Abstract:The SrMgB6O11 glass samples were synthesized by a solid-state reaction route. Luminescence of SrMgB6O11:Eu2+,Mn2+ shows a broad blue emission band and a red emission band, which originates from Eu2+ occupying the Sr2+ sites and Mn2+ occupying the Mg2+ sites, respectively. The obtained samples exhibit a tunable color emission under an ultraviolet source by adjusting the relative proportion of Eu2+/Mn2+ properly. The energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ in SrMgB6O11 is observed to be very effective. The optimal composition of SrMgB6O11: 0.02Eu(2+), 0.12Mn(2+) generates white light, indicating that the obtained glass would be a good candidate for white light-emitting diodes applications. Abstract:Crystal structure tailoring is a commonly used method for tuning the luminescence of phosphors. This study mainly aims at luminescent spectra tuning of Sr1-xBaxAl2Si2O8:Eu2+ phosphors by substitution of Ba for Sr ions. The phase composition was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and the crystal structure was determined by using the Rietveld refinement method. The excitation and emission spectra, diffuse reflectance spectra, and thermal quenching were also investigated in detail. The results show that Sr1-xBaxAl2Si2O8:Eu(2+)phosphors can form a series of continuous solid solutions in the range from 0 to 0.75. With the increase in x value, the emission spectra show an obvious redshift from 415 to 450 nm. The emission redshift plays an important role in enabling Sr1-xBaxAl2Si2O8:Eu2+ to be used as a standard blue phosphor for application in white-light-emitting diodes.(C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A series of quaternary nitride solid solutions with a general formula of Sr1-xCaxYSi4N7:Eu2+ (1 atom%) were synthesized by the carbothermal reduction and nitridation (CRN) method. The XRD patterns confirm the formation of a solid solution of Sr1-xCaxYSi4N7:Eu2+ (0 <= x <= 0.5). With an increase in x, the emission spectra shift from 540 nm to 564 nm under n-UV excitation. In addition, the temperature dependence of the PL intensity was investigated. The thermal stability is comparable to that of the commercial (Ba,Sr)(2)SiO4:Eu2+ phosphor. All the results indicate that the solid solution Sr1-xCaxYSi4N7:Eu2+ UV LEDs for solid-state lighting.

Abstract:A series of nitride solid solutions (Ca1-x,Sr-x)(16)Si17N34:0.03Eu(2+) were successfully synthesized through the conventional solid-state method. The electronic crystal structure and photoluminescence characteristics were studied in detail. The excitation in the near-ultraviolet and blue regions of the samples shows a broad band in the 250-550 nm range, which can match well with the n-UV and blue lighting-emitting diode chips. Partial substitution of Ca2+ by Sr2+ results in a redshift emission, and the impacts of Sr content on the luminescence were researched in detail. Under 410 nm excitation, the phosphor exhibited tunable red emission from 616 to 653 nm by changing the concentration of Sr2+. Based on the crystal data, the emission can be fitted into three distinguished Gaussian components, which are attributed to the different Eu2+ luminescence centers occupied in three disparate Ca2+ (Sr2+) lattice sites. The temperature quenching property of the phosphor was also investigated, and the good thermal stability of the phosphors was analyzed through the activation energy for thermal quenching. And the obtained CCT values from 2642 to 2817 K are suitable for a warm white light region. All the results indicated that the phosphors have possible application in the warm white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:A series of SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) (0.005 ≤x≤ 0.05) phosphors were successfully synthesized through a pressureless, facile, and efficient solid state route. The crystal structure, band structure, and their photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. The phosphors exhibit rod shape morphology with a uniform Eu(2+) distribution. Under n-UV excitation the emission spectra shift from 477 to 497 nm with an increase of Eu(2+) concentration. The concentration quenching mechanism of Eu(2+) emission was dominated by the dipole-dipole interaction. The thermal stability is comparable to that of the commercial Ba2SiO4:Eu(2+) phosphor. The phosphor also exhibits high current saturation and high resistance under low voltage electron bombardment. All the results indicate that the SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) phosphors can be considered as candidates for application in both white LEDs and FEDs.

