In a flash, fifteen years have passed, and it has been ten years since the establishment of the Magnesium Alloy Journal. The dream has not only become a reality, but the impact on the Mg academic research and industry has exceeded our imagination.

Abstract:DOI: 10.1002/adma.201700805 This special issue presents an overview of the best research in materials chemistry at Zhejiang University. In 2017, Zhejiang University reaches a special milestone – 120 years of “Seeking Truth and Pursuing Innovation” (university motto). Qiushi Academy, the predecessor of Zhejiang University, was founded in 1897 and was one of the earliest modern academies (universities) of higher learning established in China. Now Zhejiang University is one of the top five comprehensive research universities in China. In recent years, its impact in the world has been further enhanced according to various scientific databases. The disciplines of materials science and chemistry are the “jewel of the crown” for Zhejiang University. According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) by Thomson Reuters Corporation, in 2016, research in chemistry and materials at Zhejiang University is ranked No. 17 in the world (No. 1 in China) and No. 27 in the world (No. 3 in China), respectively, based on the ESI 10-Year Accumulative Citation. In 2011, Prof. Xiaogang Peng and several other principle investigators from chemistry and other departments initiated The Center for Chemistry of HighPerformance & Novel Materials at Zhejiang University. The long-term goal is to “understand, discover, and apply advanced materials without bringing negative effects to the nature and the environment”, which may provide part of the solutions to sustainability of human society, the greatest challenge for the world, especially for high-population countries like China. The scientists in this center are diligently working as a cohesive force and with a main focus on optical, optoelectronic, catalytic, and biomedical materials at the current stage. With continuous support from Zhejiang University, this center has become a multidisciplinary platform in the field of materials chemistry. This special issue of Advanced Materials contains 12 reviews, 5 progress reports and 1 communication. The authors are from the Department of Chemistry, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, the College of Chemical and Biological Engineering, the College of Optical Science and Engineering, and the College of Feihe Huang was born in China in 1973. He received his Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech in March 2005 under the direction of Prof. Harry W. Gibson. Then he joined Prof. Peter J. Stang’s group at the University of Utah as a postdoctoral fellow. He became a Professor of Chemistry at Zhejiang University in December 2005. His current research interests are supramolecular polymers and pillararene supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract:While carbon in itself appears as simple an element as it could possibly get, the undeniable truth is that carbon materials represent a plethora of possibilities both from the perspective of their structure and their applications. While we may believe that carbon is “just another element”, one should never forget that its special ability to coordinate through different hybridizations with apparent ease grants the element properties that no other element may even match. Taking this one step further into the materials realm opens up numerous avenues in terms of materials dimensionality, surface and bulk functionalization, or degree of structural order just to mention a few examples. If these properties are translated into the properties and applications field, the results are just as impressive, with new applications and variants appearing with growingly larger frequency. This has resulted in over a million scientific papers published in the last decade in which the term “carbon” was used either in the title, abstract or keywords. When the search is narrowed down to the field “title” alone, the results drop to just over 318.000 scientific papers. These are figures that no other element in the periodic table can equal, which is a clear indicative that the story of carbon materials is still under constant evolution and development. This review will present an overview of the works published in the Frontiers in Carbon-based materials section during its 10 years of life that reflect the advancements achieved during the last decade in the field of carbon materials.

Chemistry at Play in Materials Science: the Centennial Celebration of Chemistry at Peking University

