Abstract:Alkaline fuel cell technology has been reinvigorated since the recent rapid development and deployment of anion exchange membranes. Without the "acid-stability" requirement in low pH environments such as that of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, a much wider range of materials including noble metals, non-noble transition metals, and even metal-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media have been developed due to both thermodynamic and kinetic reasons. As compared to the rapidly increasing number of reports on the development of novel catalyst materials, the understanding of the reaction mechanisms of the various ORR electrocatalysts is quite insufficient, and the application and investigation in real alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFCs) is even scarcer. By reviewing the compositions, preparation methods, physiochemical properties and ORR performance of different categories of cathodic electrocatalysts that have emerged in the past few years, some common and intrinsic properties and factors that account for the superior activity of these materials may be extracted and summarized, which may further help to identify the reasons for the kinetic facility of the ORR in alkaline media. Some practical issues of utilization of the promising novel replacement materials for the state-of-the-art Pt-based cathodic electrocatalysts in AAEMFCs are pointed out. In addition to the progress on the development of novel materials with outstanding ORR activity, many and varied compositions and morphologies in one, two and three dimensions, scalable preparation technologies, low cost, and other unique properties, some feedback on the performance and especially the problems of their use as cathodes in AAEMFCs is urgently needed. Such feedback should provide guidelines for the design and manufacture of next-generation electrocatalysts and accelerate the application of AAEMFCs. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. Recent Advances of Carbon Materials in Anodes for Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Abstract:This review summarizes carbon‐based materials in Zn anodes for zinc ion batteries including the energy storage mechanisms, challenges of Zn anodes and the promotional impacts of carbon materials applied in the Zn anodes. Carbon‐based materials have been successfully applied in the zinc ion batteries to improve the energy storage capability and durability of zinc anodes. In this review, four types of carbon materials (conventional carbons, fiber‐like carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene and other 2D carbon materials) are introduced based on the electrode preparation, physicochemical property and battery performance. Several modification strategies are also illustrated, such as heteroatom doping, hierarchical design and metal/carbon composites. Besides the discussion of existing issues of zinc anodes, the structure‐performance relationships are analyzed in depth. Finally, conclusive remarks of this review are summarized and prospects of the future improvement are proposed.

Abstract:AbstractSolid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have been considered as one of the most promising technologies for high‐efficiency electrical energy generation using a variety of fuels, including hydrogen, natural gas, biogas, carbon monoxide, liquid hydrocarbons and solid carbon. Carbon‐fueled SOFCs (CF‐SOFCs) potentially have the highest volume power density because solid carbon has a fuel energy density of 23.95 kWh L−1, which is approximately 10 times higher than that of liquid hydrogen. However, the reactivity and fluid mobility of carbon is significantly lower than those of gaseous fuels; thus, CF‐SOFCs will be kinetically limited at the anode. Herein, we review the development of anodes in CF‐SOFCs from the perspective of material compositions and microstructures. Challenges and research trends based on the fundamental understanding of the materials science and engineering for anode development in CF‐SOFCs are discussed.

Abstract:Direct utilization of hydrocarbon fuels in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) has drawn special attention for high energy conversion efficiency, low cost, and simple devices. However, when fueled with hydrocarbons, SOFCs encountered great difficulty in both performance and stability, which should be attributed to the sluggish hydrocarbon oxidizing reactions, the severe carbon deposition reactions, and the possible sulfur poisoning reactions in the anode. This review summarizes potential anode reactions in hydrocarbon-fueled SOFCs and discusses the possible anode deactivation mechanisms. Further, various strategies to improve the anode performance and stability are reviewed, including substituting alloys or increasing oxide basicity for nickel-based anodes, adopting oxide anodes, and adding catalyst layers. The advantages and challenges of each strategy are discussed. Special attention is paid on properties and models of novel oxide anodes, of which nano-metal catalysts are in-situ exsolved. The publications concerning SOFC anodes, mainly in recent 5 years, are listed and compared in this article.

