Abstract:In this study, a method for solidifying sulfide and sulfate nanoparticulate powder to prepare bracketing standards and samples for in situ S isotopic analysis using laser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) was developed. Sulfide or sulfate powder was transformed into a stable and mechanically resistant target by mixing it with epoxy resin. Using this method, seven bracketing standards with diverse matrix minerals (pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, arsenopyrite, barite, and gypsum) were synthesized in the form of resin-preserved powders (RPPs). The effects of ablation behavior, powder particle size, and homogeneity on the S isotopic ratios in these RPPs were rigorously evaluated. The precision of the delta S-34(VCDT) sulfur isotopic results obtained by LA-MC-ICP-MS was better than 0.47%0 (2SD uncertainty, n >= 20 over 4 months) for the S-bearing mineral RPPs. Finally, the in situ S isotope results of the seven RPPs measured by LA-MC-ICP-MS were consistent with the values obtained using solution nebulizer (SN)-MC-ICP-MS. The isotopic composition and homogeneity of a range of sulfide mineral RPPs (seven minerals referred to above) were characterized for use as potential reference materials. Our method provides the opportunity to prepare brack-eting standards and samples for in situ S isotope analysis for a wide range of sulfur-bearing materials and is particularly appropriate for geologic samples with complex matrices and for which high spatial resolution in situ microbeam analysis is critical. More importantly, this method provides new prospects for the preparation of homogenized reference materials from natural minerals that are urgently needed for matrix-matched calibration and quality control of LA-ICP-MS geochemical and isotope data.

Abstract:The isotopic composition of sulfur is a vital tracer used in the Earth and planetary sciences. In this study, the laser-and ICP-induced isotopic fractionation in S-rich minerals (sulfides and elemental S) with different matrices was investigated by using 257 nm femtosecond (fs) and 193 nm ArF excimer nanosecond (ns) laser ablation systems coupled to a Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS. Compared to ns-LA-MC-ICP-MS, higher sensitivity (1.4-2.4 times) under similar instrumental conditions and better precision (similar to 1.6-fold) under the same signal intensity condition were achieved by fs-LA-MC-ICP-MS. In addition, a fs-laser provides less fluence and matrix dependent S isotopic fractionation, and more stable transient isotopic ratios compared to a ns-laser. Better results acquired by fs-LA-MC-ICP-MS were attributed to the smaller size of particles and less thermal effect produced by using the fs-laser, which were evidenced by the morphologies of the ablation craters and ejected aerosol particles of P-S-1 (the pressed powder pellet of IAEA-S-1) and PPP-1 (a pyrite single crystal from the Sukhoi Log deposit). The ICP-induced isotopic fractionation (matrix effect) was still found in fs-LA-MC-ICP-MS under the maximum sensitivity conditions. However, a significant reduction of the matrix effect was obtained under robust plasma conditions at a lower makeup gas flow rate (0.52-0.54 l min(-1)) relative to the maximum sensitivity condition (0.6 l min(-1)) for S isotope analysis. This could be ascribed to the particles that not only pass into the higher temperature ICP for a longer residence time at a lower makeup gas flow rate that resulted in more efficient vaporization of the particles, but also experience a more robust plasma induced by adding 4-6 ml min(-1) N-2 into the plasma. Furthermore, under the robust conditions, the results of six reference materials with different matrices obtained by fs-LA-MC-ICP-MS with non-matrix matched calibration with a spot size of 20-44 mm showed excellent agreement with the reference values (the accuracy of 0.01-0.15 parts per thousand for delta S-34 and 0.11-0.45 parts per thousand for delta S-33 and the precision of 0.16-0.40 parts per thousand (2 s) for delta S-34 and 0.35-0.78 parts per thousand (2 s) for delta S-33) and the mass-dependent fractionation line, validating the applicability of the proposed approach for providing high-quality in situ isotope data (delta S-33 and delta S-34) of sulfides and elemental sulfur at high spatial resolution using non-matrix matched analysis.

