Abstract:To enhance the low-temperature denitration efficiency of α-Fe2O3, Ce/Cu-supported Ce/α-Fe and Cu/α-Fe were synthesized and applied to NH3-SCR denitration. The findings indicate that Ce and Cu significantly improve the low-temperature denitration performance of α-Fe2O3, with the Cu/α-Fe achieving over 95 % catalytic efficiency between 240 and 360 °C. Characterization results show strong interactions and electronic transfer effects between Ce/Cu and Fe, which significantly reduce the crystallinity of α-Fe2O3 and generate more surface Fe3+ and chemisorbed oxygen. For Cu/α-Fe, its low-temperature denitration performance is largely dependent on its redox capacity and surface acidity. In contrast, the improved low-temperature denitration performance of Ce/α-Fe is mainly attributed to its significantly enhanced surface acidity. Moreover, after loading Ce and Cu, the types of surface adsorbed NOx species are increased. Particularly for Cu/α-Fe, monodentate nitrate is newly generated, which are key active species for low-temperature catalytic activity, explaining why Cu/α-Fe exhibits the best low-temperature catalytic performance.

Abstract:One of the main challenges for NH3-SCR of NOx at low temperatures is developing a catalyst with exceptional low-temperature catalytic activity. Herein, four kinds of clay minerals including halloysite (Hte), Ca-montmorillonite (Ca-Mte), chlorite (Cte), and Na-montmorillonite (Na-Mte) were used as supports and impregnated with Fe and Cu to synthesize Fe-Cu/Hte, Fe-Cu/Ca-Mte, Fe-Cu/Cte, and Fe-Cu/Na-Mte catalysts, respectively. Within a temperature range of 180-240 degrees C, the resultant Fe-Cu/Hte catalyst produced more than 98 % NOx conversion and demonstrated the best low-temperature NH3-SCR catalytic performance. The characterization results indicated that the weakened crystallinity of active species, high ratios of Fe3+/Fe and Cu+/Cu, and more surface absorbed oxygen species, as well as excellent low-temperature redox ability and surface acidity all contributed to its outstanding low-temperature catalytic activity. The in situ DRIFT study at 240 degree celsius showed that two forms of the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism existed on the Fe-Cu/Hte and Fe-Cu/Cte catalysts, while the E-R and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) processes were both involved over the Fe-Cu/Ca-Mte and Fe-Cu/Na-Mte catalysts.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 is a highly active catalyst to remove NOx in the emission of diesel-powered engine. However, the enhancement of its stability in high-temperature (HT) hydrothermal conditions is a well-known challenge in application. This work presents a simple strategy to significantly improve its hydrothermal stability under HT hydrothermal condition by mechanically mixing another CHA type zeolite, Cu-SAPO-34. Both the two zeolites are synthesized via one-pot method, mixed in different ratios, and treated in 10% H2O/air at 750 °C for 16 h. The mixed samples are characterized before and after the hydrothermal treatment, and tested in NH3-SCR from 150 to 550 °C. The results show the activity of the hydrothermally treated catalysts increases with the increase of the amount of Cu-SAPO-34 up to 50 wt% in the mixed sample. The hydrothermal stability of Cu-SSZ-13 is obviously enhanced by mixing with Cu-SAPO-34. The dealumination is suppressed during the hydrothermal treatment; the framework and the isolated Cu2+ sites are largely maintained in Cu-SSZ-13. This is attributed to the interaction between the two CHA zeolites during the hydrothermal treatment. We propose the delivery of extra-framework P species from Cu-SAPO-34 to Cu-SSZ-13 is critical to enhance the HT hydrothermal stability.