Abstract:Abstract Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are highly efficient energy conversion devices with the advantage of directly utilizing hydrocarbon fuels. Starting with a short introduction about the fuel challenges and early achievements in this field, this review paper focuses on advances in oxygen‐ion conducting electrolyte‐based SOFC during the last 15 years. Robust anodes immune to carbon deposition are a prerequisite for direct hydrocarbon SOFC. In this paper, direct hydrocarbon SOFC anode materials are classified into three general categories: Ni‐cermet, Cu‐cermet, and oxide‐based anodes. Oxide anodes are further classified in terms of their crystalline structures, namely fluorite, rutile, tungsten bronze, pyrochlore, perovskite, and double perovskite. Achievements and recent advances on these SOFC anodes are reviewed and discussed. The concluding remarks summarize the pros and cons of direct hydrocarbon SOFC anode materials along with the perspective of future research trends.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are at the frontline of clean energy generation technologies to convert chemical energy to electricity with high efficiency. In recent years, because of their fuel flexibility, multiple fuels are fed in anode, e.g., hydrogen, ammonia, hydrocarbons, solid carbon, etc.; in addition, these fuels are always mixed with a certain amount of H2S. Perovskite is one of the most important classes of anode materials being investigated in laboratories, these materials to some extent are immune to coke formation and sulfur poisoning when using hydrocarbon fuels, and retain inherent stability upon reduction and oxidation cycling. Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) represent one of the cleanest and most efficient options for the direct conversion of a wide variety of fuels to electricity. For example, SOFCs powered by natural gas are ideally suited for distributed power generation. However, the commercialization of SOFC technologies hinges on breakthroughs in materials development to dramatically reduce the cost while enhancing performance and durability. One of the critical obstacles to achieving high‐performance SOFC systems is the cathodes for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which perform poorly at low temperatures and degrade over time under operating conditions. Here a comprehensive review of the latest advances in the development of SOFC cathodes is presented: complex oxides without alkaline earth metal elements (because these elements could be vulnerable to phase segregation and contaminant poisoning). Various strategies are discussed for enhancing ORR activity while minimizing the effect of contaminant on electrode durability. Furthermore, some of the critical challenges are briefly highlighted and the prospects for future‐generation SOFC cathodes are discussed. A good understanding of the latest advances and remaining challenges in searching for highly active SOFC cathodes with robust tolerance to contaminants may provide useful guidance for the rational design of new materials and structures for commercially viable SOFC technologies.

Abstract:Solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have attracted considerable attentions due to their high energy conversion efficiency, high power density and extremely low pollution. Perovskite-based materials have been widely used as anode materials for SOFCs because of their high mixed ionic-electronic conductivity (MIEC), favorable catalytic activity for fuel oxidation, and super-carbon coking resistance. The recent progress on the perovskite-based anode materials for SOFCs is reviewed. In order to find a way to satisfy the strict requirements of anode with hydrocarbon fuels, this article is focused on their phase stability, electronic and/or ionic conductivity, and catalytic activity for fuel oxidation. The main problems of current perovskite-based anodes for practical application are pointed out and the possible future research directions are proposed.

Abstract:Solid oxide direct carbon fuel cells (SO-DCFCs) can convert the chemical energy of the carbon fuel directly into electricity with high efficiency, wide fuel applicability and convenience for CO2 capture. SO-DCFCs show promising development in the situation that the energy and environmental issues become increasingly prominent. One of the key issues in SO-DCFC development is the anode which can accelerate carbon conversion, mass transportation within the electrode and impurities tolerance. This paper systematically summarized and analyzed the anode structural features, operating process, material characteristics of three types of SO-DCFC anode, including porous solid anode, molten carbonate anode and liquid metal anode. The liquid metal anode was particularly focused on due to its distinctive advantages in current collection, performance stability and the CO ratio in exhaust gas. Finally, the development trends of the anode for SO-DCFC in the future are discussed.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is an energy conversion device that can directly convert the chemical energy of carbonaceous fuels into electricity. Solving the problem of carbon deposition in the conventional nickel-based anode is essential to improving the performance of SOFC when operating on carbonaceous fuels. Although impressive progress has been made in the development of alternative anode materials, nickel-based anodes with superior catalytic activity for carbonaceous fuels are still the most promising anode for the commercialization of SOFCs. The deposition of a catalyst layer with high catalytic activity for carbonaceous fuels over the nickel-based anode has been demonstrated as an effective way to enhance the performance and long-term stability of hydrocarbon-based SOFC. This review introduces the working principles of the catalyst layers, discusses the recent progress of the catalyst layer materials for hydrocarbon-fueled SOFC and issues of the different catalyst layer materials. Finally, some of the future prospects and challenges of the catalyst layers are summarized in this review article.