Abstract:A series of quaternary nitride solid solutions with a general formula of Sr1−xCaxLiAl3N4:0.5%Eu2+ was synthesized by a solid‐state reaction method. The experimental results showed that a proper amount of Ca‐doping can improve the crystallinity and the photoluminescence properties of the produced phosphors. Rietveld refinement showed that the volume of the unit cell shrank with the increase of Ca substitution for Sr, which resulted in a red shift of the emission spectra from 654 to 665 nm under blue excitation at 475 nm. Rietveld refinement and CASTPE calculations suggested that Ca2+ ions prefer to occupy the smaller Sr(I) sites in the crystal lattice, which increases the amount of Eu2+ ions in Sr(II) sites and enables the tuning of the chromaticity coordinates of the obtained phosphors. The thermal stability of the produced phosphors is better than that of commercial Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphor. The experimental results qualify the solid‐solution Sr1−xCaxLiAl3N4:0.5%Eu2+ for consideration as a potential candidate for application in white LEDs.

Abstract:Sr2.92-xTmxSiO5:Eu2+ (x = 0–0.09) orange emitting phosphors for white LED were prepared by solid-state method. The crystal structure and morphology of Sr2.92-xTmxSiO5 were determined by XRD and SEM. The phosphor showed strong absorption spectra and can be excited by near-ultraviolet (NUV) light in the range of 200−550 nm which matched well with the NUV light-emitting diode (LED) chips. The emission spectra showed asymmetric band around 585 nm under NUV and assigned to the 4f65d-4f7 transition of Eu2+ occupied Sr2+ sites in the host lattice. It is observed that 5d electron state of Eu2+ which easily influenced by the crystal field was not changed after Tm3+ co-doping in the host. Enhanced emission intensity, improved thermostability and fluorencence decay time have been made via crystal chemical unequivalence substitution of Tm3+ in Sr2+ site. The energy transfer took place between the Tm3+ and Eu2+ activator, the underlying mechanisms of enhanced luminescence and decay fluorescence properties by energy transfer were analyzed.

Abstract:Cation substitution dependent tunable bimodal photoluminescence behavior was observed in the Ca3-xSrx(PO4)(2):Eu2+ (0 = x = 2) solid solution phosphors. The Rietveld refinements verified the phase purity and whitlockite type crystal structure of the solid solutions. The tunable photoluminescence evolution was studied as a function of strontium content, over the composition range 0.1 <= x <= 2. In addition to the emission band peak at 416 nm in Ca-3(PO4)(2):Eu2+, the substitution of Ca2+ by Sr2+ induced the emerging broad-band peak at 493-532 nm. A dramatic red shift of the emission peak located in the green-yellow region was observed on an increase of x in the samples with 0.75 <= x <= 2.00. The two emission bands could be related to the EuOn-Ca9 and EuOn-Ca9-xSrx emitting blocks, respectively. The values for the two kinds of emitting blocks in the solid solutions can be fitted well with the observed intensity evolution of the two emission peaks.

Abstract:Solid-solution BaxSr1−xAl2O4 doped with Eu2+ phosphors with various x were successfully synthesized via conventional solid-state method. The structural properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction and the luminescent properties were studied via photoluminescence spectra. We observed an obvious phase transition in the solid-solution BaxSr1−xAl2O4 host, and the turning point located at around x = 0.45, which fitted well with our calculated result based on DFT approach. In addition, the photoluminescence emission spectra witnessed a non-monotonous shift of peak's position with various compositions. The non-monotonicity was not due to structural anomaly as all the samples were confirmed to be solid-solutions by XRD measurements. Our analysis suggests that the non-monotonous spectral shift is mainly determined by the site Eu2+ ions opt to occupy in the solid-solution.

Abstract:A novel green emitted phosphor Li2Sr1−xBaxSiO4:Eu2+ (LSBS:Eu) has been synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. Its crystal structure and grain morphology have been investigated by a powder X-ray diffractometer and a scanning electronic microscope, respectively. A green emission peak around 566 nm was observed under the excitation ranged from 225 to 500 nm, which covers the emission spectra of blue and near UV LEDs. The optimal emission intensity was obtained when the Ba content was 0.6 and Eu2+ doping level was 0.003 mol. Furthermore, the investigation of the temperature dependence of luminescence and quantum efficiency indicate that LSBS:Eu phosphors are highly thermally stable and energy saving. The lifetime decay curves and chromaticity coordinates were also obtained. The results show that Li2Sr1−xBaxSiO4:Eu2+ would be a promising green phosphor candidate for UV-chip-based multiphosphor converted white LEDs.

