Abstract:Abstract. To date, free-space optical (FSO) networks play an important role in current network construction to support large-capacity transmission, where randomly distributed FSO terminals desire to exchange a tremendous amount of information over atmospheric turbulence channels. However, in the presence of atmospheric turbulence and misalignment fading channels, FSO network topology can be dynamic and disconnected. To mitigate the impact of dynamic network environments, appropriate higher-layer protocols should be designed. We explore a practical terrestrial mobile ad-hoc FSO network based on the bundle protocol of disruption-tolerant network, and the theoretical cross-layer system model between physical layer and network layer is derived. To design the topology, at the bundle layer, the distributed routing scheme centrality and probability (CAP) is proposed, where contact probability, sociocentric measure, and message replication strategy are considered simultaneously, and the joint forwarding decision rule is given. Simulation results on the opportunistic networking environment simulator are presented, which show that CAP can be better compared with the conventional end-to-end protocol-based routing scheme.

Abstract:For environmental monitoring scenarios with frequent adverse weather events, we propose in this letter a storage-enabled optical wireless backbone network to reduce blocking of requests and provide data transfer at an appropriate time. A framework integrating the topology control with the store-and-forward service is presented, and a cross-layer feedback mechanism is designed internally for handling the potential throughput loss. The analytical upper bound on the performance metric of fractional bandwidth guarantee (FBG) is then derived to provide insight into the proposed scheme. Monte-Carlo simulations verify the effectiveness of the derived bound and demonstrate that our scheme can achieve 0.263 more FBG than the benchmark.

Abstract:To effectively mitigate the influence of atmospheric turbulence, a novel discrete-time analog transmission free-space optical (DTAT-FSO) communication scheme is proposed. It directly maps information sources to discrete-time analog symbols via joint source-channel coding and modulation. Differently from traditional digital free space optical (TD-FSO) schemes, the proposed DTAT-FSO approach can automatically adapt to the variation of the channel state, with no need to adjust the specific modulation and coding scheme. The performance of the DTAT-FSO system was evaluated in both intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) and coherent FSO systems for high-resolution image transmission. The results show that the DTAT-FSO reliably transmits images at low received optical powers (ROPs) and automatically enhances quality at high ROPs, while the TD-FSO experiences cliff and leveling effects when the channel state varies. With respect to the TD-FSO scheme, the DTAT-FSO scheme improved receiver sensitivity by 2.5 dB in the IM/DD FSO system and 0.8 dB in the coherent FSO system, and it achieved superior image fidelity under the same ROP. The automatic adaptation feature and improved performance of the DTAT-FSO suggest its potential for terrestrial, airborne, and satellite optical networks, addressing challenges posed by atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:Abstract Due to the increasing demand for higher bandwidth in modern communication systems, conventional networks are continuously expanded with new technologies to improve coverage. Free space optical communications (FSOC) shows some significant advantages concerning system setup time in comparison with the classical fiber optical systems on one hand, substantial spectral bandwidth and performances in comparison with the wireless systems under certain conditions on the other hand. This makes this technology not only a reasonable extension for metropolitan area networks but also provides the capability to set up a network after an outage in case of natural disaster quickly. But transmitting data by using FSOC involves some limiting factors that have to be considered prior to each installation. Since the atmospheric channel is not static, the influence of changing weather conditions or industrial smog have a significant impact on the available bitrate. A simulation platform is developed and presented in this paper for investigation of FSOC considering these circumstances. Regarding the atmospheric channel, turbulence, distance-dependent beam divergence, and applied modulation schemes, a general overview of the capabilities is presented and discussed. The insight of this paper should help to make a decision under which preconditions either the FSOC provides a meaningful application possibility, or the limiting factors become too crucial and other technologies must be considered.

Abstract:Deterministic networks are network technologies proposed by industry in recent years to solve the problems of delay and packet loss in traditional networks. In this paper, we introduce the concept of deterministic networks in space networks, and address the problem of large variation of propagation delay in intercontinental communication scenarios in space networks. First, we establish a network model to observe the variation of delay in low-earth-orbit constellations, and then we realize the optimization of delay jitter between city pairs through network topology planning to build a deterministic network in space. Simulation results show that the end-to-end delay jitter variance value of the network topology planning scheme proposed in this paper is reduced by about 50% in the continuous time period compared with the traditional grid scheme.

Abstract:A short-light path preferred establishment mechanism is proposed to solve the virtual topology design problem in IP/WDM networks.The proposed mechanism limits the hop counts of the light path in optical layer to avoid overuse of bandwidth by the long-light path,and establishes more light paths with small hops.Simulation results show that the designed virtual topology with this mechanism effectively reduces network blocking probability and increases the traffic grooming efficiency in a large scale of traffic loads.

