Abstract:In this paper, a novel ultrafast-convert variable polarity square-waveform gas tungsten arc welding (VP-GTAW) process with the current converting speed as fast as 50 A/mu s, which can be as much as ten times than that of the conventional variable polarity current is developed recently. It is hope that it can be employed to improve the welding characteristics of high strength aluminum alloys predominantly. Thus, weld porosity and mechanical properties of 2219-T87 Al-Cu alloy welded joints are studied based on the conventional and ultrafast-convert VP-GTAW process, respectively. The experimental results show that, compared with the conventional variable polarity welding, weld porosity is obviously improved in the case of the faster current converting speed and less zero-crossing time. The number of gas pore is reduced and eliminated indeed. Mechanical properties of welded joints are enhanced at a less level due to the softening of weld bond area. Tensile strength and percentage elongation of welded joints are enhanced by about 8. 5% and 14%, respectively. The observation may provide a basic understanding on the variation in weld quality influenced by the variable polarity current converting speed.