Abstract:A series of apatite solid solution phosphors Ca2+xLa8-x(SiO4)(6-x)(PO4)(x)O-2: Eu2+ (x = 0,2,4,6) were synthesized by a conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction. The phase purity was examined using XRD, XPS and XRF. The crystal structure information, such as the concentration, cell parameters and occupation rate, was analyzed using a Rietveld refinement, demonstrating that the Eu2+ activated the Ca2La8(SiO4)(6)O-2 and Ca8La2(PO4)(6)O-2 to form continuous solid solution phosphors. Different behaviors of luminescence evolution in response to structural variation were verified among the series of phosphors. Two kinds of Eu2+ ion sites were proved using low temperature PL spectra (8k) and room temperature decay curves. The substitution of large La3+ ions by small Ca2+ ions induced a decreased crystal field splitting of the Eu2+ ions, which caused an increase in emission energy from the 5d excited state to the 4f ground state and a resultant blue-shift from 508 nm to 460 nm. Therefore, with the crystal structure evolution, the emitted color of the series of phosphors could be tuned from green to blue by adjusting the ratio of Ca/La.

Tendentious multiple sites occupation towards white light emission in single-phase Ba2(1-/3)Ca(1-/3)Sr B2Si4O14:Eu2+ phosphors

Abstract:Site preferences of Eu2+ ions on the Ba2+ sites and the Ca2+ sites were discovered in the mixed cation borosilicate Ba2CaB2Si4O14 (BCBSO). Eu2+ ions are more likely to locate on the Ba2+ sites over the Ca2+ sites according to the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation and the photoluminescence spectrum analysis. The emission band centered at 408 nm was confirmed to be generated from the Eu2+ ions located on the Ba2+ sites, while the emission band centered at 548 nm was considered to be generated from the Eu2+ ions on the Ca2+ sites. Dual sites occupation results in a collective emission band covering 380 nm–780 nm in BCBSO:Eu phosphors. By further doping with Sr2+ ions, crystal environment of the luminescence centers could be well modulated, resulting in the tunable emission from yellow to white under UV excitation. The photoluminescence quantum yield was significantly improved from 17.9% to 36.8%. Finally, a series of white LEDs with tunable CCT (from 5132 K to 3402 K) and high Ra (reach up to 89.6) were obtained using the Ba2(1-y/3)Ca(1-y/3)Sr y B2Si4O14:0.03Eu single-phase white light emission phosphors.

Governing the crystallographic sites for tuning Eu2+ emission in an apatite oxyfluoride host to be applied for superior white light emitting diodes

Abstract:Single white light-emitting phosphors for near-UV-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are the best alternatives to tricolour phosphor blends and blue light converted yellow-emitting garnets. Nevertheless, achieving white light with elevated colour rendering (CRI) from a single-phase phosphor activated with a lone activator ion is a major challenge. This study aimed at the generation of white light from a single-phase composition activated only with europium. The study started with structural evaluations of Eu3+-activated Ca4La6Si6O24F2 phosphors using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Eu3+ photoluminescence to elucidate the local environment of rare-earth ions and the symmetric nature of the lattice sites. Ca4La6Si6O24F2 crystallized in the hexagonal P63/m space group. The predominant 5D0-7F2 electric dipole transition at 614 nm, and the non-splitting as well as the zero-shifting behaviour of 5D0-7F0 at 578 nm, suggested that the rare-earth ionic substitutions preferably took place at the larger asymmetric sites. Introducing Sr2+ ions in Ca4La6Si6O24F2:Eu3+/Eu2+ that is synthesized under a reducing atmosphere suppressed Eu3+ emission. From the optimized Ca1.98Sr1.98La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+, a sequence of M2+-codoped (M = Mg/Ba) Ca1.98Sr1.98La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+ phosphors were further developed. The substitutions of Mg2+ and Ba2+ altered the crystal field by changing the lattice parameters. The Mg2+ -doped samples showed a blue-shift from 520 nm (Mg2+ = 0) to 471 nm (Mg2+ = 1.0), whereas the Ba2+-doped compositions showed a red-shift from 520 nm (Ba2+ = 0) to 536 nm (Ba2+ = 1.2). The change of symmetry owing to the Mg2+/Ba2+ substitution could have led to the centroid shift, which was responsible for the blue- or red-shift of the emission spectra. The XRD of Ca1.38Sr1.38La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+,1.2Ba2+ indicated a Ba2+-induced lattice site expansion. Keeping this in view, the Eu2+ ions concentrations were further enhanced from 0.04 to 0.3, and the resultant photoluminescence was further enhanced and red-shifted. The optimized sample showed better intensity compared with the commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ and exhibited decent photoluminescence above 70% at 150 °C as compared with that at room temperature. Finally, several prototype WLEDs were fabricated using the single phosphor Ca1.365Sr1.365La6Si6O24F2:0.07Eu2+,1.2Ba2+ with near-UV and violet-LED chips. The outcomes indicated the promising nature of this single-composition phosphor for indoor lighting.

