Abstract:Excessive exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM), especially PM2.5 particles, adversely affects human health. Conventional PM2.5 detection instruments based on light scattering are generally bulky, expensive, and easily affected by particle size and composition. Here, we report a low-cost and compact one-stop PM2.5 detection platform by integrating a three-dimensional (3D) printed virtual impactor with a QCM sensor. To reduce eddy and airflow impact on the side wall and improve the VI lifetime, a computational fluid dynamics simulation is used to optimize the VI structure. Results show that when the included angle between the minor flow channel and the inner side of the major flow channel is 40-45 degrees and the included angle between the inlet channel and the outside wall of the major flow channel is 125 degrees, the VI has a relatively small particle loss, eddy, and good collection efficiency. Finally, the system detection performance is experimentally evaluated with a sensitivity of 0.08 Hz/min per mu g/m(3), showing a comparable performance with the commercial instrument.

Abstract:Dual-beam interferometric particle imaging (DIPI) has been proposed to measure opaque spherical particle size in the single-point region of interest. This work extends DIPI to measure the size and two-dimensional position of opaque spherical particle in a plane with dual-sheet illumination. A general DIPI model based on geometric optics is established to formulate the interference signal formation of DIPI by modeling the phase difference of two reflected light at far-field. Proof-of-concept experiments, incorporating digital inline holography (DIH), are performed for validation. An interferogram processing algorithm which adopts the sum-of-squared-difference image registration method and Fourier spectrum analysis has been proposed to locate the centroid of each out-of-focus pattern and extract the spatial frequency of fringes, and subsequently particle position and size. The average relative deviation values of DIPI in size measuring and two-dimensional locating are 2.4% and 1.9%, respectively, compared to those values by DIH, which demonstrates the practicability of DIPI in both respects. The extension of DIPI from point-probe to planar measurement promotes its applications to real scenarios, e.g., metal droplet in solid rocket propulsion. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present some new developments in particle characterization. More precisely, the paper will be focused on the description of some progresses in the characterization of particles by interferometric methods which are generally considered as the most accurate ones. Three standard configurations will be presented and discussed: i) Interference between scattered light from a particle and a single reference beam (holography), ii) Interference between different kinds of light scattered by a single particle (ILIDS), iii) Interference between the light scattered from different particles. A special attention will be devoted to the possibility to obtain 3D information on the particle location.

Abstract:The size and shape characterization of irregular particles is of great significance in the comprehensive understanding of many natural and industrial processes. The dual-beam interferometric particle imaging (DIPI) technique is adapted from a dual-beam backward illumination configuration of interferometric particle imaging to access the size and 2D shape of an irregular particle from its interferogram. An experimental setup combining the digital inline holography (DIH) and DIPI techniques characterizes the same projection of the same particle with a color camera, permitting the accuracy evaluation and validation between these two techniques. The comparison results show a good agreement between the 2D-Fourier transform of DIPI interferogram and the 2D-autocorrelation of DIH reconstructed in-focus image. The DIH gives the reference result for the size measurement of the particles, and we observe a maximum difference as low as 9% with the DIPI measurement. The backward arrangement of the dual-beam interferometric particle imaging technique facilitates its further instrumental development and application to a variety of real circumstances, e.g., solid fuel particles and ice crystals. A New Particle Sensor Based on True RMS Value Measurement.

Abstract:Direct-reading instruments which can provide real-time PM2.5 measurements are widely used because they are cheap and easy to use. However, these direct-reading instruments suffer from zero drift problems and have to be calibrated before use. Direct-reading instruments based on average value measurement can't give a correct assessment of PM2.5 mass concentrations when particles' diameter changes greatly. In this paper, a new particle sensor based on true RMS value measurement is designed. Three photodiodes are installed in the sensor at different scattering angles. The advantages of true RMS value measurement method are demonstrated from theory consideration. Field experiments have shown that: (1)PM2.5 mass concentrations based on true RMS value measurement are better than based on average value measurement, (2)PM2.5 mass concentrations got from different scattering angles are highly correlated, (3)this new particle sensor can achieve reasonable accuracy for running more than 120 hours.

