Abstract:Purpose Financial technologies, also known as “FinTech,” have brought disruptive changes to virtually every aspect of financial services and are becoming increasingly important in the world economic system. The purpose of this paper is to proffer a bird view of some recent studies in the key research areas of FinTech, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, crowdfunding and then to summarize the key contributions made by all the six papers in this special issue. Design/methodology/approach A literature review approach is adopted, and the summary shows that most types of FinTech innovations generate positive value to innovators, financial customers and the society. The current implications and future directions are explored based on theoretical and empirical analyses. Findings The benefits from and determinants of FinTech applications vary across different financial sectors. Together the summary of this special issue suggests that there is substantial value creation in further exploring the dynamics, mechanisms and social consequences of FinTech. Originality/value This study helps to extend knowledge by summarizing the current practices, proffering new insights and watching out emerging trends of financial technologies, and to shed light on a variety of subjects of interest to practitioners, academics and policy makers by suggesting for the future research topics.

Abstract:Technologies have spawned finance innovations since the early days of computer applications in businesses, most recently reaching the stage of disruptive innovations, such as mobile payments, cryptocurrencies, and digitization of business assets. This has led to the emerging field called financial technology or simply FinTech. In this editorial review, we first provide an overview on relevant technological, pedagogical, and managerial issues pertaining to FinTech teaching and research, with a focus on market trading, artificial intelligence, and blockchain in finance. And then we introduce the articles appearing in this special section. We hope that our discussions of potential research directions and topics in FinTech will stimulate future research in the fields of information systems and finance toward making their unique marks in the FinTech evolution and the associated business and societal innovations.

Abstract:The growth of fintechs has exponentially modified the international financial system. These changes affect social mechanisms that regulate the performance of economic agents, generating the need to modify the current role played by institutions. Despite the clear relationship that exists between fintechs and institutions, studies exploring the details of this relationship are still scarce. The objective of this article is to propose a review and analysis of the current state of research on fintechs and institutions. To achieve this goal, a systematic literature review was conducted, with the selection and analysis of 123 documents published which were based on preestablished inclusion and exclusion criteria. The main results show the development of a framework that allows us to increase our understanding of fintechs and institutions; the identification of three propositions that serve as a guide to the institutional landscape in which fintechs operate; and finally the recognition of a research agenda.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to delineate a research agenda to guide future service research investigating the digital transformation of financial service systems through Fintech – disruptive innovations by new market entrants that challenge the position of mainstream financial institutions. Design/methodology/approach – Rooted in the philosophical foundations of “use-inspired research,” this paper addresses the managerially and societally relevant phenomenon of Fintech by identifying, and responding to, the individual challenges and problems associated with the digital transformation of financial services. This is accomplished through a computational text-mining approach to analyze the corpus of 1,545 published practitioner articles associated with Fintech, identification of managerial challenges therein and subsequent delineation of a novel research agenda.Findings – By connecting managerial challenges relating to Fintech with the service literature, this paper develops a use-inspired research agenda that provides scholarly and managerially relevant research directions (RDs). These pertain to the complexity of digital financial service systems (micro level), orchestration of value co-creation with Fintech (meso level), and the development of elastic infrastructures, models and markets (macro level). Research limitations/implications – Fintech is an emerging phenomenon associated with the digital transformation of financial services. However, actual guidelines on how service research related to Fintech could be advanced from a theoretically as well as managerially relevant angle are unavailable to date. Here, the authors address this challenge and provide the field with 18 tangible RDs to advance service theory and practice. Practical implications – The purpose of this paper is to guide future academic research addressing managerial challenges associated with Fintech and the digital transformation of financial service. Due to the explicit use-inspired nature of the work, the future research stemming from the agenda that the authors put forward here will be of benefit to decision makers and society more broadly.Originality/value – This empirical research contributes to the discourse regarding the role of information and communication technologies in service in general, and the digital transformation on financial services in particular. The in-depth computational text-mining analysis is unbiased, replicable and provides the foundation for a use-inspired research agenda that is subsequently delineated.

