Abstract:Aiming at preventing the network performance deterioration caused by fixed link topology connections in optically switched networks, this paper proposes and validates an interconnection and control mechanism that can automatically optimize and reconfigure network topology according to the network traffic volume. This mechanism combines deep reinforcement learning with software defined network technology. Based on the real-time network performance parameters collected by the software-defined network control plane and the performance feedback of the network simulation system, the continuous training of the topology structure can be realized in the model of deep reinforcement learning. The automatic network topology reconfiguration is achieved with improved network performance. The experimental results show that for a given traffic intensity, the model trained by deep reinforcement learning can learn the topology reconstruction strategy and realize automatic selection. The optimal network topology structure can be achieved in one step, with reduced average network delay and average packet loss.
Topology Bench: Systematic Graph Based Benchmarking for Core Optical Networks

Abstract:Topology Bench is a comprehensive topology dataset designed to accelerate benchmarking studies in optical networks. The dataset, focusing on core optical networks, comprises publicly accessible and ready-to-use topologies, including (a) 105 georeferenced real-world optical networks and (b) 270,900 validated synthetic topologies. Prior research on real-world core optical networks has been characterised by fragmented open data sources and disparate individual studies. Moreover, previous efforts have notably failed to provide synthetic data at a scale comparable to our present study. Topology Bench addresses this limitation, offering a unified resource and represents a 61.5% increase in spatially-referenced real world optical networks. To benchmark and identify the fundamental nature of optical network topologies through the lens of graph-theoretical analysis, we analyse both real and synthetic networks using structural, spatial and spectral metrics. Our comparative analysis identifies constraints in real optical network diversity and illustrates how synthetic networks can complement and expand the range of topologies available for use. Currently, topologies are selected based on subjective criteria, such as preference, data availability, or perceived suitability, leading to potential biases and limited representativeness. Our framework enhances the generalisability of optical network research by providing a more objective and systematic approach to topology selection. A statistical and correlation analysis reveals the quantitative range of all of these graph metrics and the relationships between them. Finally, we apply unsupervised machine learning to cluster real-world topologies into distinctive groups using nine optimal graph metrics using K-means. We conclude the analysis by providing guidance on how to use such clusters to select a diverse set of topologies for future studies.

Abstract:In order to speed up network modeling in distribution network automation,overall network was divided into five layers with different date structures on the basis of distribution network characteristics.The space for the data was saved.And the object-oriented technology was used in the network modeling.Both static global topology and dynamic local topology were used to reduce searching range and speed up network modeling.The experimental results show that the method improves the speed of network topology,and it illustrates a good prospect of application and extention.

Abstract:Abstract. To date, free-space optical (FSO) networks play an important role in current network construction to support large-capacity transmission, where randomly distributed FSO terminals desire to exchange a tremendous amount of information over atmospheric turbulence channels. However, in the presence of atmospheric turbulence and misalignment fading channels, FSO network topology can be dynamic and disconnected. To mitigate the impact of dynamic network environments, appropriate higher-layer protocols should be designed. We explore a practical terrestrial mobile ad-hoc FSO network based on the bundle protocol of disruption-tolerant network, and the theoretical cross-layer system model between physical layer and network layer is derived. To design the topology, at the bundle layer, the distributed routing scheme centrality and probability (CAP) is proposed, where contact probability, sociocentric measure, and message replication strategy are considered simultaneously, and the joint forwarding decision rule is given. Simulation results on the opportunistic networking environment simulator are presented, which show that CAP can be better compared with the conventional end-to-end protocol-based routing scheme.

Virtual Topology Design in IP/WDM Networks

Abstract:A short-light path preferred establishment mechanism is proposed to solve the virtual topology design problem in IP/WDM networks.The proposed mechanism limits the hop counts of the light path in optical layer to avoid overuse of bandwidth by the long-light path,and establishes more light paths with small hops.Simulation results show that the designed virtual topology with this mechanism effectively reduces network blocking probability and increases the traffic grooming efficiency in a large scale of traffic loads.