Abstract:Abstract There is a growing interest in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) technology among the researchers a promising power generation with high energy efficiency, inflated fuel flexibility, and low environmental impact compared to conventional power generation systems. SOFCs are devices in which the chemical energy is directly converted into electrical energy with negligible emission. SOFCs have low pollution characteristics, high efficiency (~ 60%), and possess expanded fuel selection with little environmental effects. A single cell component of SOFCs is consisting an anode, cathode and an electrolyte which are stacked layer by layer to produce higher amount of power. The dense ceramic electrolyte transporting O 2− ions and fills the space between the electrodes material. Redox reaction occurred at the electrodes side in the presence of fuels. The operating temperatures of SOFCs of 600–1200 °C which produced heat as a byproduct and fast electro-catalytic activity while using nonprecious metals. Many ceramic materials have been investigated for SOFCs electrolyte. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) material was extensively used as dense electrolyte in SOFCs technology. In this review, the article presents; overview of the SOFCs devices and their related materials and mostly reviewed newly available reported.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been recognized as a promising energy conversion device that is expected to play a critical role in solving the global energy and environmental challenges, however, the durability of SOFC under practical working conditions has limited its wide spread deployment and commercialization. Specifically, SOFC cathode often suffers from various contaminations such as Cr and Si arising from the interconnect and sealing materials, respectively, as well as humidity and CO2 which are inherent in ambient air, resulting in serious issues in long-term performance degradation. In this review, the impacts of certain poisoning and corrosions on SOFC cathode are introduced, and the latest results of durability research on the corrosion resistant properties of cathode under CO2, humidity, Cr and Si-containing conditions are reviewed. The poisoning and corrosion mechanism and durability of these aspects are systematically assessed and discussed.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can efficiently generate electricity from a wide variety of fuels, offering unique advantages over the conventional power generation systems based on combustion. In particular, SOFCs can directly use low-cost and readily available hydrocarbon fuels as the energy source. To be commercially competitive, however, breakthroughs in materials development is required. For instance, a durable and electro-catalytically active anode material or catalyst is needed that can facilitate hydrocarbon reforming and avoiding carbon deposition (coking) for SOFCs to operate stably on hydrocarbon fuels, including natural gas, ethanol, and iso-octane. Hydrocarbon fuels, especially liquid ones, have several advantages over hydrogen fuel: low-cost, high volumetric energy density, and ease for transportation and storage. Currently, direct-hydrocarbon SOFCs suffer from severe performance degradation due to carbon deposition. In this presentation, we report a promising anode catalyst for SOFCs operated on various hydrocarbon fuels, from methane to ethanol and iso-octane. The catalyst has been successfully applied to both small button cells and tubular cells with an effective area of about 38 cm 2 . For both cases, our cells demonstrate stable performance for continuous operation of >1,000 hours.

Abstract:<p>The primary components of SOFCs are the anode, cathode, and the electrolyte. Anode is critical in achieving the effective electrochemical oxidation of fuel; thus, its performance can be improved using homogenous powder synthesized through an appropriate method. Various synthesis methods, including solid‐state reaction and wet chemical methods have been used to synthesize anode materials. However, each technique has several advantages and disadvantages. Given that anode is a porous electrode, few criteria, such as high conductivity, tolerance towards carbon deposition, chemical stability, and thermal stability, must be fulfilled. Researchers also modified the existing synthesis method to improve the performance of the anode. In addition, various anode fabrication techniques including physical and colloidal deposition techniques are briefly discussed to understand their effect on the performance of the deposited layers. The aim of this review is to discuss the various anode synthesis and deposition techniques and their influence on the properties and performance of SOFCs.</p>