Abstract:In large-scale satellite constellations, the efficiency of inter-satellite communication is paramount. Traditional topology control strategies, such as the Manhattan configuration, provide stable links but can result in indirect communication paths, affecting the efficiency of information transfer. This paper addresses this issue by proposing an innovative "3 + 1" dynamic topology control scheme. The scheme retains three static links determined by the relative angular velocity and acceleration while introducing a dynamic link based on distance and angular velocity constraints to optimize the link duration and overall network communication efficiency. To address the complexity of matching dynamic links, this paper introduces an elite strategy-based maximum weighted matching algorithm for general graphs. Compared to traditional greedy algorithms, our proposed algorithm significantly improves the link duration and topological stability. Through simulation experiments comparing communication delays between Xiamen and Los Angeles, our results show that the proposed dynamic link scheme substantially reduces the average delay, enhancing the efficiency and flexibility of inter-satellite communication. This research not only extends the duration of inter-satellite links but also provides new perspectives and methodologies for further studies on inter-satellite topology control strategies.

Abstract:Aiming at preventing the network performance deterioration caused by fixed link topology connections in optically switched networks, this paper proposes and validates an interconnection and control mechanism that can automatically optimize and reconfigure network topology according to the network traffic volume. This mechanism combines deep reinforcement learning with software defined network technology. Based on the real-time network performance parameters collected by the software-defined network control plane and the performance feedback of the network simulation system, the continuous training of the topology structure can be realized in the model of deep reinforcement learning. The automatic network topology reconfiguration is achieved with improved network performance. The experimental results show that for a given traffic intensity, the model trained by deep reinforcement learning can learn the topology reconstruction strategy and realize automatic selection. The optimal network topology structure can be achieved in one step, with reduced average network delay and average packet loss.

Abstract:For the quality of service (QoS) and fairness considerations, the hop counts of various lightpaths in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical network should be short and compact. The development of multi-granularity optical switching technology has made it possible to construct various fiber topologies over a fixed physical topology. This paper describes a fiber topology design (FTD) problem, which minimizes the maximum number of required fibers in the physical links for a maximum lightpath hop count in the fiber topology. After the formular description for the FTD problem, a method was given to obtain the lower bound on the maximum number of required fibers. For large or moderate scale networks, three heuristic algorithms are given to efficiently solve the FTD problem. This study gives a new way to optimize the resource configuration performance in WDM optical networks at the topology level and proves its effectiveness via both analyses and numerical experiments.

Abstract:Topology control and channel assignment are two important methods to improve the performance of wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we investigate such a combination scheme composed of a k -Neighbor topology control algorithm and a greedy channel assignment (GCA) algorithm. Based on this combination scheme, we discuss the impact of some parameters on the performance of networks in terms of the path loss factor, node density, maximum node degree, etc. Simulation results will show that such a combination scheme can reduce the required channel number effectively, compared with its theoretical upper bound. In particular, if the node degree in a network is not more than k, various simulations indicate that the required channel number is not more than 2 k + 1.

Abstract:When a sensor network is deployed for monitoring a protected region, topology control is usually used to save energy consumption, especially in a dense deployment.In this paper, we propose a new and simple topology control protocol, Convergent SparseDT, which controls the network density pretty well, and disposes of some important faults of classical topology control protocols while working with dense sensor network.It is a compromise between the energy consumption, network congestion and the area coverage.It guarantees the coverage of most of the monitored area with almost negligible communication and computing overhead.The performance of this protocol is thoroughly analyzed and simulated in NS2 simulator.

Abstract:Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology has emerged as a promising technology for backbone networks. The optical layer based on WDM technology provides optical routing services to the upper layers such as the packet-switching layer and the time-division multiplexing (TDM) layer over the generalized multiprotocol label-switching (GMPLS) paradigm. The set of all-optical communication channels (lightpaths) in the optical layer defines the logical topology for the upper layer applications. Since the traffic demand of upper layer applications fluctuates from time to time, it is required to reconfigure the underlying logical topology in the optical layer accordingly. However, the reconfiguration for the logical topology is reluctantly disruptive to the network since some lightpaths should be torn down and some traffic has to be buffered or rerouted during the reconfiguration process. Therefore, it needs to have an efficient transition method to shift the current logical topology to the new one so as to minimize the effect of the reconfiguration on the upper layer traffic. This paper proposes several heuristic algorithms that move the current logical topology efficiently to the given target logical topology in large-scale wavelength-routed optical networks. In the proposed algorithms, the performance improvement/degradation of data transmission [transmission delay or distance between a source-destination (s-d) pair] caused by a new lightpath is considered as benefit for establishing the new lightpath. The proposed algorithms construct the new logical topology starting from a lightpath with the largest benefit to the user traffic. Simulation experiments have been performed to evaluate the proposed algorithms in comparison with existing algorithms in a National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET)-like network model with 16 nodes and 25 links. The results show that the proposed algorithms yield much better performance (shorter average packet hot distance) than previous algorithms mostly with comparable computation time.