Abstract:A train backbone network consists of a sequence of nodes arranged in a linear topology. A key step that enables communication in such a network is that of topology discovery, or train inauguration, whereby nodes learn in a distributed fashion the physical topology of the backbone network. While the current standard for train inauguration assumes wired links between adjacent backbone nodes, this work investigates the more challenging scenario in which the nodes communicate wirelessly. The key motivations for this desired switch from wired topology discovery to wireless one are the flexibility and capability for expansion and upgrading of a wireless backbone. The implementation of topology discovery over wireless channels is made difficult by the broadcast nature of the wireless medium, and by fading and interference. A novel topology discovery protocol is proposed that overcomes these issues and requires relatively minor changes to the wired standard. The protocol is shown via analysis and numerical results to be robust to the impairments caused by the wireless channel including interference from other trains.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of global informatization, information has penetrated into every corner of human society. With the popularization of Internet, the transmission bandwidth of information becomes more and more important. Nowadays, people’s demand and dependence on information are becoming stronger and stronger. It is urgent to expand the capacity of wide area backbone communication network, and the optical network composed of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) can just take this role. In WDM network, it can transmit multiple optical signals of different wavelengths in one fiber at the same time. WDM has the advantages of large transmission capacity, strong technical adaptability, simple implementation and easy expansion. In addition, WDM optical network can also make full use of the huge bandwidth of optical fiber itself to carry out high-speed transmission. Now, the optical network using WDM technology has become the backbone network of long-distance transmission. This paper studies the optical fiber communication system and analyzes the structure of the optical fiber network. For the optical network, how to find the appropriate routing is a very important technology. After analyzing all kinds of basic routing technologies, this paper proposes a new policy based routing technology, and carries out relevant experiments. The experimental results show that the new routing technology has some advantages compared with the old routing technology.

Abstract:IP/DWDM optical Internet is considered to be one of the most potential candidates for NGI (Next Generation Internet) backbone. However, the bottlenecks caused by the electronics still exist. A solution to this problem is to design an optimal virtual topology. In this paper. a novel virtual topology design method is presented. minimizing the sum of traffic-weighted hop count. Based on the given physical topology and the specific traffic matrix, the corresponding virtual topology is designed, and then, over which the traffic is routed. Due to its NP-hard nature, the design problem is decomposed into three subproblems: virtual topology construction, wavelength assignment and traffic routing, which are solved with heuristic algorithms respectively. To verify the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed method, a simulation environment is developed and simulation has been done over some actual network topologies. Simulation results have shown that the proposed method is both feasible and effective.

Abstract:After entering the 21st century, the annual growth rate of network bandwidth demand is as high as 50-100%. In recent years, Automatic Switch Optical Network (ASON) have been widely studied as a new generation optical network technology with high speed, large capacity and ultra-long distance transmission. Among them, the main research focuses on improving the network bandwidth and transmission rate. However, due to the increasingly stable transmission medium and mode, the improvement of research results is very limited, especially in the current situation of a large number of network nodes. In order to improve the performance of optical network, a new structure model of optical network hypergraph is proposed based on Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) and Hypergraph theory. In addition, the routing based on parallel-path-based bandwidth algorithm (PPBA) demonstrates the excellent topology characteristics of the network, such as small diameter, low blocking rate and short forwarding delay.

Abstract:For the quality of service (QoS) and fairness considerations, the hop counts of various lightpaths in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical network should be short and compact. The development of multi-granularity optical switching technology has made it possible to construct various fiber topologies over a fixed physical topology. This paper describes a fiber topology design (FTD) problem, which minimizes the maximum number of required fibers in the physical links for a maximum lightpath hop count in the fiber topology. After the formular description for the FTD problem, a method was given to obtain the lower bound on the maximum number of required fibers. For large or moderate scale networks, three heuristic algorithms are given to efficiently solve the FTD problem. This study gives a new way to optimize the resource configuration performance in WDM optical networks at the topology level and proves its effectiveness via both analyses and numerical experiments.

Abstract:In large scale networks composed of several hierarchical subnetworks, topology aggregation is implemented for both scalability and security consideration. However, due to the special characteristic of optical wavelength-routed networks, existing topology aggregation algorithms cannot be applied directly for topology compression. In this paper, we propose a kind of topology aggregation algorithm suitable for hierarchical wavelength-routed optical networks, thereby considering information of residual wavelengths on network links. Basically, our topology aggregation algorithm is based on a transition matrix technique for constructing a full mesh topology and asymmetric star approach for a more compact topology. Simulations with randomly-generated networks show that topology information compression can be achieved with a little loss of its accuracy: the ratio of border node pairs with representation deviation being well below 10%. Results also indicate that the advantage of our algorithm is also behaved on reducing the amount of link-state-advertisement messages and making networks less vulnerable to propagation delay of these messages over communication links.