Abstract:According to the characteristics of particulate matter in air environment, aiming at the defects of traditional sampling method, such as complex measurement process, heavy instrument and difficult on-line monitoring, this paper selects the light scattering method in non sampling method as the method of particulate matter concentration detection. According to the light scattering phenomenon and Mie scattering theory, in an ideal case, the light intensity of the scattered light is directly proportional to the mass concentration of particles, and the particle concentration can be calculated by algorithm. The particle concentration detection system is constructed by the data acquisition circuit, low-power sampling and holding circuit, control center circuit and power module.

Abstract:High-speed astigmatic dual-beam interferometric particle imaging (HADIPI) is adopted to simultaneously measure the three-dimensional (3D) position, velocity and size of spherical metal droplets. We propose to infer the depth displacement of the droplet directly from the angle shift of the interference fringe. Angular cross power spectral density is used to detect the angular shifts of the interference fringe. The depth displacements and velocities can be further obtained from the obtained angular shifts. Proof-of-concept experiments are conducted on micron -sized gallium droplets, demonstrating that the 3D trajectories of the droplets can be accurately obtained, with depth displacement accuracy of tens of microns, improving accuracy in depth position measurement compared to the traditional Lagrangian framework. Different from traditional imaging methods, HADIPI can directly display the 3D movement of droplets, including in the depth direction. In the combustion measurements of the solid rocket motor, the motion state of metal droplets can be precisely determined, demonstrating the feasibility and practicality.
Compact Cavity-Enhanced Aerosol Detector using Incoherent Light Sources

Abstract:We have realized a compact optical particle counter utilizing enhancement of light scattering within a high finesse Fabry-Perot optical cavity. In contrast to laser-based approaches such as cavity ringdown spectroscopy we use the light stream from both superluminescent and light-emitting diodes that have no longitudinal coherence. This eliminates the vibration sensitivity that is typical of laser-based cavity methods. The use of the transmission mode of detection allows us to reduce the cavity mirror separation to below 1 cm, with no obvious limit to miniaturization. Typical light scattering instruments are larger, in part due to their sensitivity to background signals from the light source. Our approach paves the way toward a new generation of compact and portable instruments. A simultaneous comparison of the scattering signals with a commercial particle counter shows that our cavity is also sensitive to ultrafine particles below 300 nm diameter that are typically not recorded in such counters.

A miniature system for particulate matter (PM) measurement

Abstract:A new miniature particulate matter (PM) sensing system was designed and fabricated. The system contains three parts: one virtual impactor for separating the particle size, a micro-heater for depositing the selected particles using thermophoretic precipitation and an interdigital capacitor (IDC) for measuring particles mass concentration. The virtual impactor was designed to concentrate particle with diameter less than 2.5μm and fabricated by using 8 layers dry film photoresist technology to reach the thickness of 400μm. The micro-heater creates a temperature gradient across in the channel above the interdigital capacitor. The experimental result shows the thermophoretic deposition enhance the sampler efficiency of 84% compared to natural deposition. The mass-loading on the interdigital capacitor causes a change in its capacitance and impedance using black carbon as the particle sample. At the sweeping frequency of 4MHz, the sensitivity of capacitance and impedance are about -56.8pF/μg and 3.68Ohm/μg.