Abstract:We herein report the coupling of a nanosecond laser ablation system with a large-scale multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (Nu1700 MC-ICPMS, NP-1700) and a conventional Nu Plasma II MC-ICPMS (NP-II) for the simultaneous laser ablation and determination of in situ S and Pb isotopic compositions of sulfide minerals. We found that the required aerosol distribution between the two spectrometers depended on the Pb content of the sample. For example, for a sulfide containing 100-3000 ppm Pb, the aerosol was distributed between the NP-1700 and the NP-II spectrometers in a 1:1 ratio, while for lead contents > 3000 and < 100 ppm, these ratios were 5:1 and 1:3, respectively. In addition, S isotopic analysis showed a pronounced matrix effect, so a matrix-matched external standard was used for standard-sample bracketing correction. The NIST NBS 977 (NBS, National Bureau of Standards; NIST, National Institute of Standards & Technology) Tl (thallium) dry aerosol internal standard and the NIST SRM 610 (SRM, standard reference material) external standard were employed to obtain accurate results for the analysis of Pb isotopes. In tandem experiments where airflow conditions were similar to those employed during stand-alone analyses, small changes in the aerosol carrier gas flow did not significantly influence the accurate determination of S and Pb isotope ratios. In addition, careful optimization of the flow ratio of the aerosol carrier (He) and makeup (Ar) gases to match stand-alone analytical conditions allowed comparable S and Pb isotope ratios to be obtained within an error of 2 s analytical uncertainties. Furthermore, the results of tandem analyses obtained using our method were consistent with those of previously reported stand-alone techniques for the S and Pb isotopes of chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite, thus indicating that this method is suitable for the simultaneous analysis of S and Pb isotopes of natural sulfide minerals, and provides an effective tool to determine S and Pb isotope compositions of sulfides formed through multi-stage deposition routes.

Abstract:In situ microanalysis of the sulfur (S) isotope composition and elemental distribution in sphalerite is important in geochemistry. A matrix-matched reference material is still lacking in situ microanalysis. In this study, a hydrothermal synthesis method combined with hot-press sintering processes was used to synthesize a sphalerite material Sph-LD. A large number of in situ microanalyses, including trace element concentrations and S isotope compositions, were performed on Sph-LD by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) to assess the homogeneity. The LA-MC-ICP-MS results are highly consistent and yield a mean delta 34S value of +17.11 +/- 0.20 parts per thousand (2 SD, n = 560), which is analogous with that measured by IRMS. Microanalysis of element concentrations generally agrees with the data of ICP-MS within 10% for trace elements (relative standard deviation < 10%). These results indicate that Sph-LD is suitable to be a matrix-matched reference material available for quantitative analysis of element concentrations and S isotope measurement of sphalerite using LA-ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICP-MS. Meanwhile, the synthetic method introduces a novel concept for the development of standard materials.

Abstract:Rationale A novel laser ablation‐isotope ratio mass spectrometry (LA‐IRMS) method for in situ analysis of sulfur isotopes in sulfides has been developed. Instead of the in situ reaction applied by the traditional laser microprobe, the analyte gas preparation in this method is separated temporally and spatially from the LA, resulting in improved precision and accuracy. Methods Our LA‐IRMS system combines an ultraviolet LA system, an elemental analyzer (EA), a custom‐built cryogenic concentration system, a continuous‐flow interface, and an IRMS. The sulfide aerosol particles generated from LA were transferred by a helium carrier gas from the ablation cell into the reaction tube and were then converted into SO 2 . Subsequently, SO 2 was enriched in two cold traps and was finally introduced into the ion source of the IRMS through the continuous‐flow interface. Results We measured three synthetic and four natural sulfide reference materials to test the performance of this method. Precisions of ±0.25‰–±0.48‰ and ±0.32‰–±0.64‰ (1SD, n = 5) for δ 34 S values of synthetic and natural sulfide standards can be obtained for spot sizes ranging from 64 to 80 μm. Measured values and their recommended values showed a good linear relationship ( R 2 within 0.998 and 0.9995) with the slope of approaching unity (within 1.0509 and 1.1313). Conclusions Data from the measurement of reference materials showed that the precision and accuracy of our method were satisfactory. This method is a powerful tool for in situ sulfur isotope measurement of sulfides and can be further applied to in situ carbon and oxygen isotope analyses.

