Abstract:China accounted for 14.4% of the global exports of goods, ranking first in 2022, followed by the United States at 8.3%. As the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development commented, China has become a global trade titan, and its meteoric rise as perhaps one of the best stories of economic development has been both admired and questioned. This article discusses the reasons behind China becoming a global trade titan from the perspective of transport logistics by applying statistical analysis and case studies. The results show that the meteoric rise of China's trade is inseparable from China's development in transport logistics, especially investments in maritime transport construction and China Railway Express, which hugely promote the interconnectivity of transport infrastructure and reduce transportation duration and waiting time, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the imbalance of types of imports and exports in trade and the differences in infrastructure standards pose some problems. The research manages to give policy implications based on the existing problems of the current trade logistics system through case studies on Sino-US, Sino-EU and Sino-ASEAN trade relations and transport facilitation issues.

Abstract:One of the most important international economic events in 2018 was the China-U.S. "trade war." With China's growing role in the worldwide economy and geopolitical impacts, the United States has labeled China as a strategy competitor. This notes briefly introduce the six articles covered in the volume. We highlight the causes and possible economic consequences from the perspectives of the United States, China, Japan, the Europe, and even East Asian countries like Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.

Abstract:In this Introduction to the Special IIssue on Global trading system with the New American Administration: China, United States and Europe, three excellent papers are presented. The first paper highlights the central and eastern European countries' views on their relationships with China in the era of the pandemic. The second paper by Gao and Shaffer (forthcoming) presents a detailed legal discussion on the global value chains, including new development in intellectual property rights laws in China. The third paper by Wen (forthcoming) proposes that China should continue to participate in the global trading system and further reduce unnecessary government interventions in trade, investment and innovation. Finally, the Introduction highlights various important papers published by this Journal that are relevant to the theme. For example, Fung, Aminian, Fu and Tung (2018) and Fung, Amininian, Fu, Rhee and Tung (2020) are the first to introduce a formal, analytical digital firm model in the discussions of U.S.-China relations. Other outstanding papers include Lau (2019a), Cheng, hitten and Hua (2019), Garcia Herrero (2019) and Lin and Wang (forthcoming), all published in this Journal.

Abstract:The astonishing surge in China's international trade is the result of comprehensive economic reforms in the 1980s and 1990s. Trade was further bolstered by China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001. We examine several aspects of China's international trade that might help to explain its surprisingly fast growth and its ever‐growing role in the global economy. A large number of studies have analyzed how trade liberalization, the WTO accession in particular, has profoundly changed the Chinese economy. We survey notable contributions to this literature that analyze the effects of trade liberalization on Chinese firms, individuals and households. Meanwhile, China's exports have had various effects on importing countries and the enormous growth of China's exports is seen by some observers as posing a threat to China's trading partners. Therefore, we discuss the emerging literature on the effects of China's spectacular export growth on consumers, labor markets, innovation, media and politics in foreign countries. Given the new domestic and external circumstances, the Chinese Government is determined to push for the formation of a new trade structure characterized by broad opening up to transform China into a strong trading powerhouse.

Abstract:The rise of China is no longer just a possibility to be imagined. It is an established fact. So too are the increasing impact that a more powerful and confident China is having on the rest of the world, and the increasing impact that the rest of the world is having on China. Both are unprecedented. China’s interaction with the rest of the world provides a window on how a rising China practices diplomacy. This provides new challenges to which students of contemporary diplomacy in China and in the rest of the world must respond with study and research. We are pleased to present this special issue of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy on China’s Global Diplomacy as part of such an effort. This collection of research articles and forum pieces was long in the making. The editors owe a great debt of thanks to all of the contributors for the extraordinary patience they have shown as the collection slowly came together. Abstract:China's trade relations with the United States over the past four decades is a topic that has not been fully dealt with in scholarly works. This paper charts the course of US-China economic relations since 1971, explains the principal forces stimulating growth and encouraging change and, finally, discusses how these two economic giants fit into an interlocking Asian and world economy. In reaction to the post-2008 financial downturn, advocates for a new world economic order have suggested a rebalancing of global demand, which will arguably become a major, politically charged issue in the US and in China in the years to come. Growing economic interdependence has quickly presented new challenges and opportunities, with issues such as human rights, Most-Favoured-Nation status, the Taiwan and Tibet question, and the huge American trade deficit threatening to cloud the relationship at times. With China's emergence as a major power and America's hegemonic ambitions tested in successive wars, the contradiction between a booming commercial relationship and conflict associated with geopolitical and ideological differences will continue to constitute a serious challenge. The long-term goal for each side will be to forge economic ties strong enough to create a stable political relationship, rather than to be held hostage by geopolitical constraints.

