Abstract:Mass-cultivation of beta-crystals in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) determines their successful application as a flexible piezoelectric generator. Here, we report a crystalline manipulation strategy to initiate the TG-to-TT conformation and the formation of the oriented beta-crystals via microinjection and clearly revealed the dependence of a crystalline structure on injection speed. Especially, a high injection speed amplified the flow contribution to lengthen and thicken the shish, providing more beta-nucleation sites for the orientation growth of beta-crystals. Further, by combining the stability effect of lightly cross-linked PVDF on an entangled structure network, the oriented beta-crystals with a high relative content of 62.0% were generated via the simple continuous melt-processing, endowing the resulting piezoelectric energy harvester with excellent mechanical robustness and compatibility as well as superior piezoelectric property, as evidenced by a high output voltage of 265 V/cm(3) and a piezoelectric sensitivity of 96 V/MPa. Finally, the successful application as a piezoelectric energy harvester was demonstrated by driving the normal operation of electronic watch and thermometer through arm bending and foot stepping, presenting promising potential in self-powering various portable electronic devices via electromechanical conversion from human activity. This work revealed the importance of crystalline control to optimize the piezoelectric properties of PVDF, providing a good fabrication strategy of flow design and material selection for excellent piezoelectric PVDF devices.
