Abstract:Based on a refined shear-lag model, and taking into consideration the axial and radial displacement continuity condition due to complete contact of fibre and matrix at the interface as well as the effects of radial stresses at the interface, not considered in previous work, the analysis of the stress transfer from matrix to fibre in single-fibre composites with perfectly bonded fibre-matrix interface is presented theoretically in this paper for tensile loading parallel to fibre axis.Due to the presence of the fibre, non-uniform distributions of the axial stress are determined in the matrix along the axial and radial directions. The effects of the elastic properties of the fibre and the matrix and of the matrix-to-fibre radius ratio on the stress transfer are discussed in detail. The critical fibre length vs. the fibre-to-matrix modulus ratio is predicted, and a good quantitative agreement is found with the available experimental data.Comparisons with previous analytical and numerical approaches show better agreement with experimental results.
