Abstract:With the large-scale application of power batteries, a large number of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) will be formed in recent years. The improper disposal of spent LIBs will pose significant environmental pollution. LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM), as a typical type of LIBs cathodes material, are widely used and can be highly recycled. However, the existing hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recycling processes consume large amounts of energy and introduce serious secondary pollution. This work presents a simple straightforward direct regeneration process that uses urea solvothermal treatment followed by calcination to obtain urea-regenerated spent NCM (UR-S-NCM). Surprisingly, the specific capacity of the regenerated NCM of UR-S-NCM recovers completely and reaches 166 mAh/g, higher than that of fresh NCM (F-NCM) at 156 mAh/g. After 100 charge/ discharge cycles, the specific capacity of UR-S-NCM is 37 % higher than that of F-NCM at the same condition. Additionally, the CO2 emissions per kilogram of the regenerated UR-S-NCM are only 1.79 kg, about 31 % of pyrometallurgy and 48 % of hydrometallurgy, respectively. The surface smoothness, grain boundaries and layered structure of UR-S-NCM are recovered from S-NCM to the same situation of F-NCM. Smooth surface facilitates Li+ migration into and out of UR-S-NCM, grain boundaries reduction diminishes electrolyte corrosion, and the layered structure accommodates more Li+ compared to the spinel structure of S-NCM. This work provides an eco-friendly direct regeneration process and offers a new insight for LIBs regeneration.

Abstract:The direct regeneration of degraded cathode materials in spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective strategy to “make waste be wealth”. However, the microscopic regeneration mechanisms and kinetics for this process are almost elusive. In this paper, we attempt to fully extract the regeneration mechanisms during direct regeneration of degraded NCM 523 (LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2) materials in a multiscale manner. A series of in situ (TEM, SEM, synchrotron XPS) and ex situ (TEM & EDS tomography, electrochemical measurements) characterization techniques are used for establishing the complete physicochemical picture of NCM 523 regeneration. Important dynamical details across atomic-scale, nanoscale, microscale, and single-particle level including reverse transformation from rock salt to layered phase, healing of defects (pores and cracks), and valence transformations of metal ions are followed and discussed, which is further supplemented by systematical theoretical analysis as well as full-cell electrochemical tests. This study provides an in-depth understanding toward the direct regeneration of degraded cathode materials and may shed light on the future development and optimization of direct regeneration strategies.

Abstract:In this paper, a potential method for the closed-loop recovery and regeneration of cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is developed to greatly simplify the regeneration process, which successfully removes metal impurities from spent LIBs and synthesis of layered oxide LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials. First, the valuable metals (Ni, Co, Mn, and Li) in spent LIB materials are transformed into water-soluble ions based on the synergy between dl-malic acid and glucose. Subsequently, the residual Fe impurities are successfully decreased from the leaching solution by oxidation-precipitation. Prior to the synthesis process, valuable metal ions are immediately precipitated using oxalic acid as a precipitant from the leaching solution into Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3C2O4·nH2O with extremely uniform size particles. Furthermore, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials with an excellent crystal structure are successfully synthesized by adding Li2CO3 as the lithium source after roasting at 500 °C for 4 h and then at 950 °C for 12 h. The regenerated LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials demonstrate reliable electrochemical performance. This work clarifies a potential method for the closed-loop recovery resource sustainability of spent LIB materials.

Abstract:A closed-loop regeneration process for spent LiCoO2 has been successfully designed with prior synthesis of LiNixCoyMnzO2, by the authors. This research applies the methodology to lithium-ion battery anodes, using spent graphite from a decommissioned battery in a leaching process with 1.5 mol∙L−1 malic acid and 3% H2O2 alongside LiCoO2. The filtered graphite was separated, annealed in an argon atmosphere, and the filtrate was used to synthesize NCM cathode material. Characterization involved X-ray diffraction, EDX, and SEM techniques. The regenerated graphite (RG) showed a specific discharge capacity of 340.4 mAh/g at a 0.1C rate in the first cycle, dropping to 338.4 mAh/g after 55 cycles, with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.9%. CV and EIS methods provided further material assessment. In a related study, the SNCM111 synthesized from the leaching solution showed a specific discharge capacity of 131.68 mAh/g initially, decreasing to 115.71 mAh/g after 22 cycles.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are the core components of new energy vehicles. Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries resources is beneficial for the sustainable development of new energy vehicles. However, the current traditional recycling strategy has the disadvantages of high energy consumption and complex treatment process, which do not meet the requirements of green and energy saving. Here, we report a simpler and greener approach to regenerate spent cathode materials by preoxidation followed by a short annealing approach. The generated cathode material has a good crystal structure and lower Li/Ni mixing. Owing to the stable structure, the generated cathode material exhibits a capacity of 153.82 mA h g–1 at 1C over 2.8–4.3 V with retention reaching 94.74% after 100 cycles. β-NiOOH obtained by preoxidation is beneficial for transformation of the original layered structure in the subsequent short annealing process. The novel approach provides efficient and green ideas for efficient direct regeneration of spent cathode materials.

