Abstract:Purpose Financial technologies, also known as “FinTech,” have brought disruptive changes to virtually every aspect of financial services and are becoming increasingly important in the world economic system. The purpose of this paper is to proffer a bird view of some recent studies in the key research areas of FinTech, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, crowdfunding and then to summarize the key contributions made by all the six papers in this special issue. Design/methodology/approach A literature review approach is adopted, and the summary shows that most types of FinTech innovations generate positive value to innovators, financial customers and the society. The current implications and future directions are explored based on theoretical and empirical analyses. Findings The benefits from and determinants of FinTech applications vary across different financial sectors. Together the summary of this special issue suggests that there is substantial value creation in further exploring the dynamics, mechanisms and social consequences of FinTech. Originality/value This study helps to extend knowledge by summarizing the current practices, proffering new insights and watching out emerging trends of financial technologies, and to shed light on a variety of subjects of interest to practitioners, academics and policy makers by suggesting for the future research topics.

Abstract:In recent years, more and more financial management problems, such as portfolio selection, asset pricing, risk management, and asset-liability management problems, have been presented in the literature adopting formulation and solution approaches rooted in mathematical theory, as well as optimization methods. Abstract:Over the past decade, blockchains and cryptocurrencies have taken a central stage in financial technology (FinTech) innovation. In 2020–2021, as the academic finance and management community began actively investigating this domain, we issued a call for papers for a special issue to encourage interdisciplinary research in this emerging area. This section of Management Science presents the first systematic collection of knowledge, both theoretical and empirical, focusing on blockchain economics, crypto assets, decentralized finance, and Web3 ecosystems. We describe the editorial protocol employed for this special issue (now included in this volume as a special section), summarize what we learn about the field, and introduce the 15 articles included in the special section. We also offer several observations to highlight foundational issues in the new field and to guide future research in this exciting new area at the intersection of technology and finance.

Abstract:Technologies have spawned finance innovations since the early days of computer applications in businesses, most recently reaching the stage of disruptive innovations, such as mobile payments, cryptocurrencies, and digitization of business assets. This has led to the emerging field called financial technology or simply FinTech. In this editorial review, we first provide an overview on relevant technological, pedagogical, and managerial issues pertaining to FinTech teaching and research, with a focus on market trading, artificial intelligence, and blockchain in finance. And then we introduce the articles appearing in this special section. We hope that our discussions of potential research directions and topics in FinTech will stimulate future research in the fields of information systems and finance toward making their unique marks in the FinTech evolution and the associated business and societal innovations.

Abstract:In this special section of Algorithmica, we have included several articles based on presentations made, during December 12–14, 2007, at the third Workshop on Internet and Network Economics (WINE 2007) in San Diego, California. The workshop provided a forum for researchers as well as practitioners to exchange innovative ideas and to learn about each other’s efforts and results. It reflects an emerging trend in merging theories, methodologies, and applications in computer science, economics, mathematics, management sciences to manage increasing problems motivated by Internet activities. The special section chose to focus on the market problems that have attracted growing attention in recent years. Four articles covering two recent active topics have been included, covering the prediction market and the sponsored search market. All selected articles have been significantly improved from the workshop presentations, taking into consideration helpful feedback from the conference presentations and reviewers’ reports. Chen, et al., made a thorough study of user strategic behavior on the prediction market with market scoring rule market makers. While truthful behavior under myopic traders was known, they studied in this work the non-myopic strategies of traders and developed information structures that lead to truthful behavior, for both the finite time horizon model and the infinite time horizon model.

Abstract:The continuously expanding urban environment introduces a significant amount of both physical and digital infrastructure. The accompanying solution that collects environmental big data through the Internet of Things (IoT) holds great promise, opening up new opportunities as well as challenges. On one hand, billions of sensors and devices continuously collect, process, and transmit data. The data volume poses the challenge for supporting the decision-making in an automatic and intelligent way. On the other hand, the dynamism of data, the complexity of the environment, and the diversity of tasks also set the barrier to the intelligent processing paradigm of smart infrastructure. Fortunately, recent advancements in AI technologies offer cost-effective solutions that are capable of substantially improving modern metropolitan smart infrastructure. This special issue focuses smart sensors, smart communications, smart analytics, and applications for smart infrastructure, introducing the relevant background and discussing potential beneficial technical routes.