Abstract:The effect of Mn impregnation on the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3) activity of in situ synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 was investigated in this work. It was found that Mn addition could efficiently improve the low-temperature activity of Cu-SSZ-13. The optimal amount of Mn was 5 wt.%, and NOx conversion was improved by more than 20% over a temperature range of 120 °C to 150 °C. SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-TPR (temperature programmed reduction of H2), NH3-TPD (temperature programmed desorption of NH3) and in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) experiments were conducted to investigate the changes in the zeolite structure, active sites, acid sites and reaction mechanism. The impregnated MnOx species caused a decline in the crystallinity of Cu-SSZ-13 but markedly improved the redox ability. Nitrate and nitrite species were observed in the Mn-modified Cu-SSZ-13, and the formation of these species was thought to cause the observed increase in low-temperature NH3-SCR activity. The results show that the addition of Mn is a promising method for promoting the low-temperature catalytic activity of Cu-SSZ-13.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 has been evidenced to perform well during low temperature range while Fe-SSZ-13 exhibits high NOx conversion at relative high temperatures in standard selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3. Considering the respective advantages of Cu and Fe species, we attempt to combine these two elements to overcome single metal deficiency and to construct a more efficient catalyst for NH3-SCR over a broader temperature window. A series of Fe-Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts were prepared by ion exchange method on the basis of one-pot synthesized CuSSZ-13. The influence of concentrations of Fe(NO3)3 and exchanging time was considered in the preparing process, and the obtained catalysts were applied to test activity under standard SCR reaction. The superior performance with a moderate Fe/Cu ratio of 1.29 could be attributed to the co-effect of multiple active species, namely Cu(OH)+ and Fe(OH)2+ as well as oligomeric iron. The dominant Cu(OH)+ species in Fe-Cu-SSZ-13-1.29 may account for the excellent low temperature (< 200 oC) performance, while isolated Cu2+ and abundance of Fe ion monomers/oligomer species may be active at higher temperatures. Larger Fe2O3 particles descend the NOx elimination either by blocking the pores in zeolites or increasing the NH3 oxidation ability at high temperature. In-situ DRIFTS studies showed several important intermediates (ad-NO2, NO+, NO3- , NO2- , Cu(Fe)-NH3, NH4NO3), and both nitrite and nitrate route are proposed to be the standard SCR reaction mechanism at low temperatures.
In-situ One-Pot Synthesis of Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 Catalysts with Highly Efficient NH3-SCR Catalytic Performance as Well as Superior H2O/SO2 Tolerability

Abstract:Series of Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalysts with variable Ti content were prepared via convenient in-situ one-pot synthesizing strategy. Systematic evaluations of the NH 3 -SCR catalytic performance over the obtained catalysts were conducted. Results show that Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 with appropriate Ti content (in the current work Ti 0.81 /Cu 2.15 -SSZ-13) could serve as capable candidate for NH 3 -SCR application, as it exhibits highly efficient catalytic activity with expanded operation temperature window width from 140 to 540 °C, nearly 100% N 2 selectivity, as well as superior tolerability against water vapor and SO 2 . Further structural/physicochemical characterizations demonstrate that the obtained Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts possess well-crystallized characteristic chabazite (CHA) structure. Isolated Cu 2+ and monomeric Ti 4+ are recognized as the primary active species, as the former mainly contributes to SCR reaction at low temperatures, while the latter are conducive for improving the high temperature SCR activity. Ti over doping would result in partial destruction of the zeolite structure, occupation of Cu 2+ cation sites and formation of surface aggregated TiO x , thus leading to unsatisfactory NH 3 -SCR performances. Moreover, formation of agglomerated CuO x species during hydrothermal ageing and blockage of surface active sites by sulfate species formed during SO 2 pretreatment are considered responsible for activity deterioration in the tolerability tests.

Abstract:Effects Si/Al ratio on catalytic performance for NH3-SCR of one-pot synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts are investigated. Catalysts are characterized using various analytical techniques, including H2-TPR, XRD and XRD Rietveld. The result demonstrated that Si/Al ratio had an important impact on content and distribution of active copper species. The best catalyst with Si/Al molar ratio of 10 showed excellent activity and stability. It had the widest temperature window for NH3-SCR.

