Abstract:In delay tolerant networks (DTN), the social attributes of nodes show long-term stability, which can be leveraged for more effective routing. In this paper, we first present a novel way of constructing social circles based on the node clustering phenomena in DTN. Then, considering that the forwarding capability of nodes is significantly different, we propose a spray strategy based on social circles (named SC-SS) to improve the spray and-wait routing algorithm. SC-SS selects the next hop based on the social circle of nodes in the spray phase. Instead of fixing the initial number of copies, we design an adaptive multiple spray-and-wait routing algorithm based on social circles (named SC-AMSW) to further improve the performance of SC-SS. SC-AMSW selectively sprays messages multiple times in the wait phase and determines an appropriate number of redundant message copies based on delivery predictability. We conduct extensive simulations to confirm the effectiveness of our proposed routing algorithms in DTN.

Abstract:Delay/disruption tolerant network (DTN) is originated from the pioneer research into interplanetary internet and later, researchers found that DTN can also be applied to many challenged networks. Several DTN routing protocols have been presented to improve the routing performance, since message delivery is difficult in such networks due to the absence of stable end-to-end paths. However, the protocols ignore the fact that the nodes in DTN like satellites and other wireless devices usually have very limited resources like battery, bandwidth, and storage. In this paper, we introduce four existing routing algorithms and two new routing algorithms we propose, and compare their performances of delivery ratio and latency in the case of limited buffer size under both ground and space environment. We obtain the curves of the network throughput varying with the network load, and find it showing a congestion phenomenon, from which we can compare the congestion control capacities of the routing protocols. Simulation results show that our newly proposed routing protocols can successfully cope with the congestion caused by storage constraints.

Abstract:Abstract. To date, free-space optical (FSO) networks play an important role in current network construction to support large-capacity transmission, where randomly distributed FSO terminals desire to exchange a tremendous amount of information over atmospheric turbulence channels. However, in the presence of atmospheric turbulence and misalignment fading channels, FSO network topology can be dynamic and disconnected. To mitigate the impact of dynamic network environments, appropriate higher-layer protocols should be designed. We explore a practical terrestrial mobile ad-hoc FSO network based on the bundle protocol of disruption-tolerant network, and the theoretical cross-layer system model between physical layer and network layer is derived. To design the topology, at the bundle layer, the distributed routing scheme centrality and probability (CAP) is proposed, where contact probability, sociocentric measure, and message replication strategy are considered simultaneously, and the joint forwarding decision rule is given. Simulation results on the opportunistic networking environment simulator are presented, which show that CAP can be better compared with the conventional end-to-end protocol-based routing scheme.

SMART: A Social- and Mobile-Aware Routing Strategy for Disruption-Tolerant Networks

Abstract:Disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs) are sparse mobile ad hoc networks where nodes connect with each other intermittently and end-to-end communication paths do not exist. Data routing in DTNs is challenging and has drawn much attention from research communities recently. Although many DTN routing strategies have been proposed in the past, they confront problems such as blind spots and dead ends and lack efficient implementation in a decentralized, large-scale, mobile, and dynamic environment. To overcome these difficulties, we introduce a new solution for DTNs that leverages the social properties and mobility characteristics of users. Our observation of the mobile trajectories of three data sets collected from real DTNs reveals that user movements appear locally and they tend to form communities correlated to geographic locations. Based on these findings, we propose a social- and mobile-aware routing strategy (SMART). It exploits a distributed community partitioning algorithm to divide the DTN into smaller communities regarding user locations and interaction routines. For intracommunity communications, a decayed routing metric convoluting social similarity and social centrality is calculated, which is used to decide forwarding node efficiently while avoiding the blind-spot and dead-end problems. To enable efficient intercommunity communications, we choose the fringe nodes that travel remotely as relays, and we propose the node-to-community utilities for routing decision across communities. We present empirical analysis to show that SMART reduces the occurrence of blind spots and dead ends to a level below 1%. The efficiency of SMART is evaluated by extensive trace-driven experiments, which illustrate that it outperforms other routing strategies in various real DTN traces.
IMPLEMENTATION OF DIRECTIONAL ROUTING IN FREE SPACE OPTICAL MOBILE AD-HOC NETWORKS

Abstract:Wireless networking has been realized using RF based technologies. But these days, Free Space Optical (FSO) technology is gaining popularity. Because of its attractive characteristics like dense spatial reuse, low power required to transmit bits, and comparatively high bandwidth and also due to the availability of advanced optical components, the networking domain could be incorporated with optical domain to have a higher transmission capacity, which lead to Free Space Optical Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (FSO-MANET) development. In FSO-MANET, there are only limited literature works on routing methodologies. The aim of the paper is to implement a directional routing (Directional Mobile Orthogonal Routing protocol) protocol in FSO-MANET’s which uses directionality at the network layer. This routing protocol uses unique concept called directional routing table (DRT). Here the node movement is traced based on local information of neighboring nodes. In this type of routing table (DRT) the interface directions are mapped to a set-of-IDs to provide probabilistic routing information based on interface direction. We show that DMORRP achieves about 17-18 times more average throughput than AODV routing protocol and also gives best performance than AODV under increasing number of nodes.