Abstract:Space laser communications gradually reveal an increasing development trend due to the outstanding features of laser links. However, the satellite-ground laser link can be easily affected by the absorption, scattering, and turbulence of the atmospheric clouds. It will lead to the laser transmission signal being seriously attenuated or even interrupted, which becomes the bottleneck of the satellite-ground laser networking. In this paper, considering the ground station (GST) multiple access candidates and meteorological factors, a predictable network mechanism of satellite-ground laser links construction is proposed to ensure the continuous communications of the satellite-ground laser network. By introducing the prediction of the atmospheric change trend of a specified area in a certain period, we evaluate the performance of this networking approach in terms of probability of interruption, end-to-end delay, and other Quality-of-Service (QoS) indicators. The simulation results indicate that if we could ensure the accuracy of the prediction of meteorological factors over the GSTs, the corresponding GSTs will be selected for communication through the results. Therefore, the end-to-end networking system will achieve long-term uninterrupted communication in the future.
A Topology Control Strategy with Reliability Assurance for Satellite Cluster Networks in Earth Observation

Abstract:This article investigates the dynamic topology control problemof satellite cluster networks (SCNs) in Earth observation (EO) missions by applying a novel metric of stability for inter-satellite links (ISLs). The properties of the periodicity and predictability of satellites' relative position are involved in the link cost metric which is to give a selection criterion for choosing the most reliable data routing paths. Also, a cooperative work model with reliability is proposed for the situation of emergency EO missions. Based on the link cost metric and the proposed reliability model, a reliability assurance topology control algorithm and its corresponding dynamic topology control (RAT) strategy are established to maximize the stability of data transmission in the SCNs. The SCNs scenario is tested through some numeric simulations of the topology stability of average topology lifetime and average packet loss rate. Simulation results show that the proposed reliable strategy applied in SCNs significantly improves the data transmission performance and prolongs the average topology lifetime.

Topology Control and Channel Assignment in Lossy Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), a significant amount of packets are lost when transmitted over wireless links, leading to unnecessary energy expenditure. This lossy property of a link can be described by the packet reception ratio (PRR) over it. In the literature, it was shown that the PRR of a link is a non-decreasing function of its signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), which indicates that the PRR can be improved by either enhancing the received power or reducing the interference-plus-noise level. On the other hand, a number of topology control algorithms and channel assignment algorithms have been presented for WSNs to reduce interference. However, most of them simply use the number of interfering nodes to describe the level of interference, which is inaccurate thus cannot guarantee high PRR. In this paper, we propose a joint design of topology control and channel assignment for lossy WSNs, aiming at improving the PRR of each link in the network. We first construct a maximum PRR spanning tree, then adjust the transmitting power and channel of sensor nodes to further improve the PRR of links on the tree. This way, packet retransmission due to lossy links is minimized, which leads to performance improvement in terms of network throughput, energy efficiency and end-to-end packet delay. We formulate the joint design into an optimization problem and prove its NP-hardness. We then present heuristic algorithms to give practical solutions for the problem. We have carried out extensive simulations and the results show that network performance can be significantly improved by using the topology generated by our algorithms compared to the topologies generated by other schemes under the same traffic demand.

Abstract:Due to the rapid development of satellite laser communication technology, free‐space optical (FSO) links present a promising alternative to traditional radio frequency (RF) links. In this paper, taking the influence of weather factors into consideration, we investigate the performance of the hybrid FSO/RF links where the feeder link operates in the FSO band and the user link operates in the hybrid FSO/RF band. Specifically, the FSO feeder link is modeled by the gamma–gamma distribution in the presence of beam wander and pointing error, and the detection method adopts either the intensity modulation with direct intensity (IM/DD) or heterodyne detection. The RF user link is assumed to follow the shadowed Rician model. In addition, in order to improve the transmission rate of the link under the time‐varying satellite–terrestrial channel, a rate adaptation scheme is proposed. The performance of the system under study is evaluated in terms of the outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and average transmission rate. Our results provide some important insights, for example, (1) due to the constraints of the feeder link and weather factors, there is an upper limit on the outage performance and bit error rate of the hybrid link; (2) the adaptive transmission strategy can significantly improve the transmission rate of the link compared with traditional design. Taking the weather factor into consideration, we propose a dual‐hop hybrid FSO/RF relay link model and give a detail description of it. We discussed the notable effects of the shadowing conditions, the atmospheric turbulence, the pointing errors, and detection method on the overall system performance. In addition, we find that the adaptive rate transmission strategy can significantly improve the transmission strategy of the system compared to the fixed rate design.