Abstract:Fe-SSZ-13 has been proven to be a highly efficient catalyst for the ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) of NOx, especially at medium and high reaction temperatures. Nevertheless, the hydrothermal stability of Fe-SSZ-13 catalyst is inferior, limiting its application in vehicle exhaust purification. Impressively, it is found that the hydrothermal stability of Fe-SSZ-13 can be remarkably enhanced (as high as 30% improvement at 300 °C) by in situ introduction of Zr and Fe into initial gels via one-pot synthesis in this work. A small amount of Zr addition (0.31 wt.%) is beneficial for improving the relative crystallinity of Fe-SSZ-13. The characterization results (obtained by 27Al NMR, NH3-TPD, UV-vis, XPS and in situ DRIFTS) revealed that Zr doping by a one-pot method would not only enhance the dispersion of active isolated Fe ions but also inhibit the migration and agglomeration of isolated Fe ions during hydrothermal aging, improving the stability of the catalyst. Additionally, the introduction of Zr generates new hydroxy groups and Lewis acid sites, facilitating the formation of reaction intermediates, such as -NH2, -HNO2, -NO2, etc., and promoting the SCR reaction especially over the aged catalyst.

Abstract:Fe-SSZ-13 zeolites were prepared via post-treatment method by using different concentrations of HNO 3 solution. Prior to HNO 3 treatment, Fe-SSZ-13 was synthesized by using Fe(III)-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid as iron source. The evaluation of ammonia-assisted selective catalytic reduction reaction indicates that Fe-SSZ-13 and Cu-Fe-SSZ-13 after HNO 3 treatment show enhanced catalytic performance compared with corresponding initial counterparts, respectively. Particularly, after hydrothermal ageing (HTA), Cu-Fe-SSZ-13-0.4-HTA with optimal HNO 3 concentration of 0.4 M exhibits ∼5% higher NO conversion than Cu-Fe-SSZ-13-0-HTA at 150–250 °C and 450–550 °C. The superior NH 3 -SCR performance of HNO 3 -treated zeolites is attributed to that HNO 3 -treatment method can regulate the distribution of Fe species by decreasing Fe x O y and increasing isolated Fe 3+ content.

Abstract:Series of Fe/Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with different Fe loading content were synthesized by simple one-pot strategy. The obtained catalysts were subjected to selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 and were characterized by various techniques. The results show that Fe0.63/Cu1.50-SSZ-13 catalyst with proper Fe content exhibits excellent catalytic activity with widest operation temperature window from 160 to 580°C, excellent hydrothermal stability as well as good resistance to sulfur poisoning when compared with Cu-SSZ-13, signifying its great potential for practical applications. Further characterizations reveal that the synthesized Fe/Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts present typical chabazite (CHA) structure with good crystallinity, while isolated Cu2+ and monomeric Fe3+ are revealed as the predominant copper and iron species. At low temperatures, isolated Cu2+ species act as primary active sites for SCR reaction, while monomeric Fe3+ species provide sufficient active sites for sustain the SCR activity at high temperature. Moreover, Fe over doping would lead to the damage of zeolite structure, destruction of isolated Cu2+ site, as well as the formation of highly oxidizing Fe2O3, thus causing deterioration of catalytic performances.

Abstract:Different Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts are prepared by one-pot synthesis by changing the crystallization time during the reaction and characterized using various analytical techniques, including H-2-temperature program reduction (H-2-TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result demonstrated that the crystallization time had an important impact on the content and distribution of active copper species. The catalysts with proper crystallization time showed excellent activity and hydrothermal stability for the NH3 selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) reaction and the best crystallization time was about 4 d. In the zeolite, the unstable Cu-A(2+) species may be converted to stable Cu-B(2+) species and the Cu2+ species agglomerated together under high-temperature hydrothermal conditions. In conclusion, the collapse of the zeolite structure and the agglomeration of active Cu2+ species were the main reason for the deterioration of the hydrothermal stability.

Abstract:The improvement of stability is a crucial and challenging issue for industrial catalyst, which affects not only the service time but also the cost of catalyst. This is especially prominent for that applied in harsh environment atmospheres, such as the exhaust of diesel vehicles. Herein, we reported a new strategy to improve the high-temperature hydrothermal stability of Cu-SSZ-13, which is a promising catalyst for the treatment of exhaust emitted from diesel vehicles through the NH3-SCR NOx route. Different from that reported in literature, we managed to improve the high-temperature hydrothermal stability of Cu-SSZ-13 by coating the surface with a nanolayer of stable SiO2 material using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. The coating of SiO2 layers effectively suppressed the leaching of alumina from the SSZ-13 molecular sieve even after the hydrothermal aging at 800 °C for 16 h with 12.5% water in air. Meanwhile, the ultra-thin SiO2 nanolayer does not block the pores of zeolites and affect the catalytic activity of Cu-SSZ-13 contribute to the superiority of the ALD technology.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction mechanisms of Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst prepared using the in-situ IZT method followed both the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism, though it was mainly based on the E-R reaction. In this study, the Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts were synthesized using coal fly ash based zeolite in one step. This study further improved the synthesis process route from coal based solid waste to SCR catalyst, shortened the preparation cycle, and improved catalyst performance.

