Abstract:<span>Special Issue B continues to address a set of research questions to complement Special Issue A which focused on China's rapid economic growth and the associated challenges. Examples discussed include unbalanced domestic growth, Africa-China migration, a game theoretic perspective on cooperation, and industry structure and policy changes. Critically, Issue B identifies opportunities as well as uncertainties for Chinese enterprises and institutions in their quest to become the world's leading economy. Specifically, papers examine issues related to the China Multinational Corporations (CMNC), workforce mobility, technological innovation, and the economic development of cultural industry, specifically, the film industry, all of which are having a profound impact on China's economic landscape. Their research focus includes: CMNC sociocultural distance and its impact on cross-border replication of activities; socio-political decisions in relation to innovation efficiency; the 'middle-income trap' and its effect on workforce mobility and 'functional inequality'. The frameworks, models, and theories discussed in these papers should help scholars to gain a better understanding of some of the social determinants of economic decisions as they relate to China's economic development.</span>

Abstract:In this Introduction to the Special IIssue on Global trading system with the New American Administration: China, United States and Europe, three excellent papers are presented. The first paper highlights the central and eastern European countries' views on their relationships with China in the era of the pandemic. The second paper by Gao and Shaffer (forthcoming) presents a detailed legal discussion on the global value chains, including new development in intellectual property rights laws in China. The third paper by Wen (forthcoming) proposes that China should continue to participate in the global trading system and further reduce unnecessary government interventions in trade, investment and innovation. Finally, the Introduction highlights various important papers published by this Journal that are relevant to the theme. For example, Fung, Aminian, Fu and Tung (2018) and Fung, Amininian, Fu, Rhee and Tung (2020) are the first to introduce a formal, analytical digital firm model in the discussions of U.S.-China relations. Other outstanding papers include Lau (2019a), Cheng, hitten and Hua (2019), Garcia Herrero (2019) and Lin and Wang (forthcoming), all published in this Journal.

Abstract:This article serves as an introduction to the five articles submitted for the special issue on IPE in China. In addition to summarizing the special issue articles on key themes in IPE, we outline the genesis of IPE as a field of study inside China, detail the core characteristics of Chinese IPE, as seen in this special issue, and consider the limits of the development of Chinese IPE to date. Finally, we provide a road map for the development of the IPE field in China, and identify the potential contributions which the Chinese scholarship could make to knowledge creation in IPE, and to the global conversation, in the future.

This provides new challenges to which students of contemporary diplomacy in China and in the rest of the world must respond with study and research. We are pleased to present this special issue of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy on China’s Global Diplomacy as part of such an effort. This collection of research articles and forum pieces was long in the making. The editors owe a great debt of thanks to all of the contributors for the extraordinary patience they have shown as the collection slowly came together. Abstract:In this special issue editorial, we firstly discuss the sharp contrast between the rich English literature on Chinese students overseas, and the limited studies published in international journals on international students in China. We then introduce the rapid expansion of international student enrolment in China in recent ten years, pointing to the significance and urgency to deepen our understandings of these students' experiences. The editorial ends with an introduction to the contents of the articles included in the special issue. We hope that this issue on international students in China will motivate Chinese-speaking researchers in and outside China to contribute to this important research area.
