Abstract:The coupling of piezoelectric and semiconducting properties gives rise to the effect of piezotronics, which regulates charge carrier transport through the modulation of energy barriers at contact interfaces. With piezoelectric semiconductors as the building blocks, extensive progress has been made, covering the fundamental physics level, the individual device level as well as the integrated system level, effectively establishing a new field of study. By manipulating interfacial processes incorporating ionic charges, free electrons/holes, photons and chemicals, novel interdisciplinary effects have been studied and reported. This article aims at reviewing the milestone progress and offering perspectives of this new field of study in applications for multi-functional sensing systems, human-electronics interfacing, MEMS, energy harvesting and so on.

Abstract:Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc. , the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure–function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

Measurement Science and Technology

Abstract:Dear authors, reviewers and readers of Measurement Science and Technology , I would like to thank all those who have published papers with us in 2013, and offer a special thanks to those of you who have given up much of your precious time and kindly reviewed articles for the journal. 2013 was of course a very special year for the journal, marking the 90th anniversary of the journal's foundation, as Journal of Scientific Instruments. In order to mark the anniversary we started the year with a historical perspective of the journal [1], and a historical review of 90 years of dielectric properties measurement of materials [2]. The celebrations continued with a stimulating meeting at the Institute of Physics in London in March, entitled 'Frontiers of Measurement'. In keeping with the multidisciplinary ethos of the journal, the speakers covered a diverse range of topics, all linked by the common language of measurement science. Patrick Gill of NPL talked about atomic clocks, Bruce Tromberg of the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic covered biophotonics, Roger Bisby of the University of Salford lectured on developments in biochemical techniques, Ivan Marusic of the University of Melbourne spoke on fluids and Mervyn Miles of the University of Bristol described recent developments in atomic force microscopy. Nicola Gulley, Editorial Director of IOP Publishing (IOPP), briefed the meeting on some of the latest developments in the world of scientific publishing. The meeting ended with a presentation to Sharon D'Souza, outgoing Publisher of the journal, and a welcome for Ian Forbes who has taken over the role. On behalf of all the Editorial Board I would like to offer a very special thanks to Sharon for all her great work for the journal over many years and wish her every success in her new IOPP posts as Publisher of Reports in Progress in Physics and the recently launched Methods and Applications in Fluorescence. Ian Forbes comes to the journal with a PhD in Physics from Heriot-Watt University and a wealth of relevant experience from having been Publisher of IOPP's Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering . Looking forward, I would like to take this opportunity to update you all on some of what is in store in the journal in 2014. This volume opens with three topical reviews on the application of energy harvesting, both in buildings and in the medical field, and on quantum cascade lasers. These continue the journal's tradition of publishing both the latest research papers and excellent articles designed to summarize activities in a research field, which are useful to both the expert and beginner alike. We will also continue to have a strong programme of special features on the pick of research presented at conferences around the globe, including the 11th International Symposium on Measurement Technology and Intelligent Instruments (ISMTII), Nanoscale 2013 and Sensors and their Applications XVII. In a broad-interest journal such as Measurement Science and Technology , it is necessary to have the advice of a wide range of experts, and I consider myself fortunate to be able to count on the assistance of our distinguished Editorial Board. The range and depth of expertise and experience of these researchers exists to serve all users of the journal, and is truly inspiring. I want also to acknowledge the diligent work of our reviewers and the editorial and production staff at IOPP. Through their hard work in 2013 the average time from submission of a manuscript to delivery of a first-stage publication decision has been reduced to under six weeks for the first time, with the average time for an accepted paper to go online being less than one month. Most important of all we should not forget that the journal is here to serve its users-–the authors and readers across research communities in industry, government and academic sectors who all share a common passion for measurement, whatever their discipline. If you have ideas on how we might do this even better then please do not hesitate to contact me. Abstract:As a notable example of the recently emerged covalent adaptable network (CAN) polymers, Diels-Alder (DA) networks could depolymerize at high temperature through the reversible DA reactions, which bestows interesting behaviors of thermosetting polymers, such as malleability, surface welding behavior, and recyclability. Recently, there are increasing research interests in combining CANs with shape memory polymers (SMPs) to enable the next generation reprogrammable and recyclable actuation materials. However, our macromolecular-level understanding of DA networks that are intended for SMP applications is still limited. In this paper, we established a molecular dynamics method to investigate the surface welding and shape memory behaviors of DA networks. The mechanical properties of fresh and fully welded networks are examined by uniaxial tension measurements. The results indicate that with sufficient welding time, the welded networks can fully recover the mechanical properties as those of fresh network. The glass transition temperature of welded network with varying weight fractions of epoxy monomers are studied, and the simulation results agree well with experiment results. In addition, the shape fixity and recovery simulations reveal ideal shape memory property of the DA networks. Parametric studies revealed that with a decreased end-to-end distance of polymer chains, the DA networks exhibit higher flexibility, which significantly influences their mechanical and shape memory properties.

The continued development and continuation of i-CoAST as a multidisciplinary conference on coastal and marine issues would not have been possible without the dedicated support of the Journal of Coastal Research (JCR) and the Coastal Education & Research Foundation (CERF), and we would like to sincerely thank our friend and Editor-in-Chief of the JCR, Dr. Christopher Makowski, for always supporting and encouraging us. Abstract:AIM To adapt, cross-culturally, an established quality of life (QoL) scale for Hong Kong Chinese patients with diabetes; to measure their QoL and to identify the predictors of QoL in this population. BACKGROUND Healthcare providers are called on to assess and enhance the QoL of patients with diabetes. However, there is a lack of empirical QoL data pertaining to such individuals in China. METHODS The diabetes-specific QoL scale (DQoL) developed by Jacobson and the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial research group was cross-culturally adapted for use in a sample of 206 Hong Kong Chinese patients recruited from a diabetes specialist outpatient clinic. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. RESULTS The cross-cultural adaptation process produced a Hong Kong Chinese version of the DQoL scale with 37 items (HKC-DQoL-37) that demonstrated good internal consistency (alpha = 0.87) and acceptable test-retest validity (ICC 0.70, 95% CI 0.36-0.87). Discriminant validity was confirmed by comparing QoL scores between patients with and without insulin treatment. The QoL status of this sample (Mean = 2.2, SD = 0.5) is similar to that of Chinese immigrants and Caucasians in North America. Multiple regression analyses identified four predictors of poor QoL: (i) younger age, (ii) with diabetes complications, (iii) with admission due to hypoglycaemia, (iv) on insulin treatment. CONCLUSIONS Findings provide preliminary evidence on the validity and reliability of the HKC-DQoL-37. The four predictors of poor DQoL in Hong Kong Chinese patients are consistent with those identified in the West. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Understanding these predictors of poor QoL could help nurses and others to design and deliver appropriate interventions to these patients.

Abstract:Lithium (Li)-ion batteries have revolutionized our daily life towards wireless and clean style and the demand for batteries with higher energy density and better safety is highly required. The next-generation batteries with innovatory chemistry, material, and engineering breakthroughs are in strong pursuit currently. Herein, the key historical developments of practical electrode materials in Li-ion batteries are summarized as the cornerstone for the innovation of next-generation batteries. In addition, the emerging electrode materials for next-generation batteries are discussed revolving challenges and potential strategies. Finally, the future scenario of high-energy-density rechargeable batteries is presented. The combination of theory and experiment under multiscale are highlighted to promote the development of emerging electrode materials.