Abstract:With the widespread use of electric vehicles, it has attracted huge social concern to develop efficient technologies for the recycle of a large amount of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the future. In this work, a novel recycling approach has been exploited to regenerate a ternary cathode material (LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2) using valuable elements in spent LIBs including pretreatment, leaching, hightemperature calcination, and coprecipitation procedures. Based on the whole process analysis, above 97.9% transition-metal elements and 81.2% lithium element in the spent LIBs could be reused. The NCM-r was characterized by a series of physical and electrochemical measurements for comparison with commercial NCM-c. The initial discharge capacity of the NCM-r could reach up to 181 mA h.g(-1) (0.1C) at room temperature, and the retention of discharge capacity was 91.3% after 100 cycles. This approach is feasible for resynthesizing high nickel ternary material LiNixCoyMnzO2 from spent LIBs, contributing to both utilization of urban mine resources and sustainable industrialization.

Abstract:Battery recycling is indispensable for alleviating critical material shortages and enabling sustainable battery applications. However, current methods mostly focus on spent batteries, which not only require sophisticated disassembly and material extraction but also have unknown chemistries and states of health, resulting in high costs and extreme challenges to achieve regeneration. Here, we propose the direct recycling and effective regeneration of air-degraded LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathode directly from battery scraps generated during battery manufacturing. The NCM523 shows surface degradation only a few nanometers deep and accordingly can be regenerated without adding Li, achieving restored properties (170 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, 92.7% retention after 1000 cycles) similar to those of fresh commercial materials. EverBatt analysis shows that scrap recycling has a profit of $1.984 kg−1, which is ∼10 times higher than conventional recycling, making it practical and economical to rejuvenate slightly degraded electrode materials for sustainable battery manufacturing.

Abstract:Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide in the spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) contains a lot of lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese. However, how to effectively recover these valuable metals under the premise of reducing environmental pollution is still a challenge. In this work, a green, efficient, closed-loop direct regeneration technology is proposed to reconstruct LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathode materials from spent LIBs. Firstly, the failure mechanism of NCM523 cathode materials in the spent LIBs is analyzed deeply. It is found that the spent NCM523 material has problems such as the dissolution of lithium and transition metals, surface interface failure and structural transformation, resulting in serious deterioration of electrochemical performance. Then NCM523 material was directly regenerated by supplementing metal ions, granulation, ion doping and heat treatment. Meanwhile, PO43- polyanions were doped into the regenerated NCM material in the recovery process, showing excellent electrochemical performance with discharge capacity of 189.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C. The recovery process proposed in this study puts forward a new strategy for the recovery various lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (e.g., LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) and accelerates the industrialization of spent lithium ion battery recycling.

Abstract:Concerns over non-renewable metal resources and environmental degradation are growing as a result of the exponential increase of market dominance of Lithium (Li)-ion batteries in energy storage devices, for example electric automobile. As one of the leading materials of Li-ion battery—LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM), the regenerated technology of NCM has received lots of attention in recent years due to the extreme scarcity of transition metals. The regeneration strategies are innovatively divided into indirect regeneration strategy and direct regeneration strategy according to the damage of cathode material of NCM in the regeneration process. After introducing the pretreatment process and common leaching reagents, the co-precipitation and sol–gel indirect regeneration methods and their respective advantages and disadvantages are summarized. In contrast, based on the degradation mechanism of NCM cathode materials, solid-state and hydrothermal direct regeneration strategies are summed up. Further, some emerging direct regeneration strategies such as Li-based eutectic molten salt, novel coating strategies, and electrochemical methods are discussed. Finally, these methods are systematically summarized and compared, and the prospect of future NCM battery regeneration is proposed to accelerate the recovery and application of cathode materials on an industrial scale.