Abstract:Background: Innovative financial technologies (fintech) are gradually changing how financial transactions and processes are conducted. The adoption of fintech not only benefits the financial sector but can also have a broader impact on society. Due to their ability to provide customized services to a wide range of stakeholders, fintech is gaining traction and experiencing significant growth. Compared to traditional financial institutions, fintech companies can reach a wider audience and operate more efficiently. In addition to upending traditional financial services, fintech can also provide financial services to marginalized groups. We argue that fintech research and practice should focus on seizing opportunities and addressing challenges related to financial inclusion, especially in emerging markets. Method: We conducted a systematic literature review of 178 articles to understand the relationship between fintech and financial inclusion. Results: Our analysis highlights six fintech research themes: fintech and financial inclusion, fintech adoption and use, fintech and sectoral growth, fintech and lending, and technology shaping the fintech. We also present four future themes (basic, driving, niche, and emerging or declining research) that can accelerate financial inclusion. Conclusions: This study highlights the synergies between fintech and financial inclusion research. This study contributes to existing knowledge in three ways. First, the descriptive analysis maps existing research on fintech and financial inclusion. Second, the qualitative analysis provides a comprehensive overview of how fintech and financial inclusion topics is interconnected. Third, future research areas for fintech and financial inclusion were identified. In general, fintech democratizes financial inclusion for the unbanked and marginalized communities while reducing operating costs. Governments should promote financial inclusion among those most vulnerable and affected by global threats.

Abstract:Financial technology (fintech) research is a critical, dynamic and rapidly developing field, making it essential to systematically review and prospect the fintech field to advance its development. Using a combination of data-driven techniques from main path analysis and bibliographic coupling analysis, this study maps and analyses the growth laws, main research trajectories, and intellectual communities of the fintech domain in current research. The results show that the fintech field has gone through three phases, namely, ‘emergence’ (1977–2008), ‘fermentation’ (2009–2017), and ‘take off’ (2018–2022). The bibliographic coupling analysis suggests that the whole fintech research domain can be classified into four research streams: online banking and payment technology, lending and capital-raising online platforms, automated and algorithmic trading, and blockchains and cryptocurrencies. After conducting a retrospective analysis of prior studies and scanning over future-oriented challenges and demands, this study speculates and proposes four important topics that require urgent attention, namely efficient applications of blockchain technology in the financial sector, new business patterns of banking and other industries under fintech integration, the impact of fintech on financial inclusion, and the risk control and supervision of fintech.

Abstract:China has been at the forefront of financial technology (fintech) growth,especially in areas of digital financial inclusion,such as providing mobile payment,online lending and digital insurance to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and low-income individuals.Each of the two main mobile payment service providers,WeChat Pay and Alipay,has close to one billion users.During the first 10 months of 2018,China made a record US$12.8tn in mobile payment transactions,surpassing the US$49.3bn transactions made in the US] And each of the three online banks,WeBank,MyBank and XWBank,extends around 10 million SME and individual loans every year.In 2018,fintech investment in China reached US$25.5bn,accounting for 46 percent of all fintech investment globally.2 While fintech is rapidly transforming business models,individual lives and the macroeconomic environment in China,there is still inadequate documentation of such revolutionary changes,let alone careful analytical research.This special issue represents a small step in trying to fill this gap.

Abstract:Fintech has exploded since the Internet revolution. Today, fintech has given rise to numerous segments, and many financial technologies have gained wider application. Among which the most active fintech areas are: online payments via digital currency without the need for cash; P2P lending, which enables direct person-to-person lending without the use of intermediaries; robo-advice, which use algorithms to provide investment advice; and distributed ledger technology (DLT) blockchain. They are all widely used in some countries around the world, but have not yet undergone a complete replacement. These emerging financial technologies have undoubtedly revolutionary implications for traditional finance, providing new ideas for the development of the financial sector. The problems they generate deserve attention as well. This paper introduces the development history of these four financial technologies, compares them with the traditional way of operation in the financial field in which they applied, and analyzes the advantages and limitations of these financial technologies. Finally, reflections on the future of fintech development are presented.

Abstract:This issue of the Community Development Innovation Review examines the promise and pitfalls of financial technology, or fintech, for fostering racial equity and greater financial inclusion. Edited in partnership with the SF Fed’s Fintech Team and Aspen Institute’s Financial Security Program, this issue brings together a broad set of voices from people working in various roles—including in technology, community development, economic inclusion, regulation, and investment—to contextualize gaps in the financial system and consider ways to address them. The authors examine dimensions of the fintech ecosystem that promote and those that hinder equity and inclusion. The issue also highlights partnership and design approaches to deepen impact. Fintech leaders are well-positioned to enable greater access to the financial system and are also faced with the potential for deepening existing inequities. This issue provides a starting place to explore this tension.