Abstract:The particle matter inspection for pharmaceutical injection is inevitable in the field of pharmaceutical manufacturing, as it has the direct impact on the quality of the drugs. It is a challenge to inspect the contaminated injection online using an imaging system. This paper introduces a novel and effective inspection machine consisting of three modules, a mechanical system with 120 carousel grips, an image acquisition system with multihigh resolution cameras and a multilight sources station, and a distributed industrial electrical computer control system. Particle visual inspection machine first acquires image sequence using the high-speed image acquisition system. The image capture process at each camera module is alternately synchronized with different LED illumination techniques (light transmission method and light reflection method), enabling independent capture of particle images from the same container. Then, a set of novel algorithms for image registration and fast segmentation are proposed to minimize false rejections even in sensitive conditions, which enable the identification of all the tiny potential defects. Finally, a particle tracking and classification algorithm based on an adaptive local weighted-collaborative sparse model is also presented. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed inspection system can effectively detect the particles in the pharmaceutical infusion solution online, and achieve a performance rate of above 97% average accuracy.

Design of New Optical Sensor for Particle Counter

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of the existing optical particle counter sensor easily being affected particle shape, refractive index and photosensitive location,a new optical particle counter sensor was designed. First of all,a rota-tional symmetry elliptic cavity mirror was used for expanding acceptable scope of space angle,reduced the effects of particle shape and refractive index. Based on the T matrix theory,the relationship between the particle size and scat-tering luminous flux were simulated and computed for non spherical particles of the different refractive index,differ-ent shape and different orientation. The results showed, under the condition of different refractive index, different shape and different spatial orientation,the relationship between the received luminous flux and the particle size re-vealed a good monotonic. It indicated the system reduced the effects of particle shape and refractive index,and had a better effect than other existing systems. Secondly,the combination system of aspheric lens-cylindrical lens was used for improving the uniformity of laser intensity,reducing the effects of different position in the photosensitive ar-ea. The simulation calculation showed that after using the combination of optical devices,the uniformity of light in-tensity was significantly increased,and the negative impact of different location in the photosensitive area is largely eliminated. Then,the overall structure of the sensor is introduced. Finally,the experiment confirmed that the sensor has better performance. This sensor also had the structure simple,portable and inexpensive advantages,and higher application value.

Abstract:Particle counting serves as a pivotal constituent in diverse analytical domains, encompassing a broad spectrum of entities, ranging from blood cells and bacteria to viruses, droplets, bubbles, wear debris, and magnetic beads. Recent epochs have witnessed remarkable progressions in microfluidic chip technology, culminating in the proliferation and maturation of microfluidic chip-based particle counting methodologies. This paper undertakes a taxonomical elucidation of microfluidic chip-based particle counters based on the physical parameters they detect. These particle counters are classified into three categories: optical-based counters, electrical-based particle counters, and other counters. Within each category, subcategories are established to consider structural differences. Each type of counter is described not only in terms of its working principle but also the methods employed to enhance sensitivity and throughput. Additionally, an analysis of future trends related to each counter type is provided.

Abstract:Size measurement of micron-sized metal droplet is of great demand in industrial applications, e.g., 3D printing and metal propellant. A dual-beam interferometric particle imaging (DIPI) technique is developed to measure the size of opaque metal droplet, which is adapted from the traditional interferometric particle imaging (IPI) for transparent particles. In DIPI, the studied metal droplet is illuminated by two laser beams from different views, and the laser beams are reflected on the surface of the droplet. An interference pattern of the two reflections is yielded in the far-field that was capable to derive the size of aim droplet. The principle of DIPI is formulated in the framework of physical optics, with system configuration, modeling and data processing algorithm presented. A DIPI system is established to characterize the gallium droplet with size ranging from 300 μm to 500 μm experimentally, and the measured sizes with DIPI is compared with those obtained simultaneously by digital inline holography, which is a standard tool for particle measurement. Comparison shows that the measurements with these two methods are highly consistent, with a standard deviation of 1.7%. DIPI has been demonstrated with high measurement accuracy and flexible implementation of the one-sided arrangement.

Abstract:We report on a novel gate-controlled phototransistor, which is designed to detect high energy ionizing particles. The device is investigated by simulations with TCAD tools. The simulation results exhibit a significant amplification and the magnification can be controlled by the voltage applied to the gate contact. The device can be also proposed to detect the photons.

