Abstract:Prof. Lanjuan Li Editor-in-ChiefThe 20th century has witnessed a steep decline of the global burden of infectious diseases due to improved hygiene conditions in large parts of the world and the introduction of vaccines and antimicrobials. However, in today's global landscape infectious diseases still remain a major concern. According to the 2017 Global Burden of Disease Study, communicable diseases still accounted for approximately 8.14 million deaths, which was 14.6% of all age deaths for that year.1 Furthermore, it accounted for 24% of all age years of life lost. Infectious disease outbreaks have been rising since the 1980s2 and pathogenic microbes are now spreading faster geographically due to international traveling. Simultaneously, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases are being identified faster than ever before. The resurgence of these emerging and re-emerging diseases might be caused by climate change, changing international food chains, and a rise in antimicrobial resistance. According to a recent report on antimicrobial resistance issued by the UK government,3 unless proper action is taken, drug-resistant diseases might cause 10 million deaths per year by 2050, costing the global economy up to 100 trillion dollar. This is a daunting future scenario that we should be able to avert with joined global efforts and extensive surveillance, reporting and intensified fundamental and applied research on infectious microbes and diseases. Over the past decades, China has transformed itself into an international powerhouse with an economic aggregate that has become the second-largest in the world. As a result, China's science and technology have entered a stage of great outbreak, and the growth rate of its scientific research has attracted worldwide attention. However, according to Web of Science, the number of English journals in China is only just over 300. Despite its rapid growth, the number of English journals still lags behind the overall scientific research output of China. Therefore, there is a serious imbalance between the scientific research level and the number of international journals in China. One of the fields that have shown rapid growth in China is in the field of infectious microbes and diseases. China has gradually moved to the forefront in our global efforts to combat infectious diseases. Of the 32 new infectious diseases discovered in the world over the past 20 years, about half have emerged in China. Furthermore, China has been at the center of efforts to contain pandemics of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in 2003,4 H1N1 influenza in 20095 and H7N9 influenza in 2013.6 Many of the Chinese scientists responsible for pushing the field teamed-up to jointly establish the Collaborative Innovation Centre for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases (CCID) in 2012. The CCID was housed at the State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases in China and has attracted a large number of domestic and foreign outstanding talents. Since its establishment, authors affiliated with CCID have published over 2500 high-quality international research papers, which are estimated to be approximately 1/25th of all high-level publications in the field of infectious diseases containing Chinese authors. Now, CCID decided to launch a new journal in the field of infectious microbes and diseases to help Chinese international publishing grow up to its potential. The new journal “Infectious Microbes & Diseases” will take the open-access model, and will be co-published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and Zhejiang University Press on behalf of the CCID and the State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases in China. CCID hopes to run a world-class academic journal that promotes the timely and widespread dissemination of research on infectious microbes and diseases, improves the level of diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control of infectious microbes and diseases, and safeguard human health. The research field of infectious microbes and diseases deserves an excellent platform based in China to publish and rapidly disseminate excellent research, and which is committed to solving the public health and safety problems caused by infectious microbes and diseases globally.

Abstract:Despite their impact, many zoonotic diseases are neglected. This Research Topic aims to explore the pathogenesis, molecular evolution, transmission dynamics, and host interaction mechanisms of zoonotic pathogens, providing a platform for innovative research focused on preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases. Within this topic, 17 research articles and 5 reviews have been published that complemented our knowledge of zoonotic diseases.Huang et al. investigated tick-borne viruses, particularly the Jingmen tick virus (JMTV), discovering a novel strain, the Sichuan tick virus, with implications for cross-species transmission and co-infection in multiple tick hosts. Through high-throughput sequencing, they identified whole virus genomes from four tick samples, revealing a novel JMTV-like virus with signals of reassortment with other JMTV strains, suggesting a complex interplay of viral evolution in ticks.

Abstract:The epidemiology and transmission dynamics of infectious diseases must be understood at the individual and community levels to improve public health decision-making for real-time and integrated community-based control strategies. Herein, we explore the epidemiological characteristics for assessing the impact of public health interventions in the community setting and their applications. Computational statistical methods could advance research on infectious disease epidemiology and accumulate scientific evidence of the potential impacts of pharmaceutical/nonpharmaceutical measures to mitigate or control infectious diseases in the community. Novel public health threats from emerging zoonotic infectious diseases are urgent issues. Given these direct and indirect mitigating impacts at various levels to different infectious diseases and their burdens, we must consider an integrated assessment approach, 'One Health', to understand the dynamics and control of infectious diseases.