Abstract:Coexistence with technology has become part of daily life, the advantages of its use have spread to different disciplines such as finance, this evolution is part of the emergence of companies called Fintech (Financial Technology), a term that unifies Finance with technology, and that promotes the development of services and products that includes technological innovation to provide financial services, in a practical way and with easy access to people, companies or government. Fintech companies follow a customer-focused methodology, developing technological solutions according to the needs of their users and the current trend of the digital market, their most common products are focused on: means of payment and transfer, infrastructure for financial services, credits digital, personal finance, business finance, crowdfunding, disruptive financial entities, cryptocurrencies, Blockchain, and InsurTech. Abstract:The emergence of financial technology around the globe is driven by efforts to deconstruct and reimagine business models embedded within financial services. Entrepreneurial endeavours to this end are diverse. Indeed, the propensity toward complexity is considerable, bridging a range of financial services, markets, innovations, industry participants, infrastructures, and technologies. This study aims to improve comprehension of the global fintech landscape. It is based on the analysis of start-ups that participated in SWIFT's Innotribe competition. We used cluster analysis to group 402 fintech start-up firms, and then selected representative cases to create a foundational understanding of the structure of the fintech landscape. The main findings of this work are: (1) the development of fintech clusters to classify core services, business infrastructures, and underlying component technologies, which characterize fintech; (2) an analysis of how fintechs synthesize different technologies to restructure flows of financial information through competitive and cooperative mechanisms of disinter-mediation, extension of access, financialization, hybridization, and personalization; (3) an analysis of related strategies for value creation connected with the competitive and cooperative mechanisms that were identified. Collectively, our results offer new insights into the diversity and range of emergent innovations and technologies that are transforming the financial services industry worldwide.

Abstract:In this article, we review some recent developments in the field of Financial Technology or “FinTech.” We begin with an overview of what FinTech is and why it has become an important growth industry in the financial services area and therefore an important research topic in finance. In the next section, we review some of the academic literature in the FinTech area. In the subsequent section, we characterize the financing of FinTech startups, especially by venture capital firms. In the following section, we characterize innovation by FinTech firms as well as by incumbent financial intermediaries. In the next section, we move on to discuss potential sources of value creation by FinTech start-up firms relative to existing incumbent firms: we conjecture that one source of value creation may arise from FinTech startups being able to provide a superior customer experience relative to incumbent firms in various areas of consumer finance. In the following section, we discuss the regulatory environment facing FinTech firms, in their banking as well as in their financial market activities. In the penultimate section, we analyze the buy-versus-build decision facing firms choosing to enter the FinTech sector, and discuss the trade-offs that may drive such decisions in practice. We conclude with some remarks about the future directions that may be taken by the FinTech industry.

The paper begins by providing an overview of the fintech revolution and its impact on banking, highlighting key drivers such as digitalization, consumer demand for convenience, regulatory changes, and technological advancements. It examines how fintech solutions have revolutionized banking operations, including digital banking platforms, payment solutions, data analytics, AI-driven insights, blockchain applications and robotic process automation (RPA). Through an analysis of current trends and empirical studies, the paper delves into the future prospects of fintech in banking, emphasizing its role in expanding financial inclusion, enhancing customer experiences, improving regulatory compliance and fostering collaboration between banks and fintech startups. It explores the role of open banking frameworks, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), biometric authentication and regulatory technology (regtech) in shaping the future of banking. Furthermore, the paper examines the challenges and barriers hindering the widespread adoption of fintech in banking, such as regulatory uncertainty, cybersecurity risks, legacy infrastructure constraints, data privacy concerns and talent shortages. It identifies untapped areas and opportunities for fintech innovation, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) lending, wealth management, insurance, trade finance and rural banking. Through a comprehensive analysis of industry trends, regulatory developments and technological innovations, this research paper provides insights into the transformative potential of fintech in the banking sector. Abstract:This systematic mapping study provides a comprehensive review of current Fintech publications, analyzing the current state, maturity level, and future directions of Fintech research. Reviewing 518 Fintech articles across four academic databases from 2008 to 2021, we find a significant increase in Fintech studies, especially in Quartile 1 and Quartile 2 journals. Fintech and banking, Fintech development, and Fintech adoption are the most popular research areas, and articles in these areas are increasing. We propose a classification scheme for Fintech studies across five dimensions. Our study provides a unique perspective on the subject, enabling researchers and practitioners to re-evaluate the direction and scope of future Fintech research.

Abstract:This paper examines the past and the future of the interface of operation management and finance with Fintech in supply chain. First, we investigate the evaluation of operation management and finance in supply chain from 2011 to 2021 using CiteSpace. After analyzing all papers retrieved from Web of Science, we find that the number of information and financial flow-focused papers has increased steadily over the years. Second, we conducted a two-round survey to construct a research framework for the field of supply chain operation and finance with Fintech, and identify five important research topics for researchers. Third, to help both firm managers and investors understand supply chain finance in the Fintech era, we explain the relationship between operation capacities and investment elements.