Abstract:<p>In June 2018, the WTO issued a comprehensive report on China's trade policy from 2016 to 2018. Like the previous six reports (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016), the 2018 analysis provided a general overview of China's macroeconomic environment and trade policy. The TPR was detailed and informative with comments that were generally objective and neutral (Yao and Liu, 2012). Using the WTO's publication as a reference point, our paper attempts to provide even further insight into the evolution of Chinese trade policy over a longer time frame, with a particular focus from 2013 to the present.</p>
Processing trade, trade liberalisation, and opening up: China's miracle of international trade

Abstract:China began to adopt the comparative-advantage-following (CAF) development strategy based on its factor endowments and reform its economy in 1978. Since then, and economy has continued to grow rapidly. Over the past four decades, China’s gross domestic product has increased 34-fold and its foreign trade volume has increased 204-fold. Over these periods, the Chinese government issued various opening-up policies to integrate the Chinese economy into the global international trading system. The aim of this chapter is to summarise those different opening-up policies among different periods to help people better understand the reason behind the miracle of China’s economic growth and the role that international trade has played in this process.

Abstract:The processing trade, which has become hugely popular in China, involves domestic firms obtaining raw materials or intermediate inputs from abroad, processing them locally and exporting the value-added goods. Governments usually offer tariff reduction or tariff exemption to encourage the development of processing trade. The current chapter aims to provide a comprehensive review of various trends, characteristics and productivity levels of processing trade as opposed to ordinary trade in China.

Abstract:Economic globalization and trade liberalization have been developing smoothly and are expected to continue in the future. The Doha Round of trade negotiation and the recent phasing out of the Multi Fiber Agreement (MFA) have stimulated the process of trade liberalization. The overall goal of this study is to examine the impacts on China and world economy of the recent phasing out of MFA and the proposals for trade liberalization provided by EU, USA and CAIRNS group. Based on a general equilibrium model of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP), this study shows that the world economy will gain more than US$ 10 billion from the phasing out of MFA, though the loss may present in a few countries. USA, EU, China and India are major gainers. The success of Doha Round negotiation will have much substantial effect on the global economy. World income will increase by about US$ 100 billion in 2010. China is one of major countries that gain most from the Doha Round of trade negotiation. Among the proposals examined, China gains more from CAIRNS and US proposals than from EU proposal. China should press for global trade liberalization as this is consistent with China' s national interests.

A Trade Tale of Two Countries: China and India

Abstract:The paper first analyzes the pattern of trade for China and India in the new century. We find that: (1) Both countries have high openness ratios that positively associated with their growing labor productivity over years. (2) China’s world export share keeps increasing whereas India maintains a stable but relatively small world exporting share in the new century. (3) Both countries exhibit a large extent to intra-industry trade though both export a large proportion of heavy-industry manufacturing products. (4) China exports more complicated and sophisticated products than India, though the gap is narrowing down over years. (4) India exports a significant share of high-technology products, though such a proportion is much smaller than that of China, when taking processing trade into account. (5) Processing trade plays a dominant role for China’s exports whereas it is relatively unimportant for India. We then seek for different policy settings in the two countries to interpret such similarity and differences. We conclude that the key reason for different trade performance in the two countries is the late adoption of the outward-promotion policy of India compared to that of China. To illustrate this point, we provide a careful scrutiny by the setup of special economic zones, by the access of the GATT/WTO, by the evolution of tariff reductions, and even by trade facilitation in the two countries.