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising clean and efficient power generation devices. Unlike low temperature fuel cells, SOFCs could run on various alternative fuels such as hydrocarbons, alcohols, solid carbon and ammonia. Currently, several excellent reviews on SOFC developments are available in the literature but a review dedicated to alternative fuels-fed SOFCs is lacking. Herein, we comprehensively review the electrochemical performances and stabilities of SOFCs operating on various fuels. Although comparable maximum power densities to hydrogen were frequently obtained, some degradation problems induced by these fuels influence the long-term stable operation of SOFCs. Therefore, degradation mechanisms are firstly demonstrated, followed by potential strategies from three perspectives of thermodynamics, kinetics and structure to solve degradation issues. It is found that suitable operating conditions, advanced anode materials or optimized anode structures are likely to enhance the cell life span and performance. Besides, remaining challenges and future prospects of SOFCs fed by each fuel are separately elaborated for further improvements. Generally, the new engineering designs, material developments and latest knowledge presented in this review could provide useful guidance for the development and practical commercialization of SOFCs using promising alternative fuels.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy systems such as fuel cells and metal–air batteries can be used as clean power sources in the field of electric transportation and possess great potential in the reduction of various energy and environmental issues. In these systems, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode is the rate-determining factor for overall system performance, and up to now, platinum group metals supported on carbon materials, especially Pt, remain the highest performing and the most practical ORR electrocatalysts. However, corresponding carbonaceous catalyst supports are extremely susceptible to corrosion under electrochemical operation, and therefore, the extensive exploration of alternative stable materials for ORR electrocatalysts with both high electrochemical stability and catalytic performance is essential. Here, noncarbon materials with high corrosion resistance have been explored to substitute traditional carbon supports or even act directly as low-cost non-noble metal electrocatalysts, and based on this, this review will present a comprehensive overview and deep analysis of the recent progress in noncarbon materials, including metals, oxides, nitrides, carbides, sulfides, and so on. Overall, general attributes associated with noncarbon materials include high corrosion resistance, strong metal–support interaction, and impressive porous structure retention. However, major drawbacks include low electrical conductivity, insufficient chemical stability in acidic or alkaline media, and poor electrochemical stability at ORR electrode potentials. To overcome these challenges, this review will also summarize efficient strategies such as combining with highly conductive materials, introducing dopants and forming vacancies to result in promising electrocatalytic ORR performances. Abstract:The commercialization of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technologies requires the development of novel anode materials with high performance and good carbon and sulfur tolerance at intermediate-temperatures, either by modifying the state-of-the-art Ni based anodes, or through exploring alternative metal cermet or ceramic based materials. Wet impregnation is an effective approach for the optimization of traditional Ni-based anode and the incorporation of novel anode species into porous backbones. Due to the lower treatment temperature, the impregnated particles are usually nano-sized, thus exhibiting superior electrochemical performance. In this paper, the superiority and application of these nano-structured anodes are discussed in details, based on the obtained results in our laboratory, as well as some reports in the literatures.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have been attracting remarkable attention as one of the most promising green energy conversion devices in the recent years. However, a high susceptibility of commonly used Ni-based anodes to carbon coking is a major challenge to the successful commercialization of SOFCs. In this study, a robust anode with Ni/TiO2−δ nano-network interfaces is reported, for low-cost SOFCs working at intermediate temperatures. This anode demonstrates an acceptable power density, and good stability with humidified (3% H2O) methane. X-ray diffraction (XRD) Rietveld refinement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images reveal that the Ni/TiO2−δ network-composite anode forms from the in-situ reductive decomposition of NiTiO3. Numerous Ni/TiO2−δ interfaces that facilitate the water adsorption and the water-mediated carbon-removing reactions form during this decomposition process. Density functional theory calculations predict that at the Ni/TiO2−δ interfaces, the dissociated OH from H2O (adsorbed on TiO2−δ ) reacts with C (locating on Ni) to produce CO and H species, which are then electrochemically oxidized (combined with O2−) to CO2 and H2O at the triple-phase boundaries of the anode.