Abstract:The consumption of lithium-ion batteries raises raw material demand for and the pressure on ecological sustainability. Metals can be recovered in shorter paths while considerably boosting material use, hence selective recycling of specific elements is becoming a hotspot. This paper proposes a thermally-driven closed-loop recycling process for scrap LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathodes, in which Li is efficiently extracted by water leaching. Then, by combining the leaching residue with Li2CO3, a solid-phase synthesis is carried out, with Li being targeted to heal into Ni-Co-Mn-O to construct the layered structure. The electrochemical performance of the resynthesized cathode material is comparable to that of the commercial LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) material. During the thermal-driven conversion, solid-state processes can be observed. To ensure charge conservation, Li+ in the unstable layered structure is released and mixed with SO42- to produce Li2SO4, and lattice oxygen escapes and transforms with Ni2+ to generate NiO. For the resynthesized process, the spherical shape of Ni-Co-Mn-O is largely retained. Notably, sulfur is remained in the form of SO42- throughout the closed-loop process and is therefore free of contamination. The thermal-driven conversion recycling process revealed in this study will encourage researchers to ensure more efforts in efficient and selective recovery for sustainable energy storage of rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:The proliferation of energy storage and power devices has led to an explosion in the number of spent batteries needing regeneration or safe and sustainable disposal. However, traditional solid-phase and hydrometallurgical leaching approaches to regeneration are characterized by high energy consumption, long processing routes, and the generation of a lot of waste solvents. To solve these problems, in this paper, we report an efficient and low-energy strategy for regenerating high nickel LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 materials based on selective leaching that is effective even under non-optimal leaching conditions. Leaching repairs the collapsed crystal structure and removes the impurity phases of the spent LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2, and the solid–liquid mixture does not need complex treatment, making the process energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. The resynthesized single crystal LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 displays an initial specific discharge capacity of 179.2 mAh·g−1 and retains 90.7% of its capacity at 0.2C after 150 cycles, which is comparable to the performance of commercial materials. This method can accurately replenish the lithium lost from spent materials and repair the damaged crystal structure, improving lithium-ion transport and recycling the spent battery for industrial applications.

Abstract:The tremendous consumption of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) raises concern about sustainable resources especially for the valuable metals. Recycling valuable metals from spent LIBs is expected to meet the demand growth of LIBs. Herein, a novel approach combined with oxalic acid leaching, calcination relithiation, and annealing is proposed to regenerate spent LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathodes. This approach can reduce the recycling cost, accompanied with small energy consumption. Moreover, almost 98% of the valuable metals (Ni, Co, Mn) can be directly regenerated. The regenerated NCM523 cathode exhibits an initial capacity of 146.1 mAh g–1, with ∼85% capacity retention after 100 cycles. This work not only provides an efficient and simple method for recycling spent cathodes but also gives a new perspective of sustainable manufacturing of energy materials.

Abstract:The increase in the use of lithium-ion batteries has led to a rapid increase in the number of used Li-ion batteries. If these used lithium-ion batteries are not handled properly, they will result in environmental pollution and waste of valuable metal resources. In this study, spent lithium cobalt oxide electrode sheets were directly leached using d, l-malic acid and H2O2, and LiNi1/3-xCo1/3Mn1/ 3AlxO2 (x = 0.02, 0.04) was resynthesized by sol-gel method. Results show that the prepared materials exhibit typical layered structure, and the doping of Al3+ has a certain effect on inhibiting the mixing of cations. The synthesized LiNi1/3-0.04Co1/3Mn1/3Al0.04O2 maintains an excellent reversible discharge capacity of 148.1 mAhg−1 at a current density of 0.2 C after 100 cycles, which is higher than that of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2. The good performance of the regenerated positive electrode material indicates that the simple recovery and recycling process is feasible.