Abstract:Controlling the accuracy and precision of sulfur and lead isotopic compositions in natural sulfide minerals requires the use of well-characterized reference materials with matrices similar to those of the unknown samples being analyzed. However, it is often a challenge to prepare natural or synthetic reference materials with homogeneous isotope compositions on a micro-scale. Herein, we report a novel method to synthesize homogeneous sulfide reference materials in the form of nano-particulate pressed sulfide powder tablets (PSPTs). Non-matrix-matched external calibration was used to obtain accurate and precise lead isotopic ratios, while mass bias was corrected using a standard-sample bracketing method and a thallium standard solution doping process. In situ analysis of lead isotopic ratios of PSPTs using laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) yielded good external precisions of <0.026% for Pb-207,Pb-208/Pb-206 and <0.057% for Pb-206,Pb-207,Pb-208/Pb-204 (2RSD). Meanwhile, the standard deviations of results afforded by LA-MC-ICP-MS were better than 0.41%. for S-34/S-32 (2SD). The in situ analytical results of PSPTs were consistent with the values obtained using solution nebulizer MC-ICP-MS, thus demonstrating the reliability and robustness of our analytical protocol. This method can also be used to synthesize different material matrices with homogeneous sulfur and lead isotopes to correct mass bias when using standard-sample bracketing for in situ analysis. Abstract:Abstract The accurate measurement of trace element concentrations in natural sulphides by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) has been limited by the lack of matrix-matched calibration standards. The synthesis of a standard, IMER-1, by incorporating four minor and 34 trace elements into a chalcogenide glass matrix Ge28Sb12S60 is reported here. Chemical analysis by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), LA-ICP-MS, solution ICP-MS, and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) confirmed the excellent homogeneity of major elements (1-σ relative standard deviation (RSD) <1% for S, Sb and Ge) and acceptable homogeneity of most trace elements (1-σ RSD <10%). The standard was validated by analysing trace-elements concentrations in three geological pyrite specimens using IMER-1 as the calibration standard and comparing the results to previously reported values also determined by LA-ICP-MS but using a different calibration standard, STDGL2b-2. The results suggest that IMER-1 may be an appropriate calibration standard for LA-ICPMS analysis of trace elements in natural sulphides.

Abstract:Lead isotopic compositions of international silicate glasses, feldspar and copper-based samples are obtained using femtosecond laser ablation multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fLA-MC-ICPMS). Some international glass standards for the microanalysis are applied to evaluate the method reported here. The Pb isotopic composition of these NIST glasses (SRM 610, 612, 614), USGS (BHVO-2G, BCR-2G, BIR-1G and GSD-1G) and MPI-DING glasses (GOR132-G, KL2-G, T1-G, StHs60/80-G) agree well with recommended values in 2 s error. One of 15 copper-based metals is found to have homogenized Pb isotope data and can be used as an external calibration standard and quality control sample for chalcopyrite, ancient coins, etc., to trace the genesis of metal deposit and culture exchange among different dynasties (GBW02137, 208Pb/204Pb = 37.9661 ± 0.0005 (2 s), 207Pb/204Pb = 15.5770 ± 0.0002 (2 s), 206Pb/204Pb = 17.7462 ± 0.0002 (2 s)). We also prepared a feldspar glass to serve as the external calibration standard/QC for Pb isotope analysis using fLA-MC-ICPMS.
New Potential Sphalerite, Chalcopyrite, Galena and Pyrite Reference Materials for Sulfur Isotope Determination by Laser Ablation‐MC‐ICP‐MS

