artificial saturable absorber to achieve mode-locked operation in an Erbium-doped fiber laser. After optimizing the cavity length, pump power and orientation of polarization controller, noise-like pulse (NLP) is built in anomalous dispersion region experimentally. It is worth noting that except for the traditional NLP, a special NLP with unique features is obtained whose temporal and spectral properties are different from the known case on NLP reported before. According to the experimental results, we also acquire and compare properties of subpulse within NLP envelope with the change of pump power. Last but not least, harmonic of the peculiar NLP is found under appropriate cavity conditions.

Abstract:Different polarization dynamic states in an unidirectional, vector, Yb-doped fiber ring laser have been observed. A rich variety of dynamic states, including group velocity locked polarization domains and their splitting into regularly distributed multiple domains, polarization locked square pulses and their harmonic mode locking counterparts, and dissipative soliton resonances have all been observed with different operating parameters. We have also shown experimentally details of the conditions under which polarization-domain-wall dark pulses and bright square pulses form.

Abstract:Multi-pulse dynamic patterns have been experimentally documented in a passively mode-locked (PML) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser using an Sb2S3-PVA saturable absorber (SA). The fundamental mode-locking operation with a repetition rate of ~3.22 MHz, a pulse width of ~2 ns, an SNR of ~50 dB and a peak power over 200 W, was achieved under pump power from 280 to 360 mW with appropriate polarization states introduced by the polarization controllers (PCs). By rotating the orientation of intra-cavity PCs carefully and slowly at a pump power of 350 mW, it was found that a multi-pulse bunch was transformed gradually from a single-pulse to a twelve-pulse bunch, with several intermediate transition states of multi-pulse bunches being observed. In addition, other characteristic modes including disordered multi-pulses and soliton rains have been experimentally observed by meticulously adjusting polarization of PCs at a pump power of 350 mW. Our systematic study clearly demonstrated that Sb2S3 has promising potential as an effective SA for generating different operation states of multi-pulses in PML anomalous-dispersion EDF lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the effects of pump power and polarization state on the evolution of bright-dark pulses (BDPs) in a figure-eight passively mode-locked thulium/holmium co-doped fiber laser (THDFL) using nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) technology. As the pump power increases from 0.5 W to 1 W, the BDPs are separated and exhibit a linear increase in the time interval between the bright pulse (BP) and dark pulse (DP), which roughly corresponds to the reciprocal of the modulation frequency in the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. Additionally, the polarization state in the cavity is altered by adjusting the polarization controller (PC), and the central wavelength of spectrum, pulse waveform, and full width at half maximum ( FWHM ) of BDPs in different states are presented.

Probing the Mode-Locking Pattern in the Parameter Space of a Figure-9 Laser

Abstract:Due to the many available cavity configurations, a generalized approach for identifying the optimal operating state of a Figure-9 mode-locked laser has proved a challenge. In this Letter, we probe the output pulsation states of an exemplar Figure-9 laser by meticulously scanning its parameter space. Regions corresponding to mode-locked operations are identified periodically in the map of the output states. We correlate these regions to a set of band-like cavity transmission functions that fundamentally allow ultra-short pulse formation. Interestingly, a clear correlation between the mode-locking pattern and the cavity configuration is observed. For example, with the decrease of the fiber loop symmetry in the cavity, half of the solutions in the mode-locking pattern are found to transit to forbidden states. Numerical calculations based on the Jones matrix are used to explain the experimental observations. In addition, the dynamic change of the map of output states is illustrated by using a setup with an automatic algorithm. Our results provide a visually-rich yet simple way for evaluating and optimizing a Figure-9 laser.

Abstract:Transition from a gain-guided soliton (GGS) to a fully developed noise-like pulse (NLP) is numerically demonstrated in fiber lasers operated in the normal dispersion regime, which explains well the experimental observation of spectrum evolution that the bottom of the averaged spectrum gradually broadens with pump power increasing. Numerical results suggest that the transition could also happen under the condition of cavity linear phase delay bias change with fixed pump power. It is demonstrated that the peak power clamping effect and the normal dispersion are the key factors leading to the spectrum evolution. In addition, intermittent meta-stable states between GGS and NLP can be obtained when the cavity dispersion is chosen at small normal dispersion.

Abstract:Nonlinear polarization rotation is used to compress pulses or suppress supermode noise in mode-locked fiber lasers at different situations. In this letter, we propose a novel method to simultaneously realize the above two effects by exploiting nonlinear polarization rotation in actively mode-locked fiber ring laser at a special state. A simple model derived by theoretical analysis is given to explain this phenomenon. We have also investigated the different transmission situations of nonlinear polarization rotation in the 10-GHz actively mode-locked fiber ring laser. Experimental observations agree well with theoretical predictions.