Closed-loop recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries based on selective sulfidation: An unconventional approach

Abstract:The facile recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has attracted considerable attention because of its great importance to environmental protection and resource utilization. A novel process is developed for cyclic utilization of spent LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM) batteries. The spent NCM was converted into water-soluble Li2CO3, acid-dissolved MnO, and nickel-cobalt sulfides through selective sulfidation, based on roasting condition optimization and thermodynamic calculation. More than 98 % of lithium is extracted preferentially from calcined NCM through water leaching, and over 99 % of manganese is extracted selectively from water leaching residue with H2SO4 solution of 0.4 mol/L in the absence of additional reductant. The nickel and cobalt sulfides were concentrated into the leaching residue without metal impurities. The obtained Li2CO3, MnSO4, and nickel-cobalt sulfides can be regenerated as new NCM, showing good electrochemical performance, and its discharge capacity is 169.8 mAh/g at 0.2C. After 100 cycles at 0.2C, the discharge specific capacity can still be maintained at 143.24 mAh/g, and its capacity retention ratio is as high as 92 %. An environmental assessment and economic evaluation indicate that the process is an economical and eco-friendly approach for green recycling of spent LIBs.

Abstract:With the rapid development of consumer electronics and electric vehicles (EV), a large number of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been generated worldwide. Thus, effective recycling technologies to recapture a significant amount of valuable metals contained in spent LIBs are highly desirable to prevent the environmental pollution and resource depletion. In this work, a novel recycling technology to regenerate a LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material from spent LIBs with different cathode chemistries has been developed. By dismantling, crushing, leaching and impurity removing, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (selected as an example of LiNixCoyMn(1−x−y)O2) powder can be directly prepared from the purified leaching solution via co-precipitation followed by solid-state synthesis. For comparison purposes, a fresh-synthesized sample with the same composition has also been prepared using the commercial raw materials via the same method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical measurements have been carried out to characterize these samples. The electrochemical test result suggests that the re-synthesized sample delivers cycle performance and low rate capability which are comparable to those of the fresh-synthesized sample. This novel recycling technique can be of great value to the regeneration of a pure and marketable LiNixCoyMn(1−x−y)O2 cathode material with low secondary pollution.

Abstract:The recycling and reuse of Ni, Co, and other rare metals from aged lithium-ion batteries have drawn much attention to the researchers, which can reduce the negative effect on the environment. In this work, a novel and facile regeneration method is proposed to obtain valuable metals Ni, Co, and Mn. The fresh LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode materials are regenerated via employing mixed acid leaching, oxalate co-precipitation, and solid-phase reaction. The regenerated LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode materials display an initial specific discharge capacity of 180.6 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C. The capacity retention is 86% after 100 cycles at the current density of 1 C. The recycling process in our work does not need complicated metal separation and has low processing costs. Self‐Reconstruction of Highly Degraded LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Towards Stable Single‐Crystalline Cathode

Abstract:The ever‐growing demand for resources sustainability has promoted the recycle of spent lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) to a strategic position. Direct recycle outperforms either hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical approaches due to the high added value and facile treatment processes. However, the traditional direct recycling technologies are only applicable for Ni‐poor/middle cathodes. Herein, we directly recycle of spent Ni‐rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (S‐NCM) to performance‐enhanced single‐crystalline cathode materials using a simple but effective LiOH‐NaCl molten salt. We systematically investigate the evolution process of the Li‐supplement and grain‐recrystallization during regeneration, and comprehensively prove the successful recovery of the highly degraded microstructure, including significant elimination of Ni2+ and O vacancies. Beneficial from the favorable reconstructed single‐crystalline particles, the regenerated NCM (R‐NCM) represents remarkably enhanced structural stability, electrochemical activity, O2 and cracks suppression during charge/discharge, thus achieving the excellent performances in long‐term cycling and high‐rate tests. As a result, R‐NCM maintains the 86.5% reversible capacity at 1C after 200 cycles. Instructively, the present molten salt can be successfully applied for recycling spent NCMs with various Li and Ni compositions (e.g., LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2). This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is an urgent task in view of the resource shortage and environmental concerns. Here, a facile ternary molten salt approach is presented for efficiently regenerating the LiNi0.5 Co0.2 Mn0.3 O2 (NCM523) cathode of spent LIBs. Such an approach involves the treatment of spent cathode powder in the ternary molten salt at a moderate temperature (400 °C) and subsequent annealing in oxygen. The Li loss and degraded phases in spent NCM that cause the capacity decay can be fully remedied after the regeneration process. As a result, the regenerated cathode delivers a reversible capacity of 160 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C with retention of 93.7% after 100 cycles and maintains a high capacity of 132 mAh g-1 at a high rate of 5 C. The electrochemical performance of regenerated NCM cathode is compared favorably to the fresh NCM cathode, which demonstrates the feasibility of the molten salt approach to directly regenerate spent NCM cathode.