Abstract:Although the title of the Special Issue is ‘Airborne Microbiome’ the manuscripts received have highlighted a variety of peripheral, yet related aspects of this. The contributions are a mixture of primary research, reviews and commentaries, including: new methods to explore environmental niches where such microbes may grow, their detection and characterisation in the human host, which pathogens are present in the respiratory tract and can be exhaled in human breath to potentially spread via the airborne route, and some strategies for their control. Finally, a historical-to-current overview explores human-microbial interactions, including problems with sampling and detection methods, drug resistance, the role of super-spreaders and issues around research funding.

Abstract:The title of the Virtual Special Issue (VSI) "SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogenic microorganisms in the environment", clearly indicates a main focus not only on the virus causing the current pandemic, but also on other pathogenic microorganisms and their spatial and temporal dynamics in environmental compartments. Overall, the VSI has received more than 100 submissions relating to most of the possible fields connected to the pandemic, many of them of high scientific value. A rigorous peer-reviewing process has been carried out, with a panel of experts making a great work to evaluate that important number of submissions. As a result, those manuscripts reaching the highest scientific standards were selected for publication. We think that the papers included constitute a set of high-quality contributions, which should help to improve the overall scientific perspective regarding this crucial issue. In this piece, the Editors comment some issues on the papers accepted for publication, and include additional reflections.

Abstract:The transmission of infectious diseases is a dynamic process determined by multiple factors originating from disease pathogens and/or parasites, vector species, and human populations. These factors interact with each other and demonstrate the intrinsic mechanisms of the disease transmission temporally, spatially, and socially. In this article, we provide a comprehensive perspective, named as systems thinking, for investigating disease dynamics and associated impact factors, by means of emphasizing the entirety of a system's components and the complexity of their interrelated behaviors. We further develop the general steps for performing systems approach to tackling infectious diseases in the real-world settings, so as to expand our abilities to understand, predict, and mitigate infectious diseases.

Abstract:Although the focus in the area of health research may be shifting from infectious to non-communicable diseases, the infectious diseases of poverty remain a major burden of disease of global health concern. A global platform to communicate and share the research on these diseases is needed to facilitate the translation of knowledge into effective approaches and tools for their elimination. Based on the "One health, One world" mission, a new, open-access journal, Infectious Diseases of Poverty (IDP), was launched by BioMed Central in partnership with the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases (NIPD), Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) on October 25, 2012. Its aim is to identify and assess research and information gaps that hinder progress towards new interventions for a particular public health problem in the developing world. From the inaugural IDP issue of October 25, 2012, a total of 256 manuscripts have been published over the following five years. Apart from a small number of editorials, opinions, commentaries and letters to the editor, the predominant types of publications are research articles (69.5%) and scoping reviews (21.5%). A total of 1 081 contributing authors divided between 323 affiliations across 68 countries, territories and regions produced these 256 publications. The journal is indexed in major international biomedical databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Embase. In 2015, it was assigned its first impact factor (4.11), which is now 2.13. During the past five years, IDP has received manuscripts from 90 countries, territories and regions across six continents with an annual acceptance rate of all contributions maintained at less than 40%. Content analysis shows that neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), followed by the "Big Three" (HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis) and infectious diseases in general comprise 88% of all publications. In addition, a series of 10 thematic issues, covering 118 publications in all, was published as separate parts of the first five volumes. These publications were cited 975 times, which equals an average of 8.3 times per publication. The current challenge is to identify cutting-edge research topics and attract and to publish first-rate publications leading to increasing importance and impact of the journal in its field.

Abstract:Infectious diseases are a threat for human health with tremendous impact on our society at large. The recent COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2, is the latest example of a highly infectious disease ravaging the world, since late 2019. It is therefore imperative to develop efficient mathematical models, able to substantially curb the damages of a pandemic by unveiling disease spreading dynamics and symmetries. This will help inform (non)-pharmaceutical prevention strategies. For the reasons above we wrote this report that goes at the heart of mathematical modelling of infectious disease diffusion by simultaneously investigating the underlying microscopic dynamics in terms of percolation models, effective description via compartmental models and the employment of temporal symmetries naturally encoded in the mathematical language of critical phenomena. Our report reviews these approaches and determines their common denominators, relevant for theoretical epidemiology and its link to important concepts in theoretical physics. We show that the different frameworks exhibit common features such as criticality and self-similarity under time rescaling. These features are naturally encoded within the unifying field theoretical approach. The latter leads to an efficient description of the time evolution of the disease via a framework in which (near) time-dilation invariance is explicitly realised. As important test of the relevance of symmetries we show how to mathematically account for observed phenomena such as multi-wave dynamics. The models presented here are of immediate relevance for different realms of scientific enquiry from medical applications to the understanding of human behaviour. Our review offers novel perspectives on how to model, capture, organise and understand epidemiological data and disease dynamics for modelling real-world phenomena.

