Abstract:We report the experimental observation of dark rectangular noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a novel figure-nine fiber laser based on a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. By strengthening the nonlinear and birefringent effects in the cavity, the fundamental and high-order harmonics of dark rectangular NLPs are achieved with net anomalous dispersion. The dynamics of dark rectangular NLP formation and the spectral evolution with pump power are experimentally investigated. The results demonstrated an interesting operation regime of the fiber laser, which will contribute to enrich the dynamics of mode-locked pulses.

Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.

Disagreement on the formation mechanism proposed in this communication, we would like to indicate a more accurate explanation in order to clarify some potential misunderstanding on dark pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract: We investigate the buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse (QS-NLP) driven by slow gain dynamics in a microfiber-based passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. Based on shot-to-shot tracing of the transient optical spectra and qualitatively reproduced numerial simulation, we demonstrate that slow gain dynamics is deeply involved in the onset of such complex temporal and spectral instabilities of QS-NLP. The proposed dynamic model in this work could contribute to deeper insight of such nonlinear dynamics and transient dynamics simulation in ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate various low-amplitude sub-pulses releasing from the rectangular-shaped noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a passively mode-locked fiber laser. Via incorporating a several hundred meters highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) in the cavity, a series of continuous wave (CW) components are observed in the output optical spectrum, and sub-pulses formation results from the interactions among the CW components and the random ultrashort pulses in NLPs wave packet. A novel type of harmonic sub-pulses with 952.5874 MHz repetition rate is achieved, corresponding to the around 2994th harmonic of the fundamental cavity frequency. The obtained results contribute to further understanding the nature and formation mechanism of sub-pulses in NLPs regime.

Abstract:Noise-like pulses (NLP) are extremely sought after in many fields. Here, we experimentally and numerically investigated the generation of noise-like pulses in an all-normal-dispersion fiber laser with weak spectrum filtering. With the insertion of the grating as a tunable spectrum filter, the laser operates at a stable dissipative soliton state with a 3.84 ps duration. Replacing the grating with a mirror, NLPs with double-scale intensity autocorrelation trace is ultimately attained. Numerical simulations are performed in detail and demonstrated that with the absence of a spectrum filter, the stable state cannot be established but form the random pulse cluster. The random pulse cluster achieves dynamic stability with suitable feedback, and the NLP is ultimately generated. The NLP here is directly evolved by the initial noise, and no other states occur during its evolution. These explorations could deepen the understanding of NLP and enrich the complex dynamics of the ANDi ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we demonstrate the generation and real-time dynamics of noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a 1.7 μm ultrafast thulium-doped fiber laser with all-fiber structure. NLPs with a central wavelength of ∼ 1742.5 nm and a 3-dB spectral width of ∼ 10.95 nm could be observed with pulse energy up to 4.19 nJ. The dynamic characteristics of NLPs were explored by using time-stretch dispersive Fourier transformation technology, which shows that the NLPs actually consist of many chaotic small pulse envelopes with random and changeable energies. These experimental results indicate that NLPs are the intrinsic features of fiber lasers and hold significant importance for further academic research, which can contribute to the development and application of 1.7 μm fiber laser in fields such as biomedicine and short-range remote sensing.

Abstract:We experimentally report the dynamics of multi-soliton patterns noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a passively mode-locked fiber laser, which the pulse duration can be linearly tuned from 8.21 ns to 128.23 ns by 2.936 ns / 10 mW. Benefiting from the drastically strengthened nonlinear effects in the cavity and the high gain amplification in the unidirectional ring (UR), the transformation from rectangular-shaped NLP to Gaussian-shaped NLP is experimentally achieved. Versatile multi-soliton patterns are observed in NLP regime for the first time, namely, single-scale soliton clusters, high-order harmonic mode-locking, and localized chaotic multiple pulses. In particular, the spectrum evolution with pump power and spectrum stability in 2 hours are also monitored. The obtained results demonstrate the rectangular-shaped NLP can fully transform into Gaussian-shaped NLP, and the multi-soliton patterns can exist in the NLP regime, which contributes to further understanding the nature and mechanism of the NLP in a passively mode-locked fiber laser. Abstract:In this paper, we employ a symmetrical graded index multimode fiber-step index multimode fiber-graded index multimode fiber (GIMF-SIMF-GIMF) structure as artificial saturable absorber to achieve mode-locked operation in an Erbium-doped fiber laser. After optimizing the cavity length, pump power and orientation of polarization controller, noise-like pulse (NLP) is built in anomalous dispersion region experimentally. It is worth noting that except for the traditional NLP, a special NLP with unique features is obtained whose temporal and spectral properties are different from the known case on NLP reported before. According to the experimental results, we also acquire and compare properties of subpulse within NLP envelope with the change of pump power. Last but not least, harmonic of the peculiar NLP is found under appropriate cavity conditions.

