Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:Based on the 2D-PC wave multilayer film structure, a method to broaden the bandwidth of polarization beam splitter is proposed, which is composed of two different thickness periodic film stacks. Combined with the evaluation function of polarization splitting characteristic, the particle swarm optimization method is employed to design the optimal structural parameters. A broadband and compact polarization beam splitter is acquired, in which the center wavelength is 565 nm and its working range has achieved 220 nm with the average extinction ratio over 30 dB. In addition, by using the finite difference time domain method, the band structure and transmission spectrum of the wave-structure multilayer film are calculated, the angle sensitivity of the structure is investigated in detail. And we also study the electromagnetic field in the wavy-structure. Simulation results prove that the structure composed of the two different thickness periodic film stacks can avoid the discontinuity of bandgap, and PSO method can accelerate the convergence of the optimization algorithm and extend the bandwidth effectively.

Abstract:A high-performance broadband polarization-independent directional coupler is designed by using asymmetric-waveguides configuration on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Through the design of cascaded directional couplers, the coupling characteristics of the light with the orthogonally polarized transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) can be manipulated, so that the coupling strength could be equivalent between TE and TM polarizations within an ultra-broadband. Couplers with 50% splitting ratio are designed and simulated for operating in the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for both polarizations. Within the 100 nm wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, the deviations of splitting ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±3.3% and ±6.2%, respectively. And within the 200 nm wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the deviations for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±9.0% and ±7.8%, respectively. The footprint of this polarization-independent directional coupler is only 21 μm × 1.6 μm.

Abstract:A high uniformity and broad bandwidth Y junction optical beam splitter is proposed and analyzed in this paper based on silicon-on-insulator platform. By replacing the uniform branch with the multimode tapered branch, the bandwidth and the power uniformity of two output ports are unproved prominently. Furthermore, the sensitivity to fabrication accuracy is reduced by widening the splitting angle. The simulation and the experimental results confirm that the bandwidth is larger than 100 nm, the power uniformity of two output ports is enhanced 4 dB, whereas the insertion loss is less than 0.6 dB and the return loss is larger than 26 dB, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:Based on the traditional directional coupler, we proposed a scheme to design on-chip polarization beam splitters using an inverse design method. In our scheme, the coupling area of the designed devices are only 0.48 μm×6.4 μm. By manipulating the refractive index of the coupling region, the devices can work in C-band, L-band, O-band, or any other communication band. Different from conventional design methods, which need to adjust the design parameters artificially, if the initial conditions are determined, the proposed scheme can automatically adjust the design parameters of devices according to specific requirements. The simulation results show that the insertion losses of the designed polarization beam splitters can be less than 0.4 dB (0.35 dB) for TE (TM) mode at the wavelengths of 1310, 1550, and 1600 nm, and the extinction ratios are larger than 19.9 dB for the TE and TM modes at all three wavelengths. Besides, the extinction ratios of both polarization states are more than 14.5 dB within the wavelength range of 1286–1364 nm, 1497–1568 nm, and 1553–1634 nm. At the same time, the insertion losses are smaller than 0.46 dB.