Abstract:The sulfur isotope system is important in tracing a variety of geochemical processes. However, the availability of matrix‐matched reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope ratio measurement is limited. This study analysed four sulfide specimens to investigate their potential as reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope determination, including three natural sulfide minerals (sphalerite SPH‐1, chalcopyrite GC‐1, galena NWU‐GN), and one resin preserved pyrite powder (RPPY). These four sulfides were analysed independently in four laboratories using both bulk and microbeam analysis techniques, all of which gave equivalent results within uncertainty with comparable accuracy and precision. The sulfur isotopes of these four sulfides are homogeneous based on a large number of isotope determinations by solution nebulisation multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS) and laser ablation (LA) MC‐ICP‐MS. The mean δ34S values for SPH‐1, RPPY, GC‐1 and NWU‐GN determined by gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GS‐IRMS) and solution nebulisation MC‐ICP‐MS are ‐7.13 ± 0.41‰ (2s), 3.66 ± 0.24‰ (2s), ‐0.65 ± 0.28‰ (2s), 28.21 ± 0.17‰ (2s) relative to the Vienna‐Canyon Diablo troilite (V‐CDT) reference value, respectively, and which are proposed as potential preferred values. Over 400 spot analyses performed on randomly selected fragments of each sulfide by LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS yielded highly consistent δ34S values with the preferred values. Thus, SPH‐1, GC‐1, NWU‐GN and RPPY are considered a set of candidate matrix‐matched sulfide reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope determination.

Abstract:Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) for sulfur isotope analysis in chalcopyrite is an essential technique with exceptional spatial resolution, which enables precise constraints on mineralization mechanisms. However, the scarcity of matrix-matched chalcopyrite reference materials (RM) for SIMS hinders its accuracy and reliability. This study introduces a large-grained natural chalcopyrite RM (IGSD) for precise sulfur isotope analysis (delta S-34) using SIMS and laser ablation multicollector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS). Petrographic examination and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) results confirm the homogeneity of major elements in the IGSD chalcopyrite grains. The results of in situ analysis at four SIMS laboratories and one LA-MC-ICPMS laboratory and bulk analysis confirm the homogeneity of the S isotope composition in the IGSD chalcopyrite grains. The in situ analysis result is consistent with the result of isotope ratio mass spectroscopy (IRMS), which falls within the same range of uncertainty. This supports the suitability of the IGSD chalcopyrite RM for in situ S isotope analysis. The recommended delta S-34 value of the IGSD chalcopyrite RM, based on IRMS, is 4.21 +/- 0.23% (2SD, n = 30).

Abstract:Sulfur isotopes serve as critical tracers for understanding the material sources and cycling in earth science. The in situ sulfur isotope ratio analysis by laser ablation multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) has been a proven important technique, yet the precision and accuracy of measurement are limited by matrix-matched reference materials. In this study, we investigated three new potential reference materials (pyrite NWU-Py, gypsum NWU-Gy and arsenopyrite NWU-Apy) for sulfur isotope ratio analysis by LA-MC-ICP-MS. The ultra-fine powders of pyrite, gypsum and arsenopyrite were synthesized into a solid block using the fast-hot-pressing sintering method (FHP). The reliability of these reference materials was evaluated by large quantities of sulfur isotope measurements by LA-MC-ICP-MS, with mean δ 34 S values of 3.48 ± 0.26‰ (2SD, n = 787) for NWU-Py, 18.19 ± 0.32‰ (2SD, n = 290) for NWU-Gy, and −0.19 ± 0.32‰ (2SD, n = 383) for NWU-Apy, which are highly consistent with those obtained from isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Furthermore, the F -testing and H-index indicate that the three materials have excellent homogeneity of sulfur isotope compositions. Therefore, NWU-Py, NWU-Gy, and NWU-Apy can serve as bracketing matrix-matched reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope measurement by LA-MC-ICP-MS.

