Abstract:A new natural chalcopyrite reference material TC1725 is prepared for in situ Cu isotope measurement by femtosecond laser ablation multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (fsLA‐MC‐ICP‐MS). Detailed textural examination and major element determination suggest the TC1725 chalcopyrite grains have no growth rim or zoning. The chalcopyrite grain is homogeneous with respect to Cu isotopes based on a large number of measurements performed by bulk solution nebuliser (SN)‐MC‐ICP‐MS, single‐grain SN‐MC‐ICP‐MS and fsLA‐MC‐ICP‐MS. The traditional bulk isotope analyses by SN‐MC‐ICP‐MS yielded a mean δ65Cu value of −0.06 ± 0.03‰ (2s, n = 132). Randomly selected single chalcopyrite grain of TC1725 determined by SN‐MC‐ICP‐MS without column chromatography gave a mean δ65Cu value of −0.06 ± 0.04‰ (2s, n = 188). The intermediate measurement precision for four measurement sessions was better than 0.04‰ (2s), suggesting TC1725 chalcopyrite is suitable as a microanalysis reference material for Cu isotope measurement. The mean δ65Cu value determined by fsLA‐MC‐ICP‐MS analyses on different individual chalcopyrite mounts and strips was −0.06 ± 0.03‰ (2s, n = 393), consistent with the bulk isotope composition within uncertainty. The recommended mean δ65Cu value for this chalcopyrite reference material is −0.06 ± 0.03‰ (2s, n = 132) as determined by bulk SN‐MC‐ICP‐MS.
A Quantity Chalcopyrite Reference Material for in Situ Sulfur Isotope Analysis

Abstract:Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) for sulfur isotope analysis in chalcopyrite is an essential technique with exceptional spatial resolution, which enables precise constraints on mineralization mechanisms. However, the scarcity of matrix-matched chalcopyrite reference materials (RM) for SIMS hinders its accuracy and reliability. This study introduces a large-grained natural chalcopyrite RM (IGSD) for precise sulfur isotope analysis (delta S-34) using SIMS and laser ablation multicollector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS). Petrographic examination and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) results confirm the homogeneity of major elements in the IGSD chalcopyrite grains. The results of in situ analysis at four SIMS laboratories and one LA-MC-ICPMS laboratory and bulk analysis confirm the homogeneity of the S isotope composition in the IGSD chalcopyrite grains. The in situ analysis result is consistent with the result of isotope ratio mass spectroscopy (IRMS), which falls within the same range of uncertainty. This supports the suitability of the IGSD chalcopyrite RM for in situ S isotope analysis. The recommended delta S-34 value of the IGSD chalcopyrite RM, based on IRMS, is 4.21 +/- 0.23% (2SD, n = 30).

Abstract:Chalcopyrite is a widely distributed Fe sulfide in magmatic and magmatic-hydrothermal systems. Stable Fe isotope analysis of Fe-bearing sulfides has been proven to be a powerful tool for tracking the evolution of these deposits and analyzing their mineralization mechanisms. Previous geological studies using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS), which makes it challenging to determine the Fe isotopic values of small or structurally complex chalcopyrite, have shown that the delta Fe-56 values of chalcopyrite fall within a wide range (similar to 4%). In-situ Fe isotope analysis using laser ablation MC-ICP-MS (LA-MC-ICP-MS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), featuring high precision and spatial resolution, can effectively compensate for the above deficiencies. However, the accuracy of in-situ techniques is mainly controlled by matrix-matched reference materials (RMs). To change the present situation in which there is no ideal natural chalcopyrite RMs for Fe isotopic ratio determination, we evaluated the feasibility of natural chalcopyrite (Tianyu-Ccp) collected from the Tianyu magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide deposit (China) as the RM for in-situ Fe isotopic microanalysis. The Tianyu-Ccp chalcopyrite is homogeneous in terms of major elements and Fe isotopic compositions. For in-situ microanalysis, the standard deviation of the Fe isotopic composition is 0.19% (2 SD, n = 86..for delta Fe-56 value. The best recommended Fe isotopic composition, measured by solution MC-ICP-MS, is a delta Fe-56 value of 0.39 +/- 0.07% (2 SD, n = 4), based on four different chalcopyrite grains. Therefore, we propose Tianyu-Ccp chalcopyrite as a potential natural RM for in-situ Fe isotopic ratio analysis and expect it to be used for further tracing the formation and evolution of sulfide deposits.