Abstract:In this work, we propose an ultra-broadband and ultra-compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) on a standard silicon-on-isolator platform. Assisted by a tapered subwavelength-grating waveguide and a slot waveguide, the working bandwidth of the directional-coupler-based PBS covers the entire O-, E-, S-, C-, L- and U-bands and the coupling length is only 4.6 mu m. The insertion losses (ILs) of the device are simulated to be less than 0.8 dB and the extinction ratios (ERs) are larger than 10.9 dB at the wavelength range of 1260-1680 nm for both TE and TM polarizations. The experimental results show the average ILs are less than 1 dB for both polarizations at our measured wavelength ranges, which are consistent with the simulation results. It has the largest 1-dB bandwidth among all the reported broadband PBSs to the best of our knowledge. (C) 2021 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:A design of a 1 × 2 multimode 3 dB optical power splitter using tapered couplers is proposed and investigated in this paper. As an example, a 1 × 2 splitter processing five-lowest order transverse-electric-polarized modes is designed and optimized by utilizing finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. To verify the feasibility of this novel design, the optimized device is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The coupling lengths of tapered couplers are respectively 6.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 3.5 µm, 5.0 µm, 5.0 µm, 7.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 5.0 µm, and 8.0 µm. Measurement results reveal that, for the fabricated splitter, the power uniformity varies from 0.041 to 0.88 dB, the crosstalk ranges from -23.96 to -14.12 dB, and the insertion loss changes from 0.089 to 1.50 dB within a bandwidth from 1520 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:Wepropose and experimentally demonstrate the ultra-compact mode (de)multiplexers and polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on tapered bent asymmetric directional couplers. The strong coupling strength introduced by tapered bent waveguides significantly shortens the coupling length. As a result, high coupling and conversion efficiencies over a broad bandwidth can be obtained with small footprint. The coupling length of the fabricated PBS and mode (de)multiplexers are less than 4.9 m and 8.7 m, respectively. From 1534-1600 nm, the measured insertion loss (IL) is less than 1.4 and 1.55 dB for the TE1-TE0 and TE2-TE0 mode (de)multiplexers, respectively, and the crosstalk (CT) is less than 10 dB. The fabricated PBS shows low insertion loss of 0.55 dB and decent crosstalk of < 14 dB for both polarizations over an 85 nm wavelength range from 1505-1590 nm. Meanwhile, the larger fabrication tolerance ensures that the proposed devices can be readily fabricated with the standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive mode-order converting power splitter using a pixelated region is presented and investigated in this paper. As TE0 and TM0 modes are injected into the input port, they are converted into TE1 and TM1 modes, which evenly come out from the two output ports. The finite-difference time-domain method and direct-binary-search optimization algorithm are utilized to optimize structural parameters of the pixelated region to attain small insertion loss, low crosstalk, wide bandwidth, excellent power uniformity, polarization-insensitive property, and compact size. Experimental results reveal that the insertion loss, crosstalk, and power uniformity of the fabricated device at 1550 nm are 0.57, -19.67, and 0.094 dB in the case of TE polarization, while in the TM polarization, the relevant insertion loss, crosstalk, and power uniformity are 0.57, -19.40, and 0.11 dB. Within a wavelength range from 1520 to 1600 nm, for the fabricated device working at TE polarization, the insertion loss, crosstalk, and power uniformity are lower than 1.39, -17.64, and 0.14 dB. In the case of TM polarization, we achieved an insertion loss, crosstalk, and power uniformity less than 1.23, -17.62, and 0.14 dB.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:A novel ultra-short polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a bent directional coupler is proposed. The bent directional coupler has two bent optical waveguides with different core widths, which is designed to have phase-matching for TM polarization while there is a significant phase-mismatch for TE polarization. Therefore, the TM polarized light can be coupled from the narrow input waveguide to the adjacent wide waveguide while the TE polarization goes through the coupling region without significant coupling. An ultra-short (<10μm-long) PBS is designed based on silicon-on-insulator nanowires and the length of the bent coupling region is as small as 4.5μm when choosing the gap width as 200nm (large enough to simplify the fabrication). The numerical simulations show that the present PBS has a good fabrication tolerance for the variation of the waveguide width (more than ±60nm) and a very broad band (~200nm) for an extinction ratio of >10dB.

Abstract:A plasmonic-assisted polarization beam splitter based on bent directional coupling is proposed. The phase-match condition is satisfied for TM polarization only by properly choosing the widths of the two waveguides. Due to the bent and plasmonic-assisted asymmetry, birefringence is greatly enhanced, which allows high extinction ratio for polarization beam splitting with the total footprint of 8.1 mu m x 2.6 mu m. At the wavelength of 1.55 mu m, the extinction ratios are 25.2 and 29.5 dB for TM and TE polarizations, respectively and the corresponding insertion losses are only 0.2 and 0.035 dB.

Abstract:Many devices based on silicon and other photonic integrated circuit platforms exhibit significant polarization dependence. Polarization beam splitter (PBS) is a device that split optical signals into transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Among various PBSs, asymmetric directional couplers are widely used due to their fine performance, but their working bandwidth is limited due to wavelength changes that can lead to deviations in effective refractive index and coupling strength. We propose a PBS, which uses metamaterial anisotropy to replace structural asymmetry and break the bandwidth bottleneck. It achieves good performance in the wavelength range of 258 nm, where the extinction ratio of the TM polarization is greater than 24 dB and that of the TE polarization is greater than 26 dB. It covers the E, S, C, L, and U bands, and the coupling area is as small as 7.25×2.625 μm, with a total device footprint of 15.65×6.125 μm.