Abstract:Natural, geographical barriers have historically limited the spread of communicable diseases. This is no longer the case in today's interconnected world, paired with its unprecedented environmental and climate change, emphasising the intersection of evolutionary biology, epidemiology and geography ( i.e. biogeography). A total of 14 articles of the special issue entitled "Geography and health: role of human translocation and access to care" document enhanced disease transmission of diseases, such as malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, COVID-19 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome corona 2) and Oropouche fever in spite of spatiotemporal surveillance. High-resolution satellite images can be used to understand spatial distributions of transmission risks and disease spread and to highlight the major avenue increasing the incidence and geographic range of zoonoses represented by spill-over transmission of coronaviruses from bats to pigs or civets. Climate change and globalization have increased the spread and establishment of invasive mosquitoes in non-tropical areas leading to emerging outbreaks of infections warranting improved physical, chemical and biological vector control strategies. The translocation of pathogens and their vectors is closely connected with human mobility, migration and the global transport of goods. Other contributing factors are deforestation with urbanization encroaching into wildlife zones. The destruction of natural ecosystems, coupled with low income and socioeconomic status, increase transmission probability of neglected tropical and zoonotic diseases. The articles in this special issue document emerging or re-emerging diseases and surveillance of fever symptoms. Health equity is intricately connected to accessibility to health care and the targeting of healthcare resources, necessitating a spatial approach. Public health comprises successful disease management integrating spatial surveillance systems, including access to sanitation facilities. Antimicrobial resistance caused, e.g. by increased use of antibiotics in health, agriculture and aquaculture, or acquisition of resistance genes, can be spread by horizontal gene transfer. This editorial reviews the key findings of this 14-article special issue, identifies important gaps relevant to our interconnected world and makes a number of specific recommendations to mitigate the transmission risks of infectious diseases in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era.

Abstract:Since the twenty first century, the outbreaks of global infectious diseases have caused several public health emergencies of international concern, imposing an enormous impact on population health, the economy, and social development. The COVID-19 pandemic has once again exposed deficiencies in existing global health systems, emergency management, and disease surveillance, and highlighted the importance of developing effective evaluation tools. This article outlines current challenges emerging from infectious disease control from the perspective of global health, elucidated through influenza, malaria, tuberculosis, and neglected tropical diseases. The discordance among government actors and absent data sharing platforms or tools has led to unfulfilled targets in health system resilience and a capacity gap in infectious disease response. The current situation calls for urgent action to tackle these threats of global infectious diseases with joined forces through more in-depth international cooperation and breaking governance barriers from the purview of global health. Overall, a systematic redesign should be considered to enhance the resilience of health systems, which warrants a great need to sustain capacity-building efforts in emergency preparedness and response and raises an emerging concern of data integration in the concept of One Health that aims to address shared health threats at the human-animal-environment interface.

Abstract:In recent years,the incidence of various classical infectious diseases has been declining obviously.However,newly emerging infective diseases such as AIDS,SARS,human bird flu,and human streptococcicosis suis have become new problems in public health.Drug-resistant infections,opportunistic infections,and hospital infections are on an increase tendency;therefore,epidemiology dealing with classical infectious diseases can no longer meet the needs of the new situation,and transformation to the science of infectious diseases from epidemiology is an inevitable trend of disciplinary reform.The formation and development of the science of infectious diseases do not change the general structure of current medical science,but develop and improve the science of epidemiology,and maintain the disciplinary integrity and scientificness.It is beneficial to health care,research and teaching management of infectious diseases.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Infectious Diseases

Abstract:The science of networks has revolutionised research into the dynamics of interacting elements. It could be argued that epidemiology in particular has embraced the potential of network theory more than any other discipline. Here we review the growing body of research concerning the spread of infectious diseases on networks, focusing on the interplay between network theory and epidemiology. The review is split into four main sections, which examine: the types of network relevant to epidemiology; the multitude of ways these networks can be characterised; the statistical methods that can be applied to infer the epidemiological parameters on a realised network; and finally simulation and analytical methods to determine epidemic dynamics on a given network. Given the breadth of areas covered and the ever-expanding number of publications, a comprehensive review of all work is impossible. Instead, we provide a personalised overview into the areas of network epidemiology that have seen the greatest progress in recent years or have the greatest potential to provide novel insights. As such, considerable importance is placed on analytical approaches and statistical methods which are both rapidly expanding fields. Throughout this review we restrict our attention to epidemiological issues.