Abstract:The sulfur isotope system is important in tracing a variety of geochemical processes. However, the availability of matrix‐matched reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope ratio measurement is limited. This study analysed four sulfide specimens to investigate their potential as reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope determination, including three natural sulfide minerals (sphalerite SPH‐1, chalcopyrite GC‐1 and galena NWU‐GN), and one resin preserved pyrite powder (RPPY). These four sulfides were analysed independently in four laboratories using both bulk and microbeam analysis techniques, all of which gave equivalent results within uncertainty with comparable accuracy and precision. The sulfur isotopes of these four sulfides are homogeneous based on a large number of isotope determinations by solution nebulisation multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS) and laser ablation (LA) MC‐ICP‐MS. The mean δ34S values for SPH‐1, RPPY, GC‐1 and NWU‐GN determined by gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GS‐IRMS) and solution nebulisation MC‐ICP‐MS are −7.13 ± 0.41‰ (2s), 3.66 ± 0.24‰ (2s), −0.65 ± 0.28‰ (2s), 28.21 ± 0.17‰ (2s) relative to the Vienna‐Canyon Diablo troilite (V‐CDT) reference value, respectively, and which are proposed as potential preferred values. Over 400 spot analyses performed on randomly selected fragments of each sulfide by LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS yielded highly consistent δ34S values with the preferred values. Thus, SPH‐1, GC‐1, NWU‐GN and RPPY are considered a set of candidate matrix‐matched sulfide reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope determination.

Abstract:Sulfur isotopes serve as critical tracers for understanding the material sources and cycling in earth science. The in situ sulfur isotope ratio analysis by laser ablation multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) has been a proven important technique, yet the precision and accuracy of measurement are limited by matrix-matched reference materials. In this study, we investigated three new potential reference materials (pyrite NWU-Py, gypsum NWU-Gy and arsenopyrite NWU-Apy) for sulfur isotope ratio analysis by LA-MC-ICP-MS. The ultra-fine powders of pyrite, gypsum and arsenopyrite were synthesized into a solid block using the fast-hot-pressing sintering method (FHP). The reliability of these reference materials was evaluated by large quantities of sulfur isotope measurements by LA-MC-ICP-MS, with mean δ 34 S values of 3.48 ± 0.26‰ (2SD, n = 787) for NWU-Py, 18.19 ± 0.32‰ (2SD, n = 290) for NWU-Gy, and −0.19 ± 0.32‰ (2SD, n = 383) for NWU-Apy, which are highly consistent with those obtained from isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Furthermore, the F -testing and H-index indicate that the three materials have excellent homogeneity of sulfur isotope compositions. Therefore, NWU-Py, NWU-Gy, and NWU-Apy can serve as bracketing matrix-matched reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope measurement by LA-MC-ICP-MS.