Abstract:1. Background It was said to be a win-win game when the Minister of the China Foreign Trade Ministry and the Trade Representative of the United States toasted each other on the Sino -American bilateral agreement on China's entry into the WTO on November 15, 1999. Half a year later, a similar agreement was reached between the European Union and China. Climbing the two largest mountains to get to the WTO, China is approaching the endpoint of the marathon. China needs the world, and the world can not advance without the participation of China. Facing the challenges brought about by the new technologies and global mobility of capital, no country can develop further rapidly and healthily without adapting to this globalization of economy. This is also true for China, the largest developing country in the world. It is in great need of taking in the advanced technologies, large volume of capital, and policy experiences to facilitate its economic reformation, even political reformation.
Trade Expansion of China and India: Threat or Opportunity

Abstract:By exploring the export performances and specialisation patterns of China and India, we assess their trade competitiveness and complementarity vis‐à‐vis each other as well as with the rest of the world. Our analysis indicates that (a) India faces tough competition from China in the third markets especially in clothing, textiles and leather products; (b) there is a moderate potential for expanding trade between the two countries; (c) China poses a challenge for the East Asian economies, the US, and most European countries especially in medium‐technology industries; (d) India appears to be a competitor mainly for its neighbouring South Asian countries; (e) complementarity exists between the imports of China and India, and the exports of the US, some European states and East Asian countries, especially Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, implying opportunities for trade expansion; and finally (f) the export structure of China is changing with the exports of skill‐intensive and high‐technology products increasing and those of labour‐intensive products decreasing gradually. This suggests that challenges created by China in traditional labour‐intensive products might reduce in the long run.
China's Free Trade Agreement Strategies

Abstract:The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a multilateral free trade agreement (FTA) which aims to liberalize the economies of the Asia—Pacific region. The rapid movement of the TPP agenda, however, has caused China some disquiet. Originally, the agreement was signed among four countries (Brunei, Chile, New Zealand and Singapore) on June 3, 2005, and entered into force on May 28, 2006. In 2008, five additional countries (Australia, Malaysia, Peru, the United States, and Vietnam) began negotiations to join the group. On November 12, 2011, the leaders of these nine TPP partner countries announced the broad outlines of an expanded TPP: it will promote innovation, enhance economic growth and development, and support the creation and retention of jobs among the nine dynamic Asia—Pacific economies. Further negotiations are still underway, with Japan, Canada, and Mexico also having demonstrated a strong interest in joining. China actively promotes the regional economic integration of East Asia, which depends heavily on external neighboring economies. The TPP agenda is considered by many Chinese policymakers and scholars as a force that could rip apart the regional economic integration of East Asia. Moreover, a strong voice in Chinese academic and policy circles maintains that the main reason behind the Obama administration’s support for the TPP agenda is a desire to use it as a tool to economically contain China’s rise.

Abstract:The digitalization of economy has a significant impact on the economic sector and on other activities. In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the digitalization of the economy in China, primarily in such an area as digital trade. China's digital trade has grown steadily in recent years, and its share in China's trade has also increased. This article proposes the term “digital trade” and presents its characteristics. Analyze the state of the China’s digital trade, the features and main trends in the development of digital trade in goods and services. In addition, put forward current problems in the development of digital trade in China. It is concluded that digital trade in China as a whole has a positive trend, but in the future, instead of digital trade in goods, digital trade in services will become a major driving force of China's digital trade. With the development of cloud computing, cloud outsourcing and offshore services will become a new sector of digital services trade in the coming years. It was noted that China's digital trade is a driver for innovative trade growth and has an active impact on China's trade and economic activity.