Abstract:In human history, technological revolutions have always been initiated by discoveries of novel materials, a continuous pattern from the Stone Age to modern times. Following this pattern, the avalanche of developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology in the past two decades was also triggered by the identification of novel materials such as sp2 carbons ranging from fullerenes to carbon nanotubes and graphene. It is well known that chemistry is the sole discipline that can give birth to new molecules and materials. It is this uniqueness of chemistry that allows it to serve as a cornerstone in fabricating novel materials, without which new properties could not possibly be explored. Presently, the CCME academically covers all subdisciplines in chemistry including physical, organic, inorganic, polymer, analytical, and theoretical chemistry as well as chemical biology and nuclear and radiochemistry. In 2003, the CCME was authorized under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and Technology to establish the “Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Sciences” in collaboration with the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences – one of the first six national laboratories in China. Currently, the CCME has about 200 faculty and staff members, 700 undergraduate students, 500 graduate students, and more than 70 postdoctoral fellows. It is fully appreciated that the CCME has made significant contributions to chemistry in China, continuously trialing modern concepts in education and pushing frontiers in research. The year 2010 marks the centennial anniversary of chemical education and research at PKU, which we have taken as the incentive to organize a commemorative special issue of Advanced Materials that focuses on materials science research at the CCME. When we initially contacted Advanced Materials in March 2009, we received great support and encouragement from Dr. Peter Gregory and Dr. Martin Ottmar, and our gratitude goes to the whole editorial team of the journal. Without their enthusiastic pushing forward and professional assistance, this Special Issue could not possibly have become a reality on time. Development and application of various controlled preparation methods and characterization techniques: aluminothermal nanomaterial synthesis, chemical vapor deposition, imprinting and lithography, plasma-assisted growth, template-guided fabrication, electrochemical deposition, biomimetic colloidal synthesis, solution synthesis, spin-coating and -casting, surface and interface engineering, electron and scanning probe microscopies, spectroscopic measurements, diffraction techniques, electric probing, light scattering, and magnetic measurements. Organic and hybrid materials: fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, organic materials for organic field effect transistors, metal phthalocyanines as photoreceptors for xerography, IrIII complexes for phosphorescent emission, metal–formate coordination compounds for molecular magnetism, and enzyme-mimetic complexes for biosensors and biocatalysis. Inorganic materials: rare-earth oxides and hydrides for catalysis, elemental materials and composite silicon compounds, bio-inspired calcite crystals, biocompatible materials, transition metal oxides for light emission, alkaline and earth alkaline metal compounds, metallic alloys, and many others. While nanoscience and nanotechnology require interdisciplinary effort, all reports in this Special Issue place emphasis on the creation of new materials or structures, demonstrating how heavily chemistry is involved and how efficiently it is employed. Controllability is crucial to the role of chemistry in materials, which is the origin of the theme of this PKU Special Issue. Without control of morphologies, structures, and compositions, the prepared materials cannot display fine-tuned properties, and devices derived from them are little more than pipe dreams. Needless to say, one such Special Issue cannot possibly cover all materials science research at the CCME, and some topics had to be omitted, such as polymers or biosafety and life-science-related activities based on the materials developed. We hope to nevertheless have given an indication of the breadth and depth of materials science research at the CCME–PKU. Last but not least, we are greatly indebted to all our colleagues at the CCME who have contributed to this Special Issue. We also thank the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the Ministry of Education for the financial support allowing us to celebrate this milestone in Chinese scientific history. Abstract:Since 2009, Scopus database is regularly covering the Arabian Journal of Chemistry (AJC). Ten years of continuous and successful journey motivated us to celebrate its contribution through the 1st comprehensive bibliometric study. For simplicity we will divide the abstract in four (4) parts. In part 1, the publications and citations details are provided. From 2009 to 2019, the total number of publications (TP) were found to be 2134, majorly comprising of research articles (n=2009/94.14%) and reviews (n=119/5.57%). The relative per year growth rate (%) from 2009, one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the doubling time was calculated. The details of impact per publication (IPP), SNIP, % self cit, citation per document, external cites per document, self-citations and total cites are also provided. In part 2, the lists of top ten (10) authors, institutions and countries are described with total number of publications (TP), h-index, total citations (TC), h-index without selfcitations (WSC) and total WSC. We also discussed and provided the list of top ten (10) most cited documents with TC, WSC and other Scopus metrics like Crossref citation indexes, Mendeley reader and field-weighted citation impact. In 3rd part, various other parameters were presented as visualization map, using VOSviewer. Precisely, the co-authorship, citations and co-citations patterns were described in detail. While, based on the co-words analysis of titles, abstract and authors keywords, we proposed the overall trend of publications in AJC. In part 4, we will specifically mention that in 2019, SCImago journal rank has declared AJC in Q1 (1<sup>st</sup> Quartile) state while Scopus has ranked it at 22nd (in 281 general chemical engineering journals) and 45th position (in 398 chemistry journals). From Web of Science (after 2009), we also retrieved the data about the journal AJC impact factor, 5 year impact factor, immediacy index and average journal impact factor percentile. The data confirms that AJC showed a continuous growth in the number of publications, citations, impact factor and ranking.

Abstract:At the time of our writing, it is November, 2021 and the second year in a row is coming to a close that has been overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. After 18 months of managing the journal editorial offices from our kitchens, spare bedrooms, and home offices, the Wiley offices in Germany (Weinheim and Berlin) have cautiously begun to open their doors, allowing employees to meet each other again face to face under controlled conditions. We remain cautiously optimistic to manage the pandemic conditions going forward but ready to adjust as necessary as circumstances change. We wish you and all of our authors and readers the best of health wherever you are in the world! In the past year, a new editorial structure was announced at the journal with a new Editor-in-Chief and 3 Deputy Editors. With these leaders now building up momentum in their roles, Advanced Materials Interfaces will continue to provide a forum for interface-related research across different disciplines with demonstrable potential for application. Amongst the many topics we have published, well-cited topics include 2D materials, opto-electronic devices, biomaterials, nature-inspired surfaces, membranes, surface reactions, and energy storage materials. We welcome manuscript submissions on both fundamental and application-driven interface research. Advanced Materials Interfaces further strengthened its position as an important journal in the area of interface-based research, with an increased Impact Factor of 6.147 (2021 Clarivate Journal Citation Reports). Table 1 shows a list of highly cited papers from 2018–2019 that contributed significantly to that success. In addition to the growth of the Impact factor, we received an increased number of total submissions from across the globe compared to previous years and published close to 700 papers in our 24 issues. Since its start in 2014, Advanced Materials Interfaces has published more than 3500 articles. We are proud of all the work that we have published this year, and some of these have particularly caught the attention of our readers. A selection of most downloaded articles in 2021 is shown in Table 2. In particular, the invited review articles that were published in the Hall of Fame series were well-received. In total, articles in Advanced Materials Interfaces are being downloaded around 70000 times per month. We are also grateful to our authors who have submitted many beautiful covers for the journal and Figure 1 shows a selection of our favorites of 2021. Beginning in 2022, we will increase the number of issues per month from two to three in order to accommodate the increased number of manuscript submissions and exciting works to be published. As a by-product, we look forward to highlighting even more of the highest quality works on the covers and raising the bar again in 2022! In 2021 we were delighted to publish three impressive Special Issues on topics that are central to the journal, as outlined in Table 3. With Guest Editors from the United Kingdom, Germany, India, and Japan, we are proud of both the quality and international reach of these issues and plan to continue this tradition going forward on topics of particular interest.
