Abstract:The field of academic finance has grown and evolved in the 46 years since the Journal of Financial Economics (JFE) began publishing papers. This paper examines detailed data on the 3,003 papers written by 3,358 different authors published in the JFE over the period 1974–2020. Advances in computing power and electronic communication have driven trends toward more empirical work, more coauthorship, and more complex papers. The set of authors, referees, and editors has also evolved as the field spans a much larger geographic footprint and as women have come to play a larger role in all aspects of academic finance. Growth in the demand for finance faculty has driven up faculty compensation and the demand for scarce journal space.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to critically review recent contributions to the methodology of financial economics and discuss how they relate to one another and directions for further research. Design/methodology/approach A critical review of recent literature on new methodologies for financial economics. Findings Recent books have made important contributions to the study of financial economics. They suggest new approaches that include an emphasis on radical uncertainty, adaptive markets, agent-based modeling and narrative economics, as well as extensions of behavioral finance to include concepts such as diagnostic expectations. Many of these contributions can be seen more as complements than substitutes and provide fruitful directions for further research. Efficient markets can be seen as holding under particular circumstances. A major them of most of these contributions is that the study of financial crises and other aspects of financial economics requires the use of multiple theories and approaches. No one approach will be sufficient. Research limitations/implications There are great opportunities for further research in financial economics making use of these new approaches. Practical implications These recent contributions can be quite useful for improved analysis by researchers, private participants in the financial sector and macroeconomic and regulatory officials. Originality/value Provides an introduction to these new approaches and highlights fruitful areas for their extensions and applications.
Thirty Years of Academic Finance

Abstract:We study how the financial literature has evolved in scale, research team composition, and article topicality across 32 finance-focused academic journals from 1992 to 2021. We document that the field has vastly expanded regarding outlets and published articles. Teams have become larger, and the proportion of women participating in research has increased significantly. Using the Structural Topic Model, we identify 45 topics discussed in the literature. We investigate the topic coverage of individual journals and can identify highly specialized and generalist outlets, but our analyses reveal that most journals have covered more topics over time, thus becoming more generalist. Finally, we find that articles with at least one woman author focus more on topics related to social and governance aspects of corporate finance. We also find that teams with at least one top-tier institution scholar tend to focus more on theoretical aspects of finance.

Abstract:In recent years, more and more financial management problems, such as portfolio selection, asset pricing, risk management, and asset-liability management problems, have been presented in the literature adopting formulation and solution approaches rooted in mathematical theory, as well as optimization methods. In this special issue, we tried to include the variety of the topics which are currently investigated with respect to mathematical modelling and algorithms to the financial management problems, including portfolio selection, asset pricing and hedging, futures and options, and financial forecasting. Below, a very brief overview of the featuredworks is given.

Abstract:While the literature on the effects of financial development is large, relatively few studies have examined whether and how financial structure—the mix of financial institutions and the services that they offer—matters for economic growth and inequality. Moreover, the literature has been largely silent about whether the relationships between financial structure and firm outcomes (performance and access to finance) change as a country develops. The group of papers published in this special section helps to fill those gaps in the literature. The four that appear here were part of a larger conference on “Financial Structure and Economic Development” that took place at the World Bank on June 16, 2011. Further information on the issue of financial structure in development can be found in other papers presented at the conference and available in World Bank Working Papers (Lin, Sun, and Jiang, 2009; Beck, Demirgüç-Kunt, and Singer, 2011; Kpodar and Singh, 2011).1 The first of the papers in this issue by Asli Demirgüç-Kunt, Erik Feyen, and Ross Levine, uses quantile regressions to assess the relationship between economic and financial development at each percentile of the distribution of economic development. Thus, the quantile regressions provide information on how the associations between economic development and both bank and securities market development change as countries grow richer.
Topics and trends in finance research: What is published, who publishes it and what gets cited?

Abstract:In this study we provide a detailed examination of the subject matter of finance research and its institutional features as it has evolved over the past two decades. Drawing on novel approaches from data science, we examine the content of more than 30,000 published papers. Overall, we find a striking lack of diversity in the topics investigated and the methodological approaches used. Almost all finance research is conducted using techniques from economics and mathematics, with virtually no use made of qualitative methods or interdisciplinary approaches. Looking at the developments of the discipline over time, we document an increase in the volume of corporate finance research and a variation in the topics covered following the financial crisis, although these changes appear to be reactive and trivial rather than paradigm shifts. We also provide a cartography of research in finance and its citation-based impact by the location of authors. Leading finance research is concentrated in elite US institutions, and has a disproportionately strong citation-based impact. Compared with other business and management sub-fields, citations in finance are heavily skewed towards the top journals as the latter generate almost twice as much impact as the lower rated outlets.

Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting

Abstract:Based upon my experience in research, teaching, writing textbooks, and editing handbooks and journals, this review paper discusses how financial econometrics, mathematics, statistics, and financial technology can be used in research and teaching for students majoring in quantitative finance. A major portion of this paper discusses essential content of Lee and Lee (Handbook of financial econometrics, mathematics, statistics, and machine learning, World Scientific, Singapore, 2020). Then Lee (From east to west: memoirs of a finance professor on academia, practice, and policy, World Scientific, Singapore, 2017), Lee et al. (Financial econometrics, mathematics and statistics, Springer, New York, 2019a; Machine learning for predicting default of credit card holders and success of kickstarters. Working paper, 2019b), and Lee and Lee (Handbook of financial econometrics and statistics, Springer, New York, 2015) are used to enhance the content of this paper. In addition, important and relevant papers, which have been published in different journals are also used to support the issues discussed in this paper. I have found the applications of financial econometrics, mathematics, statistics, and technology have improved drastically over the last five decades. Therefore, both practitioners and academicians need to update their skills in this area to compete in both financial market and academic research.