Abstract:Sr3B2O6:Dy3+, Eu3+ single-matrix white-light-emitting materials are prepared using the high-temperature solid-state method. The microstructure, emission spectrum, energy transfer mechanism, and color brightness of the samples are studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectrophotometry, and color coordinate (CIE) calculations. Furthermore, the effects of the synthesis temperature, holding time, rare-earth element doping amount, and charge compensation agent on the luminescence intensity of the samples are investigated. Results show that the luminescent effect of the sample containing Na+ as the charge compensator is better than that of the sample containing K+. When the concentrations of Dy3+ and Eu3+ are 2 and 3%, respectively, the calcination temperature is 700°C, and the holding time is 3 h, the samples exhibit the best luminescence performance and the color coordinates are in the white-light region, indicating a good white-light luminescent material.

Abstract:Single-component white-light phosphors can overcome many of the problems associated with multiple emitting components, such as intrinsic color balance, device complications and high cost. Here, we demonstrate a novel type of single-component white-light Sr2-xV2-O-7:Eu-x phosphor with dual-luminescence centers (x = 0-0.24) for white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Due to the charge transfer absorption (V5+O42- -> V4+O42-), the white light spectra they emit consist of both a broad photoluminescence band centered at about 518 nm, which would be from VO4 groups with approximate C-3v symmetry, and a sharp characteristic spectrum (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) at about 611 nm from the doped Eu3+ ion at the Sr2+ sites in the Sr2V2O7 crystal. Moreover, to explain the broad emission spectra of these phosphors, a 10 x 10 energy matrix was successfully established based on an effective operator Hamiltonian, including free ion and crystal field interactions. For the first time, the broad emission spectra for VO4 groups with the approximate C-3v symmetry were calculated using a complete diagonalization (of energy matrix) method. The fitting and experimental values are close to each other, powerfully demonstrating the nature of this broad emission and the feasibility of using the complete diagonalization method to study the phosphors for white LEDs. Abstract:Manipulating the distribution of rare earth activators in multiple cations' sites of phosphor materials is an essential step to obtain tunable emission for the phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). However, it remains the challenge to realize the photoluminescence tuning in the single-phased phosphor with single activator, due to the uncertain location of doped ions and adjustable crystallographic sites. Herein we reported the β-Ca3(PO4)2-type solid solution phosphors (Ca8.98- xSr x)MgK(PO4)7:2%Eu2+ ( x = 0-8.98) and the effects of replacing Ca2+ by Sr2+ ions on the phase structures and color-tunable emission were investigated in detail. Tunable color emission has been realized by manipulating the redistribution of Eu2+ ions among different cation sites with adjustable chemical environment, and the related mechanism on the local structures has been discussed. The high Ra (85) and low color temperature (CCT) (4465 K) values of the as-fabricated WLEDs lamp indicate that (Ca4.98Sr4)MgK(PO4)7:2%Eu2+ can act as a promising white-emitting phosphor for single-phased pc-WLEDs. This work provides a new insight into the tuning of the compositions and multiple activator sites toward single-phased white emission.