Abstract:Under the condition of a heavy loaded network, the existing mobile ad hoc routing protocols suffer a rapid performance drop. In this paper, we design a bandwidth estimation model and a load balance mechanism, and combining with AODV we propose a new routing protocol. Considering the latency factor, we further improve the protocol. Simulation shows that the new schemes improve packet delivery ratio, reduces average end-to-end latency and decreases routing overhead.

Abstract:Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) is a decentralized network where mobile nodes in the network communicate with each other over wireless links without any infrastructure or central controller. With the latest development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the development of network technology for multi-cooperative UAVs has become crucial. Routing in a Flying Ad hoc Networks (FANETs) is a challenging problem. However, traditional MANET routing protocols often only consider the current connection state when establishing a route and selecting the next hop. In high mobility FANETs, these methods are possible not optimal or even wrong. Meanwhile, FANET has certain advantages. For example, most UAVs are equipped with Global Position System (GPS) or similar devices that can provide their own spatial location information. Routing decisions can be optimized and adjusted with this available information. In this paper, based on the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol, we propose a Link Duration OLSR (LD-OLSR) protocol. The proposed protocol uses the situation information of the nodes in three dimensions to predict the duration of the link to optimize the establishment of the backbone network. The simulation results show that the algorithm effectively improves the packet delivery rate and reduces the delay of packets.

Abstract:Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are collections of mobile nodes that can communicate with one another using multihop wireless links. MANETs are often deployed in the environments, where there is no fixed infrastructure and centralized management. The nodes of mobile ad hoc networks are susceptible to compromise. In such a scenario, designing an efficient, reliable and secure routing protocol has been a major challengesue over the last many years. The routing protocol Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) has no security measures in-built in it. It is vulnerable to many types of routing attacks. The flood attack is one of them. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective technique to secure Ad hoc Ondemand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol against flood attacks. To deal with a flood attack, we have proposed Neighbor Defense Technique for Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (NDTAODV). This makes AODV more robust. The proposed technique has been designed to isolate the flood attacker with the use of timers, peak value and hello alarm technique. We have simulated our work in Network Simulator NS-2.33 (NS-2) with different pause times by way of different number of malicious nodes. We have compared the performance of NDTAODV with the AODV in normal situation as well as in the presence of malicious attacks. We have considered Packet Delivery Fraction (PDF), Average Throughput (AT) and Normalized Routing Load (NRL) for comparing the performance of NDTAODV and AODV.

Abstract:To have a better network usage in IP (Internet protocol) over WDM (Wavelength division multiplexing) networks, it is important to take into account the combined topology and resource usage information at the IP and optical layers, i.e, for an arriving request, there should be a scheme to determine whether it is better to route it over the existing topology or to open new wavelength paths. Moreover, lightpath length should be considered in many cases especially for different QoS (Quality of service) applications and traffic engineering. To solve these issues, this paper develops an integrated dynamic length-constrained routing algorithm based on transforming-graph. As the proposed routing scheme makes full use of the statistic information of the users' bandwidth requirement and considers carefully both the IP and optical layers' information, thus reduces greatly the bandwidth fragment which can not be used by any other subsequent requests, i.e, an improved network resource usage. Simulation results show that the developed scheme performs very well in terms of performance metrics such as the number of rejected requests and the network average blocking probability.
A Fault-Tolerant Routing Algorithm Design for On-Chip Optical Networks

Abstract:Optical networks have been considered for on-chip communications due to its advantages on bandwidth density, power efficiency and propagation speed over the electrical counterpart. However, the major optical device-micro ring resonator is very sensitive to manufacturing errors and temperature fluctuations, which results in the bandwidth loss or even the failure of optical link. Thus, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant and deadlock-free routing algorithm to improve the reliability of on-chip optical network without requiring additional virtual channel. In addition, a path selection mechanism taking account of the actual bandwidth of the optical link affected by fabrication and temperature variations is implemented in the routing unit. The simulation results show that compared to the conventional fault-tolerant routing methods, our routing algorithm can improve the transmission latency and throughput of the network under static and dynamic link faults by up to 51% and 22%, respectively.
Performance Analysis of a Propagation Territory-based Routing in MANETs with Obstacles

Abstract:This study considers constructing an efficient routing protocol in MANETs with obstacles. We take advantage of the location information provided by Global Position System (GPS) and propose a novel greedy propagation territory-based routing mechanism to establish the routing path between source and destination nodes. The mechanism consists of four phases and each phase defines a propagation territory and routing strategy to make a locally optimal decision to forward packets. For each mobile wireless node, including source and relay nodes, the mechanism selects a node in their propagation territory that is closest to the destination as a next hop relay node to deliver the packets until the destination is reached. In addition, when source and relay nodes moves closer to obstacles, the signal interferences by obstacles are considered. If the radio signal of a node is disturbed by an obstacle, the neighboring node with the lowest signal interference in its propagation territory is substituted as a next hop relay node. The simulation results showed that the proposed routing mechanism demonstrates a better performance in terms of the average packet delivery ratio than those of the ad-hoc on demand distance vector and greedy perimeter stateless routing schemes when the nodes move at the high-moving speed scenario. In the low-speed scenario, the average delay hop count of the proposed routing mechanism is less than those of the other routing schemes.

