Abstract:Ceria-based catalysts have been investigated extensively for their good activities at low-medium temperatures for selective catalytic reduction of NO with ammonia (NH3-SCR). In considering the usual coexistence of carbon monoxide with nitrogen oxides, the effects of CO on SCR performance over the Sb0.5CeZr2Ox SCR catalyst have been investigated in this work, and a temperature-dependent CO influencing mechanism was disclosed. The presence of CO would somewhat decrease the SCR activity, where such a deteriorating effect became more serious in the high-temperature range. For instance, NOx conversion was suppressed from about 91% to 67% at ca. 380 degrees C in the presence of 1% CO. Primarily, the presence of CO would inhibit the chemical adsorption of NO and the formation of reactive nitrate species, which was the main factor of the decreased SCR activity in the low-medium temperature range. Importantly, at higher temperatures, the adsorbed -NHx species would be partly consumed by excessive CO to generate -NCO species, thus disturbing the reduction process of NO. The generated -NCO species were also readily oxidized to release undesired NOx. The findings could provide guidelines for practical applications of ceria-based SCR catalysts.