Abstract:RationaleLaser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) has become a powerful technique for in situ Cu isotopic analysis in natural geological samples. Cu isotopic compositions in natural chalcopyrites have been used to reveal aspects of the mineralization processes directly. However, internationally or commercially available matrix-matched chalcopyrite reference materials for mass fractionation correction or quality control purposes are still lacking for in situ Cu isotopic analysis using LA-MC-ICP-MS. MethodsThree natural chalcopyrites 14ZJ12-1, JGZ-29 and JGZ-78, and one copper metal GBW02141 with different Cu isotopic compositions were investigated as potential microanalytical reference materials by LA-MC-ICP-MS. Ga element was used as an internal standard to correct the mass fractionation of Cu isotopes during LA-MC-ICP-MS analysis. ResultsA large number of Cu isotope ratio measurements using femtosecond LA-MC-ICP-MS were conducted and produced good intermediate precision of delta Cu-65(NIST976) (0.07-0.08 parts per thousand, 2 standard deviations), demonstrating the homogeneous Cu isotopic distribution in the recommended samples. The mean delta Cu-65(NIST976) values of -0.21 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand, 0.46 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand, -0.06 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand and 0.11 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand (2 standard deviations) in 14ZJ12-1, JGZ-29, JGZ-78 and GBW02141, respectively, were obtained using solution-MC-ICP-MS in the four recommended samples. ConclusionsHere, we describe three natural chalcopyrites 14ZJ12-1, JGZ-29, JGZ-78, and one copper metal GBW02141 as the potential Cu isotopic reference materials for LA-MC-ICP-MS analysis. Our analyses demonstrate that these recommended materials have a high degree of elemental and isotopic homogeneity, indicating that they are suitable for microanalysis techniques for data quality assurance or interlaboratory calibration.

Abstract:In this study, a method for solidifying sulfide and sulfate nanoparticulate powder to prepare bracketing standards and samples for in situ S isotopic analysis using laser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) was developed. Sulfide or sulfate powder was transformed into a stable and mechanically resistant target by mixing it with epoxy resin. Using this method, seven bracketing standards with diverse matrix minerals (pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, arsenopyrite, barite, and gypsum) were synthesized in the form of resin-preserved powders (RPPs). The effects of ablation behavior, powder particle size, and homogeneity on the S isotopic ratios in these RPPs were rigorously evaluated. The precision of the delta S-34(VCDT) sulfur isotopic results obtained by LA-MC-ICP-MS was better than 0.47%0 (2SD uncertainty, n >= 20 over 4 months) for the S-bearing mineral RPPs. Finally, the in situ S isotope results of the seven RPPs measured by LA-MC-ICP-MS were consistent with the values obtained using solution nebulizer (SN)-MC-ICP-MS. The isotopic composition and homogeneity of a range of sulfide mineral RPPs (seven minerals referred to above) were characterized for use as potential reference materials. Our method provides the opportunity to prepare brack-eting standards and samples for in situ S isotope analysis for a wide range of sulfur-bearing materials and is particularly appropriate for geologic samples with complex matrices and for which high spatial resolution in situ microbeam analysis is critical. More importantly, this method provides new prospects for the preparation of homogenized reference materials from natural minerals that are urgently needed for matrix-matched calibration and quality control of LA-ICP-MS geochemical and isotope data.