Abstract:Optical transport networks (OTNs) are widely used in backbone- and metro-area transmission networks to increase network transmission capacity. In the OTN, it is particularly crucial to rationally allocate routes and maximize network capacities. By employing deep reinforcement learning (DRL)- and software-defined networking (SDN)-based solutions, the capacity of optical networks can be effectively increased. However, because most DRL-based routing optimization methods have low sample usage and difficulty in coping with sudden network connectivity changes, converging in software-defined OTN scenarios is challenging. Additionally, the generalization ability of these methods is weak. This paper proposes an ensembles- and message-passing neural-network-based Deep Q-Network (EMDQN) method for optical network routing optimization to address this problem. To effectively explore the environment and improve agent performance, the multiple EMDQN agents select actions based on the highest upper-confidence bounds. Furthermore, the EMDQN agent captures the network's spatial feature information using a message passing neural network (MPNN)-based DRL policy network, which enables the DRL agent to have generalization capability. The experimental results show that the EMDQN algorithm proposed in this paper performs better in terms of convergence. EMDQN effectively improves the throughput rate and link utilization of optical networks and has better generalization capabilities.

Abstract:Because traditional Internet architecture is not suitable for hash network environments like sparse distribution and intermittent connection of nodes, Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) is proposed to address the delays and disruptions. In this paper, we propose a utility-based DTN routing protocol in Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). Through considering node distance, node speed, node direction angle, and node activity, the utility of node is defined and is computed to select node for forwarding messages. We simulate the proposed DTN routing protocol and six typical DTN routing protocols in a VANET environment. The simulation results show that our proposed utility-based DTN routing protocol is able to achieve a comparable performance.

Abstract:This paper considers the online routing, modulation, spectrum, and core allocation problem in elastic optical networks. Three algorithms are proposed to minimize the bandwidth blocking probability while taking into account the impact of interference from established lightpaths. These algorithms are based on a sequence of alternative paths, ordered in terms of increasing lengths, determined by Yen's algorithm. Each of the algorithms for the selected single or dual lightpath enforces the constraints of spectrum continuity, contiguity of the slots, and non-overlapping of the spectra with the established lightpaths, maximizes the number of bits per symbol, and selects a specific core on each link of the path. Simulation studies performed for two sample networks showed that the crosstalk has a significant impact on the bandwidth blocking probability. The best results were obtained by iterating over all paths and all slots, selecting the lightpath with the lowest average crosstalk per slot, consisting of the most loaded cores.

Abstract:In Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs), random access and dynamic routing are two critical techniques for mobile nodes to convey information without centralized scheduling. Conventionally, random access and dynamic routing are implemented at the Medium Access Control (MAC) and the network layer, respectively. However, the current MAC protocol Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) cannot support dynamic routing efficiently. To overcome this limitation, we shall propose a cross-layer protocol which takes dynamic routing into consideration when the mobile nodes contend to access the channel. In the proposed distributed protocol, the routing packets of the network layer are transmitted within the contention period. Since the transmission of routing packets is separated from data transmission in the time-domain, our cross- layer protocol eliminates the collision caused by the transmission of short routing packets. Simulation results will show that our design could significantly improve the system performance at both the MAC and network layers.

Abstract:In this paper,we propose a Directional Antenna based RouTing(DART)protocol that utilizes direction information to route packets.The direction information is more robust to mobility than the path information.The overhead scales linearly with the network size and does not vary with mobility and network loads.The simulations show that DART can offer a high packet delivery ratio in scenarios with high mobility.

Abstract:To provide communication services in delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) where there may exist no end-to-end paths between mobile node pairs, a variety of relaying and routing algorithms have been proposed under the assumption that the mobile nodes are homogeneously distributed in the network with the same contact rate and delivery cost. However, experimental data have revealed the heterogeneous contact rates between node pairs, and various applications of DTNs have shown that the mobile nodes often belong to different types in terms of energy consumption, communication ability, and other properties. Following the philosophy of exploiting the heterogeneous features of nodes to enhance the routing performance, we design an optimal relaying scheme for DTNs, which takes into account the nodes' heterogeneous contact rates and delivery costs when selecting relays to minimize the delivery cost while satisfying the required message delivery probability. We use the trace-driven simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of our optimal relaying scheme in various distributions of nodes' delivery costs and mobility environments. Simulation results show that our proposed optimal relaying scheme requires the least delivery cost and achieves the largest maximum delivery probability, compared with the schemes that neglect or do not fully take into account nodes' heterogeneity.
