Abstract:Leon Simon was born in Adelaide, South Australia, Austradia, in 1945, and studied at the University of Adelaide, where he received a B. Sc. in 1967, and Ph. D. in 1971. To celebrate his sixtieth birthday, the editorial board of the Pure and Applied Math Quarterly has decided to publish two special issues in honor of him.Leon has made profound contributions to geometric analysis, in particular to the structure of singular sets for solutions of variational problems. They are summarized in the citation for his Bocher Memorial Prize of Americian Mathematics Society in 1994 as follows: Powerful methods were developed in the 1960s to establish the partial regularity of minima and critical points of the Plateau problem and later extended to other variational problems such as the harmonic mapping problem. Abstract:John Coates was born in the countryside of New South Wales, Australia, in 1945, and did his undergraduate studies at the Australian National University, Canberra. To celebrate his sixtieth birthday, the editorial board of the Pure and Applied Math Quarterly Journal has decided to publish two special issues in honor of him.John has contributed greatly to number theory, arithmetical algebraic geometry and Iwasawa theory. His 1977 fundamental paper with Andrew Wiles on the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer was “a landmark contribution to number theory which introduced a panoply of new methods into the field of elliptic curves.” His “insights into the Iwasawa theory of the symmetric square of an elliptic curve were instrumental in the recent proof by Wiles of the Shimura-Taniyama conjecture for semistable elliptic curves over Q”. Abstract:CYBER-PHYSICAL system is a system of collaborating computational elements to control physical entities. The coordination and the tight link between computational, virtual and physical resources in cyber-physical system will have a pervasive effect on our everyday life. The development of cyber-physical system will create new opportunities for the introduction of services that will enhance the quality of life of the society as a whole. Research advances in cyber-physical systems promise to transform our world with systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of: effectiveness, adaptability, autonomicity, energy efficiency, precision, reliability, safety, usability, scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. Moreover, recently the sensor web concept came into foreground, aiming at combining distributed sensing with the ubiquitous connectivity and accessibility of the web, therefore facilitating the close interaction of digital world with physical world. The technical challenges of cyber-physical systems are significant, and of high research and practical importance, mainly stemming from the fact that traditionally different groups of scientists deal with this setting without much interaction, using disjoint sets of techniques. Towards merging the cyber and physical world, well-defined analytical models, methodologies and experimental validations are required in order to build systems capable of orchestrating heterogeneous components together in a flexible and efficient way. The control systems community has been consistently engaged in the development of theories, tools, and practices for the analysis and the design of cyber-physical systems. The aim of this special issue is to provide a window into the recent developments of the fundamentals and applications of control of cyber-physical systems.

Abstract:With this last issue of 2008, the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE) has completed its 20 years of publication, and the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) has completed the second term of his TKDE EiC position. It has been four years since he assumed this position in January 2005. Thanks to the hard work and outstanding efforts of our Associate Editors, reviewers, authors, and support staff from the IEEE Computer Society Publications Office, TKDE has further strengthened its "premier" status over the past four years in the field of knowledge and data engineering, including data mining, database systems, and knowledge engineering. Our paper submission rate has continued to increase, and is now far higher than any other journal in data mining, database systems, and knowledge engineering. The journal impact factor exceeded 2.0 in 2006 for the first time, and ranks #3 in all IEEE Computer Society transactions in the most recent 2007 journal impact factors. The EiC would like to take this opportunity to review some of the major activities that have taken place over the past four years, some of which are based on the changes reported in his previous editorials.

Abstract:Chris Cosner turned 60 on June 3, 2012 and now, at age 62, continues his stellar career at the interface of mathematics and biology. He received his Ph.D. in 1977 at the University of California, Berkeley under the direction of Murray Protter, winning the Bernard Friedman prize for the best dissertation in applied mathematics. From 1977 until 1982 he was on the faculty of Texas A&M University. In 1982 he left A&M to join the faculty of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Miami as Associate Professor, rising to the rank of Professor in 1988. The academic year 2013-2014 marked his 32nd year of distinguished service to the University of Miami and its research and pedagogical missions. Abstract:Publication of the Journal of Differential Geometry began in 1967, and for the past 40 years it has nourished, coming to be regarded as the leading journal on the subject.In 1980, C.-C. Hsiung asked me to be chief editor of the JDG. I was reluctant, for many obstacles presented themselves. However, many great geometers came to the support of the journal. Almost immediately after establishing a new editorial board, we were able to obtain the highly regarded works of Freedman, Donaldson, Schoen, Uhlenbeck, Witten, etc. The editors continue to be deeply grateful for the tremendous support lent by these authors and many others. The quality of the JDG is as strong as ever.(A few years ago, in fact, we found it necessary to increase the journal's size, that we might do justice to the depth and excellence of the submissions received.)