Abstract:In situ microanalysis of the sulfur (S) isotope composition and elemental distribution in sphalerite is important in geochemistry. A matrix-matched reference material is still lacking in situ microanalysis. In this study, a hydrothermal synthesis method combined with hot-press sintering processes was used to synthesize a sphalerite material Sph-LD. A large number of in situ microanalyses, including trace element concentrations and S isotope compositions, were performed on Sph-LD by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) to assess the homogeneity. The LA-MC-ICP-MS results are highly consistent and yield a mean delta 34S value of +17.11 +/- 0.20 parts per thousand (2 SD, n = 560), which is analogous with that measured by IRMS. Microanalysis of element concentrations generally agrees with the data of ICP-MS within 10% for trace elements (relative standard deviation < 10%). These results indicate that Sph-LD is suitable to be a matrix-matched reference material available for quantitative analysis of element concentrations and S isotope measurement of sphalerite using LA-ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICP-MS. Meanwhile, the synthetic method introduces a novel concept for the development of standard materials.
Development of Pressed Sulfide Powder Tablets for in Situ Sulfur and Lead Isotope Measurement Using LA-MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:Controlling the accuracy and precision of sulfur and lead isotopic compositions in natural sulfide minerals requires the use of well-characterized reference materials with matrices similar to those of the unknown samples being analyzed. However, it is often a challenge to prepare natural or synthetic reference materials with homogeneous isotope compositions on a micro-scale. Herein, we report a novel method to synthesize homogeneous sulfide reference materials in the form of nano-particulate pressed sulfide powder tablets (PSPTs). Non-matrix-matched external calibration was used to obtain accurate and precise lead isotopic ratios, while mass bias was corrected using a standard-sample bracketing method and a thallium standard solution doping process. In situ analysis of lead isotopic ratios of PSPTs using laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) yielded good external precisions of <0.026% for Pb-207,Pb-208/Pb-206 and <0.057% for Pb-206,Pb-207,Pb-208/Pb-204 (2RSD). Meanwhile, the standard deviations of results afforded by LA-MC-ICP-MS were better than 0.41%. for S-34/S-32 (2SD). The in situ analytical results of PSPTs were consistent with the values obtained using solution nebulizer MC-ICP-MS, thus demonstrating the reliability and robustness of our analytical protocol. This method can also be used to synthesize different material matrices with homogeneous sulfur and lead isotopes to correct mass bias when using standard-sample bracketing for in situ analysis. Abstract:As the application of the rhenium–osmium (Re‐Os) chronometer in low‐level (low Re mass fraction) sulfides becomes more popular, there is increasingly a need for a corresponding reference material for analytical quality control. This study presents a new low‐level, highly radiogenic chalcopyrite reference material for Re‐Os geochronology. Chalcopyrite was acquired from the Xiaotongchang (XTC) copper deposit in Yun’nan Province, China. Homogeneity tests were used by performing Re‐Os analyses on eleven randomly selected aliquots of powdered chalcopyrite using ICP‐MS. We also performed stability tests on four bottles of powdered chalcopyrite samples over a period of 36 months. The results from analysis of variance and Student’s t‐test indicated that the XTC sample was homogeneous with respect to Re, 187Os mass fractions and model age. Three laboratories participated in an inter‐laboratory comparison scheme for certification, performed using N‐TIMS and MC‐ICP‐MS, and employing two different spiking techniques. The reported values for model ages obtained for the XTC chalcopyrite in this study resulted in an age RM value of 229.3 ± 3.7 Ma at the 95% confidence level (95% conf.). Additionally, Re and 187Os mass fractions of 26.5 ± 1.9 ng g−1 and 63.7 ± 4.7 pg g−1 (95% conf.), respectively, are also reported, providing further information values.
Synthesis of molybdenite reference materials for in situ molybdenum and sulfur isotope measurement using laser ablation MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:Analyzing sulfur (S) and molybdenum (Mo) isotope ratios in molybdenite, the most common sulfide mineral, is crucial for studying the genesis of ore deposits. However, it is necessary to prepare matrix-matched reference materials for molybdenite. In this study, we employed two different techniques, the high-temperature-high-pressure (HTHP) technique and the rapid hot-pressing technique, to synthesize molybdenites and assessed their suitability as reference materials for in situ Mo and S isotope analysis in molybdenite. The molybdenites synthesized through HTHP and rapid hot-pressing exhibit smooth surfaces and dense structures, making them suitable as reference materials for in situ Mo and S isotope analysis, respectively. These synthesized molybdenites exhibit homogeneous Mo and S isotope compositions based on a large number of LA-MC-ICP-MS measurements. The mean δ 98 Mo NIST SRM 3134 values of 0.70 ± 0.06‰ ( n = 4, 2SD) and 0.70 ± 0.05‰ ( n = 4, 2SD) determined by solution nebulization MC-ICP-MS are suggested as recommended δ 98 Mo/ 95 Mo values for Mo-H8 and Mo-P. The mean δ 34 S V-CDT value of −0.22 ± 0.10‰ ( n = 9, 2SD) determined by elemental analyzer isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS) is suggested as a recommended δ 34 S/ 32 S value for Mo-H8 and Mo-P. Therefore, we recommend combining ultrafine powders with a high-temperature–high-pressure technique and/or a rapid hot-pressing technique to synthesize reference materials for isotopic analysis of other minerals.