High Precision In-Situ Pb Isotopic Analysis of Sulfide Minerals by Femtosecond Laser Ablation Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:An in-situ microanalysis of Pb isotopic compositions in sulfide minerals is carried out by using femtosecond laser-ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(fs LA-MC-ICP-MS).High-temperature-activated carbon was used to filter Hg contained in the carrier gas,which reduced the Hg background signal by 48%and also lowered the detection limit of the analysis.Fractionation and mass discrimination effects existing in the ICP-MS analytical processes were corrected using an internal reference Tl in conjunction with an external reference NIST SRM 610.The proposed method was used to analyze the Pb isotopic compositions of chalcopyrite,pyrite,and sphalerite from the Dulong Sn-Zn-In polymetallic ore district.The results showed that in this ore district,the sulfide minerals and different grains of the same sulfide mineral show a large variation in Pb content up to 1000-fold.The studied pyrites show relatively higher Pb contents and homogeneous Pb isotopic compositions,whereas the sphalerites have low Pb contents but most variable Pb isotopic compositions.It is suggested that the large variation of Pb isotopic composition may reflect a late hydrothermal superimposition on the primary sulfide formation.In addition,radiogenic Pb accumulated by radioactive decay of trace amounts of U over time in the host minerals may also be one of the causes for the large variation range of Pb content and Pb isotopic composition of those low-Pb sphalerites.Chalcopyrite and sphalerite grains with Pb content greater than 10 ppm presented a consistent Pb isotopic distribution,whereas all the sulfide grains with Pb content greater than 100 ppm had consistent Pb isotopic composition within 2s measurement uncertainties.The in-situ analysis of Pb isotopic composition agreed well with the results obtained by conventional chemical methods within2s measurement uncertainties,indicating that the data obtained by fs LA-MC-ICP-MS are reliable.Additionally,this study indicates that the Pb isotopic composition could truthfully record the source of ore-forming minerals only for sulfide minerals with high Pb content.On the contrary,the Pb isotopic composition of low-Pb sulfide minerals may be affected by trace amounts of U in the host minerals that may lead to a highly radiogenic Pb isotope ratio.Alternatively,it is also possible that late fluid metasomatic overprinting may alter the Pb isotopic compositions.

Abstract:The sulfur isotope system is important in tracing a variety of geochemical processes. However, the availability of matrix‐matched reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope ratio measurement is limited. This study analysed four sulfide specimens to investigate their potential as reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope determination, including three natural sulfide minerals (sphalerite SPH‐1, chalcopyrite GC‐1 and galena NWU‐GN), and one resin preserved pyrite powder (RPPY). These four sulfides were analysed independently in four laboratories using both bulk and microbeam analysis techniques, all of which gave equivalent results within uncertainty with comparable accuracy and precision. The sulfur isotopes of these four sulfides are homogeneous based on a large number of isotope determinations by solution nebulisation multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS) and laser ablation (LA) MC‐ICP‐MS. The mean δ34S values for SPH‐1, RPPY, GC‐1 and NWU‐GN determined by gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GS‐IRMS) and solution nebulisation MC‐ICP‐MS are −7.13 ± 0.41‰ (2s), 3.66 ± 0.24‰ (2s), −0.65 ± 0.28‰ (2s), 28.21 ± 0.17‰ (2s) relative to the Vienna‐Canyon Diablo troilite (V‐CDT) reference value, respectively, and which are proposed as potential preferred values. Over 400 spot analyses performed on randomly selected fragments of each sulfide by LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS yielded highly consistent δ34S values with the preferred values. Thus, SPH‐1, GC‐1, NWU‐GN and RPPY are considered a set of candidate matrix‐matched sulfide reference materials for in situ sulfur isotope determination.