Abstract:Noise-like pulses (NLPs) are relatively long (nanosecond or sub-nanosecond) wave packets exhibiting a fine inner structure of sub-picosecond pulses with varying amplitude and duration. The spectral domain of the NLPs has a wide wavelength envelope that exhibits highly variable wavelength emission intensity. An optical spectrum analyzer provides pseudo-stable, low-coherence, flat, and broadband spectral information of NLP, which then superimposed recording hundreds of thousands of NLP spectra. Therefore, NLPs can be widely applied in optical metrology, low-coherence spectral interferometry, spectral-domain optical coherent tomography, optical sensing and measurement, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and ablation threshold analysis, micro machining, and supercontinuum. This report mainly introduces some recent achievements in NLP fiber lasers. The research mainly includes the influence of reverse saturable absorption on the formation of NLPs, the generation of wide-spectrum NLP, the splitting of NLP, and the controllable generation of NLPs.

Abstract:The beam profiles of multimode mode-locked fiber lasers are highly multimode, the speckled beam profiles limit their potential application. To improve the beam profiles of multimode mode-locked fiber lasers, we proposed an all-fiber figure-8 multimode cavity and experimentally demonstrated the generation of noise-like pulses (NLPs) and beam self-cleaning of NLPs in the cavity at 1.5 μm. The laser was mode locked by a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, an Er/Yb co-doped fiber provided gain, and 50 m OM4 fiber introduced enough nonlinear phase shift difference. The scheme generated NLPs with 159 mW average power, 2.78 MHz repetition rate and 57.19 nJ pulse energy. The packet duration of the NLPs increased from 0.61 ns to 2.99 ns when the pump power was increased from 2 W to 9 W. Nonlinear beam self-cleaning with a near Gaussian beam profile output was achieved in the multimode fiber laser. The M 2 was measured to be 2.41 at the pulse energy of 6.83 nJ. We also obtained spatiotemporal mode-locked pulses with 1.03 ps duration and speckled beam profiles. This is the first experimental demonstration of NLPs in multimode fiber lasers, and beam self-cleaning of NLPs was observed for the first time. The results enriched nonlinear dynamics in multimode fiber lasers.

Abstract:Transition from a gain-guided soliton (GGS) to a fully developed noise-like pulse (NLP) is numerically demonstrated in fiber lasers operated in the normal dispersion regime, which explains well the experimental observation of spectrum evolution that the bottom of the averaged spectrum gradually broadens with pump power increasing. Numerical results suggest that the transition could also happen under the condition of cavity linear phase delay bias change with fixed pump power. It is demonstrated that the peak power clamping effect and the normal dispersion are the key factors leading to the spectrum evolution. In addition, intermittent meta-stable states between GGS and NLP can be obtained when the cavity dispersion is chosen at small normal dispersion.

Abstract:Period multiplication is a bifurcation phenomenon, which depicts a typical roadmap from periodic steady-state to chaos. There has been particular interest in studying period multiplication properties in mode-locked lasers, but the mechanism behind is still not well-studied. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a figure-of-9 fiber laser which can generate period-multiplied pulses with long-term stability. Further theoretical insight is obtained by numerical simulations, which clearly shows that the ratio between the distances of each bifurcation point is approaching the Feigenbaum constant. We believe that the laser design presented here could be a stable and reliable ultrafast optical platform to study bifurcation and chaos, which also has potential applications in optical frequency comb and all-optical modulation.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a direct generation of high-energy dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) and rectangular noise-like pulse (NLP) in a figure-9 thulium-holmium-doped mode-locked fiber laser. The pulse duration and average output power of the DSR can be tuned from 33.5 ns to 144.6 ns, and from 100.25 mW to 677.5 mW, respectively. The maximum of pulse energy is 713.2 nJ without wave breaking at pump power of 6.7 W, which is the highest energy of DSR in the region of 2 mu m, to the best of our knowledge. Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. The thermally induced dephasing effect is found to be the key issue for improving second-harmonic efficiency. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, we experimentally observed a novel quasi-coherent noise-like pulse (NLP) in a simplified nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking fiber laser when appropriate polarization was maintained for the lasing light through a three-dimensional rotatable polarization beam splitter inside the cavity. The degree of first-order coherence was evaluated after an interferogram measurement. The evolution of the measured shot-to-shot spectrum revealed that the NLPs possess quasi-coherence. Self-starting ultrafast soliton pulses switching to quasi-coherent NLPs at higher pump power levels were due to the preservation of the soliton features, mainly the Kelly sidebands in the spectrum. Quasi-coherent NLPs with average power of 56.58 mW and 10.4% slope efficiency were achieved with single pulse energy of 3.22 nJ.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the nature of pulsating noise-like pulses (NLPs) in a fiber laser based on the nonlinear optical loop mirror. By adjusting the intra-cavity polarization, three types of pulsating NLPs can be obtained in the cavity. By utilizing the dispersive Fourier transformation technique, the real-time evolution dynamics of NLP pulsation have been investigated in detail. Different from the conventional pulsating behavior, the NLPs undergo remarkable and periodical variations in their width with slight changes in pulse peak powers during pulsation process. We speculate that the wavelength-dependent gain saturation is involved in the pulsating NLP evolution. Quasi-periodic energy oscillations are associated with cyclic generation and subsequent walkoff of wavelength-shifted components, resulting in the different pulsating dynamics of NLP. Moreover, during pulsation process, the NLP splitting could happen with the increasing of energy. All these findings will help to complement our understanding of NLP pulsation in a fiber laser.