Abstract:Smoke detectors face the challenges of increasing accuracy, sensitivity, and high reliability in complex use environments to ensure the timeliness, accuracy, and reliability of very early fire detection. The improvement in and innovation of the principle and algorithm of smoke particle concentration detection provide an opportunity for the performance improvement in the detector. This study is a new refinement of the smoke concentration detection principle based on capacitive detection of cell structures, and detection signals are processed by a multiscale smoke particle concentration detection algorithm to calculate particle concentration. Through experiments, it is found that the detector provides effective detection of smoke particle concentrations ranging from 0 to 10% obs/m; moreover, the detector can detect smoke particles at parts per million (PPM) concentration levels (at 2 and 5 PPM), and the accuracy of the detector can reach at least the 0.5 PPM level. Furthermore, the detector can detect smoke particle concentrations at better than 1 PPM accuracy even in an environment with 6% obs/m oil gas particles, 7% obs/m large dust interference particles, or 8% obs/m small dust interference particles.

Abstract:Acquiring properties of microscopic particles helps establish modern physics models and theories, and detectors are the main method. This literature review researches on modern particle physics papers, summarizing the detection principle adopted for four types of particles, concluding the detection principle of the most commonly used detectors, scintillators, and summing up the use of scintillators in the four main kinds of particle detection. Based on the investigation, various kinds of detection materials absorb particles or their secondary particles based on different interaction mechanism in detection, and different kinds of particles have their suitable detectors. Scintillators are classified into three categories based on difference in physical properties, and detect particles by releasing energy during de-excitation in electric pulse signal forms. They can be made into large size, have relatively large detection efficiency and is suitable for ray detection. These ability gain scintillators a wide range of application in detection of the principal types of detectors.

Abstract:Theoretical analysis for recently developed particulate scintillation monitoring technique is presented. The technique makes use of a light beam passing through a stack to the opposite detector. The detector measures not only the average light intensity, but also the temporal variation in the light intensity, which is different from conventional opacity systems. The significant advantage of scintillation monitors is their insensitivity to lens contamination. However, until now theories relevant to the technique have not been found in the literature. In this article, it is first assumed that the number of particles in a light beam passing through stack airflow is a Poisson random variable. Then, by use of Mie's theory and stochastic process theory, a mathematical model for output light intensity, the mathematical expectation and the variance of output light intensity are derived. Finally, an equation for calculating particulate mass concentration is obtained. Theoretical analysis shows that scintillation monitors are insensitive to lens contamination but dependent on particle size distribution. Experiments verified the theoretical results.

Abstract:Recent progress in aerosol science has resulted in more challenging demands in the design of new particle beam introduction systems. In this paper, the concept of a variable orifice aerodynamic lens system is presented and supported by the numerical simulation results. This novel particle beam inlet can serve as either a narrow band pass filter (a particle segregator) that only confines particles with a specific size or a broad band pass filter (a particle concentrator) that allows particles with a wide size range to be concentrated on the beam axis. Following a brief description of the inlet system, computational details are described. Simulation of this inlet has been carried out by the commercial computational fluid dynamics protocol FLUENT. Focusing performance and characteristic of single-thin plate orifices have been first revealed and discussed, and then the dynamics and advantages of using multiple lenses with variable orifices are addressed. It is clearly shown that the focusing size range can be primarily adjusted by varying the working pressure, the orifice geometry, and/or the arrangement of orifices. As a result, a selection of the desired particle focusing size range can be achieved without the need of changing the inlet, thus increasing the versatility of the device for a broad range of applications.

Abstract:A 128-channel picoammeter system is constructed based on instrumentation amplifiers. Taking the advantages of high electric potential and narrow bandwidth in DC energetic charged beam measurements, current resolution better than 5 fA can be achieved. Two 128-channel Faraday cup arrays are built, and are employed for ion and electron beam current distribution measurements. Tests with 60 keV O3+ ions and 2 keV electrons show that it can provide exact boundaries when a positive charged particle beam current distribution is measured.