In this study, the Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts were synthesized using coal fly ash based zeolite in one step. This study further improved the synthesis process route from coal based solid waste to SCR catalyst, shortened the preparation cycle, and improved catalyst performance.

Abstract:The development of Cu ion-exchanged small-pore zeolites with excellent performance and high hydrothermal stability in NH3-SCR reaction is of great importance. However, many frameworks of the small-pore zeolites are Al-rich, for instance, Cu-SSZ-16 zeolite with Si/Al ratio always no more than 5, showing relatively low hydrothermal stability. In this work, inspired by theoretical calculation for the interaction between organic structural directing agents (OSDAs) and zeolite framework, high silica SSZ-16 zeolite with Si/Al ratio at 6.7 was directly synthesized using an economical diquaternary alkylammonium cation as an OSDA. After exchanged with Cu ion, the Cu-SSZ-16 catalyst shows extraordinarily superior performance in NH3-SCR reaction even after hydrothermal aging at 900 degrees C. The designed synthesis combined with excellent performance as well as high hydrothermal stability of the high silica SSZ-16 zeolite might provide an attractive alternative candidate for NH3-SCR catalyst on diesel vehicles and non-road mobile machinery in the future.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-34, both with CHA topology but different compositions, are highly active NH3-SCR catalysts for the abatement of harmful nitrogen oxides from the exhausts of lean-burn engines. However, the former suffers from high preparation cost and worse high-temperature hydrothermal stability, and the latter is limited by its poor low-temperature hydrothermal stability. Herein, a new Cu-CHA composite (named Cu-CHADNL) containing both microenvironments of SSZ-13 and SAPO-34 was synthesized by employing one-pot synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 as Cu source, seeds and part of Si/Al source. The resultant materials have cubic-like morphology, high Si contents, controllable Cu loadings and uniform Si/P/Al/Cu elemental distributions. Solid state MAS NMR, NH3-DRIFTS and H2-TPR demonstrate the coexistence of aluminosilicate and SAPO zones in the Cu-CHADNL crystals. Notably, Cu-CHADNL exhibits high NH3-SCR activity in wide temperature window and robust resistance against both steaming at 800 °C and soaking in 80 °C water. These advantages are owing to the unique composite microstructures of Cu-CHADNL and suggest the material has huge application potential in deNOx process.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalysts were synthesized via one-pot strategies and further doped with different transition metals (TM = Fe, Ti, Ce, Mn) by ion exchange methods. The synthesized catalysts were assessed by tests of NH3-SCR activity, hydrothermal stability, and antisulfur-poisoning ability along with various characterizations including XRD, XPS, and H2-TPR. Results indicate that different dopants significantly affect the catalytic performance. The Fe doped Fe0.86/Cu2.14-SSZ-13 catalyst exhibited an expanded operation temperature window, outstanding high-temperature SCR activity, and increased durability against hydrothermal aging as well as SO2 poisoning, while other dopants such as Mn or Ce seem quite unsatisfactory. Isolated Cu2+ and monomeric Fe3+ are revealed as the major active species contributing to low-temperature NH3-SCR activity and efficient high temperature NO conversion, respectively. TM doping led to substitution of the Cu1 species (isolated Cu2+ near the octatomic ring window) at ion-exchange sites, zeolite framework structure collapse, and migration of active Cu species into more stable sites during hydrothermal aging, as well as agglomeration of Cu/Fe species during SO2 pretreatment. Thus, the TM/Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts presented obvious catalytic activity deterioration after hydrothermal aging or sulfur poisoning.