Abstract:In September and October 2020, the Real Estate Finance & Investment Symposium, sponsored and organized by the University of Cambridge, the University of Florida, the University of Geneva, and the National University of Singapore, was held online, given the COVID-19 pandemic. Ten papers on various research topics were presented in five two-hour sessions spread over five days. Each presentation was followed by remarks from a discussant as well as general discussion from the audience. This editorial discusses the six papers from the symposium that are included in this special issue.

Abstract:Based on a 12-year bibliographic record collected from the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters) database, the present study aims to provide a macroscopic overview of the knowledge domain in financial decision making (FDM). A scientometric and bibliometric analysis was conducted on the literature published in the field from 2010 to 2021, using the CiteSpace software. The analysis focuses on the co-occurring categories, the geographic distributions, the vital references, the distribution of topics, as well as the research fronts and emerging trends of financial related decision making. The steady increase of papers published year by year demonstrated the increasing interest on this topic at the international level. The scientometric analysis of the literature showed that financial decision, investment decision, and financing decision stood out of the crowd of the research on FDM, suggesting their important role in FDM and its research. The results of citation burst analysis predicted the focus of topics, i.e., the impact of individual differences such as financial literacy, gender and age on FDM in the coming years. Different from the traditional approach of literature review, this bibliometric analysis offers a scientometric approach to reveal the status quo and the development trend of FDM by macro and quantitative means. In addition, future research directions for the field are recommended.

Abstract:In this cover paper, we introduce a Special Issue (SI) published after the fourth edition of a series of financial stability conferences organized by Bank of Mexico, CEMLA, Bank of Canada, Zurich University and the Journal of Financial Stability in November 2021. Before providing our perspective on why the research papers included into the SI are of great relevance, we give a brief and personal overview of recent directions in financial stability research in general, esp., related to topics accentuated by the COVID-19 pandemic or post-pandemic economic and financial conditions and their complexity. Papers published in the SI cover four topics of research in the financial stability field, featuring some outstanding and innovative projects presented during the conference. The first topic is on interconnectedness and shock transmission in the financial system, diving deep into asset fire sales, interconnectedness of various segments of the financial system, in addition to banks, on the optimality of systemic risk capital buffers, and on how risks are priced in the interbank market network. The second one touches upon climate change risks looking at investors’ reactions to international climate policy developments, in particular on the Paris Agreement front and how to jointly model physical and transition risk in the banking system, including the important concept of double materiality. The third topic is represented by projects focused on policy analysis for systemic risk mitigation, specifically dealing with macroprudential policy instruments and crisis mitigation policies. Finally, research papers in the last topic on big data and market data focus on the innovative ways to explore the growing body of data sources, such as data collected by regulators, including credit register data, supervisory data and market data on financial transactions, to better understand sources and implications of systemic risk.

Abstract:For this special issue, the article aims at discussing a few econophysics problems studied so far rather successfully. The following "applications" in micro-econo-physics are considered : (i) financial crashes; it is emphasized that one can distinguish between endogenous and exogenous causes; (ii) portofolio control, selection and inherent risk measure; (iii) foreign currency exchanges, also distinguishing endogenous and exogenous money control; (iv) price and asset evolution values. It is shown that some macro-econo-physics problem have been also tackled, like geographic/political constraints, the globalization of the economy and country clustering. Moreover, it is daring to suggest prospect for studies and researches, whence presenting some selection of a few interesting perspectives.

Abstract:Financial data science and econometrics are highly complementary. They share an equivalent research process with the former's intellectual point of departure being statistical inference and the latter's being the data sets themselves. Two challenges arise, however, from digitalisation. First, the ever-increasing computational power allows researchers to experiment with an extremely large number of generated test subjects (i.e. p-hacking). We argue that p-hacking can be mitigated through adjustments for multiple hypothesis testing where appropriate. However, it can only truly be addressed via a strong focus on integrity (e.g. pre-registration, actual out-of-sample periods). Second, the extremely large number of observations available in big data set provides magnitudes of statistical power at which common statistical significance levels are barely relevant. This challenge can be addressed twofold. First, researchers can use more stringent statistical significance levels such as 0.1% and 0.5% instead of 1% and 5%, respectively. Second, and more importantly, researchers can use criteria such as economic significance, economic relevance and statistical relevance to assess the robustness of statistically significant coefficients. Especially statistical relevance seems crucial, as it appears far from impossible for an individual coefficient to be considered statistically significant when its actual statistical relevance (i.e. incremental explanatory power) is extremely small.

Abstract:Abstract This paper gives a selective review on the recent developments of nonparametric meth- ods in both continuous and discrete time finance, particularly in the areas of nonparametric estimation and testing of diffusion processes, nonparametric testing of parametric diffusion models, nonparametric pricing of derivatives, nonparametric estimation and hypothesis test- ing for nonlinear pricing kernel, and nonparametric predictability of asset returns. For each financial context, the paper discusses the suitable statistical concepts, models, and modeling procedures, as well as some of their applications to financial data. Their relative strengths and weakness are discussed. Much theoretical and empirical research is needed in this area, and more importantly, the paper points to several aspects that deserve further investigation.
